Obviously a loaded question in these parts. Honestly, I'm sure they WANT Whedon, but are looking for a way to lowball him since Dollhouse isn't the huge hit he was hoping for. If they can't get him... eeehhh... a recognizable property is fairly golden these days and I'm sure they'll try to move forward anyway.

I dislike Buffy not because the actual quality of the show was crap, as it wasn't. It was actually decently made, for the most part.

No, I hate it simply because I don't want to watch a "teenage vampire hunter", and the characters all seemed incredibly "teenage-girlish". It was like Twilight. I don't get why so many non-teen-girls liked and still like the show...

I hate Hollywood -No Joss, no Buffy.

You can't do Buffy right without Joss on board. Even if he's only a supervisor or Assistant Director like Miller on Sin City I'd be at ease. But without Joss involved at all? How does that work considering property rights and all that jazz? Can't Joss just say "No" at that be the end of it? I friggin' hate Hollywood and their income-focused crap. Nothing is sacred -all is ripe for sodomy.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I mean, if a Buffy movie were to be made it would undoubtedly have to be a reboot (there's seven years of garbled continuity to deal with there, and attempting to incorporate it would alienate anyone who didn't watch the series), and as much of a fan I am of Whedon's work I'm not deluded enough to think he's the only person on the planet who could write and/or direct a good Buffy script, but... seriously? Joss has even said himself that the only reason he hasn't made a new Buffy movie yet was because nobody would be willing to fund it. If somebody is willing to fund it now, why isn't he the one doing it? Oh yeah, and if Fran Kuzui plans on directing this, she's the stupidest person on the planet.

It is a far worse film than ALIEN³. I mean I enjoy it, but it is a really bad ALIEN movie.

ALIEN³, on the other hand, is tops. Anybody who says it's terrible obviously still has their Hicks action figure lodged firmly in their ass.

Don't get me wrong, though. ALIENS rocks.

And, man, that was a serious generalization I made up there. You know what with the action figure up the ass, etc. I know that not everybody who hates ALIEN³ hates it because it wasn't ALIENS 2 or because it killed off a couple characters who'd outlived their usefulness and whatnot. It's a flawed film, but that was the studio's fault. I give Fincher a fuckload of credit for delivering a good-looking picture with tons of goddamn merit. Charles Dance, anyone? So many scenes I could point out like Ripley trying to get Dillon to kill her and shit, man, that is some of the best shit in any of these movies. Are you so blind you can't see that, you guys with action figures up your asses? Or, you know, whoever.

Yes yes, teenage girls love vampires and movie studios love teenage girls, but this project is just a lame duck either way. Between the overlong run of Buffy, its spin off Angel, the comics of each, I'd think this universe is pretty well tapped by now. Joss has done a pretty decent job of moving on from this universe anyways, and I'd like to see more new stuff from him rather than watching him go back to this well (though I don't think I'll be bothering with Dollhouse its second season, but Firefly/Serenity was great and Dr Horrible was loads of fun). More Joss would be great, less Buffy would be great too. More Buffy and no Whedon? Yawn. And gosh, Hollywood really is getting tepid these days. Sounds like if you type reboot/remake on the cover page you got a free pass to any studio (any studio bearing the appropriate rights, of course).

moonlight. true blood. twilight. Lestat. Van Helsing. Dracula. Blade. another generic vampire story that frankly, I am completely uninterested in seeing. What never ceases to amaze me is how "they" always seem to forget that it was never the THING with Whedon, but what the THING represented that made any of it at all interesting. And it's that reputation that has Whedon's fanbase salivating at the very mention of any new franchise he creates. Why shoot yourself in the foot by not only getting it wrong, but by alienating the only people who'd care about a decade old franchinse to begin with?

They seem to think that it would be a good way to cash in on the vampire craze going on, as if Buffy was a great show simply because of the premise. That couldn't be further from the truth. It was a great show DESPITE the premise and vampire mythology. It was a great show because of the stellar writing, directing and character development. Trying to do a reboot without the talent responsible for those facets -- talent which is clearly in short supply in Hollywood -- is like trying to do a star trek reboot without using the characters of Kirk, Spock and Mccoy. It's absurd.

If I were putting up money for a movie version, I'd question Whedon's creative judgement too (especially as he let Marti Noxon run it into the ground). Of course his slobbering fans will riot if he's not involved, but as there's only 12 (or 112, according to the Fox suits who were afraid of their emails re Dollhouse), maybe it won't matter. Abrams did all right with the Star Trek reboot - maybe Buffy needs a similar reworking by a younger, fresher perspective.

I understand what they're going for here. Ride the new vampire craze, name recognition, but lose the package from the TV-show, to make it more accessible, and maybe lose some of the stigma the series had. They don't want a cult hit, they want a real one. I really liked parts of the series, but I would do the same. That said, the more rabid fans will probably start sending anthrax.

I watched the show for a while, was something of a guilty pleasure, though I gave up on it when they turned Alyson Hannigan's character into a lesbian. I have to say though, this sounds like a supremely odd decision. If this show had been on in the 70's or earlier, maybe, but something that ended less than ten years ago and has a strong fanbase?

We all know this Buffy thing is retarded, so let's focus on the real travesty: idiots who think the phrase "I could care less" actually makes sense. It's been included several times in posts in this very thread and I think even Harry uses it. Well, you're all goddamn idiots and it's starting to piss me off. The phrase is "I COULDN'T care less" meaning you couldn't possibly care less about what people are talking about than you do right now... There is no further degree to which you could care less. You are at the absolute zero of caring. THAT is what you morons are trying to say. Get it right, or I will find you all and do awful things to you. As you were...

I have to agree with what Harry on this one, fan hostility is pretty much guaranteed. I mean, I'm a Buffy fan and I'm already a little put off by this, and if I were Whedon I would be none to happy about someone Bogarting my creation. That said, I'm going to discount the possibility of them making a good film here and after the show ended, I'm not entirely certain we need another Buffy centered movie. The problem is, if they can make a good film about a vampire slayer, does it need to be Buffy, especially if you're not going to bother with Whedon? Is Hollywood's imagination completely tapped at this point or what?

