Let's just hope that if Sam's character does not speak in an Australian accent that he has learned how to whisper without slipping back into his native tongue. Dude kept bringing me out of "Terminator Salvation" last night all because he could never whisper without dropping his fake accent. Kind of annoying that with the $200 million spent on the film, that they didn't get a voice coach to help him with that or at least loop the damn whispering in post.

What's jarring is that this "machine" - or as I prefer to call him "character" - speaks in American English through 97% of the film except for the scenes where he starts to whisper. It's really no different than dropping a boom mic into the frame, or revealing the opperator's hand inside a puppet's ass. Totally shatters the suspension of disbelief, which is important when making a film about giant deadly robots.

The moment in Phantom Menace when Qui Gon gets down and meditates while Darth Maul paces back and forth and stares at him? To me that's the ONLY moment in the entire prequel trilogy that felt like Star Wars. I also hold TPM above the other two prequels because it was shot on film and is really beautiful in places.

Yeah, I actually remember it far more than either of the other two. Apart from the climax I can't remember a think about Revenge of the Sith, and the only bit I remember from Attack of the Clones is the gladiatorial arena thing with all those crazy beasties. I remember the three light sabers battle thing being cool in TPM, and the pod-race thing was alright. The downside of course is Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd.

Now that I think about it 10 years later, I love The Phantom Menace. I was never able to experience the theater releases of the original trilogy...so for me TPM was my Star Wars of '77. I camped out for a week, bought as much tie-in merchandise as possible and made a movie-going memory that I will brag about forever. The biggest thing to remember is how excited I was after I walked out of the theater at 3am. Elation, euphoria, and an instant desire to go see it again. Geeks, critics, and film cynics be damned, TPM the movie and the experience will alwas go hand in hand as nothing more than pure bliss. So what if Jar Jar is annoying, and Jake Lloyd can't act. Maul, pod racing, and bad ass Jedi's are still better than any shit on screen today.

But but but folks, almost anything in the god damned film universe is better than attack of the clones and revenge of the sith so its hardly huge praise to call Phantom the best of the prequels. thats like saying your first trip to the dentist was more bearable than your 2nd and 3rd.or for the older generation thats like saying your first trip to the prostate clinic was better than your 2nd and 3rd. The phantom menace is still at best a 2 out of 5 movie. i remember seeing it for the 1st time like it was yesterday and the dissapointment was huge and i remember only being excited by the 3 way lightsaber duel at the end, which is still the best duel of the entire trilogy, but one duel makes not a great movie, unless you count Spielbergs 1971 Duel.

So the wooden acting, super dull pace, bad script, the single most juvenile and annoying character Lucas could come up with, and one of the all time worst child actor performances=a good fantasy film...Oh well to each their own.
