From the shitty new Batmobile, Damien as Robin,Grant "I used to be good, but now I fuck up everything I touch with my metaphysical nonsense" Morrison and Quitely"s SERIOUSLY out of place pencils for a Batman comic, this whole debacle looks like a giant turd coming directly out of Didio"s poop oven. It'll sell like hotcakes, be praised as "revolutionary" and "brave", but at the end of the day, shit is SHIT.

Really? I mean, don't get me wrong-- these guys did AMAZING stuff for Superman. Gorgeous. Weird. Strangely cold AND emotionally involving. And deeply, deeply intellectual.

And I also freely admit that I was completely wrong about ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. When I first saw it, I didn't get it nor like it. It took me about 4 issues to really get into it. And then, by the end of the run, I was deeply saddened to see it end.

But this stuff looks really silly when viewed through the "Batman lens."

To be completely honest, when I read your headline quote at the top re: Shit-macher, I thought you were linking the look, feel and tone of this new Batman comic to those trainwrecks of movies.

The colors? The Toad? The flying Batmobile?

Look, I'm not saying that Batman has to be always a brooding, angry and realistically rendered.

And yes, I totally get that a Dick Grayson Batman would be considerably different than a Bruce Wayne Batman. I mean, the guy spent most of his life in a yellow cape with green speedos.

But wouldn't he also try to keep the appearance, tone and aura of the Batman alive?

I mean, beyond just wearing his costume? Wouldn't he try to "keep Bruce alive" in his day-to-day activities? Wouldn't wearing his old "dead" mentor's costume brood him up a bit? I mean, he lost his (second) father. And now he's wearing his clothes. That's kind of...dark. Shouldn't this darken up Dick as much as Dick would lighten up Batman?

These are, of course, absurd questions because we're talking about a comic book here where a guy dresses up like a bat to fight crime.

My biggest complaint is basically that DC seems to be shoving a square peg into a round hole here. Yes, an admittedly talented square peg. But these guys just don't seem to fit this universe organically in the same way that they fit the colorful, strange and fantastic fantasy world of Kal-El and Metropolis.

In fact, this new stuff looks and feels as out of place as Schumacher's vision did. It's just...kinda...lame.

If this existed in the ALL-STAR line (ie., was not part of canon but a free-wheeling exploration outside of continuity), I wouldn't have a friggin' problem. In fact, I would welcome the idea of writers playing around in that universe because it can offer cool and different takes on well established and often stale characters.

But DC has done more than that. They've officially taken away Bruce from us. Which seems really...odd.

In the end, it's astounding to me (and indicative of Dido's brain crushing stupidity) that DC would "kill" Bruce Wayne and send the Batman universe into this Technicolor dimension immediately following the release of a movie that went on to be the second highest grossing hit of all time and generated more new interest in the character than (arguably) ever before.

I mean, Dido must have a photo of the WB executives blowing a goat. It's the only thing that explains why he hasn't been thrown out on his ass.

What in heaven's name would interest a new fan inspired by DARK KNIGHT to check out any of these new Batman comic books?

I mean, seriously...this is stupidity on the highest order. DC is throwing away new readers by the truck load. In a time with continually shrinking revenue for the comic industry, that just seems astoundingly stupid.

But what else would expect from Dido et all?

Not impressed

Their All-Star Supes was the shit. Never much cared for Quitely's style, just a personal note but this looks fairly generic so far, granted it's 3 pages. The Robinmobile looks retarded as does Robin's black hood over yellow cape. I will however definitely buy this book, I generally like Morrison's stuff and love Grayson as Batman, it's a bummer they couldn't have given a better preview. Really, this only works if you didn't know that this creative is now working on Batman and Robin.