Now, about this new news. Specifically, the way this production team/movie company...has put it to Whedon, if I was him...I tell them to go fuck themselves with their project. Asking him to audition as director and writer of this movie, is the heighest form of insult to Whedon and his fans. I will certainly not be there to support this movie without him!!!

I am one of the biggest Buffy fans around and an absolute Whedon nut, so the idea of taking one of the greatest characters in television history and giving her a Whedon-less reboot on the big screen is sickening. Beyond that, I can't even come up with the words to describe this. Seriously. This is fucked in the head in a crazy way.

And outside of the creative aspect of a project like this, a plan of this type doesn't even make a lick of business sense. Buffy has a pretty big fan base and any project with the Buffy name attached should be appealing to those people, because they're (we're) pretty much the only motherfuckers that are going to bother going to the theatre. You're not going to have a bunch of non-fans rushing out to make this a hit because suddenly Whedon isn't on board and the movie looks a lot more like the first big-screen attempt. This is just idiotic.

For a good discussion on could/couldn't care less, see Michael Quinion's excellent site World Wide Words: ----- In these cases people have tried to apply logic, and it has failed them. Attempts to be logical about I could care less also fail. Taken literally, if one could care less, then one must care at least a little, which is obviously the opposite of what is meant. It is so clearly logical nonsense that to condemn it for being so (as some commentators have done) misses the point. The intent is obviously sarcastic — the speaker is really saying, “As if there was something in the world that I care less about”. However, this doesn’t explain how it came about in the first place. Something caused the negative to vanish even while the original form of the expression was still very much in vogue and available for comparison. Stephen Pinker, in The Language Instinct, points out that the pattern of intonation in the two versions is very different. There’s a close link between the stress pattern of I could care less and the kind that appears in certain sarcastic or self-deprecatory phrases that are associated with the Yiddish heritage and (especially) New York Jewish speech. Perhaps the best known is I should be so lucky!, in which the real sense is often “I have no hope of being so lucky”, a closely similar stress pattern with the same sarcastic inversion of meaning. There’s no evidence to suggest that I could care less came directly from Yiddish, but the similarity is suggestive. There are other American expressions that have a similar sarcastic inversion of apparent sense, such as Tell me about it!, which usually means “Don’t tell me about it, because I know all about it already”. These may come from similar sources.

As a huge Trek fan since the 1970s, I am on record as being orgasmically excited when I heard J.J. Abrams was going to take a crack at the franchise.

But as a huge Buffy fan, I have to say I have virtually no interest in seeing a teen vampire slayer movie that Whedon isn't overseeing.

Is ANYONE in this talkback -- Whedon-lover, Whedon-hater, Whedon-indifferent -- truly keen to shell out $10 for a Whedon-free Buffy The Vampire Slayer project?

I suspect once the folks at Vertigo Entertainment wake Tuesday morning to the vast toxic tsunami of Internet Hate, they'll rethink their approach. Perhaps even before Variety can write its story on the matter.

I just hope Vertigo, rather than simply cut all development funding going forward, take the logical step of phoning Joss Whedon. Then check into the availability of the rights to Willow, Xander, Giles, Oz, Angel and Spike characters.

Any other approach to the Buffy franchise strikes me as pure Investor Kryptonite.

and they could care less if he is or isn't involved in a movie project, and a continuation of a low rated cable show in movie form is going to have a much narrower appeal than a simple reboot (though I think both ideas are equally terrible). Which is of course what the producers of this movie are banking on. While I'm sure they'll be an internet led petition frenzy, studios, at this point, have probably become pretty accustomed to ignoring fanboy rage, both cause its so ridiculous and because it has little effect on the bottom line. Their gamble here is that the name "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has more pros with brand recognition than the lack of Whedon's involvement has cons, and from a business perspective, they're probably right. Plus, without Whedon, this gets to be a studio project, where they can dictate budget, cast, story notes, etc. With Whedon they're tying their hands up pretty quickly, and again, only to appeal to a small base of fans of the television show. I have no doubt Whedon would put out a better product (though I think this is a stupid idea no matter how you pitch it), just saying, in terms of investor kyrptonite, not having Whedon would be more like the red stuff then the green kind.

On the one level, this is insensitive to Whedon, as the creator of the property, and the driving force behind it. After reading the bit about Whedon having to audition for the license he created, I'd lose respect for him if he actually got involved at this point. On another level, this is insensitive to the fan base who understand that Whedon having as much control as possible made Buffy great, and I'm already seeing Rothman-sign from Lee. On another level, this is one of those really lazy calls from Hollywood, to take something that made money once before and squeeze a little more money out of it. Opportunism based on a slew of vampire properties out on in prep now. So, in addition to being a repackage of something audiences already bought, it would be competing against newer, fresher properties, usually controlled in part by their creators. What insane gambler's logic makes producers think that because a revamp of Star Trek worked when handing it to Abrams, a revamp of a property as clever the first time as Buffy will also work?

Whedon has already proven he will fight tooth and nail for what he believes in. Namely, the shows he created. That argument doesn't hold water. Hell, he got BtVS moved to another network to keep it going. I say it will be better because of things like that. He actually CARES for the property as a whole like a child he raised, fed, and LOVED. It would be like someone just taking YOUR child at the age of 17, sending them to college, and taking credit for everything great they do later.

one is unmistakeably the best American movie made in the past 40 years. The other is an okay TV show that went on far too long after it jumped the shark. No comparison. And Whedon does *not* make it easy for himself when he blames studio meddling whenever any of his projects fails to capture a mass audience.

it'll be better. His writing has caught some sort of degenerative disease and seems to be getting worse as time goes by. Sure, there were a lot of good things...well, a few good things...that he did with the Buffyverse, but I think handing it to someone who can actually write may be a good thing. Plus, it won't thing it's half as clever as Whedon thinks Whedon is. That's a good thing. Still, there is a cheese factor associated with a "Buffy" movie.

By the way, just wanted to share what Aykroyd said about GB3: ""There'll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you'll all love when you meet her," says Aykroyd. "There'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who'll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension."
Yeah, it's gonna suck balls. My advice, start giving the AICN handjobs now if you want those good reviews.

Yep, that's a good way to put it, Harry. I've got some of that too.

