on British TV around the time of Back to the future 3. Actually it tends to be repeated as part of one of those "TV's Worst moments" things.

He just sat there, staring blankly at the guy who was interviewing him. I mean, this was a national talk show.Funnily enough, Crispin Glover (another Back to the Future alumni), comes off as quite ordinary compared to him. At least he did stuff. If you can find the video, check it out! It's worth it for the look on Mary Steenburgen's face alone.

Nothing beats the original but BTTF2 and BTTF3 were about the best possible sequels that could have been made. They don't make movies like these anymore.

The second was the weak link in the trilogy, but was still better than most sci-fi films nowadays. I'd take part 2 over Star Trek anyday. Shit, Doc Brown knows more than Spock about time travel!

A remake is unthinkable. Another sequel even more so.

by The3ATMAN
May 29th, 2009

Make a between-quel - movie takes place between bttf 1, 2 and 3 without discrediting the movies and sets each movie up. I think this is the only way you could re-do another trilogy without disregarding the old one.

IF they were to do a story, I would base it around the first three somehow...i'm not a script writer but i'm sure that they could figure out a way to continue a new series while still maintaining the originals in tact instead of recasting another marty mcfly and doc brown - hell Lloyd would probably come back for another three...

For some reason, the Back to the Future trilogy is playing at BOTH the New Bev and the Aero on Saturday. (As well as Friday at the New Bev.) But Christopher Lloyd and Claudia Wells are tentatively scheduled for the New Bev apperance. (Christopher on Friday, Claudia for both nights.) I'd go tonight, except I have a ticket for the James Cameron event at the Aero.

RE-Release
by finky089
May 29th, 2009
04:09:12 PM
For years I've been wondering why Hollywood didn't just re-release big film instead of remaking them. They could throw tons of fuckin money into the marketing and re-release hype and it'd still be cheaper and less maligned than any remake.

Just as long as they didn't let Lucas "retouch" any special effects or replace any guns with walkie talkies. Oh, they were SPECIAL editions alright...

What they SHOULD do with BTTF
by finky089
May 29th, 2009
04:12:24 PM
if they must create something new is make a videogame like the new one coming out shortly for Ghostbusters. That thing looks fan-fuckin-tastic. A BTTF game could play out kind of like Grand Theft Auto, only you pretty much just drive/fly the Deloreon.

Somewhere on YoutTube there's footage of a GTA mod that allows you to drive/fly the BTTF Deloreon. pretty cool.

it definitely has a different feel from Pt 2 and isn't as altogether solid a film as BTTF 1, but pt 3 is still a great and fun film to watch.

The flying train at the end may be a little hokey to some people. And some people hate that it becomes more about Doc and his love life than about Marty. But the way I see it, pt 3 just takes the story in a different direction and I think it does an okay job with it.

Was a caffeine free drink, not sugar free. There was a DIET Pepsi Free. I understand the joke doesn't work without saying Pepsi Free and if MJF ordered a Diet Pepsi Free I don't think that would have worked either. I don't think diet drinks existed in the 50s.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess I've been mistaken all these years, but then I never thought too much about it, either.

I'll put my extra-geeky BTTF hat back on and explain MJF's "Pepsi Free" line by saying that he wanted the Pepsi free b/c he was already shaken up enough from realizing he went back to 1955 and didn't want the caffeine. BUT, when Lou snaps at him, MJF remembers that not only does Pepsi Free not exist in 1955, the guy probably wouldn't have been familiar with "caffeine" either. SO, he says something without any sugar b/c he just wants something that won't get his heart rate up. Then, ironically, Lou gives him a cup of coffee, which was presumably caffinated. MJF just can't get a break in 1955.

not planned as a trilogy

May 29th, 2009
05:30:29 PM
I remember reading somewhere from Bob Gale and Zemekis that the "To Be Continued" at the end of Pt1 was kind of a joke.

They didn't really have a sequel planned, but thought they COULD take it somewhere if the opportunity came up. it's oen fo the reasons why there was such a long gap between the 1st and 2nd films. It was long enough that MJF had to re-learn how to skateboard for Pt 2.

