I will give Wolverine one thing even if it was the Basterdization version of the greatest Marvel character of all time, Deadpoo, that fight scene on the tall Brazil dome thing was pretty awesome, even without the completed graphics.

I do think I've figured out why Fox movies all suck so much though. Tom Rothman HATES people. He's a snobby elitist that thinks the common person akin to a head of cattle. That's how he gears his movies and that's how they come out.

Speaking of a Deadpool movie I was in the comic shop the other day talking about it, the Guy thought that it could be possible but I don't. There isn't a great back story to Deadpool he just goes around doing shit for money. There could be a good TV show there but not a good movie. I'll just live with knowing that Burn Notice is the closest thing we will get to a Deadpool show.

It especially cracks me up when people are especially demanding of comic book adaptations needing motivation just because classical screenplay-structure tells you it has to be there. What fanboy has ever tore apart the latest hot issue because there was no amount of constant divulging of hows and whys? Why would an ongoing film series about those same characters be any different? I swear, the Fantastic Four movie was nothing but one long explanation after another for two hours to get modern audiences to buy that heroes as goofy as that could actually exist in our world of today!

Seriously, even today when I pop in a film by one of the aforementioned directors and enjoy them so much more than anything currently down at the cineplex, and a big reason is because I don't have to be fed every piece of background and character thought; no matter how deftly those things CAN be handled, it's still always very apparent and distracting, not to mention tiresome. When I can quickly identify a common archetypal character right off the bat (Jodorowsky specifically bases his characters on the tarot personalities), it tells me everything I need to know subconsciously about that character, and actually makes me far more invested in them than if I have to be told or shown a bunch of random crap that attempts to make it all make sense. Stop wasting my time with all the latter, and let's just dive into the story, mood, and atmosphere shall we?

I saw the Deadpool ending. Camera pans down to a blade amidst the rubble. The blade gradually retracts into an arm. The arm starts moving and the hand begins groping around for something. Then, the hand happens upon ... Wilson's severed head where the mouth has now been sliced open.

If you saw the end to Freddy v. Jason, then you saw an ending almost identical to the Deadpool ending.

Look, I've got no problem debating the merits of a certain film with *anyone* on here, and you make some very good points, but come on dude. "They couldn't have executed any of it any more poorly?" You've seen SciFi Channel Original Films before, right?

Remember, this film wasn't made for us AT ALL. It was made for everyone else, everyone who doesn't read comics (though they threw in some bones to get casual comics fans in the seats, obviously, by including Gambit and others). You might be surprised how many "normal" folk actually enjoy X3 and will enjoy this as well.

But I didn't see Indy 4 same as I will not pay to see Wolverine. The reason? Because I saw the trailers for these movies, that's why. Yep. Trailers choc full of bad acting, horrible effects, lazy shots, shitty dialogue, and bad music.

I saw IJ4 about a month ago (for free) and man am I glad I didn't pay to see that shitburger. It was so bad, I've nearly repressed all memory of it (sealing it in a wooden crate and storing it away in a warehouse next to the Ark, and the memory of pissing my pants in the third grade).

How shitty does this Wolvie flick look? I've never thought that character would make for a good solo movie. His best tales were with the X-Men, and the only truly exceptional stories on his own were the Weapon X and James Howlett stories (neither of which feature the Wolverine that AUDIENCES were familiar with).

I mention "its not made for us" because most of your defenses of your argument initially revolved around how this is a terrible adaptation and a butchery of the Wolverine character. But then if its not made for us and they weren't really concerned with comic continuity, it renders your argument moot.

That said, it still sounds like its a failure on a cinematic level as well, but I'm confident there are many many ways it could have been worse.

I know you adhere to the belief that if the public stops seeing these bad movies, the studios will stop making them, but that's the problem- they'll stop making them *good*, and what's most important becomes the bottom dollar, and then we probably get cheaper looking films. They'll just look at a failure and think "needed more explosions!"

Don't misunderstand me, that's certainly NOT an argument against intelligently made movies. And I never said "The mainstream doesn't mind crap," but if you look at some of the top grossing films lately...

I saw Wolverine, I payed for it like Harry, however unlike Harry I was so invested in the character, and so desperate to see it that I begged a colleague to burn me a copy, I watched it and thought "Maybe the cinematic release would be better". Hopeing that they would remedy some of the laundry list of fanboy complaints regarding story, effects, score, character development, script, deadpool, gambit, and Wolverine himself.

I was wrong.

The only added benefit was the soundtrack the cinema provided that, despite trying to replicate with quality home theatre components, can't be matched. The additional effects work looked.. I'll put this nicely.. rushed and uneven.