The original film was lifeless and silly. It would've been completely forgotten (and I mean completely) if the television show hadn't come along. If they don't involve Whedon, I think the backlash against this would be almost more than the people making this new film would even want to bear.

We'll see.

But... gut feeling: terrible idea without the television show's involvement.

"Twilight" is simply popular because it's vampires, teenagers and retarded (literally) ideas of romance and love. That would explain why every other vampire and werewolf romance for teens out there is raking it in, too. Perhaps not as much as "Twilight" but I've rarely seen a teenage girl who reads (or emo boy) without a vampire book, lately. Not that I sit outside the high school with a six pack waiting for the bell to ring or anything.

I've always had a soft spot for the original movie. Mainly because I was forced to see it as a kid by a friend, and actually ended up liking it a lot. But you could tell the movie suffered from a movie studio trying to turn an original idea into something very mainstream and aimed at teenage girls. Joss's vision, I think, actually made it harder for them to do that as it was an actiony (sort of) vampire killing movie. If this movie gets remade, or rebooted, I have no doubt they do NOT want Joss involved so they can go HARD for the High school musical crowd. This is going to be ass-awful because they are going to water it down so much to make it appeal to mainstream audience of tweens they never got last time.

...slap in the face. Not only are they not allowing him to direct a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie, they are making him audition if he wants to write it? It doesn't make any sense, unless Roy Lee realizes just how much Whedon sucks.

I think the "Dollhouse" embrassement has revealed just how overrated Whedon really is. If I were a Hollywood producer, I wouldn't trust millions of dollars to Joss Whedon. HOWEVER, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a popular TV show, and it actually makes sense to make a low budget movie based on the series.

Making a remake of the original, Kristie Swanson movie makes no fucking sense, because that BUFFY really sucked. Whedon took a turd and shined it up very nice, but it was still a turd. Maybe Whedon has pissed off this Roy Lee guy, or it is all about the money. I am willing to bet that its about who owns what copyrights and all of that bullshit. I don't know and I don't care.

Giant difference from books vs. TV/Movie
by shutupfanboy
May 26th, 2009
09:27:38 AM
I am sorry, but going from written media to visual media is a totally different thing. There will always something lost in translation between the two. People have to get over the fact that changes will occur when you do make a book a movie or in Buffy's case a TV show to a comic. Granted, I think the Buffy book is almost unreadable right now, but we are not discussing that. We are discussing someone taking over a franchise in the same medium while the person who made the franchise is being left out in the cold. It would be the extent of Ernest Hemmingway taking over Lord of the Rings while Tolkien. Michael Bay talking over Back to the Future and so on. It makes a giant difference due to the fact that we live in an information where the story will get out and lead to a fan backlash. Studios have to realize they no longer live in the good old days where stories like this wouldn't get out til the movie or show premiered. Those days are long gone and the internet fanbase for good or bad can make or break some projects.

Reboot means starting over again but with a fresh vision and new take on the material.

We'll have to agree to disagree that Watchmen was good. Personally. I thought it got the message of the original pathetically wrong. But here's something I notice... technically, the TV show was the reboot. Yeah. yeah, I know the movie wasn't true to Whedon's vision, but is anybody else tired of hearing how when one of Whedon's projects (Alien Resurrection, Titan AE, Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse - in other words, pretty much anything other than Buffy or Toy Story) fails to grab the public's attention, it's always "THE STUDIO'S FAULT?" The guy's a bit of a whiner.

And the idea of a valley girl (like gag me with a spoon) being the savior/warrior was explored with much more wit and subtlety on the series than the obvious movie. Beside, the whole concept is dated. Yes, vapid girls in California will always exist, but this has been played out.

You forgot Angel...which maybe you just lumped in as being part of Buffy. But that is still 12 seasons of television that people loved compared to two part seasons and a couple failed movies. In other words, he's had way more time succeeding than failing. And then there is Dr. HOrrible, which was a huge hit despite Whedon making it on his own dime and releasing it for free. But guess what, that was his complete product without studios involvement and people loved it. The fact is that Fox messed with Firefly from day one, and it got bounced around. Yet it had a huge following and still sells DVDs to this day. Meanwhile, Serenity sucked and in my opinion felt completely opposite from the show in many ways. Whose fault is that? I can only assume the studio who felt certain big effects or set pieces needed to be done to justify spending big money. People have bashed DOllhouse, but it is a well known FACT that Fox wanted a show completely different from Joss's idea. Joss wanted a serial type show focusing on the conspiracy idea, while Fox wanted the cheesy mystery of the week, standalong type eps that people (critics and fans alike) all hated. Funny how, again, when Joss gets to play with his own ideas (the serial conspiracy), those are the episodes that had fans and critics saying the show had promise. And lets not forget that Fox asked WHedon to pitch his S2 ideas...and they liked it enough to renew it. So I think bashing Whedon for failing is more than a little revisionist history.

To answer you, those two shows should not be mentioned in the same breath as BTVS, and here in lies the problem you and the majority of other Whedonites hold his work in to high an esteem than is really deserving.

You will never see it that way and I can appreciate that but realise the general cinema going public including I would say 70-80% of folks who might be interested in seeing a movie about a girl who slays vampires will NOT know who Joss Wheeeedon is, even if they may be familiar with the old show.

NE and TP were proper cult shows that became massively popular (worldwide) whereas BTVS was just a popular show with ratings that never reflected the amount of online adoration it got.

The question is WHY? Money would be an easy answer, but a tad too easy. If they wanted to make money they'd hire Whedon, Gellar and all the other talent in front and behind the camera and get a kick-ass hit. Now they'll make a C-grade direct to TV movie that'll run infamously on ungodly hours for years to come. Something tells me this is a rights issue and that if Kuzui doesn't do something with the "property" (yuck, that word) they will loose the rights to everything Buffy. I fear it's a 1994-Fantastic-Four thingy that makes sure Something is made. O, and Spandau Belly: I also liked Miami Vice movie. So I am not the only one?

Then it's ok to reboot this. You can't have it both ways. I like Whedon, but if he doesn't own it and someone wants to try something different that might work then there isn't much you can say. If you don't like it, then you always have the Whedon version. It might be interesting to me if it was handled more seriously with some actual horror. Otherwise, you would be doing a weaker version of Whedon and what would be the point of that? If anyone wants to argue that Buffy wasn't a bit ridiculous at times then I point to the episode where John Ritter was an android.

