this is currently one of 2 shows I HAVE to watch, the other is Reno 911.

it's so great, so compelling, and so CRAZY! Bryan Cranston should win another Emmy, seriously. he blows every other TV actor away with how well he plays understated, how well he portrays all these tense emotions right underneath Walt's surface.

and they used a great TV on the Radio song for a pivotal moment!

Nothing was more pivotal then last weeks ending scene and what music did they play? Blah Blahch MUCK EDJLFDLK. Yeah nothing.

Though they did have a good Rodrigo y Gabriela when Walt went on his first rid along in the first episode. Music sucks so hard these days I can't even muster the thought of caring.

I think the show picked up a second wind when Walter was found to be healing. With most shows, this would be a cop-out- having him get better actually makes it even worse for him. And if anyone cares, tonight is the finale of Deadliest Warrior at 9 - with a marathon of the season starting at 1.
So fucking wonderful...

And Aaron Paul deserves tremendous credit for his job as Jesse this season. He's keeping toe to toe with Cranston. Prediction for this flash-forward all season. That water heater Walt is working on is going to explode. Ted will be over to see Skyler and giving her that pink teddy bear. And they are the two bodies. Season 3 has Walt, even more hardened, raising two kids on his on, NEEDING more money, due to Skyler being dead.
Also, particularly brilliant foreshadowing last episode..

I love that Walt might actually beat his cancer after all the fucked up crap he's done because of it. He's become a hardcore asshole. Seriously, after letting Jane choke to death on her own vomit? I hate you Walt! I knew they were setting up Jane as a tragic death, but Jebus, the way it happened made me get up and scream! Fuck that was harsh! And Bob Odenkirk's Saul has me in hysterics every time. Pure, unexpected, comedy genius! My predictions for the bodies under the covers: Walt Jr. and Skyler. Watch out for Tortugas!
It will of course be related to his working on the house....

Shiban and Gilligan - who were always the brains of Carter's operation. But this show is amazing in its uninhibited darkness. That scene with Jane was amazing, seeing Walt decide to do nothing, knowing she would die, but he knew this was the only way to protect his family. Tears streaming down his cheek. I can't wait to see it tonight, but I hope to god they don't mess with that baby - I don't think I could handle that.

What the fuck!? Don't give me that cliche everyone's connected bullshit. What a sad attempt at foreshadowing & determinism you pathetic writers, why not just put Hank and Marie on that damn frickin' plane, and make it Walt's fault. You can't just write the best show on TV, nay on screen, and just ruin it in the last five minutes with that bullshit garbage. This show I respected because it was real, but that last sequence can't even redeem its own contrived bullshit by any excuse, including by "it was a hallucination because it's a show about drugs". All hope for TV, film and drama has died!

Quote: In that moment, at the end of season two, he doesn't realize it, but he's responsible for the whole world figuratively coming to an end around him. It's not deus ex machina, there's another term we were talking about, Lucifer ex machina, "Devil from the machine" -- it's the opposite. It almost could feel kind of random, but it's not. It's a butterfly effect. All these gears have been turning, this particular outcome was stuff Walt put into motion a long time ago by choosing to cook crystal meth.
The Ending Wasn't Random Folks!!!
by Replicant23
May 31st, 2009
11:05:01 PM
Breaking Bad is a show that operates on a symbolic level, and always has. It's literary in that regard. For example, when Walt learned he was going to live, he punched out his reflection in the restroom towel dispenser because he realized that he was in trouble, that he had created this evil twin, so to speak, and his violent reaction to his own reflection manifested that theme. The next episode, his realization and anxiety that his life was a fucking mess was expressed through the metaphor of his house repairs. There's rot in the foundation! The water heater's leaking...he's obsessed with "getting his house in order". It's no accident that he runs into the inept meth wanna-be at Home Depot (or wherever)...and ABANDONS HIS CART OF HOUSE REPAIR SUPPLIES. At that point, he is tacitly abandoning his old life...he now embraces being Heisenberg, and goes out to send those fools packing out of his territory...and smiles in satisfaction. That, folks, is great writing. The plane crash isn't random because it's the culmination of a string of events he set in motion by letting Jane die. (I laughed when the crash happened, it did seem out of the blue and kind of comical after all the build-up, but after a little thought, I realized that it made sense, an expression of karma in a sense.) And for what it's worth, man I'm gonna miss Jane. She was one hot fucking chick, and I would kill and then have a punk teddy bear crash in my yard just to have one night with her. Jesus. She be uberhot.

You're dead-on about Walt's arc. If I were to give a quick synopsis of the show it would be: 'How a reasonable, decent person can become Tony Soprano.' That's a tall order for a show-premise, but they've pulled it off beautifully so far. I loved the plane collision deal at the end. Walt finally get's to see the results of his vast, nefarious influence. Even though he doesn't know it yet. Cranston & Paul are wonderful in this. Hopefully, BB will clean up this awards season. Skylar doesn't want to hear it. She knows that what Walt did was criminal. That very fact, coupled with what her boss did at work, destroyed her faith in men. She eliminated every marital and family issue, the only thing remaining, had to be criminal actions. She didn't want her baby exposed to that in any way whatsoever. No reason, or explanation will justify staying. Makes sense to me.

Q:So what's the point of the ending, in your mind? Why is judgment falling from the sky onto Walt?

A:In simple terms, we just wanted a giant moment of showmanship to end the season. And what better way than to have a rain of fire coming down around our protagnoist's ears, sort of like the judgment of God? It seemed like a big showmanship moment, and to visualize, in one fell swoop, all the terrible grief that Walt has wrought upon his loved ones, and the community at large.