For a while now I've had a horrible sinking feeling the Zemeckis will go ahead with a new Back to the Future trilogy. Be it a sequel, reboot, reimagining, retooling, regurgitation... And all in mo-cap. Seriously, that thought scares the shit out of me. Because at the end of the day, mo-cap and digital animation is... on screen... a CARTOON.

I miss the old Zemeckis. Who made proper films. I'll bet the only thing stopping this happening is Bob Gale who, all power to him, seems fiercely proud and protective of the Back to the Future trilogy.

The first DVD release has the film without the "To Be Continued" on it. I don't know if they put it back on the new release. I wouldn't think so. Also if you listen to Bob Gale on the commentary he says, "If we knew we were going to make a sequel we never would have put the girl in the car." They didn't know what to do with her for the sequels. That's why she's knocked out a lot.

Don't even say that out loud. I just hope I was right in what I said above. Bob Gale seems protective and proud of the Trilogy, and (I hope) retains the rights to it. I'm sure if anyone had to go through him to remake it, they'd get nowhere, fast.

Then again, I guess we'd all have said that about the likes of John Carpenter or Craven back in the day. Well, here's hoping, eh.

Then it will be 2015, and they can make a movie with old Marty (a cameo, sadly) sending his teen daughter Marlene (too early to cast) to intercept Doc upon his first arrival into the future from the end of part 1. Mostly to find out what the hell changed the future he saw into this lackluster version! The movie then becomes about her traveling all over the place (Napoleon? Nah, Time Bandits did it) and meeting famous people in the past, a la Forrest Gump. Thoughts?

You could be scarily close to the truth there. Anyone remember a few years back when there were sketchy rumours about bringing back Lloyd as the Doc, pairing him with Sarah Michelle Gellar as a new sidekick, and going on adventures into history and pre-history? Dinosaurs, Romans, World War I and stuff?

What made BTTF work was basing it in one town around one family. Shit, Hill Valley practically WAS the third principal character in those films.

Great movies, great trilogy. Probably soon to be shat all over.

Star Trek was never about Shinzon's coup or politicking or technobabble or having an army of Continuity Police poring over every line of dialogue and costume and haircut.

It was about a cool-as-fuck starship captain, his pointy-eared mate, and an irascible doctor, bounding round the stars, getting into scrapes. They'd defeat the bad guys, Kirk would get it on with some alien chick, after outwitting his enemies with cunning, bravado, skill, and sheer bullshitting - and off we went again.

Maybe, just maybe, if they slip some of the original Trek's social commentary, whatever you want to call it, into the next film, and give people something more to think about afterwards than "shit, that Chris Pine will be big after this..." ... we'll all be happy.

I thought the same thing about the "Never? No what's the matter?" line too. My theory is that Doc was worried that since George knocked out Biff that Biff might go after Goerge later (ala BTTF2) and thus once again upset the space time continuum. Since there's nothing he can really do about it at that point Doc just shrugs it off.

They'd make it a dirty, CGI driven, campy sex farce. The sweet innocence of the plot would be completely lost on the suits. Zemeckis even said that Disney thought the movie was too dirty and everyone else thought it wasn't dirty enough. It's kind of a miracle it even got made. There seems to be lots of confusion on this point. TommyGavinsEgo, "To Be Continued" was never on the end of the movie in theaters - it was added to the VHS version. So if you're a purist, you should be happy that the DVD went back to how it was in theaters, without it. Yes, of course, the first one is a true masterpiece! A perfet film with a perfect script, but the sheer joy of having some of the moments of the first film re-visited in Part II, from a different point of view, of having the new characters re-interacting with the old ones, was a stroke of genious... Part III is the lamest, but that has mainly to do with the pacing and the Old West backround... Having said that, it's a nice conclusion to the trilogy!!!

That would have been ALMOST as cool as seeing Leonard Nimoy at the Alamo Drafthouse to present the new Star Trek. No offense to Mr. Lloyd, but arriving in a DeLorean would have been fantastic. One that actually "landed" via suspension cables or whatever would have made history. So, thank you Beaks for disappointing me yet again.

The best and only way to 'reboot' BTTF is to go the Ghostbusters route and make a video game. CGI in Fox and Lloyd, get their voices (Fox can handle some recording sessions, no?), and call it good.
part 2 couldn't have happened!