This movie does not exist to me. Rewatch X1, and realise that this is the first and potentially last time you see the real Wolvie on screen, then watch X2 because its fucking badass.

Even a year ago, Wolverine's trailer did nothing to get me excited for this film. Will only see it if someone drags me to it.

I'm just glad that he was Paying attention. Good to see he's still heading in that Ebert direction of making the plot up in his head when he's decided he isn't going to like the movie.

Ebert wrote, "Why should I care about this guy? He feels no pain and nothing can kill him, so therefore he's essentially a story device for action sequences."

This is exactly what I think. This is why he comes across as silly, bloated, and paper thin. Especially when compared to "Iron Man" or "The Dark Knight." It's laughable how utterly wrong the film got it.

Wolverine could've become a wonderfully complex, embittered, conflicted, asskicking hero people enjoyed talking about, but Fox played it safe, ordering blandness instead of blood and sweat and pounding pulses. The audience for this film isn't adults, it's twittering, sugar-slurping thirteen year olds.

It's sad, really. After "Iron Man," "The Dark Knight," and "The Hulk" soared to such huge critical AND box office success, Fox still doesn't get it. By "it," I mean realizing that studios CAN make well-written, well-directed superhero film without pussing out.

I actually DO want to go see Wolverine (and probably will tonight after enjoying "Free Comic Book Day" at the local comic shop and getting some free sketches from industry artists), but I fully expect to dislike it. Why does Wolverine have to walk away from ANOTHER explosion without flinching? Is he really flying toward a helicopter?"), but all this controversy has made me very interested in seeing it. Probably. But I don't download films illegally, and I really cherish the theater-going shared-experience with others. Still bullshit. Just because you've got a character shooting fireballs does not mean you CAN'T continue what you started in the previous film- namely that the Phoenix is a fiery personality. And yes, they DID call her Phoenix in the film, which only applied to the idea of coming back from the dead. All I ask for is consistency. Show some fire in her eyes, give the fans something to work with (instead of shitting on them), and have her flame up into the Phoenix shape once- at the end- when she dies.

Look, sometimes I enjoy parts of X3 (Frasier as Beast, the Akira-like ending with shit flying everywhere), but when I think of it as a whole, it just infuriates me. That said, I have a bigtime X-Men comic book fan who enjoys X3 the most out of the trilogy bc it reminds him most of what it was like as a kid, growing up with X-Men.

I agree that Magneto might be repulsed by her and have no use for her as a human, but that is NOT how they set up the relationship between the two. They were more than just comrades in idea and execution, more than just soldiers sharing a plan. They were setup as potential lovers, deeply caring friends. Hell, Mystique saved Magneto by jumping in front of the cure-dart, and THAT is how he shows his gratitude? Its bullshit. A better way to show Magneto is the bad guy (without betraying the character) would be to have Magneto get pissed and KILL the soldier that shot her. That would have kept Mags a villain but also preserved the character as he had been developed in the past 2 films. Instead they used it as a lame plot device to ensure the government knows where Magneto's troops are hiding later in the movie.

Yet, I'm more excited about movies like Drag Me To Hell and The Brothers Bloom than most of this stuff. Because you know those films are gonna come and go real fast, whereas the others are gonna be around for awhile.

Hopefully this pig flu shit will go away and we'll see people packing theaters. For the blockbusters and the little films. Because man, it would sure be something to see some "small" films make big bucks and therefore prompt studios to make more of 'em. Of course I'm all hopped on pills right now, so I'm pretty sure that's just wishful thinking.

X2? Pretty good opening Nightcrawler scene (that ends with...a dagger...wtf?). And there's the soldiers infiltrating the mansion scene, which shows off killing Wolverine killing soldiers albiet in terribly staged action (a Singer trademark). And another Wolvie fight at the end which ends with him defeating his enemy...with a hose. What else is there to this movie that makes people love it? Honestly. Magneto preens like a ladyboy. Cyclops disappears for most of the movie. There's a terrible airplane chase where as long as you don't physically touch a tornado with your plane, you'll be fine. Which ends with Magneto magically appearing to save the X-plane. But there's the awesome climax where the X-Men...don't do much against uninteresting normal soldiers. And Jean inexplicably sacrifices herself and Logan cries like a baby and then puts on a really gay shirt. Really? This is the movie you all love?

