Political documentarian and conservative radio talk show host, John Ziegler, tells CNN that the point of the rally is to, "Raise awareness and get some sort of accountability."

The protest is scheduled to take place as Letterman begins taping Tuesday's program. The group is angry over a joke the talk show host told related to the family of Sarah Palin.

Ziegler could not confirm how many of the more than 2,000 people he originally indicated would be attending had canceled. The rally's page on Facebook has approximately 200 confirmed guests. 1,383 have declined the invitation since the Letterman apology.

A significant number of the people who are attending list their residence as out of state.

Even the good times are pretty tough in the small town of Hardin, nestled deep in the "Big Sky" countryside of Montana. And these are not good times.

So the city of 3,400 people has launched an unusual civic effort to bring jobs and prosperity back to its dusty streets: to become the Gitmo of the north.

Barack Obama's plan to close Guantánamo Bay has sent politicians scrambling to promise that none of the prisoners will be rehoused on their patch. But not Hardin.

Instead, the local council has launched an audacious bid to relocate Guantánamo detainees to the town, offering up a state-of-the-art prison facility that is currently sitting empty. Members voted unanimously to back the proposal and have been actively courting the media to promote the plans.

Hardin's economic development director, Greg Smith, has even toured the empty prison with a camera crew from al-Jazeera. He is convinced the move would be good for Hardin and for the world.

"This is an opportunity to both do something right for us and possibly also something that is right for the country," Smith told the Guardian.

Certainly Hardin is a rather different environment than Cuba. The tropical temperatures of the Caribbean would be replaced by the long Montana winters where snow fall is heavy and temperatures dip below freezing for weeks on end. A seemingly endless expanse of prairie will replace simmering blue seas.

Though few places would relish playing host to suspected terrorists including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-confessed mastermind of the 9/11 plot, Hardin's leaders believe their economic need trumps security concerns.

Hardin sits in Montana's poorest county and has an unemployment rate higher than 10%. Its local mall is shut and jobs are scarce. The new prison, built for $27m, was meant to change that. But instead it is empty after a new Montana governor decided not to use it.

If you don't want to give your tax dollars to corporations, why would you want to give them a fucking tax cut? At least with the bailouts our money will more than likely be returned, with interest.

Part of growing the economy is building a strong economic base at home. Far too many of the companies that received huge tax cuts moved plants, factories, and call centers off shore causing gargantuan reductions in the American based labor force.

IMHO bail outs for jobs at home are a much better deal than huge corporate tax cuts in exchange for offshore jobs.

Since the start of the year, like clockwork, weekly unemployment figures continue to roll in at an amazing rate of over 600,000 jobs shed per week. But I loved that last month the Obama White House crowed they "saved" 30,000 jobs in the midst of that. Somehow the White House pulled an Optimus Prime and transformed its own language from "creating" jobs to "saving" jobs instead. And topping it off, now there are meetings overseas to discuss dumping the American dollar in favor of a new universal world currency.

Sorry, but as an Independent I voted for Obama thinking he could be a breath of fresh air, but if things don't DRASTICALLY turn around in the next 6 or so months, people won't care how charming Obama is. At the same time, Iran's Interior Ministry ordered a probe into an attack late Sunday night on Tehran University students in a dormitory reported to have left several students dead and many more injured or arrested. Students say it was carried out by Islamic militia and police. Iran's English-language Press TV said the ministry urged Tehran's governor's office to identify those involved. Iran's influential speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani, condemned the attack.

Students' Web sites reported mass resignations by Tehran University professors outraged over the incident. One medical student said he and his roommate blocked their door with furniture and hid in the closet when they heard the militia's motorcycles approaching. He heard the militia breaking down doors, and then screams of anguish as students were dragged from their beds and beaten violently.

When he came out after the militia had left, friends and classmates lay unconscious in dorm rooms and hallways, many with chest wounds from being stabbed or bloody faces from blows to their heads, he said. The staff of the hospital where the wounded students were taken, Hazrat Rasoul Hospital, was so shocked that they went on strike for two hours, standing silently outside the gate in their white medical uniforms.

1:28 AM ET -- The mourning rally. Thursday is gearing up to be a hugely significant day for the Green Uprising. Reza Aslan appeared on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show tonight, and laid out the importance of what is going to happen:

What's really fascinating about what's happening right now in 2009 is that it looks a lot like what was happening in 1979. And there's a very simple reason for that. The same people are in charge -- I mean, Mousavi, Rafsanjani, Khatami, Medhi Karroubi, the other reformist candidate -- these were all the original revolutionaries who brought down the Shah to begin with, so they know how to do this right.

And so what you're going to see tomorrow is something that was pulled exactly out of the playbook of 1979, which is that you have these massive mourning rallies, where you mourn the deaths of those who were martyred in the cause of freedom. And these things tend to get a little bit out of control, they often result in even more violence by the security forces and even more deaths, which then requires another mourning rally which is even larger, which then requires more violence from the government, and this just becomes an ongoing snowball that can't be stopped.

That's how the Shah was removed from power, was these mourning ceremonies. And so Mousavi very smartly calling for an official -- not a rally -- but an official day of mourning tomorrow. I think we're going to see crowds that we haven't even begun to see yet, and then follow that, on Friday, which is sort of the Muslim sabbath, the day of prayer, which is a traditionally a day of gathering anyway. This is just beginning, Rachel, this is just the beginning.
