Dolph vs. Seagal
by GhostDad
May 31st, 2009
03:09:44 AM
I prefer Dolph. I think the problem with Seagal, even in the DTVs he does, is that his primary goal is just to be Steven Seagal. Dolph on the other hand always looks like he's trying like hell to make the best movie he can given the circumstances. Watch Masters of the Universe and Punisher, you can tell how determined the guy is to make these huge blockbusters. Seagal is just concerned with how badass he looks, Dolph wouldn't have tried not to die in Executive Decision. So I hope Dolph finally gets a break. He's no leading man, but no reason he can't have supporting roles in action flicks.

An Ivan Drago movie
by AsimovLives
May 31st, 2009
11:47:30 AM
Vern is right, Stallone should direct a movie about the life of Ivan Drago in today's russia. Certainly, and after his dfdefeat in Rocky IV, Drago would had been disgraced and thrown out of the state sports of the ex-USSR. And after the fall of the Soviet Union, Drago wuld be probably unemployed and living in misery. Adn then some russian mafia guy would spot him as he was either being a dum or working cleaning the trash and he would hire him as his personal bodyguard. Then soembody would remember him from teh old days and use him in some illegal underground boxing events for gambling pimping. Then he would raise enough to merit enough recognition even in the boxing underworld. but the mafia was always breathing on his neck, and he was forced to participate in crimes and be a muscle to the mafia or else he would be dead meat the day after. Adn then he could get one change at go truly boxing legit, but his age and his mafia connections would be cause for much drama and trouble.

If anything, the story of Ivan Drago after Rocky IV would be a far more dramatic possibilities then the story of the older Rocky. Think about it.

I like Rambo II's scene.... However, things do get tilted whenever the hero is a Medal of Honor recipient? But in that scene Rambo hits a right combination of quantity and quality with: * 2 - Silver Star * 4 - Bronze Stars for Valor * 4 - Purple Heart * 1 - Distinguished Service Cross * 1 - Medal of Honor
Apparently there is a deleted scene in Rambo III

... I need to verify but it reads: In a deleted scene from Rambo III, Rambo's "Class A" uniform can clearly be seen with the following 13 ribbons: * Medal of Honor - Awarded two and refused another * Army Distinguished Service Medal * Distinguished Flying Cross * Soldier's Medal * Bronze Star * Purple Heart * Air Medal * Combat Action Ribbon * Vietnam Service Medal * Prisoner of War Medal * Army Service Ribbon * Vietnam Wound Medal * Vietnam Campaign Medal

I agree with you about Dacascos (he does sem like a nice guy), but not on Van Damme. All the bad things that happened to him are of his own doing. It's all karma bitting him in the ass. It's deserved. He has to be one of the most irritating movie person i ever knew, both inside and outside the movies. The guy could fall into a hole and never come back and i wouldn't care. Doen't matter he was a proficient martial artist, he's an ass, and he deserves all the bad shit he got. I rather sing the sorrows of Dacascos and Lundgren.

I love the scene when Dolph has to enter the lair of the yuppi gangsters, and his way in is to press on the expensive cars and the gangsters run out seeing what's wrong with their beloved cars,a nd he just calmly walks in. That scene is even mroe remarkable because it's one of the rare scenes in this 80s actioneers where the hero achieves something by using the brains instead of brawl. It was quite unexpected.

Also, the guy who played his side-kick was very good. The man acted the hell out of his role, went way beyond the call of duty. What happened to him?

i almost forgot: another scne i liked a lot in that movie was wehn they go to dolph's pad, and contrary to the blue collar cop hero cliché of the 80s action hero, it's a quite well decorate, very well tended, very clean and the guy even drinks foreign wine to relax. That was both cool and very funny.

Glad to see I am not the only one who loves the shit out of that movie, it's a very underrated film IMO, and shows that Dolph could have and SHOULD have been one of the biggest action stars of the 80's, and it's a shame he wasn't.

Oh and as a side note, I HATE that the name of the movie was changed to dark angel or some crap like that, I Come In Peace was a great title, and how about Dolph's comeback at the end "And you go in pieces asshole" Love it!!!!!

It's not so much that i love that movie, i might not even liek it, but i think it had some very interestingideas, and ocasionally, it was even very well made and had soem unexpected plot twists to the usual cliches of the genre. i mean, one thing i really liked about the movie was that the hero actaully thinks his way into finding out what happened in that mafia meeting massacre, and he comes with a good deduction of what was the way they were killed. most action movies of those times didn't had such stuff, like, a hero who actually uses his braisn as well his brawls. I do give the movie that.