X3 isn't any better. And it's certainly not any worse. Its plot is as thin as the first 2 X-Men movies. And the team sits around doing nothing for a large part of the movie. They don't even have an interesting debate on the cure. Super, fucking, hot Storm argues that mutants should accept their "gifts"...so insensitive to the blue furball standing next to her and the poor girl that can't touch anyone. Sweet move, Storm. Good leadership. However, at least there's some good action. The showdown in the Grey house is pretty well done, with Juggernaut tossing Wolverine around. I don't mind the bridge sequence. Magneto is showing off. It's what he does. The final showdown is pretty large with a lot of mutant/mutant action. Colossus finally shows up for more than a second. Flaming, flying cars? Pretty cool. Wolverine facing down Dark Phoenix is pretty good. His killing her fits their "arc" (if you can call it that) from the first 2 movies. Phoenix herself could have been fit better into the story (or should have been its focus...maybe one of her rampages is the impetus for the cure being developed?). However, try to create the Dark Phoenix story without the cosmic elements....they did a decent job of this.

Wolverine? First half is okay. But like most action movies these days, none of it has any gravity and the main character is rather dull. Wolverine is just not interesting on his own. They're too scared to dirty up their franchise character. He should have innocent blood on his hands. We don't get to see the consequences of his raging out, and therefore why he feels compelled to control himself. Yeah, he kills his real father in a moment of rage, but this is largely forgetten and not touched upon again. Liev is alright as Sabretooth, but again, they restrain him too much. If he's the opposite of Logan, let's see him let his rage out. He's way too controlled in the film. And then it becomes a calvacade of unnecessary cameos. I'm not sure why they felt compelled to make solo character movie larger than the team movies...just confusing to me. But it's not really much worse than the other X-Men movies. They all feel rushed and incomplete storywise with little intersting character development.

Harry, man, what did you expect??? A 3-hour "Once upon a time in Canada" Wolverine?? You've given top ratings to far, far worse shit than this film. I'm a big comic book fan, read Wolverine for 12 years straight, and I thought it really wasn't that bad.

Some action scenes are very cool, while some computer effects are disappointing. But given everything that happens in this flick (including the heat that this picture is taking), I find it easier to forgive. I really dug Deadpool and Gambit, with how their powers were depicted. And Hugh Jackman was nothing less than solid.

For the climax, I would have preferred a more subtle approach. Yet, at the same time, I like the unpredictability of NO character being sacred (though I was never a huge X-men comic book fan).

I guess it just fits with how i grew up with the character. I remember the Alpha Flight story where Heather Hudson sees Wolverine un-sheath his claws for the first time and he reacts in horror as well, and i remember the art in Days of Future Past where they specifically show a sheath-unit to hold his claws after his skin is blasted off.

Wolverine was a mutant that had the power to heal fast and had heightened senses. No one knows what he did before he lost his memory (he may have fought in WWII), but he definitely wasn't intended to have been over 150 years old.

Because of his mutant powers, he was abducted by unknown people and used a process to graft adamantium on his bones and give him claws. The process was so painful that he lost his memory.

Wolverine escaped and lived in the Northern Woods as a feral man until found by Heather ad Mac Hudson who brought him back to civilization.

Wolverine was trained by the Canadian Government to be an agent and a spy, and as part of his training to get his animal nature under control they sent him to Japan to learn bushido and self-discipline.

Because of his short size, ferocious nature and his claws, Department H gives him the code name Wolverine. He is also called Weapon X.

Wolverine left Department H and joined the X-Men.

That pretty much was what they hinted his origin was going to be up until the 90s, I believe.

Of course, in the early 70s they also were thinking of making him an actual Wolverine who had become evolved. So things could always have been worse.

What Ratner did with X3 was make a decent, if ultimately unremarkable, third part of a trilogy, kind of along the lines of RETURN OF THE JEDI, minus the Ewoks, Boba Fett being killed off in fifteen seconds and "Jub-Jub!" If you wanna hate on somebody, hate on Singer for a) not making what, according to some of you, would have been the greatest comic book movie of all time with HIS X3 and b) not doing so in favor of making SUPERMAN RETURNS, which, in my humble opinion, did a hell of a lot more damage to the Superman franchise than Ratner's X3 could have ever dreamt of doing to the X-Men. Here's a second clue: they just made another X-MEN flick, they STILL haven't made another SUPERMAN flick. Hell, they'll probably have to wait for ten more years for everybody to forget about the bastard Superkid, pre-teen Lois Lane or Superman getting prison-shanked by Lex Luthor.

Also, I've always wondered why the hell they didn't do the obvious thing and cast Parker Posey, who actually somewhat resembled, was the same age as and could reasonably pull off a facsimile of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE-era Margot Kidder as Lois Lane? If you're trying to emulate the first film, at least do it intelligently.

IMHO a large portion of the female audience who are Jackman fans -- ladies from teens and up -- are going to see this.

Here's how it seems to be playing out: young ladies/young women are going with groups of friends while the moms are doing "girls night out" or they are taking their kids as an excuse.

PREDICTION: WOLVERINE will be a surprise hit.