Until Bruce comes back. I never liked Damien. He doesn't make sense and it was overkill. I wish he died when Ras came back. There was already too many Robins and former Robins around. And as a character goes, snotty brats who think they deserve shit without earning it is precisely what made Jason unpopular and Tim great. I mean, I can see that Talia might be a bit spoiled but I can't see her being the fanantical criminal who would raise someone like Damien. She's been out of character for a long time. You would think after the disaster that was Final Crisis, DC would have booted him out. RIP was not an easy read, but the Battle for the Cowl written by different people salvaged most of it. I like Grayson as Batman, but Damien is a Jason Todd in training and don't be surprised if DC does an American Idol wit a splash of online poll to kill him off too. The only good thing about Bruce being dead is maybe he will be a Black Lantern, but he may still be stuck in time. Way to write Clark as an idiot Grant, not surprised since only pseudo fans like this book, because its trendy to like Morrison, always has been always will be.

It fits in with Morrison's love of classic Batman mythos... Dick Grayson grows up to become Batman and Bruce Wayne's son becomes Robin. I read a great article over on io9.com that says Morrison wants this book to feel like the 1960s show filtered through David Lynch and Chris Cunningham. Best comic of 2009. (I hope) Can't wait.

Does anyone really want to see a 60s style Batman through any kind of filter? I for one don't, if I did I could always watch Adam West and Burt Ward or Batman Brave and the Bold.

I don't have aproblem with writers taking from the ideas presented i the Silver Age but as a whole the Silver Age was a retardedly goofy period in comics due to The Seduction of the Innocent and the Comics Code.

Grnat Morrison has beend allowed to run rampant on Batman and in DC all for the sake of his own vanity project. The introduction of Damien and the killingof Bruce were just devices so he could write this "psychedelic" Silver Age throw back story. And before all the Morrison defenders go crazy and start citing All Star Superman as the greatest thing ever, All Star Superman works because it is independant. Continuit free things are the only things he should be allowed to touch.

I agree with who said this is crazy from a business point of view. The Dark Knight was the most sucessfull movies in years not to mmention being the second highest grossing movie of all time. Chrisopher Nolan was able to wast the bad tast of Schumacher out of the public consciousness. Batman is the most sucessfull comic character out there and when new readers, kids and adults a like, go to check out the comic they the ultra confusing Morrison Batman and now this. Dumb, real dumb.

I have no problem with Bruce being dead and I'm excited the Grayson is finally Batman but the addition of Damien, the "death" of Bruce and the execution of Batman by DC and Morrison is beyond disappointing.

To make it worse what should be a milestone in Bat mythos is just going to be a footnote as this run will just be aplace holder until Johns' eventual Batman Rebirth.

...There is plenty of room for different interpretations of Batman! Batman Mythos is like the Bible- you can point to one thing that completely contradicts another- I for one dig the silver age madness and cant wait to see more- the idea of Toad from Wind in the Willows as a Wheelman is brillant! Would you ridicule that character at the same time you find Mad Hatter compelling? Relax, Lighten up! PS: I don't think thats the Batmobile- rather some Robin-related vehicle.

Best ever way to capitalize on The Dark Knight. Kill Batman and replace him with someone else and have robin be some kid nobody has ever heard of. I actually like Dick Grayson though, so maybe he can do something epic and not just live on as "the guy who is not as as good as Batman." But seriously, how long til the real Bats comes back from his dirt nap? A month, maybe two?

Just scanned through and noticed some people had some questions. Batman was "killed" by Darkseid Omega beams, actually he's bouncing around time but seeing as there's no physical Bruce in current continuity he's as dead as Captain America which is to say as Dead as any A-list comic book hero. Wayne and Rogers will both definitely be back sometime. His son Damien is Talia Al Ghul's from an old story, he hasn't been seen since being born and has been trained by Ra's league of assassins since birth, though recently has fallen in with the Bat crew. I think he gets a pass on the murders since he was brainwashed at a young age and the whole crew is out to redeem this child who is Bruce's biological son.

This looks like a lot of fun. Now I loved the Dark Knight as much as anyone, but this obsession with a supposed realistic Batman is really tiresome and asinine.

Also, everyone saying they should have made the Batman books line up with the new movies: You actually want MORE editorial interference in comics? You really think that's a good way to write good stories?

I personally jumped right from the Dark Knight to Morrison's run and loved every minute, and I hadn't read a superhero comic in 10 years.