And ye,s the "And you go in pieces" is really great. It's funny like hell. You could evne say the whole movie is just an excuse so that somebody could poke fun at the Voyager's disk salutation. And yes, "I Come In Peace" is indeed from the Voyager's probes. Wow, action movie writers who actually knew their space stuff. Maybe the movie is better then i give it credit for.

You know another movie which i truly think it's underrated and was made around this time? The Hidden. i really like that movie, and maybe i should try to find it in DVD, to chekc it out again. I really liked that one.

i think i'm going to say a blasphemy here to you, and if so, forgive me, but, well, i think that I com In Peace could be remade. I'm not the world's most enthusiastic remake groupie, quite the contrary, but there's soemthign that could be used with I come In Peace premise which could be turned into another movie. Or maybe I come In Peace is such an 80s movie that it would not make any sense remaking it, and part of it's charm is really the fact it was made in the 80s and on the cheap.
Dolph Lundgren the actor
by AsimovLives
May 31st, 2009
03:53:46 PM
Of all the action heros of the mid/late 80s, Dolph might be the only one who might actually have some potential for acting. There's some stuff he pulls in Rocky IV which i though were nice, subtle touches from him. Remember the scene when he firghts Appolo Creed? He is raised on a platform to the ring, and he looks at all that spectacle, all the circus, and his look of bewilderment is priceless. You could tell his mind was "what the hell is going on?". it was a very nice moment for his character, one which barely gets any characterization.

And you guys wikll have to fogive me for saying this, becasue i know if i say anything postive about that movie i'll get my ass kicked by you guys for the remain of thr day, but i do think that Dolph in Johnny Mnemonic was quite good. I think he actually acted well. As in, he really acted. He and Takeshi Kitano, they were good in the movie. And that is all i have to say positive about that movie.

by performingmonkey

This hit me a while ago. Hardly anyone makes MOVIES anymore, mainly because a huge blurring of TV, Internet, cinema and games has happened which has fucked over the real movie. Now the masses expect game-like CGI cutscenes, loads of self-referrential bullshit and cheap lines in place of actual characterization, TV-like situations and action level etc. The only things that sell movies are the 'coolness' level of trailers and the movie's title. Fucking piece of shit Wolverine and people flock to see it. There are exceptions. Even though there's PLENTY of CGI in Star Trek it still feels like a proper film, and a modern one at that. Abrams got it totally right. McG went the other way. The question now is can Cameron pull a real movie out of his effects-driven monster? I want it to be brilliant and massively successful, HOWEVER if Avatar sucks due to the overwhelming nature of the CG I want it to fail so no-one pulls this kind of shit again. I wish the prequels had made no money. The blockbuster scene could look quite different right now if that had been the case.

Best Dolph movies

I'm partial to BLACKJACK. I believe it was made for cable, but directed by John Woo in his weird HARD TARGET era where he wasn't exactly good anymore but still retained some awesomeness combined with crazed Hollywood stupidity. In it he plays a bodyguard who is afraid of the color white protecting a super model from a crazed stalker who for some reason has henchmen on motorcycles with uzis. This is the one that won me over to Dolph because I'd mostly seen him playing grunting Russian oafs before that, but in that one he's very charismatic (and possibly gay).

BRIDGE OF DRAGONS is kind of a fun one, a weird martial arts/fantasy/sci-fi mix directed by Isaac Florentine and with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the villain. (He's also in SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO which is fun too).

ARMY OF ONE is kind of good, it's directed by Indiana Jones's stunt double so it has a bunch of cool car stunts.

As for Helsinki syndrome, it is a rare syndrome with the exact same symptoms as Stockholm syndrome but in my opinion it is a better syndrome. Also, since Dolph was actually born in Stockholm the people he kidnaps can only get syndromes named after other cities.

(Actually I don't know where the fuck I got that from, but apparently I didn't make it up since it redirects to "Stockholm Syndrome" on Wikipedia.)

He was also in a Masters of Horror episode called Deer Woman that was pretty entertaining (and he was good as always). As for Dolph, he's actually my favorite 80s action guy - yeah, I know he didn't have any huge movies or such, but I just liked him more. And his acting has improved dramatically over time. Looking forward to checking out this movie, Command Performance (when it comes out), and of course The Expendables (although I expect he probably has a couple moments max of screen time in that).

It's still one of my favorite 15-second jokes in Die Hard, as the anchor is an'80's Movie, Love-To-Hate "stuffed shirt" type, and it makes him look stupid - again.
