Maybe they should give the Obama book away free to people who don't own any comic books. Then, based upon the number of comic books you already own, they could set the price of purchase. If you own less that 100 comics, the book is only $.25. If you own more than 1,000 comics, the book is $5. Own more comics? Pay even more. We'll see how well that goes over...

Too bad the cover is a render-fest instead of giving us a clue about what's inside.

The rest of this line-up looks pretty much same-same: zombie comic - check, T & A comic - check, hayseeds invaded by aliens comic - check, uber-violent movie-wanna-be superhero comic - check, political comic du jour - check.

Steve Rogers is back from the dead?

It isn't news if it's been predicted for two and a half years.

Along with honesty, integrity, wisdom (the guy hasn't done a single SMART thing since he took office), class (he snubs and insults our allies while bowing to Muslim princes, the tool), and courage (took him 17 meetings to decide to let the military take out a bunch of ragtag pirates. Can't be too careful, don't you know). Somehow, it figures that guys who create fictional icons out of lines on paper would worship a real-life one with about as much depth. What's next, an Obama coloring book? With the word "color" taken out of the title so as not to offend any racial sensibilities?

admitted he read comics when he was younger to appease the geek vote, now suddenly he's supposed to be running around DC comic book stores to follow his fictional adventures with Spider-man?

Bush holding Suadi hands and kissing Saudi ass. But what did you expect? America elects its first black President and the nut-jobd were just gonna shut up?

You think abortion doctors and Holocaust museum guards are going to be the only targets?

The slack-jawed all have guns. The terror has just begun. The white trash are secretly gathering right now, drinking their Bud, listening to their country and pissing about Letterman. Breeding like rabbits and home-schooling all their hate-filled spawn.

God Bless US.

**Bush holding Suadi hands and kissing Saudi ass. But what did you expect? America elects its first black President and the nut-jobd were just gonna shut up?** Bush conducted his relations with the Saudis the way a President is supposed to, with dignity and courtesy; a president bowing to a foreign ruler is not dignified, nor is it courteous, it's subservient at best. Damned un-American as well. IMO, Obama did a li'l Freudian slip there. He showed everyone where his spiritual sympathies lie. **You think abortion doctors and Holocaust museum guards are going to be the only targets?** Of who? The killer of the museum guard pretty much hated everybody, including Bill O'Reilly. The jerk who killed Tiller wasn't hired by the right to do the dirty deed, so what's with the lame blame game? **The slack-jawed all have guns. The terror has just begun. The white trash are secretly gathering right now, drinking their Bud, listening to their country and pissing about Letterman. Breeding like rabbits and home-schooling all their hate-filled spawn. God Bless US.** Man, I hope you're typing this from some kind of recreational therapy center. Preferably one with bars on the windows and no sharp objects within reach.

While in my personal opinion, I find it to be equally tarnishing, embarrassing, and just plain wrong, it is NOTHING compared to a United States president BOWING to another world leader. Why? Because no other United States president has ever done such a thing.

I don't give a shit about the spin and damage control, even though it says way more about Obama than it says about those who speak about Bush holding hands. I know what I saw and I know that it had never been done before by any other United States president.

Again, and to be CLEAR, while I PERSONALLY find it to be equally tarnishing, embarrassing, and just plain wrong does NOT mean that it is EQUALLY tarnishing, embarrassing, and just plain wrong.

Enough with all the political comics. They are flash in the pan at best and will be forgoten before Obama is even out of office. They are worthless and retarded. But what is more retarded is the coverage and reviews they continue to get here.
The political comics are not designed for comic geeks
by Snookeroo
Jun 16th, 2009
04:59:19 PM
They are designed to bring in readers outside the geek spectrum.
And, as a strategy, I'm not sure that's such a bad idea. The comic book publishers need to get more of the general public involved in buying comic books -- especially if the industry is to survive.
Not everyone is into people in spandex beating the crap out of each other (that, proudly, is reserved for comic book afficionados and World Wrestling viewers).

If comic book companies want to keeps selling floppies, they're going to have to cast a wider net - whether that's with political biographies, westerns, war stories, grade school kiddie books - you name it. The industry has to evolve, or it's simply going to fade away.

Availability is a big, big factor with limiting the sale of the genre. Mom and Pop stores are gone -- the traditional venue for comics; those were replaced with direct sales to comic book stores. Now, that is becoming iffy because of the rising price of an individual book -- as has been discussed on this very forum. The sale of comics is becoming so specialized that there are an alarming number of the target demographic that have NEVER bought a comic and an amazing number of people who don't even know what they are (because they aren't sold in the mainstream anymore).

There are, however, some good options: internet sales (which is an imperfect solution at present). Additionally, the sale of trades and graphic novels; the cover price on these make them viable for a brick and mortar stores (like Barnes and Noble).

So yeah -- while you (as a comic book hardcore reader) may not give two wits about an Obama comic, there are plenty of people in the general public for whom this might be their first real exposure to the medium. And that's not such a bad thing.
No problem with Obama comics from me

In my opinion, the comics have proven to be the kindest and balanced among all media. Yes, they've all glossed over shortcomings and focused only on the good stuff for the most part (at least the ones I've read did), it works in the medium.

Besides, they sell. There should be a comic monthly of Obama if it continues to sell.

No problem here with the free market working!

Political comics

You can try and justify them with the argument of broad appeal but in the long run they are not going to help the comic industry. It is just a way for different publishers to try and cash in on the here and now. The people coming and buying these books are one purchasers. Whether they comic is about Obama, Clinton, Palin, whoever the people buying them are zealots fir there political affiliations. They are not people who are going to be turned on to comics. Adults aren't really going to read them and neither will the kids they are given to. These comics are nothing more than cheap marketing ploys.

You say they're not for comic nerds and you are right. So explain to me why they continue to get so much coverage here in a comic nerd forum.

I agree there needs to be diversity in comics from kids stuff, comedy, horror, superheroes, scifi, fantasy, ect but the political comics are a complete waste of time, effort, money, review space, you name it.

You may be right -- political comics may just be a way for publishers to cash in on a craze. I don't know -- I'm not in on the strategy meetings, so who knows?
However, my larger point is that these comics break out into the mainstream. They travel outside of the current comic norm -- for every comic that's purchased -- one, two, maybe three or more people are likely to pick up that issue and read it. Which means more exposure.
Put a comic -- any comic -- on a breakroom table. I guarantee you that 4 out of 5 people who take a break will pick up that issue and flip through it. Maybe, just maybe, that will entice someone to investigate that very special medium known as comic books.
Even if it's only one out of a hundred, that's growth in the industry that we don't have now.
Pretty goofy if you ask me...
