Aside from Fringe, which thankfully survived, easily the best two new shows of the year. Yeah, some will call it pretentious and too high-falutin' for it's own good, but damned if it wasn't engaging and intelligent and literary and fun. I will enjoy these seven hours.

...contains more emotional tension and sensational acting than most drama on television today. Casting him as the king was a brilliant move. I wish NBC would have stuck by Kings and given it some room to grow. This one deserved sucess more than most.
I'll be watching. Really enjoyed "Kings" so far.

elprime, you are right about The Unusuals. The first episode was good enough for me to tune into #2. From there it has just gotten better and better. Loved the "Rear Window" episode a couple of weeks ago. Also got a kick out of Perrineau's character, being obsessed with his age, seeing the number 42 everywhere. I have to think his age being 42 is deliberate; a bit of a shout-out to "Lost" fans who might be watching.

The number 42 comes from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

I knew it was coming back for a few episodes, but I didn't realize we'd be getting 7 eps. Sweet! I can't help but wonder how much better this show would have done had they introduced it in the beginning of the fall season. It's easily the best show on NBC, just like TSCC was the best show on Fox, Pushing Daisies was the best show on ABC (well neck to neck with Lost anyway) and Reaper was the best show on the CW. Whoa is TV!

From an interview with Socrates in issue #12 of "The Philosopher's Digest":
"My favorite number? 42. It used to be 20, but when my buddy Dave... you know, Dave the Hemlock Merchant..., anyway, when my buddy Dave invented numbers beyond what we could count on our fingers and toes, well that really opened up the field of candidates for my favorite number. I settled on 42 because I have discovered it is the answer to life, the Universe, well, in fact, the answer to everything. You heard it here first."

about The Unusuals cancellation mentioned by elprime. What a shame about that one, it was getting better and better, the cast was brilliant. They really need to start measuring the number of viewers by other means, cause I'm sure lots of people download the episodes illegally. I'm in Chile ffs, and I really wouldn't mind downloading tv series with ads in them! There is such an untapped potential, cause it's not like they really have a clue as to just how many millions of people download tv shows. Maybe they had a hit show on their hands, but they never knew about it...

And for that I cannot offer enough apologies. It was a terrible drama. Ludicrous! I hung in there because it was like watching a train wreck unfold. However, I liked most of the actors; the female lead brought nothing to the party.

Maybe if they had gone all in with the "unusualness" and blew off any silly attempt at police procedure. Because that part sunk the show in my opinion.

Jamf's description WHY this failed is dead on...
by Big Dumb Ape
Jun 13th, 2009
07:54:21 PM
Jamf above said: "It was the same thing every week. Something bad's gonna happen and only the kid has the balls to do whats right." That's spot on and maybe the final 7 episodes expand things a bit, but in the end KINGS suffered from the same disease that too many shows do -- they start off being too pedestrian and repeating the same themes or ideas over and over and over again, as if to say "Hey, look! THIS is what the characters are like and THIS is what you can count on if you keep watching us!"...but then it just seems TOO repetitive and you lose interest. Frankly, KINGS lost me around episode 3 when I realized the same thing Jamf said above. Interesting try at a TV show, but just seems like a case where they tried to do something a bit more literate or classy, but then over-thought the thing and proceeded to beat it with a dead horse, which ultimately made the show dull.

Man vs Cartoon, greatest show ever

Hey Herc, why didn't you give us a heads up on this show? If you guys missed it there is this new show that started last night on Tru-Tv called Man vs Cartoon. They take engineering students and challenge them to make the Roadrunner traps of Wile E Coyote for real. Last night they made a Rude Goldberg trap that included a slingshot to a water can to a fast growing flower (they actually made it work) to an igniter to a shoe to a seesaw, release a mouse, take the cheese, drop the weight, pull the roap, fire the gun and ignite the cannon to kill the Roadrunner. Every week they are going to explore the other traps, rocket skates, battyman costume, giant rocks falling on the bird. I can't believe someone is actually doing this! This show is so cool. It will probably only be one season considering the number of traps but who cares, it's awesome.

Neccessary precautions. Measures already taken to prevent further contamination should the worst, not yet confirmed - nor expected to be so - BE SO! i cant believe this show is cancelled, great old timey dialogue. shame this ep was about 'david' being a hero yet again. he's pals with the prince now is he? so now the only villain in the show is doc connors.

Kings is probably the most intelligently written show on NBC. Period. Why did they feel the need to announce a cancellation the way they did? It pisses me off to no end....I LOVE this show. I know there are a few over the top moments, but hell, even Lost has those, and thats probly the greatest show ever. I WANT MORE KINGS

That's just frightening. Ok, first real nice weekend (at least in this neck) of the summer, 8 PM on a Saturday, but still. And yet anywhere from 4 to 6 million people a day - A DAY - will watch TWO HOURS of I'm a Fucking Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here? I think I'm gonna throw up.

That'll kill a show pretty good. KINGS, from the perspective of the average US viewer, was that there show about the Middle East, where there was a soldier who started working for the bad guys by helping a king of a Middle Eastern country during wartime. Yeah, that's something the HEE HAW crowd want to watch. .3 rating. Yeah.
It's not an 8:00 pm show!
by Big Jim
Jun 15th, 2009
08:50:45 AM
It's not meant for kids. Should have been on at 9:00 or even 10:00. Instead, NBC aired reruns of L&O at 9:00 (although the Buffalo NBC affiliate had an infomercial then) and SVU at 10:00.

If NBC pulls it it will simply reinforce the notion that it is not worth the viewers' time to watch intelligent, serialized drama on network television. Why bother investing one's time in a show that won't have aired all filmed episodes, let alone get a second season, or even a full first one?

Of course it got crap ratings. It is 8:00 on a Saturday night in June. The sun was still up. Isn't the whole reasons networks traditionally shy away from scripted shows from June through August is for that very reason? No one is home to watch! WTF are they going to replace it with? Weekly recaps of "I'm A Pseudo-Celebrity, Pay Attention To Me"? Egads! At least we can count on ABC to honor their burn-offs - Eli Stone next Saturday at 10:00.

That 0.3 is for the 18-49 demo

And it's not as bad as it seems when looking at the night overall. The top show was a rerun of Cops on Fox, which got only a 1.2; ABC's Haunted Mansion, and CBS' Without a Trace got 0.6 and 0.5, respectively. Nice to see ABC's number went up for Pushing Daisies (0.7).

I liked the idea of this show a lot better than the real thing. If you go back to promos for the series in the spring it is very evident they weren't being truthful about what the show was about. All the promos gave you the impression that this was a story about the King of America. Would that it were. I would have liked it better as a series about an alternative universe where America broke away from Britain and instituted a monarchy instead of a democracy and Ian McShane was a descendant of the Washington family (since George didn't have any biological children).

McShane made this show worthwhile. Everything else varied from adequate to mildly interesting. Let's not overdo our praise for this material- it was innovative in small ways (it wasn't a cop show, woohoo!) but its conceits about "destiny", etc. reminded me of a very different show- JACK AND BOBBY. As Karuma says above, there was an opportunity here to be really inventive, but they stuck to David and Goliath a little too much.