I used to watch the first one on vhs about twice a week as a kid and it's still one of my favorite movies, but never liked part 2 because it throws away the first one's logic. When Doc send Einstein a minute into the future he's gone for that minute, so why would Doc bring Marty to the future to fix his life when he knows that Marty wouldn't exist in the future if he left in 1985?

Simple, really: Einstein never travelled BACK in time. He stayed in the future. Marty came back to 1985.

See? Now you too can enjoy part 2!

I finally reconciled the logic of Part II's trip to the future... the longer he stays out of his own time, the odds go down that he'll maintain the course of his life, a la the disappearing photograph from Pt. 1. There's a delay, so as long as he makes it back within enough time, it doesn't affect his future.

I guess I can accept that, still was never too fond of part 2 for some reason, though I did dream and pray for a hover board for years after I saw it

"No, Biff . . . you leave her alone." Crispin's Glovers delivery of that line always gets me. The raw courage little George McFly shows, followed by the Best Punch Of The Eighties. Movie magic.

It doesn't really make sense that there would be an Old Marty in 2015, since young Marty has left the past. Yes, he's going to go back eventually, but he hasn't done so YET. And in fact, when he does go back, he changes things so that some of the future he saw will never happen (e.g. he doesn't get in the accident with the other car)--so where did that version of him come from in the first place?

Sure, you could say that it's a "possible future", or a version of the future that would happen if nothing else changed, but that doesn't really make sense, given the rules of time travel that BTTF has established (it might make sense in a "Lost" time travel system, where the timeline seems to be essentially set and unchangeable, and where if you try to prevent something from happening, you will probably end up causing it in the first place).

On the DVD set...

Robert Zemeckis talks pretty frankly about the difference between the first movie and the other two. He more or less says that the first is an original production that he put his heart into, but that a sequel is something else; it's a product, designed purely to make money, and it has to meet certain preconceived expectations while all the time acknowledging that it will never recreate the magic of the first one.

It's kind of refreshing to hear a director actually admit that, because BTTF 2 and 3 do feel a lot like parodies of the sincerity and heart that the first one had, even if they are a lot of fun (Part 2 especially exploring some of the complex issues dealing with time travel and changing the timeline).

It's also interesting to see the original idea for Part 2 (Marty ends up going back to the 60s and seeing what his parents were doing then and almost preventing himself from being born--there's a script out there online somewhere). But they ended up having to do a massive rewrite when they couldn't get Crispin Glover to come back, leading to them having to re-use scenes from Part 1, which led to the version of Part 2 we have.

The new Back to the Future w/ Zac Efron will not be...

...a remake. It will be a sequel, due to the time travel angle. It would be sooooo easy to make, and you would get the cameos from Christopher Allen Lloyd and Michael J. Fox.

Now, the film needs to get made soon if you want those cameos. Lloyd is 70 and he looks older. Fox has Parkinson's disease, and there is no cure for it. Efron's agent needs to make the deal and don't bitch about the money.

Also, Crispin Glover has to be in it to.

Late in the summer of 1985, about to start fourth grade. My ten-years-older sister takes me and my other sister to the drive-in for a double-bill. First we see Mask, which is depressing and slow, but for a movie I only saw once when I was nine, it sure made a lasting impression. Then Back to the Future came on and I was riveted to the screen as I have been only a few other times, mainly when I was young... E.T., Batman, Terminator 2... man those movies could capture and hold your attention (Batman being the weakest in hindsight).
We'll see a remake of the original come 2015...

Do a new series of films starring a grown-up Jules and Verne Brown as they adventure through time and space in their awesome flying train! Get some dreamy young hulks from TWILIGHT or whatever to play J&V, get Christopher Lloyd and Mary Steenburgen back as Doc Brown and Momma Brown, and you've got yourself a blockbuster of historic proportions! DO IT.

in the event you ever come back to look at this thread....

thanks for the insights. Both of those make sense. Dingbatty, I think you ultimately may be right. If I ever see Bob Gale, it's the first thing I'll ask him! (kidding)

Actually, it makes pretty simple sense when you put it that way, Dingbatty. And the simplest solution is often the best one.