1. It's cashing in on the revelation of TWILIGHT that vampire slaying/romance focused on girl power is very lucrative. They are right, it is lucrative.

2. They aren't going to cast Gellar or Kristy Swanson, they are going to go with someone young, you know, like Gellar and Swanson WERE.

3. Whedon isn't essential, and in fact, episodes of the Buffy and Angel series that were solely penned and directed by him tended to be the most shallow and cartoonish visions of the characters. The creative teams that fleshed out the characters often left Whedon behind in their understanding of the characters. DOLLHOUSE has been embarassing, and proves that Whedon can really do wrong. But if the rumor of DOLLHOUSE's renewal is true, it proves that, Whedon or not, a wierd and creepy premise that involves hot young girls in sexual (and other) slavery is appealing, in other words, sex sells. All they gotta do to sell a Buffy remake is make it sexy. Despair, or rejoice, as is your wont.

It just doesn't work if the audience needs to have watched the series, especially one with a deep mythology. Trek did the smart thing and wiped the mythology out. Buffy would be smart to do the same. It's a completely different business model when you're talking about dumping $75 million into 2 hours of entertainment rather than $13 million into 26 episodes. Dump Whedon, take a chance at a reboot, you've got a much better chance at cashing in than staying anchored to the 7 seasons of backstory from the TV show. Will it suck? Probably, but most movies do these days.

I've been reading this site now for a few years, and this is my first talkback. Why? Well I'm not too much of a talker on message boards and what not...but this news here really put the icing on the cake. Buffy without Whedon is disrespectful to fans of the series, plain and simple. True fans who have been with the series since the beginning, have been with these characters for some time, and the people who played them like Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz,Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan and many more. Is it the success of Twilight that made Hollywood want to ‘revamp’ the Vampire genre? Who knows, but they shouldn't forget that the story of Buffy existed many years before Stephanie Meyers’ book, and with that the Vampire Diaries series (which L.J. Smith is a far better writer in my opinion than Meyer, although I do like Twilight). The original Buffy film I do love, and yes a series with brand new actors came in to play. But it worked, and to do so again, especially without Joss Whedon, and the actors of the series who fans were with for 7 seasons (and 5 of Angel) is crazy. Will I drop $10.00 to see this ‘new’ Buffy? Hell no.

The original crew are either 70, 80, or dead. The original buffy cast, aren't, only their career's are dead. I blame Twilight, because of the in the Buffy series, there was a tormented vampire called Angel, but we all know Buffy was better, and Twilight was rubbish. So why can't the producers think of something original, and go off with the original crew and create a whole new franchise. It's going to flop big time, because the new cast will be compared to the old cast, the story will be a Twilight clone, as well as the original is still fresh in people's minds.

I'm not totally against this idea. I jumped on the Buffy bandwagon in Season 2 and enjoyed it for most of the run (though I thought the UPN years were less than stellar). I would hope that they would get Whedon involved at a producer-level, but I'm afraid if he wrote it there could be problems. I have not read the comics, but I have heard from my friends that have that they are very hit-or-miss. I'm afraid Joss would try to stay true to all of the continuity he has created throughout all of the different forms of media (tv and comics). I actually think Buffy would be better served with a fresh start getting back to what made Seasons 2 and 3 great (i.e. no Dawn, Xander and Willow interaction, Buffy and Angel romance, etc.) I think Joss may have too much baggage/pride to reboot this properly. I think it could be interesting to have a fresh take. Though I do think it is pretty shitty to not have Whedon involved in some form.

by Domi'sInnerChild
May 26th, 2009

Not because it wasn't Aliens, but because the alien lacked motivation (killed all the potential hosts for no reason), tried to be all stylistic for no logical reason (a planet of lice? What about the dog? Military ship blows up in opening scene due to a little electrical fire? No halon in the future? Escape pod with no landing gear crashes on the nearest planet killing everybody but Ripley? A prison planet allowed to go on despite all its costs because they found religion? The Alien not cooconing Ripley up and letting her wander around where she could potentially fall into vats of molten lead? etc. etc.). While Alien Reserection was equally bad, I really place a lot of the blame on the director and production. Who's brilliant idea was it to stick a writer who's really good with dialog with a foreign director that is going to blow the timing of every joke and go off on his own with the silly (listen the commentary track. He's patting himself on the back for how funny it was to have locks work by the smell of your breath... ugh)?

The point of Buffy to some extant is to make fun of horror movie genre. It is the total opposite of a horror movie since the victim is kicking ass instead of getting slaughtered. I really hate this mind set that, because Dark Knight and other darker films worked all super-hero films have to be dark. I miss the Christopher Reeves' Superman days and even the first Spidey were it was light hearted. They were fun movies that made a ton of cash. Buffy was dark at times, but still had light moments as well. Hollywood has to realize that certain things shouldn't be dark like Superman Returns is a prime example of that. Plus, Dark Knight only made as much as it did cause Heath was a retard. It was going to make money, but a billion world wide would not have happened if Ledger was alive today and he would not have an academy award either.

I know the buffy fans think they number in the billions and their opinion actually has an effect on box office but its just not there. Buffy struggled from season one. The ratings were always low and it was only through Whedon's negotiation skill that there was a season 6 and 7. Angel was in the same boat and again Whedon was able to convince the execs to finance a limited budget Season 5. Firefly couldnt even make it a full season and the movie bombed. Dollhouse is on life support only getting a second chance by Whedon pulling an Angel with a cut budget. As successful as the comic and Dr. Horrible were they didnt set the world on fire. The comic couldnt even sell 100,000 issues last month.

I know some people want to perpetuate the myth that everything Whedon touched was gold but its not true. He has a very good business sense and great negotiation skill and he picks good people. Plus he can really stir up his fanbase. That is his genius not the actual stories he tells.

Look on this site a few months back when the rabid fans were boycotting Wolverine. They did such a good job that they are already working on the sequel and Deadpool spin off. I hate to break it to some of you but all the blogs, twitterings and talkbacks in the world aren't going to have one iota of effect on boxoffice.

