Have you seen either of the miniseries or any of the series episodes? Have you read any of the novels? Or that short-lived comic back in the '80s? If so, I would welcome your thoughts.

I'm still not sold on Morena. Unless they're going a different direction with her character from the original (which the name change could indicate), I can't see her pulling it off. Everything I've seen her in she's had a vulnerability to her character, and I can't remember ever seeing that with Diana.

Would be far more likely to establish a revolution to the imposed world order. The V story is an allegory of the slow-boil rise of Nazi-ism: the Nationalist Socialist party. When was the last time you met a Republican socialist from the workers party?

Had you studied either political history OR your television history you would know better than your assertions indicate.

is that Hitler actually devised the name of his part specifically to be a catch-all. Think about it: National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), that's a name that has something for anyone, or at least that was the intent. National = right, Socialist = left, German = right, Workers' = left. It was one more way of making the ideology vague so that more and more ordinary German citizens who were disgusted with the other parties could fill in the blanks with their own hopes and desires. But that was Hitler's style: he constantly made contradictory promises to various interests - whatever got him support from a given group, he'd say it. In the end, though the nationalist and expansionist element would appear to put the Nazis at least in orbit of the right, the fact is that there was no set ideology: Nazism was whatever Hitler said it was on any given day.

...TV series sucked. The TV movies were really good for the time. It actually had a point to it, the Aliens were like Nazi's and this time America was occupied.

Then they did the TV show, it was a weekly suck fest. I hope this time it is far better.

I really have to ammend my earlier statement. The Republican Party itself is Evil, but there are Republicans in it who are not. Its like saying that the Nazi Party itself was Evil, but there were people within the party who were not evil, and actually tried to kill Hitler, like Tom Cruise's character in Valkerie. So yes, I am comparing the Republican Party to the Nazis, and former V.P Dick Cheney to Hitler. George W. Bush was just following his orders.

Reagan was an enthusiastic supporter of funding El Salvador, despite the fact, that the military dictatorship's death squads were running around, decimating the populace. Troops, I might add, provided with American ammunition and trained at the School of the Americas. Look up El Mozote. The point is that the opening of the original miniseries has a dedication to resistance fighters everywhere, then follows that with a sympathetic depiction of a guerilla leader being filmed Mike Donovan and his associate Tony. Hence, while the rest is ant-Nazi allegory, the right wing and their hero, the morally dubious and overrated Ronald Reagan, get dissed.

We found out how hardcore Julie was at the end of it when she said they may have to sacrifice thounsands to save billions, after she faced down Diana's fighter with a pistol. I'm a little iffy about this being a weekly thing, though. I was a kid when the original weekly series was on and even I thought it was crap.

Colonel Count von Stauffenberg was not and never had been a member of the Nazi Party; he was instead a scion of ancient German Catholic nobility and a proud Army family. There were a number of members of the Nazi Party in the Resistance, this is true, but Stauffenberg was not among them. Though I REALLY do not want to get too deeply entrenched in a political debate, I have to honestly ask if the only Republicans who appear NOT to be evil in your eyes are those who oppose their party. If so, then I suppose I must be evil in your eyes, for I would not have become a Republican if I did not agree with its ideals. I do so because, like all of you here who selected a party or ideology that works for you, I made an informed decision to do so, because I thought (and still think) that its ideals make the most sense to me. I do not for a moment ask for anyone here who thinks differently to feel ashamed of their own beliefs, and in fairness, no one should expect me to be ashamed of mine. But at least I won't be harvesting you for food and taking the water back to Sirius. :P Which brings me to the topic at hand: I am glad you liked the miniseries, and agree with you that the TV series marked the franchise's sudden and steep decline. Have you seen the DVD of the original miniseries? If not, I know you would like hearing miniseries creator Kenneth Johnson's commentary track; I am sure you would find it both informative and enjoyable. But don't take my word for it, as I'm sure there are many here who would tell you the same thing.
All of you are wrong.

Both the left and right have both authoritarian extremes (as well as anarchist kooks). The left has the ideology of communism, the right has the ideology of fascism. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are anywhere close to being either of these things. I don't like the Republican Party, and think Bush was terrible, but this same party also gave us Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Lincoln. And using huge deficits to cure an economic downturn doesn't make you a socialist, his support for Bush's bail-outs prove Obama is trying to save corporate America. No Republican seemed to mind big deficits when it was being used to prop up the defense industry in the 1980s, finance a tax cut, or rebuild Iraq. The Democrats and Republicans are more alike than different.