Batman doesn't have to be "realist" like the Chris Nolan movies if you really want to call those movie realist. Butt hat doesn't mean Batman needs to be trippy, goofy or incoherent. If you've been able to jump in and enjoy Morrison's run more power to you but it has really divided the fan base and isn't something paletable for the vast majority of people who might be new to comics. Like I said, if it were to exist outside of mainstream continuity like All Star Superman it might be great but comics evolved past the antics of the Silver Age for a reason.

Is that your pet name for Morrison, Mr, FTW?

Anyway, I'm torn on this. Loved All-Star Superman, loved the Pop-Art-Bat-Ninja issue of Batman, but did not enjoy RIP, and couldn't even be bothered to buy Final Crisis.

This looks more like Pop-Art-Bat-Ninjas, which is fine with me. Morrison seems to be at his best when he's having fun (and isn't being too stuck up to let readers in on the fun as well).

I've still got pages and pages of great old Batman issues if I want dark n' brooding, so for now, if GM's on Batman, I'd prefer it to be the fun-loving GM, who I seem to enjoy more.

It's really depressing to me how fanboys never seem able to make any sense of people being ANYTHING IN COMICS OTHER THAN "DARK." "Wow - he's not DARKE ENOUGH!" It reminds me of PC ACCELERATOR'S hilarious ad for a fake videogame made especially for fanboys called DARKSTONE II: SHADOW VENGEANCE MASTER - THE DARK SHADOWSTONE'S DARK STONE SHADOW: Episode 1 - The Darkening.

How do you know, Karterhol, that Dick didn't lose his father and say . o O (Hey, you know what? I'm going to HONOR THE HELL OUT OF BRUCE'S MEMORY - BY FINDING THE LIGHT IN MYSELF THAT I LOST - AND BEING A BEACON TO EVERYONE AROUND ME. I'll DO THE RIGHT THING AND INSPIRE HOPE - just like Bruce inspired hope in me. I will be optimistic, bold, adventurous - I'll make them fear the night, but I'll do it with a fire in my eyes and a passion in my spirit."

But you're right, Karterhol. Nobody's EVER CAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING BUT BEING DARK AND BROODY IF THEY'RE KEWL. You got it, man. You get it. You're right. Power is in The Broodening. GET DARK! GET BROODY! GET SERIOUS! IT'S THE ONLY WAY!

My fear is that this is being done so that the "fans" will end up not liking or caring too much for Grayson and Diddio will get his wish to finally kill him off in order to bring Bruce back. Once the ball starts really rolling on the next Batman film Warners will want Bruce back under the cowl for the regular books, just as they dictated to DC that the Joker should get a "carved smile" just as he had in Dark Knight.

Indeed - can't have comics being FUN, now, can you? Gotta be DARK, and BROODY. I love how fanboys say that BATMAN was DARK in the begininng - yeah, for all of a few issues. After six or seven stories which featured such DARK and REALISTIC dialogue as things of the sort like "Blast! I AM FALLING! NOOOOOO!" the comic went lighter and lighter, and more and more in-tune with high adventure. Yes, the "Camp Years" weren't the greatest - but BATMAN has been a KNIGHT, a CHAMPION of GOODNESS AND DECENCY for a lot longer than he has been a tooth-gritting "guy who'S more crazy than the people he fights!" BS.

