with him reading, I honestly feel like I know the man. My favourite performance is the song he did on the Wicker Man OST, however. I believe it's a genuine medieval little ditty about a man whose wife slept around so much that he could no longer pleasure her in the sack... Christopher Lee's operatic delivery only makes it more odd.

You've also gotta love The Return of Captain Invincible, which is kind of like Rocky Horror meets Flash Gordon.

Having once worked at the company that produced the LOTR DVDs, I had a unique and rare opportunity to view an extensive interview conducted by Robert Meyer Burnett, to be used in the bonus material for all LOTR DVDs. While only a fraction was used for the final product, there remains hours of footage where Sir Christopher talks about his entire life, his old friends that he misses dearly, acting, the war, et al. It was all together facinating and I hope that one fay it will be released for the public. He is a remarkable individual, and the honor is much deserved. Congratulations once again! in the creeping flesh. Actually not creeping. Abut 10 yrs ago, I was walking from Covent Garden and I couldn't understand why people were stopping and staring.

Now this tends not to happen much in London, if someone famous rolls by then people remark about them and move on. But not this time.

I realised they were staring at this very, VERY, tall gent, dressed immaculatley in a cream cotton suit. It was The Lee. And man at about 77 yrs old, he was ramrod straight, moving at a helluva clip, but not loping or running, just gliding, no extranious movement at all. The two people with him were having real probs keeping up. I just stood there gaping. Never been starstruck before but sure was then.

Is my favourite Lee performance. That said, where do you start with the man? Bond villain, the definitive screen Dracula, Saruman, Rochefort, Lord Summerisle in the greatest horror film ever - THE WICKER MAN - , Sir Henry Baskerville, Dr Catheter in GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (I love that film), Rochefort in the great Richard Lester MUSKETEER films, Mycroft Holmes in Billy Wilder's fantastic THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, Fu Man Chu in the 60s cycle of movies, and so on. He's a screen legend, an icon, and a cultural touchstone - partly because of the way he associates himself with iconic characters and stories, partly because he's magnetic on screen. Though a Brit, I don't agree with the handing out of these honours. However, Lee deserves every accolade. He's the man.

.. the whole Knighthood / honours system is an absolute load of PR bollocks. Seriously, be in the news for longer than a month in the public eye, be flavour of the month, or be over the age of 70 and/or about to cark it..... you're in. I'm fucking surprised Amy Winehouse isn't on a shortlist yet...

So, that's why it's good to see Christopher Lee getting it. Always makes a flick better for his presence, seems to do what he wants, and recognisable to - what? - two or three generations now? Well done, Sir!

(And it IS a shame Cushing never got one. I remember seeing him on an interview just before he passed, and he seemed the most lovely, humble, likeable, grandad-you-never-had.

.. couldn't agree more. In the infinite litany of fuck-ups that plagued the prequels, Dooku was scuppered by (a) under-use and (b) that stupid name.

And yes apologists, I know keeping on Maul, or Dooku, as uber-evil bad guys would have detracted from Vader as the scourge of the galaxy... but fucking hell...

(Sorry all, just been out for copious beers with a friend, and we had a converstation inspired by Terminator Salvation, about how prequels can be such a fucking mess.)

Because he doesnt forgive those who edit his screen time. He had a major falling out with Micheal Deeley over The wicker Man. it had something to do with lord summerisle expounding at great length about an apple crop, amongst other scenes Lee reacted with fury. but the movie had to be cut. Lee takes umbrage at this type of thing.

Lee must be one of THE greatest icons of movie history. He has so many roles, playing characters in Douglas Fairbanks Jnr Presents, and then his roles as Frankenstein's monster and Dracula. It's amazing to see that he's still working in film. He's always been active and in good health. Considering he was already quite old in The Man With The Golden Gun, and how he went on to play Dooku and Saruman is testamnt to the durability of this guy. He's currently filming in Mexico on a new project. I'm just gutted for him that his work on LOTR The Return Of The King was cut out by Jackson. He did him a great dishonour, and normally I'm a Jacskon fan but he fucked up on that one. I am glad that it was included on the extended edition. All hail king Chris!

I also hear the great things said about Cushing here. I'm sure Lee agrees with you guys.

If he hadn't played Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and all those other horror fims in the past, you know he wuld've won at least an honorary oscar. I mean with his career and longevity, any other actor would've been honored years ago. I mean c'mon hollywood, the guys still vital. track down sue townsends the queen and I. very funny. A new labour govt has taken power under the youngest pm ever and the royals have been dumped into a council house. What was extraordinary was that new labour wanted to modernise the royals. knock down buckingham palace and replace it with a modern building. Charles made sure that never happened as we all know Charles has a distaste for modern Architecture. Channel 4 made two of the best documentaries under dispatches strand about the royal family and Charles. really great stuff. One was called the meddling prince and the other was about the royales and how they are open and transparent. They are nothing of the kind. One story is about william and his air corp training. it takes years to pass the test that william did for ordinary pilots in the RAF. William passed it in Seven weeks. We all remember eddie winsdors tv company and how it was supposedly dissolved and wound up. well that is not strictly true it was moved off shore. then there is the royals attitude to property. Andrew bought a house which he planned to develop. The house was bought at the height of the property bubble at much cheaper price. This is called playing the market.Do the windsors wnat the public to know about all this carry on. absolutley not. They are it seems at great pains to point out how open they are. it took channel4 and its reporter Alex Thmpson months to find all this stuff out. re the meddling prince. That film stated quite clearly that when Charles ascends the throne he may well destroy the house of windsor and bring down the royal family. Charles cannot help but meddle in the affairs of state and has been doing it since at least the 1950s. He wrote to harald wilson about Northern Ireland and the wilson govt rebuffed him and told him to mind his own business.

Most British people treat the Royal Family as a bit of a joke, to be honest. They're the butt of an awful lot of derision. We're always quite amused with the jaw-dropping gushingness with which awe-struck American tourists talk about the Queen. If you have to pay for her lavish lifestyle, you tend to be rather more cynical towards her. Does that cyncism translate into revolutionary fervour? No, for most people, as we know they help make us 'special', attracting a lot of tourism bucks into the country, and as they wield no real power whatsoever, we can just ignore some of Charles' more madder pronouncements on plants and architecture, and laugh at Philip's squirming casual racism!
I'd love to see Jarv-Jarv's comments on the royals.

I think it is more your own countryman that resent the Royal Family then us "Colonials" I have an abiding respect for the history and magnificence that was once the Britixh Empire. It is a shame that like a lot of Americans who can not appreciate the rich history of our own country and it's colonial beginnings, a great many of our British cousins seem to be a bit forgetful regarding how we helped pulled your butts out of fire on one or two occasions. And as far as the FRENCH they only helped the American cause because they hated the British so much and they thought they could screw with them by helping the American cause. The freakin Spanish never enter into the equation except when we kicked their ass in the SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. Idiots on this site are not just American they cross the entire World.

No matter what you may think of the calibre of their leaders at least they were elected by the people, for the people, with liberty and justice for all. Btw - I'm from South Yorkshire and if I had my way they'd be lined up against a wall and shot. Fuck all royalty. With them where they are we will never, NEVER, be truly equal.