I disagree with your boiling-down of both the Democratic and Republican parties. The left has the ideology of socialism (often confused with communism) and the right has the ideology of capitalism. That the Republicans were in power on 9/11 is the reason the facism tag is so often put on the right. I have no doubt that were Gore the president during this time, the Republicans would have been protesting his version of the Patiot Act, or criticizing the Gore Administration's handling of coerced interrogation as "torture", even though it isn't as bad as anything you'll find on the campus of any american university during Rush Week.

US politics is funny (except when it spills over into foreign policy and affects the rest of us).

You basically only have 2 political parties. That's weird.

Then you are suprised that these 45% catch-alls contain a wide range of very different core ideologies.

Authoritarians? Check - religious right and politically correct zealots

individualists - right wing libertarians and left wing anarchists

Socially-conscious activists? check - plenty of people, religious and non-religious, left and right, give of their time and resources to help their fellow humans

Oligarchs? check - Ultra-capitalist Corporatists and semi-communist Unionists.

You want socialism? Go to Cuba, or Korea. They're nasty. Or maybe try Sweden and Norway. Very pleasant.

You want an end to big government? Try Somalia. They haven't got one at all, or some places in Pakistan or Mongolia. You can live your entire life and not see a government official.

Political dynasties and corruption? Check. Both sides

People who've come from poverty to greatness? Check. Both sides.

You want "moral values" at the core of government? Try Saudi Arabia or Nigeria or the Philippines

You want freer markets and purer forms of capitalism? Go to Egypt, and you can spend all day every day haggling ad nauseam for whatever you want. No fixed prices. Or Venezuela, where anti-competitive monopolies/cartels are being dealt with head-on. Or all those places where restrictive copyright and intellectual property laws and minimum humane working conditions imposed by governments are ignored.

almost as if the left-right dichotomy you all keep banging on about, is a convenience at best, is in constant evolution (or intelligent redesign) and is really, really specific to US culture and history (and I wouldn't dare say it mainly boils down to what people deem as acceptable level of taxation).

Whining about Hollywood politics is about as meaningful as complaining that your dog has bad breath and farts occasionally.

Will I check this out? Sure, what the heck. I can Tivo it and on a Saturday night with some pizza and beer maybe kick back and watch it as I catch up on some things. The lifelong geek in me usually checks out assorted sci-fi, fantasy, horror stuff for the fun of it. And I'm old enough to remember the original, so there's a part of me that will watch it and say "Okay, let's see what they changed."

But am I EXCITED about it? Not really. I mean, as I just said, I can sit back and watch it, in order to see what they changed. But I predict this will just fall under the banner of my saying "WHY DO I CARE?" Seriously, a bunch of you are debating politics and all -- but even if you wanted to do a show with that kind of statement or background, then why not just create a NEW sci-fi show that allowed you to tackle those themes?

And that's the bottom line for me -- was the world REALLY demanding a new version of a failed TV show from the early Eighties? If you were going to do a TV show about a freakin' alien invasion...and the effect it has on the Earth and people, at which point you do story arcs about them...what, you're telling me Hollywood is SO creatively bankrupt that it had to resurrect V as opposed to creating something new? That could have added to the genre?

So, sure, I'll probably check it out, but my enthusiasm meter isn't exactly off the scale for this one. Just seems like Hollywood being lazy yet again, and that strikes me as sad since -- speaking as a writer myself -- I just have to believe there's probably some pretty kick-ass or rock solid "alien invasion" scripts just sitting and languishing in Hollywood, and yet rather that give something NEW a change, these dopes decided to serve up yet another retread.

...because the decision in the past election wasn't between a Democrat and a Republican; it was between survival and destruction. If America had elected McCain/Palin, then we would have been on an expressway to Hell. The financial apocolypse would have continued, the Recession woulf have turned into a Depression, and the government wouldn't do a damn thing, eventually leading to anarchy.

Therefore, I do believe there are good Republicans, like there were good guys who were part of the German army who opposed what the Nazi's were doing. Wasn't the current Pope a member of the German army? However, the Republican Party itself doesn't give a damn about us, they only care about following a narrow, rigid ideology that if followed would lead to the destruction of America.

If Rightwing policies were followed, then America would turn into another Mexico. A very small percentage, like 1%-2%, would own everything, then you would have a small professional class of maybe 3%-4%, and the other 95%-96% would be the working/non-working poor. Cutting taxes and less government always leads to this. Throughout history this has been the norm. It was only in the 20th century in America when the government started to intervene in the economy that we had a "middle class". It took a while, but I think the majority of Americans have finally seen the light, and they realize that less government means less help, and most of us need help, unless you are one of those delusional rightwingers who think they can take care of themselves without any government help, untlil some kind of disaster comes along and they are the first in line to cry for help from the GOVERNMENT that they were attacking just a few days earlier.

