Doomsday for Smallville
by shutupfanboy
May 21st, 2009
02:26:52 PM
This show had some great momentum after season six and died on its constant need to jam lame ass characters like Lana, Chloe and Lex down people's throats. The only reason it got a renew was the ratings were up in the beginning of the season, because there was no Lana and Lex dragging the show down. So, they had to do some original things. Now if they had waited after the Doomsday storyline, it would be canceled. This was the most Jekkyl/Hyde season of a TV show ever. I just hope to God, they realize people want a show about Superman not Clark Kent and let him be Superman for most of the season instead of waiting til the last epsiode.

They should have left "Smallville" with "Supernatural" on Thursday nights. If they're trying to give their new teenage vampire show a boost, why did they schedule it before "Supernatural" and not after? Now SN has a weak lead-in. Couldn't they have at least paired SV with "Reaper" on Friday nights instead of a freaking "Top Model" rerun? I thought they were hoping for 2 more seasons of "Smallville", but Friday night is considered the death slot, especially for a show in its 9th season.
Season 9 was going to be SMALLVILLE's last anyway
by SpyGuy

The Friday Death Slot will just hasten things a bit, which is a shame because Season 8 was actually good during the episodes that didn't feature Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang.

BTW, the season finale, which killed off Henry James Olsen and explained that the James Bartholomew Olsen from Superman lore is his younger brother was a fucking brilliant idea to kill off "Jimmy" and correct the age discrepancy all in one fell swoop.

Smallville deserves better

I know a lot of people give that show shit, but name another sci-fi/fantasy show so good in it's EIGHTH season. Season eight was remarkably strong all around, with the Lana'Lex shit put on the back burner and more of Erica Durance's enchanting Lois put front and center. And the season finale twist involving Jimmy was genuinely startling. Even though season nine was slated to be the last one anyways, it's a shame it's being put out to pasture on Friday nights. It deserved more respect than that.

i've been re-watching Angel and can't believe it's almost ten years old and NOTHING has even come close to it, at least to me, in terms of caring about the characters and being excited about what comes next, sans Lost. why doesn't Whedon drop Dollhouse and return with some more stories from the Angelverse? Talk about a huge universe full of amazing, beloved characters just going to complete waste.

Great just what we needed. If it's not rich white teens with "problems" they're jumping on the vampire bandwagon (yes, the premise for this came about before that other abomination - Twilight, but there's no way it would be here if that hadn't exploded). Supernatural is the only decent thing the CW has, and even that can only redeem this network so much.

Should have been crap this year, given that Michael Rosenbaum left the show. It was surprisingly good, most of the season. ... than Buffy or Angel. Mind you, I was a great fan of all those shows. IMHO, the tone and direction was less about painting sub-text and metaphor (e.g., high school as hell) than straight up horror and monster of the week.

Whedon's protagonists and antagonists are nuanced, but the brothers Winchester, well, not so much. Sam and Dean are compelling and their adventures are now epic, but I would never characterize them as operatic.

Moreover, there was even a producer and directorial connection to the X-Files with John Shiban, David Nutter and the late Kim Manners. By the way, I always thought it was neat that Kim's brother Kelly was a significant contributor to Buffy, Angel, & Dollhouse.

The finale felt like the show production just ran out of funds. I thought S8 was pretty hit or miss, but they put together some decent eps and I thought they had a good build-up to the finale. And then, I don't know, they just took a wrong turn because the finale was boring and disjointed. I can't say I mind the show getting dumped to Fridays. I've been a viewer almost since the beginning, but Smallville is notorious for not paying off its storylines. The one thing they had to do was the big Clark/Doomsday fight, and they couldn't even do that. I wish this show had ended after it's fifth season, that was a pretty good one.

is pretty minimalist, like an epic poem. There are not many interpersonal relationships. Where shows like Buffy, they have a whole web of them, here's only Sam and Dean, and some occasional enemies/allies. They don't have "regular lives" they're lonely hunters 24/7. It's more old school straightforward storytelling, but it works perfectly given the whole "third testament, gospel of Winchester" element they gave to the story. "Here are the heroes, who slay the monsters." Epic and old school.