It's a small world after all! Walt's criminal excursion is clearly causing more damage to others than himself. I wish it had been Walt Jr. and Skyler who died, then Walt could finally experience his own personal tragedy for a change, instead of being the instigator of it. (and no, getting cancer doesn't give you the right to kill or cause misery for others) The icing on the cake for next season: when Walt makes the connection between his action of letting Jane die and the airplane crash. How do you continue your criminal enterprise after that?

Seems there will be no happy ending for Walt according to the creator of the series

And is it also a safe assumption that you're not going to kill off your leading man midway through the series by dropping an airplane on him? ------------------ We're back in the writers' room now, plotting out season three. I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say Walt is front and center, as always. The way I see it, if a jet engine fell on his head and crushed him, he'd be getting off too easy. He's not getting off nearly that easy.

Maybe not a happy ending...but it'll be entertaining.

Like the final season of The Shield which delivered the perfect bittersweet ending, Vic getting what he wanted but regretting everything at the same time. Damn I hope that gets an Emmy nomination.
One character vs. a hundred strangers?

I love the comments from people who are outraged that the victims of the plane crash are strangers. So, what? That's not a huge tragedy, because one of our main characters wasn't on the plane? This is so much worse than one or two deaths -- it's a huge, huge sin on Walt's shoulders now. Walt thinks he's taking care of his family, but the question is: At what cost?
did no one else notice NTSB on the trucks in the cold open?

I thought NTSB being the national transportation safety bureau was a common enough acronym that it was a pretty big tipoff that this wasn't gonna go how you thought.

but maybe I'm just a trivia nerd, and it was just another thing you go back and notice afterwards, like the titles spelling out 737 down over ABQ.

and if you didn't read Replicant23's post above, you really need to. this show has always been great because it works on 2 levels, and both of them amazingly. the reality of the show is amazingly written and acted, and you desperately need to know what's going to happen to everyone, but it is also a very intricately designed parable on how we allow ourselves to descend from the moral high ground for one reason or another. the scene of Walt punching his reflection in a moment where, under ANY other circumstances, a person would be overjoyed, is as fantastic and powerful as anything I've ever seen on television. and I've seen every episode of the West Wing like 5 times.

honestly, in terms of dramatic television, there's Breaking Bad, West Wing, and maybe Sopranos as a DISTANT 3rd, in my book. it's that good.

and Cranston winning a 2nd Emmy would be a fucking GOLD mine for the show. there would be evn more interest, even more critical acclaim, and in the off-season, they'd sell even more DVD's as people scramble to get caught up before season 3.

I'm just so excited to see what's next, I can't believe how long I'll have to wait to get my fix! I hope the 2nd season DVD has a lot of extras!

Great interview!

just a quick note to people who are coming up with alternate ways that Walt could have explained away the influx of money.

you're missing it on 2 points.

first, Walt is NOT a money launderer, or a crime genius. he didn't know what he was getting into at the beginning, and everything he's done has been resultant of his inexperience. once he got to the point of "owning" his own criminal tendencies, Saul was in the mix, and he followed his lead.

second, if we could assume an alternate reality where Walt shows up with over $700,000 in "casino" winnings, would we be so far away from where we are now? Skyler still would have been suspicious (and if she looked into it, she'd find no evidence, same as when she called Walt's mom, talked to his "benefactors", etc.), there would have been even MORE questions in terms of taxes and reported earnings....and more importantly, it would have completely subtracted one of the huge arcs of Walt's character. if he had been able to say that HE won the money gambling, and it was HIS doing, he might have satiated some of the darker cravings of his mind that were unearthed with him cooking and dealing meth. the idea that he's beginning to resent HIS OWN SON for the credit he's receiving for eliciting these phantom earnings on the website, that's a huge part of the destruction of his characters and the deevolution of the Walt we knew. i.e. the meat of Season 3!!!

let the show runners do their thing. they've crafted the best drama on TV since West Wing left, adn they show no signs of stopping. let's enjoy it...

that he wanted to write a story about a regular man becoming Scarface. The circle of death and destruction that surrounds Walt in ever tightening.
This Was an Amazing Season!

I really liked this show in the first season, but this season got so much better. This was just nonstop drama that never let up all season long. I personally loved the ending and how Walt in a way was responsible for that as well. Herc, you make a good point about Skylar though. She had Walt cornered and he was ready to tell everything, but she didn't even want to know. I kind of buy it in the way that she was at the point where it didn't matter. He lied and she didn't want to be with him, but at the same time you are right she probably would have been curious. This was my favorite show overall this past season.
It's not that the explanation didn't matter to Skylar

...It's that whatever Walter's been up to, it's something criminal, and she didn't want to have anything to do with it or become implicated. She's taking the kids and severing the ties.
Will Walt know that it was Q?

How will the "reason" for the plane crash be connected to him? I doubt they'll make the name of the ATC and his image public. We'll see: but I don't think that's ever happened. Regardless, there's a surfeit of juicy stuff to anticipate - the Chicken King know nows who he is; the cartel (if not Tuco's cousins) may start to flex their muscles again; maybe Hank will realize who Heisenberg is and consequently how that incriminates him, rebooting the panic attacks; Jesse gets God and starts giving away chunks of currency; Saul and his network play a bigger role; Flynn turns on his dad after the split and flirts with the dark side; Skylar's bugnuts sister tries to play mediator...and there's Walt. What will Mr. White do next?