Twilight vs Buffy

May 26th, 2009

Twilight isn't a successful movie because it has a brooding vampire love story. It is successful because it is based on a series of books that already had a massive tween following. Kind of like Harry Potter fans going to see the Harry POtter movies in droves. If they think they can bank on this audience, who already have a vampire love stroy franchise to follow, they are sadly mistaken. It would be like trying to sell a Harry Potter clone to fans of the books. These tween probably didn't watch the original movie or even the TV show. They will see this reboot for what it is...a feeble attempt to copy Twilight. Why bother when they are already getting what they want?

As a huge Buffy and Whedon fan, I'm dismayed at all the hate. I make no assumptions that Buffy fan numbers are in the billions, but I do know that the people who claim this fandom are very passionate. I'm shocked that people on a website dedicated to fandom in general would be so hateful. This isn't like Star Trek where the original show aired decades ago...Buffy ended in 2003 and maybe we think the guy who came up with the story, mythology and created the whole damn universe should have the rights over his own shit or ATLEAST be consulted isn't alot to ask for. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong. I'll not be seeing this crap and I wish Hollywood could find some fucking artistic integrity once and a while. Stop with the hate and let's find some unity so we can stop this SHIT from happening to every franchise and fandom we are geeks love. Just my thoughts...

The cult will have zero impact. The geek niche pushed Snakes on a plane and Watchmen and they didnt help those movies one bit. The only selling point of the cult fans are that they will rebuy the same dvd everytime a deleted scene is added.

I can tell you how this movie will go down. Buffy will slay vamps in her cheerleading uniform. She will fall in love with a good vampire so they can have a romeo/juliet vibe. There will be a happy ending with Buffy and the vamp ending up together in the end. As much as Whedon fans will hate that movie it will still make more money then anything Whedon would have come up with.

I think you're wrong (or flame-baiting) on most points, but this one stuck out: "I know the buffy fans think they number in the billions and their opinion actually has an effect on box office..."

Part of the reason the show has retained a rabid following is because of its small, insular community. The show speaks to directly to people, and they get very protective of it (example: this talkback). The fandom doesn't think they number in the billions; Hell, that's part of the appeal. They enjoy that they have this relatively private thing to enjoy amongst themselves. I WOULD argue, however, that their rejection of this property would certaintly affect the box office. It's not a popular property (again, going against your "billions" comment) and would need the fans on the street to rally around it and help promote it ("No, really, it's not as lame as the premise sounds!"). This effectively says they don't care about what we think made the show great (nor do they understand it). They are going to go with the cheapest product available.

The less i would mind a fresh take on Buffy. It's a fun, simple idea, the more baggage, the less fun. The longer her story got, the more it collapsed under it's own weight. (It still had great ideas. Season 6 "Life is the real Big Bad" could've been awesome, came really close, but a lot of things ruined it.) I'm ready for a fresh take. If Whedon has half as many ideas, as the fandom thinks, he'll move on to do new, better things.

by Jack_Griffin
May 26th, 2009
02:18:38 PM
This is a terrible idea. Put aside the "Whedon sucks/No he doesn't" stuff for a sec and look at this from a marketing standpoint. The reason that the name "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has ANY financial value is because of the TV show. And regardless of what you think of Whedon as a writer, the show achieved widespread critical acclaim as a superb TV series - one of the best of the past 20 years, if not ever. For a studio to ignore that pedigree and create a product that feels and tastes totally different from what the public is expecting is like, well, marketing root beer in a Coke can. Nothing against root beer - I like it fine - but if your target audience is the Coke fans, then what the hell are you doing putting root beer in there? It's balls-out silly.

As much as I'd like to see a movie from the show, I understand why that movie would bomb. As long as they do something as creative as the show was with people just as talented I'll give it a shot.

The network screwed him over, the movie wasn't marketed properly, the director rewrote him - Whedon should be a man and just admit that not everybody likes his stuff. Arrested Development did an episode where they dealt with this - Michael Bluth said "maybe wer'e just not that likeable." Maybe Whedon is doomed to cult status. Deal with it.

"Watchmen" was maybe a C+ film, a 6.5/10. As a superhero film it was a B-/B, maybe a 7/7.5 allowing for the intrinsic problems of making a superhero film. As an adaptation of "Watchmen" it was a D, maybe a 5. It played all the right notes but failed to reproduce the song that Moore and Gibbons created. It was empty, which was astounding, because the comic was overstuffed with ideas and themes. "Watchmnen" was just a superhero movie. That's all. Sad. Without proof, I still have assume you are...what's the opposite of fanwanking? Unfan-wanking? I mean, Joss does talk a lot about his process but most Whedonites take what he says and try to read into what he is implying, ergo, fanwanking. I do it all the time. Still not factual though.

It's like let's say he says that Dollhouse was kinda of shock for him after the complete freedom he had doing Dr.H. A fanwanker will take that and say that Joss didn't like the network interference sticking it's nose in. But that's not really what he is saying, is it?

Kubrick? Oh, gods, that's funny. I'd say he's more like Lewis Gilbert, who did a number of action-oriented dramas, none memorable, plus several Bond pictures. Decent sense of composition, staged action well, drew passably good performances from his actors. He also did some good, straight dramatic work, like "Alfie." No Kubrick, he, and no Kubrick, Snyder.

Imagine a Kubrick "Watchmen." It would have been slow-moving, but imagine it. Wow. Brutal, mean-spirited, but filled with hope.

A Kubrick "Watchmen" would be devoid of hope. Look at his "Clockwork Orange" where he changed the ending that implied that man can change and put in the twisted, foreboding image of Alex imagining all the things he can do again.

That is the power of Kubrick. He doesn't have to give you hope because he can give you honesty.

Joss Whedon and his brother are apparently huge douchebags. Anyone that I know that has had any dealings with him has vouched that he IS a total "holier than thou" ass.

That said, I've enjoyed almost everything he's put to screen. I hated Alien Resurrection, but Toy Story is a brilliant movie. I am a huge Buffy/Angel fan (despite the episodes that David Greenwalt wrote...wanna talk about a douche...WOW! I helped him move once.)

Haven't seen ANY of Dollhouse...almost don't wanna. I dunno, I'll see it eventually.