If you really want less government, then be prepared to accept the consequences.

But if the Visitors are raiding Earth for water when the outer solar system is full of useful ice moons (none of which have any pesky monkeys to shoot back), I don't think I can take it seriously. Yeah, I know, allegory, but the sci-fi foundations are dubious at best - and if they're going for the gritty realism, it makes that all the more obvious.

Did they miss the point?

I'll watch it when it comes out, and try and keep an open mind. After all, I watched the new BSG series at first for the express purpose of seeing what a trainwreck it would be, and ended up being rather pleasently surprised. (Although from the comments of others, I see there are those with no love for it. But I digress.) I do worry, though, that they seem to have missed the point. The two human leads are government agents? Part of the point of the original, to me, was oridnary people being thrust into extraordinary circumstances and doing what they feel is right. I mean, the leader of the resistance was a med-student. A female one, no less, back in the 80's when Riply from Alien was probably the only major example we'd had thus far of female bad-assery. If it in this new one is someone who worked for Homeland Security? Then really, I don't see that as someone oridinary rising to the extraordinary. I see that as someone doing their job. Sure, their job may have just gotten a lot more wierd and difficult, but they are still seeing to the security of their homeland. Also, pity they seem to have done away with John. I always liked the dynamic between John and Diana, where she obviously wanted the power but still had to "suffer" under his leadership. Created an interesting and tense dynamic amongst the Visitor leadership, something that was (one of the many things) lacking in the weekly series. Speaking of Dianna... Anna? Really? That desperate to make changes that the one character discribed that really could be seen as a direct allogory to one of the characters in the original, and they have to dick with the character's name? Really? Ah, well. Guess it is time to anticipate the broadcast of this with the same mantra I kept in my head prior to the new Star Trek. "Please don't suck. Please don't suck." While I will try my best to keep an open mind, I must say that I am decidedly less optimistic on this one. (Seems increaskingly doubtful, but I'd still love to see Kenneth Johnson get his own sequel made. If you haven't already, you should read the novel version. Quite a good read.)
I really hope it's good. The original mini-series was outstandi

Democrats/Republicans - they are both the problem. And while you idiots are fighting back and forth on which party has the biggest dick both parties are sinking this country into the ground. How about "we the people"? Instead of playing piss wars between two scumbag countries how about we team together and take back our country from an overspending, welfare state. OH! And "V" should be cool also!

Me and my mates were completly hooked on it. wouldn't miss an episode. We always saw it as a group. an di can't even beging to describe our complete disapointment and feeling of betrayal with the last episode.

There was a very moody theme played at the end credits of some second series episodes that very very cool, though.

I had always hoped for the big NBC crossover event where the A-Team, Michael Knight and Gary Coleman went up against the V aliens in an all-out battle to the death.
A few authors will make a little scratch penning V books again...
OK, V geek trivia S.P. Somtow wrote a V novel (for the money) called V: Alien Swordmaster - A few years later Somtow directed a hilarious straight to video schlock-horror dynamo called "The Laughing Dead" - It featured cameos from a bunch of sci-fi authors like Artur Byron Cover, Ed Bryant, Tim Powers, William F. Wu, comics great Len Wein and the legendary Forrest J. Ackerman both play corpses.
To appease certain Talbackers I suggest the new alien ruler in V be played by a fully nude CGI Ronald Reagan Zombie with Mark Singers voice and hair.

The reason that America was forced to endure 8 years of George W. Bush, and the near Financial Apocolypse of the World, were people like you who decided to vote for Ralph Nader instead of Al Gore back in 2000. Nader kept saying that there was no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. Alot of people, like you, agreed with him, and it is projected that Nader got about 3% of the vote. It was enough to get George W. Bush into office, EVEN THOUGH HE GOT FEWER VOTES THAN GORE!

How in the fuck can people out there keep saying that Democrats are the same as Republicans? Were you asleep for the last 8 fucking years? This is what happens when you elect a Republican President and Congress. A Democratic President, like Obama, will intervene in the economy when it starts to go to hell. A Republican President, like Bush, will do NOTHING and then lie about it by saying that "the fundamentals of the economy are strong." That is the motherfucking difference. A Democrat will take action right away. Republicans will wait until they are either forced to do something, or they are voted out of the office, AND the Democrats have to clean up their mess. Lets just keep the Democrats in charge.

If the Democrats were socialists, they'd be nationalizing corporations instead of loaning them money. Both parties support capitalism, just one wants to regulate it more than the other. Both parties are in favor of going into debt, just one wants to spend the money here in America, and the other wants to spend it in the Middle East.