If you actually read my messages, you'll see I'm saying that the "camp" era isn't to be confused with the "dark" eras. Camp is camp, and always has been and always will be. But there is a WORLD of difference between portraying Batman in one way, the Dark Way, which is "I'm just as insane as the people I fight! OH GOD, THE PAIN OF BEING BATMAN! I'M MISERABLE! I'M DEPRESSED! SEE HOW MANY TEETH ARE DRAWN INTO MY MOUTH? RRRRR! RRRRR! DARRRRK! RRRRRR! ROBIN - MY LITTLE MONKEY WRENCH! My monkey! That RETARD! Rrrrr. Rrrrrr. Where's the hand-chopping enemies I need to fight? FIGHTING IS ALL I AM! BRUCE WAYNE IS MY FALSE IDENTITY - BATMAN IS ALL! I'M NUTS! CRAZY! INSANE! NYYAAARGH! I BELONG IN ARKHAM!" That is the "Dark Way" I am discussing - the tooth-grinding angry Batman who feels nothing but the emotions of aggression and suffering, the "Dark" storylines in which characters endlessly die (only to be reborn eventually when a new writer takes over), every villain plays Devil's Advocate by telling Batman he's nuts and nothing good ever happens to the guy and he's incapable of cracking a smile or feeling humor or giving a friend a word of confidence beyond "Hhhh." THAT is the Dark Era. If you look back at the 50s so-called DARK stories, you'll see Batman is portrayed like the concept of the industrial men of action that populated much of 50s fiction - a strong, quick-witted, sane and capable billionaire who adventured to fight crime because IT WAS THE MORALLY RIGHT THING TO DO - NOT BECAUSE HE WAS INSANE. In the 80s-90s and some of the 2000s, Batman became a twisted hand-chopping starve-his-enemies jerk who criticized everyone and fired machine guns at bad guys. Now, thankfully, the tide is going the other way - toward all kinds of swashbuckling adventure and fun. You know why I love the old Pini BATMAN tv series? Because, for all its VISUAL darkness, the show was ultimately uplifting and about the triumph of the human spirit over people who try to bring humanity down to their savage level. NOT -DARK-. And, aside from that, every single episode featured at leasrt one moment of pure heroism - you know the moment when the three notes of the opening of Batman's theme on that show would be heralded out by trumpets? "Da - daaaa - DAAAH-DAAAAAH!" A good friend of mine online pointed out that the best way to tell if a writer is incapable of doing anything but "dark" writing that they will refrain from EVER showing the hero character doing something that warrants that trumpet-blare ... that heroic beat, that moment when Superman lifts the train or Batman survives a massive fall by firing his Bat-Grapple. It's -totally- true, too. And Morrison, for all his faults and despite FINAL CRISIS being a massive crapfest of unintelligible nonsense, ALWAYS puts at least one moment into every issue where I can hear those trumpets go off, and for that I'm thankful, and glad the "dark years" are dead and buried and hope they will remain so.

...how else do you get people on the internet to pay attention? rational debate? please.

the point is, people who want to put batman in a box marked "grim and gritty" and keep him there are keeping the character from growing. why the fuck do you want to keep reading about a 8 year old kid with survivors guilt that deals with it by dressing as a bat and beating up criminals?

the best batman we have had in the last 20 years has been morrisons "bat-god" from his JLA run. and guess what..... that batman was basically adam west with an attitude. who else could take out a room full of white martians with a gallon of gas and some matches? might as well of had "white martian repellent" on the utility belt.

Am I the only one..?

I will always consider Arkham Asylum as one of the best Batman stories, but frankly Morrison has failed to impress me with his current run. Also don't kid yourself, Bruce Wayne will be back. This is just another marketing ploy by DC and we went through this with Knight Fall. "When I started out I had that in mind, and I thought we'd finally prove that nobody else could be Batman. But I do believe certain aspects of RIP were about how nobody but this guy could be Batman. I think with this, it's fun to start by seeing what happens when someone else tries. Sometimes it goes wrong, and sometimes it goes really well. Some of the things these guys do are things that Bruce Wayne would never have thought to do" So Morrison has you in his pocket. I will take "grim and gritty" anyday. Morrison is playing you. Right now, as weird as Morrison's got, I take Paul Dini anyday.