I'm not necessarily pissed about this remake idea, but I am rather confused. I know SMG has stated she is done with this character several times, but putting her in a big budger movie with the rest of the Scoobies...wouldn't that be a no-brainer as compared to taking the further chance of changing EVERYTHING...and you can't do the "it's another slayer" thing since they're apparently still going with "Buffy"....just weird.

Kubrick could be filled with hope, when he wanted to be. He made "Paths of Glory" and "A Clockwork Orange," but he also made "Spartacus" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." "Spartacus," admittedly as a hired gun, shouts that honorable death, especially a death sending a message, means something. "2001" is emotionally empty until Hal's death and the finale, but its message of transcendence is one of hope, though in a different sense. Kubrick could have gone either way with "Watchmen." I like to think he would have preferred the hope of Dreiberg and Laurie to the nihilism and spiritual emptiness of Rorschach and Veidt.

The ending of the "Clockwork Orange" novel, where Alex remains depraved, was the ending in all American editions until 1986. The book's US publisher chose to excise the hopeful ending. Kubrick was familiar with this version of the story, having claimed he was not aware of the final chaper.

would think of doing this without Whedon's TV version as the template. The characters are what was grea: Xander, Oz, Willow and Spike are just irreplaceable. Casting isn't so important to me, The old cast was ok but what if they cast a girl who can actually fight as the Buffster? I liked SMG as buffy but I never for a second bought her as an asskicker. I kind of went with it because the quality and characters of the show were great. Whedon doesn't need to write it, There's a whole slew of guys who can write Whedonesque Buffy better than Whedon can these days. (just look at the comics)

about a buffy film. and SMG said that she had read the Script for the film and liked it. The story was this buffy was living a quiet life and had given up slaying after the demise of hellmouth. A rather stupid vampire kills buffys daughter. This brings buffy out of retirement and onto the warpath. Where the vampires have to face the wrath of buffy is in enraged at having her daughter killed by vampires.

But this whole idea is idiotic. As others have said they must be hoping to cash in on this twilight crap. And I also assume they have no interest in using SMG? My guess would be that either Whdeon is just too busy and they feel they need to act fast or they simply don't like Whedon's vision for the character.

Before I begin...

May 26th, 2009
05:15:50 PM
...let me make clear the following. I like Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible, Dollhouse and Astonishing X-Men.

Now...I have, in my life as a geek, been repeatedly fucked off by the following line, or variations thereof:

“yeah but you’re going to say that because you love everything X does”

EXCUSE ME?

What the fuck does that even mean? Do you actually believe anyone like this exists?

I have a tattoo related to my favourite band on my arm. My favourite band is my favourite thing (which isn’t a human being) in my life. I expect so much from them that their next record would have to mindfuck me into oblivion to live up to, and exceed past glories. Every time I have expected the impossible and every time have been blown away. If their next album was shit, I would be the first person to say it was shit. I would be thoroughly upset by this development. But I wouldn’t fool myself into thinking that it was good to justify the continued presence of the tattoo. I wouldn’t remove the tattoo. I wouldn’t even be embarrassed to talk to people about what it meant. Because the reasons I got the tattoo - the music they have made, the ways it changed my life, the memories of how it made me feel on countless occasions, will never change. That’s done.

So...I do NOT love everything THEY DO. I love everything they HAVE DONE.

They haven’t done anything to displease me. YET.

There is a “yet”. There is always a fucking “yet”. The fact is that either I might die or the band might break up before that “yet” comes.

Now, I don’t have a Joss Whedon tattoo. And the tattoo theory is the one vaguely convincing reason someone would have for this kind of devotion.

Seriously, I want someone to EXPLAIN this retarded concept to me.

What possible loyalty could I have to Joss Whedon that isn’t related to the fact that he has brought, and continues to bring, a fair amount of joy to my life through his projects? Eh? Why the fuck would I decide that I worship this chubby, not altogether attractive*, ginger dude, whose works I often won’t discuss in public to avoid embarrassment, and who I’ve never even met, to the point where I would blindly “just love everything he does” without a critical eye? (Liked, but didn’t love Dollhouse) Can someone tell me please?

There are people who - yeah I like everything they’ve done. And the reason for that is simply this: I like everything they’ve done. That’s fucking it, okay? If I didn’t like the next thing they do then that statement isn’t true any more but so far, I have liked everything. Whedon is one, or Chris Morris, for instance. Or to an extent, Matt and Trey. I love Mike Patton more than any of those people. He’s my fucking hero. But fuck me has he done some shit in his time. If I felt that way about anyone it would be him.

If Whedon took control of this film, I’d have an unreasonably high expectation of it. I know what he’s capable of and I’d want all of it and a bit more, dammit. In other words, IT WOULD MAKE IT LESS LIKELY THAT I WOULD LOVE IT, NOT MORE. Do you see? Of course, I could still love it - I built Serenity up something chronic and still loved it...but if you think I’d have “blindly” accepted anything “my God” Joss did to my beloved Firefly you’re fucking mistaken.

At the end of the day, answer me this one, cretins. I loved the work of George Lucas for 20 years. I thought he was the most creative person in film. A genius, said I, a word often used to describe him back then actually. I thought he simply could do no wrong.

SO WHY THE FUCK DID I HATE THE PREQUELS SO MUCH?

Answer: Because I didn’t love everything he did. I loved everything he HAD DONE. Then he did something I didn’t fucking like, not one bit. It didn’t live up to his legacy.

Nobody loves everything someone does unless they have some kind of an invested interest. Oh yes honey that’s a lovely picture, I’ll just pop it on the fridge for you. Joss isn’t my fucking 3 year old so why the fuck would I have any interest in praising him undeservedly?

So yeah...stop using that insane argument. Buncha dickwads.

*Joss you’re a beautiful and wonderful human being. But you know damn well what I’m saying.
Okay so...
by boosebaster
May 26th, 2009
05:16:25 PM
...the point I actually meant to make was that I fucking love Buffy. LOVE it. Have a lot of love for Whedon too.

But I don’t think this is a horrific idea at all.