I see that The CW has kept with the proud tradition of all the other (once) fledgling networks (Fox, UPN & The WB) in using ethnic-themed programming as a loss leader to gain a little traction, and once said traction has been gained, they begin to ween themselves by replacing those ethnic shows with the typical "LILLY-WHITE" status quo programs, like 90201, etc. I can't believe that they couldn't at least kept The Game. That show had a huge black demographic. Dawn Steel has really shown herself to be a real cunt...Hell, last year, she ignored the producers of Girlfriends plea to allow them to tie up the loose plot threads for their last season, thus leaving its' loyal audience hanging in the wind after 7 seasons on the air. This upcoming seaon will be the first without any true ethnic-themed programming on all 5 networks. (Oh, and Ugly Betty or Grey's Anatomy doesn't count).
Rumors on Smallville Season 10
by shutupfanboy
May 22nd, 2009
07:16:41 AM
The rumors I have heard on other boards is that Clark and Lois signed for season 10 when they signed season 9. Chloe only signed for season 9 and she is hinting in blogs this it for her. The guy playing Davis was supposed to be Zod, but in an interview he buried the writers about his characters' arc and Jimmy's death, so they are probably going to re-cast that. The suit was made for this season, but they decided not to use it. DC has given them permission to use other DC characters, but no Bruce Wayne in any form. Ollie and/or Martian Manhunter maybe get a spin-off whenever the show goes off the air. Lex may come back, because the actor's pilot did not get picked up, so he may come back. Thats all the rumors I have heard and with all rumors, grain of salt, people, grain of salt.

With Lois presumably ending up in the 31st century thanks to Clark's Legion ring, hopefully this means we'll get to see a few new Legionnaires besides Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad. Brainiac 5 would be a natural choice since Brainiac has already been introduced, but I'd really like to see Wildfire and Timber Wolf. [rhetorical-question]10 years of Smallville? Who'd have thunk it?[/rhetorical-question]

The network has to allow for the possibility of success. I think that is an act of mutual self-delusion between the buyers and sellers of television. But how can moving Smallville to Friday's be part of a bold ratings move?

For me, though, Southland should grab my attention on that night should I be around the tube.

Season 10, people. As has been stated, Welling signed for 2 more seasons! They moved it to Friday, because it's going to get the same audience no matter where it is.

SPOILERS for season 8 finale: I was actually pretty impressed with how they handled the Jimmy Olsen situation - suddenly fixing what many saw as a continuity error when the character was first introduced. Giving the camera to the younger brother. I just hope they can bring back Michael McKean as Perry White in the next season. But next year, no Davis, no Jimmy, no Lana - 75% less whiny angst! Keep up with the Justice League (complete with Watchtower) and you've got my viewership. I just wish we could have a Bruce Wayne, even without the batsuit. The Bruce/Clark relationship is too important to ignore, and no, Ollie's not a good enough substitute.

WTF? Smallville, love itor hate it has been their cash cow and after getting Welling to sigh for a 9th and possibly 10 year they move it to Friday?!? Just so they can put a new vamp show with teen angst to capitolize on Twilight... good times. And we lose Reaper an awesome show for a relaunch of Melrose Place? If Supernatural actually sticks to its 5 year plan and Smallville doesn't got for a rumored 10th maybe I can finally be done with this network once and for all.

By midseason. Especially after everyone realizes teen vampire dramas really suck. No pun intended of course. I still watch Smallville, I just hope they focus more on Lois and Clark and Clark becoming Superman. As far as continuity goes, continuity hasn't mattered in comic books since the mid 80's, so why should it matter on this show. If the ratings were not what they wanted, then that was their fault and certainly not a reflection of the quality of the show itself. Instead of cancelling what is un-arguably one of their best, and most original, series ever, they should figure out how to place the show to find its audience. F*ck CW for this move, and for trying to jump on somebody else's bandwagon (HBO's "True Blood")instead. You will fail CW.

Not a big surprise it was canceled. Ratings weren't much greater than other CW series, but it looked more expensive and was too much of a guy thing. Regardless, fuck them anyway.

Despite the dismal action in the finale, it was a good story. The move to friday is suprising, but doesn't necessarily mean the death of the show. Rumor has it, it's going for 10 seasons. I suspect Smallville will dominate friday's ratings with no more BSG on sci-fi, it was a strategic move to garner fans of the genre. I'm glad the Lana angst is over, but I miss Lex, even though the new actors have done a fine job.

Thursday was the night for the dudes, honestly. Reaper was basically a lead-in. As far as Privileged, I am actually shocked...it had the look of the rest of those vapid shows, but it was on par with Popular as being clever and sarcastic.
10 season...

Just because the actors have signed on for a 10th season, it doesn't mean that season will be shot. If a show is cancelled, it's gone. That's part of any actor contract.

The final season of Supernatural shall be epic... Each season has managed to up the ante, can't wait for the next (and final) one to start. Hell, maybe I'll throw on the best episodes throughout the summer drought. If you aren't watching this show get your head out of the sand and enjoy one of the best genre shows currently going.

Someone asked why Friday's are considered the death slot for TV .. It's because people go to the movies on Fridays, or they go out .. they don't stay in and watch TV. Same reason why the white house dumps unpleasant news on Fridays.

As for Smallville on Fridays, maybe CW has some data that says most SV viewers have DVRs so it wouldn't matter if they aired it on Sunday mornings at 3 am. Who knows?

I actually wanted to see the 80s show :(