No cutie, I don't believe the story, also don't believe in shelling out money for a marketing ploy...oh..you do...how cute =) Anyways...I am out. Until Wayne is back and Batman is back on track, I am not buying DC. As far as the "dark/brooding" "psychotic bat" only one writer really capitalized on that and it was Miller who turned out that piece of crap called All Star Batman and Robin. Having read Batman for quite sometime other authors have actually woven some good mystery tales. Matt Wagner also did some excellent work with retelling the early stories. In fact I miss Wagner, I wish he would come back. I have enjoyed Dini off an on, I miss Bat's the Detective, but I have no use or desire to be part of a ridiculous ploy that will only serve to generate money for the title. "If you look back at the 50s so-called DARK stories, you'll see Batman is portrayed like the concept of the industrial men of action that populated much of 50s fiction - a strong, quick-witted, sane and capable billionaire who adventured to fight crime because IT WAS THE MORALLY RIGHT THING TO DO - NOT BECAUSE HE WAS INSANE." Right, and he wore Rainbow costumes and went to other planets and had all sorts of "exotic" adventures. Did you even read the Batman of the 50's? I am thinking not. I did, I grew up on them, I am that old. I remember cringing how stupid some of the stories were and also was aware Batman was close to extinction as a title until Carmen Infanto stepped in then later, God love him, O'Neal with Adams as the artist. Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers cranked out some of the best Detective stories. But it was Carmen Infanto that tried to break away from the awful TV show because it was ruining sales, then with O'Neal coining the phrase the "Dark Knight", which has always been attributed to Miller, Batman got back on track.
Oh and about the Dark aspect...

The Dark aspect was that Kane actually based Batman in a large way off the Shadow. Originally he even carrying a gun that was dropped due to the resemblance to the pulp hero. The Dark aspect was to strike fear in the heart of criminals...that is the DARK. Dark, mysterious,etc...if that tactic is dropped, it isn't Batman, it is another generic bright colored costume hero that is a dime a dozen. So if you don't want dark, buy Superman or something. All the bright colors are out there for you. As much as I love early Miller and the Dark Knight, it is only an aspect of Batman...but Batman and his villians are dark as is Gotham. IF you don't like it...there is always Metropolis...=)
On the psychotic note...

ThusSpakeSpymunk, I think you are confusing Miller's interpretation as a norm. It isn't. Sure I love my Batman dark, mysterious and a tad obsessed. Miller's All Star was horrible and frankly the only claim to fame Miller has with Batman is Year One and the first Dark Knight. But I have never considered, outside of All Star, that Batman was insane. A tad driven, obsessed and slight paranoid, read Tower of Babel, but he was always the essential hero..like Stephen King once wrote that he loved Batman because he was scarier than the monsters in his closet and he was on my side.
I've read the 50s stories ...

I'm not a fan of the alien bull either, Vintage. We're clearly arguing two sides of the same point, especially when you clearly don't like the "insane grrrr" Batman. O'Neal, etc. all wrote great Batman stories without the chracter seeming like a shell. He was a MAN - a tough, driven and ultimately SANE man. But in the 90s, every writer brought out Batman as if he were as crazy (or moreso) than the villains he fought, and every villain called him out on it. It was ridiculous, and to me more incredibly stupid than aliens or rainbow costumes. See, Batman - at his core - can wear rainbow costumes and still remain awesome. I don't favor rainbow costumes (for the record, I disliked RIP's story element 'x' for every element 'y' I liked - it ended up being 50 percent great and 50 percent crap), but I do like a Batman who can smile, who can make a joke, who can fight for moral reasons and not just because he's nuts. That's the Batman I'm hearing will be back with Morrison doing the NIGHTWING thing - I read a thing where they talked about in NEWSARAMA.COM about how Dick is a swashbuckling hero and bold and colorful and daring - and Damien is the dark, dour, somber, obsessed one who is being taught to loosen up - so it is like the Batman/Robin dynamic, only opposite. I recommend giving it a try, as I will!

"Looks that way, doesn't it."

"They kill you off in your book?"

"Real original, eh? Clark told me about this place. I understand they have a killer buffet."

"Yep, all you can eat and you won't get fat or cavaties. Personally, I keep waiting for Pete to show up. So, were you replaced by your fomer sidekick, too?"

"I think so. I don't really read that crap much any more. It's not so bad. A few years ago, they would have unearthed daughters neither of us ever knew we had and Batman and Captain America would be women."

"It's good to see Claremont's influence over the comic industry on the wane>"

"You training for the issue where you have to fight your succesor to take back the identity."

"Nope, that's another perk about being dead. We'll be ready without having to train."