If it sucks: “Ha ha, you losers, you couldn’t fucking hope to stand up to the might of THE WHEDONATOR, what a piece of crap that was!” If it’s great: “Man, I was so wrong, that was great! Possibly even better written than the show! Maybe they didn’t need Joss after all!”

Where do I lose? Either way I’m perfectly content in life. And one way might lead to a pleasant surprise. Where’s the bad?

The only thing I care about as a fan of films, is that it is a good film. I don’t want to see them put a thoughtless pile of crap together but I never want to see anyone do that. I’d be mildly saddened that there was another shit film in the world and disappointed they couldn’t do more with a universe I love, that’s all. And it could in no way “destroy the legacy” of my beloved Buffy either. What’s it going to do, break into my house and shit on my DVDs? Grow up.

Buffy nerds, how the hell do you know in advance that this will not be great? The odds aren’t good (especially if Kazui directs) but you know jack shit until you’ve seen it, and at the moment it’s at the fucking RUMOUR stage. Stay your motherfucking hands, Buffy people, we’re supposed to be better and more tolerant than that, or did the show you claim to love mean nothing to you? Maybe I’m wrong, a minority, maybe it is Joss specifically that people are into and not his work.

Either way, it will put Buffy on the agenda again. People will talk about it. DVD sales will get a boost. Maybe one person will discover Buffy and maybe a million will. A shit film wouldn’t really prevent people buying the DVDs. The idea of any new people discovering Buffy is a pleasant one to me.

Again, where is the big bad?

And if Joss doesn’t own the rights, then he doesn’t own the rights. It’s business. As creator I’d assume he owned them at some point, and chose to sell, knowing full well what that could mean in the future. If this is rebooted, he shouldn’t be involved. Wouldn’t mind if he could do anything to ensure it ended up being good without directly meddling in its conception or delivery (like choosing a writer / director...while staying away from the Buffy usuals), that would be fine. Or if the guy made some money from it, also fine.

The only thing Buffy fans have legitimately got to be angry about beyond this is that it would mean that SMG, DB, JM and the rest of the crew will never hit the big screen together in the post-season 8 (or 7 if you haven’t kept up) Buffyverse. They want THAT movie (I’d love to see it too, to be fair), that’s why they’re bitching so much.

Personally I’d do that first while you still [just about] could and then reboot it 15 years down the line.

And to echo many comments on here, there is nothing we could do about this going ahead. Every Buffy fan in the world refusing to see this film would not prevent it going Transformers huge if it was going to anyway.

The weirdest thing about this is the amount of time since Buffy actually ended. What’s next, rebooting LOST in 2011?

Sometime ago. Whedon said that making the buffy movie was ahellish experience for him. before that he nad the kuzuis got on great and were the best of friends. All that changed during the making of the film. gradually over time whedon felt that he was being phased out of the production process. the rubel kuzuis more and more sided with the studio. Whedon felt that at the very end had been frozen out of the film process whilst making buffy the movie. and not one of his ideas made into the movie.

I think the series.. really did run its course.. and the movie? It was cheesey.. it just was.. but fun cheese.. but tonally very differnt than the series EVER was. BUT.. the thing is.. the new movie.. they can't possibly have the rights to ANY of the characters.. aside from those present in the original film.. meaning.. NO Oz, Angel, Willow.. Anya.. Giles.. or.. ANY of htem.. I am guessing THOSE character rights lie with Mutant Enemy and Joss Whedon.. although the Buffy character must remain with Kuzui.. who did at LEAST, unlike JJ and company have SOMETHING to do with Buffy... Did JJ and crew have ANYTHING to do with Star Trek? nope.. j now.. the bad news.. yeah.. its going to be a cheap reboot/Twilight wannabe movie.. let's face it.. that's just the reality.

Sorry I missed your comment but you have to admit that some Buffy fans (and fans of any franchise) believe their numbers are bigger then they actually are. Being a small passionate group is awesome and sharing that love is great. You seem to have a solid grasp of the situation. Some people do not. Every time something Whedon does fails they blame everyone but Whedon. Sometimes they go the other route and play the "Whedon is just to smart for the common people to understand" card. The most militant of the Whedonites cant stand any criticism of the man at all and try and get people banned or their posts removed just for disagreeing with them.

In a perfect world it would be nice for Fox to give Whedon a shot at Buffy but Serenity alone is enough to give them a valid reason to hesitate. Fox has two choices. Make Buffy for around 15 million and easily make 30-40 million. Or give it to Whedon to make for around 30-40 million and get back about 30-40 million. The plus for the Whedon version is they can continually rerelease the DVD every 3 months with a bonus commentary and milk the fans for years. Short term a generic 15 million Buffy makes Fox more money. (and the movie will suck.)

If you don't understand why a Buffy fan may be upset about this, you're just not very smart. Who can answer that question? I'm a huge Buffy-Angel fan, but Serenity truly was second rate, and I only watched Dollhouse until I realized it was a show about hookers (took me three weeks - yeah I'm a little slow sometimes), and not very interesting hookers, at that. I thought they were supposed to be spipes or something ...

Joss doesn't own the rights, and he never did. A screenwriter almost never owns his script - it is sold to the studio in perpetuity - that's the way it's always been, and Joss would have been in no position to negotiate that point at the time he sold the "Buffy" movie script. He needed the Kazuis to sign off on the TV Series, but they don't need anything from him. They might have to pay him something but they don't need his permission

