Now Stallone might not look like he could be a pro boxer anymore, but fuck, I could easily see him be leader of the Aryan Brotherhood in a prison flick. As much as I am not a huge Sly fan, I will say he does have the physique to play a bad ass.

Ok, each their own. I won't judge, but personally I prefer his earlier, less successful movies such as Nighthawks and F.I.S.T (and even Paradise Alley to a degree) over his bloated 80's action movies. Personal taste I guess.

IMO after First Blood he hadn't made any worthwhile project until Coplands. I'm hoping The Expendables will be more in the vein of Nighthawks and First Blood and less in the vein of Cobra and Rambo II and III.

As for Demolition Man, never really did anything for me (although I found Wesley more annoying than Sly). And while I admire what they tried to do with Copland, it was always a disappointment as a movie. But I do respect Sly for at least trying to act again, instead of just growling lines and glaring at the camera.

One that I particularly enjoyed was CLIFFHANGER, I know it's just DIE HARD on a mountain but I liked the whole dynamic with the baddie gang and Stallone battling both them and the elements.

Actually when I saw CLIFFHANGER in the cinema I swear to god it was a harder version than was released on video. The British baddie was making racist jibes at the black baddie and they had bad blood between them - im sure that was all cut from the home version.

Really, unless you're a fan of seeing torture porn in theaters, how has PG-13 resulted in better movies? Seems like R and PG have headed toward being wastelands, while filmmakers just push the limits rather than making good old-fashioned middle-of-the-road R and PG films.

Seems like no one's using R in genre films like they did with Die Hard, Predator, Aliens, Cobra, the old Rambo films...is Matrix the last good example?

That's one reason I'd like to see The Expendables rated R--it would most likely be a good example of old-school R rating, too gritty for PG but not sadistic like Inglourious, Saw, Hostel, etc.

They planned on shooting it in 1950 (as "We Are Expenable") starring Humphrey Bogart as the Stallone character, and co-starring John Garfield, Robert Ryan, Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Sterling Hayden, Woody Strode, Ida Lupino, Anthony Quinn and Audie Murphy. Orson Welles was slated to play the villain. That one was shelved thanks to HUAC and the Red Scare.

But the very first time they were going to shoot it was in 1941, starring James Cagney as Barney Ross, with Edward G. Robison as Mr. Church, and Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, George Raft, Jean Gabin, John Wayne, Ward Bond, and the villains were going to Conrad Veidt and Peter Lorre. Unfortunately, Pearl Harbor happened and that one was shelved too.