Major dif between trek and Buffy re-imagining
by LadyAnjel
May 26th, 2009
07:50:19 PM
Loved trek and enjoyed many of the movies with the original cast. Loved the new trek movie. But unlike trek - a movie with a new cast for Buffy is not the same. The actors - who are fresh in our minds from the long running TV series are not only all alive but they are all young enough to reprise their roles for the big screens. The trek actors (some of whom have passed on) could not truly have continued in the same vein. Had the original Star Trek the movie NOT been made with the original series actors IMO it would not have garnered the interest it did. A legion of brassed off Buffy fans will protest and not allow their relations, friends or co-workers to go see this movie. Buffy is NOT Firefly or Dollhouse. Firefly was short lived on TV and while it had many fans - it didn't have the TV numbers or the Movie numbers to support the kind of profit the studios expect. Dollhouse is new and finding its ground. I was not a fan of Firefly and I watch Dollhouse on occasion but it hasn't really hooked me. I only go back cause there isn't anything on on friday nights and on occasion I'm home. Buffy on the other hand had a long and strong in the numbers - running series. 7 years, comic books, books, magazines, merchandise up the kazoo, internet fanfic second only to.. say it with me.. Star Trek. It really is huge. And even after 5-6 years off the air or so - it still has a strong and vocal following.. as evidence in this talkback and other places online. Gutting the existence of the series so soon and re-imaging it is just a slap in the face to those loyal fans who - whatever you may think about the mass audience - WILL be the ones who are the core viewers or potential core viewers of this project. And they will voice their opinion loudly - buy NOT buying tickets. Variety or the Hollywood reporter - I can't remember which- wrote an article about the death of the WB. And they clearly stated that one of the main reasons was the huge fan backlash due to the cancellation of Angel. Buffy fans wanted the verse to continue and the spiteful execs at the WB tossed it even tho it was their only ratings riser that year. So fans united and left the WB in force. Now defunct WB was a result of fans who are mad, vengeful and unforgiving. If they do this movie without Joss.. the Kuzuls and Studio will know that power. By the lack of ticket sales. It isn't about Joss (tho we respect him) it is about OUR wants and we want the original cast!

If anyone saw the film, and read the script for Alien Resurrection, they are two different things. The script was way better, and it had more to do with how the Aliens sense fear in the victim. It's a good read, but the result was a mess. Even though it was A-OK, the film stunk.

Seriously? Are they seriously attempting to rape the Buffyverse just to capitalize on the Twilight craze? Which, BTW, is a steaming pile of poo on its own, much less next to a witty, intelligent show like Buffy. That being said, I have to throw a huge pile of happiness @ Joss for his wonderfully understated middle finger of a reply: "I hope it's cool." It's a nice way of saying, "sure, do your thing, earn your right to praise and success if you can, but you can't touch me or what I've done." It might be a "Buffy" movie, but it's not a Buffyverse movie.

They can't obviously go that way with the next slayer after Buffy. So this will be the Never Say Never Again to TV-Buffy's Thunderball (and I guess the original movie is the Thunderball book) What do they think they have the rights to any way? The movie rights to just BVS or to BVS the TV-series? If they have the movie rights to just the concept or the Character of Buffy based on the first script and movie, they maybe can't use any character created for the TV-show? And those characters is what made the series work!

That's kind of how this comes off to me and, I'm sure, some Buffy fans. I mean, we're not talking Daddy divorced and here's the step-mom...we're talking distant uncle called the hitman who birthed the Raping Of Your Childhood Evil. Sooo not the same. P.S. That is when you cross the line from fan to fanatic. You might as well sign up as a scientologist and get your theta waves read. Not only does it paint Buffy fans as psychos but there are plenty of people that will see it just out of spite. All the Buffy fans can lock up all their family members in the basement and guard them with a shotgun and it still wont stop the millions of 13 year old Twileens from seeing it. Again some of you grossly over estimate your numbers and impact on boxoffice. Star Trek was not a hit because of the trekkies and wouldnt have been a flop if they hated it.

Joss Whedon was developing that movie at Universal Studios several years ago and said that the script was finished and that it was ready to shoot, he was only debating as to whether he'd shoot it before Wonder Woman, or after that film's shooting schedule, well, Wonder Woman wasn't to be, so Goners should have been Joss' next film. He claimed that there were similarities to Buffy? So where is the movie "Goners", already?

"Hey Bill, don't see that movie." "Uh, why not? It looks funny." "Yeah, but they didn't get this guy involved, so I don't support it." "What guy?" "Joss Whedon. From the TV show!" "Who? you can't call that good. the movie was literally and figuratively an abortion. parts of the screened moments were signature whedon (space pirates, wheelchair dude and sadist survive), but there's no way in hell that was a good script. aliens on earth? seriously? look, the only way that might work is if humans aren't on the earth, because a premise for the xenomorph-human relations is that xenomorphs are uncontrollable. they infest, take over, and we run away with what's left of our skin dangling and tail between our legs. and hello! did anyone notice that ripley was yet another buffy clone? in fact, everything to do with ripley was an abomination. I don't care if he didn't originally plan for that character. there she is! the entire script is built around ripley and her "children." look, nobody's perfect. he's a phenomenal writer, but let's not deify quite yet, eh?

They will not rry to make a good or successful movie. I doubt that the budget will even be impressive. Their only manuever here is to release a film, or films, into the marketplace...as an advertisement for DVD sales, in post. In other words, this is about gaining shelf space in stores and online next to, or nearby, pre-existing Buffy DVDs, from the old TV show, to the original movie. This is about fooling the consumer into buying, and or, renting this new film, thinking that they are getting something that is Whedon written...and approved, nothing more. It is a marketing bait and switch. Yes, it is only through the DVD market that they hope to make their money.

This is not the same situation as "Star Trek." In Star Trek's situation, Paramount's "managers" of the franchise (Berman and Braga) had run the franchise into the ground, to the point that "Star Trek" was almost doomed. Fresh talent, in the form of J.J. Abrams, was brought in. In this case, it's the "team" behind that *awful Buffy movie* that wants a go at the "relaunch." What everyone's forgetting is that the TV Buffyverse *is* the relaunch. This would be like Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who made a so-so movie about a gateway to another planet, wanting to do a relaunch of the more successful TV franchise known as "Stargate SG-1."

I loved the TV show and placed many a hotpocket wager on these very talkbacks but in my heart of hearts I always thought Kristy Swanson was a better Buffy in a really shitty movie. Let's see movie Buffy pushing 40 and still finding time to stake the bloodsuckers only this time make them actually scary. Even if they go for a full on remake and ditch Sunnydale, The Scoobies, Angel, Spike, Dru and The Helllmouth I wouldn't be so pissed. A third Buffyverse would work if they don't do a pale imitation of all the stuff they claim they're not gonna lift from the TV show. Basically it would only work if this new Buffy only fought Vampires. Vampires who're actually scary. They can keep the snappy dialogue in too as long as it's juxtaposed with tension and suspense. I honestly don't want to see a SMG/Sunnydale Buffy movie. Fox already tried this with X-Files and you saw how shitty that went.