SPIDER-MAN 3, however, is pretty much the movie most of the guys on this board are claiming X3 is: a cinematic abortion. Probably the worst part about it is the fact that it proved Topher Grace would have made a much better Peter Parker/Spider-Man than Maguire, but where to start? Venom being entirely unnecessary, three movies worth of exposition crammed into one, the cop-out "black Spider-Man suit", the Sandman being Uncle Ben's murderer (which, in turn, makes Spider-Man a murderer, since he greased the now-innocent guy he thought killed his uncle in the first one), James Franco as "the extreme snowboarder who makes us appreciate the faithful rendition of Green Goblin in the first movie" ... the list goes on. Instead of making SPIDER-MAN 4, Raimi should use the budget to buy back all existing copies of SPIDER-MAN 3, burn them, destroy the negatives and pretend it ended with 2.

Wolverine has been hammered in the reviews and almost all say it is average to very poor. Wolverine will also soon run out of the gullible who haven't yet heard the word of mouth and just wanted to see the Newest Movie at the weekend.

It's pretty good, but not great. B+ I'd say. Better than X3, and about even with X1 for quality. Not as good as X2, and had some stupid VFX shots, but it's a good comic book movie. Not sure what people are so mad about....

Gambit comes helicoptering down between Wolverine and Victor.

Gambit: "Mind if I... STICK around?" *slams power stick into the ground creating an earthquake that knocks down the two brothers*

Ext. 3 Mile Island Rubble- DAY
Kayla lays dying in Logan's arms.

Kayla: "I'm so cold."

Wolverine: "That's because you're not wearing any clothes." *Wolverine uses his claws to rip Kayla's shirt off one last time*
(see what we did there? Bringing back the same line of dialogue that Grandpa Ben used on Logan in the barn?)

Int. Grocery Store- Day
Wolverine is in a small grocery store, buying food for himself.

Grocery Clerk: "Paper or plastic?"

Logan (carrying food away in his arms): "I prefer metal."

Wolverine also pays for the food with a credit card that has ONE name on it: LOGAN. Also, his credit card number is made of the numbers from LOST: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

PLOT Cyclops and Wolverine work together to save the children from Alkali Lake, Wolverine guiding Cyclops by the hand at times, at others, barking orders to "Turn left! Fire! Straight up! Now behind you!" shooting soldiers left and right.

In the end, its such a traumatic experience for them both, that when Professor X shows up, he erases Cyclops' and Wolverine's memories so that they won't remember each other.

And Professor X will just pretend he has no idea who Wolverine is or where he came from when he sees him 20 years later.

When Wolverine confronts Victor after learning Kayla is still alive, he has him by the throat, ready to kill. But Victor starts crying, pleading with Logan not to kill him. Tears streaming out of his eyes, he claims it was all Stryker's idea, that if Victor didn't do it, Stryker would kill all the mutant children in the cells. Logan believes him and releases Victor. Victor then continues the fight, slapping Wolverine around in a full 360.

Immediately after Victor gets off 3 Mile Island, he bumps into a plastic-faced Magneto who says "You could be useful someday in the future. Here's my card."

Logan got his more famous name because he raises wolverines in his spare time, in a pen behind his cabin.

Kayla and Logan have a sexy disco dance sequence around their log cabin set to the BeeGees "Stayin' Alive".

Also, all the fight scenes are shot in extreme closeup.

And every fight scene is punctuated by a crash of crazy nu-metal music to tell you just how HARDCORE! this film really is.

Not quite 'Catwoman' bollocks, but not far off! 'Ghost Rider' bollocks, let's say. Or 'Elektra' - that level of bollocks.

I think the stuff I thought up would make a far worse film, and I would not want to see a Wolverine movie that was that self-aware. Logan raising wolverines in the back is far too much on the nose (more so than the fairy tale Silverfox tells him) for me. I think I'd spend most of the film rolling my eyes (though a movie that did embrace that level of ridiculousness might be very enjoyable).

And actually, if what I wrote was what was actually in the movie, and you asked "How could it have been worse?!" I would not have added the "A wise old man giving him a speech..." bit.

I would have said Logan got drunk one day in a college town in Michigan with a bunch of football players, and he woke up the next day to find a Wolverine tattoo on his chest.

Like I said, I thought the first half was solid. The second half is full of laughable moments. Adamantium bullets being one. Cyclops automatically running after seeing Victor in the window is another.

Its not his fault if the onscreen version of Wolverine never approaches the Eastwood-esque man with no name in this film if a. the director never directed him that way and b. the character wasn't set up as such in previous films.

That said, a better director *could* take the character in such a direction for a sequel set in Japan.

... Then when they cut to a level shot on the ground of the tree falling, its a completely different tree, different shape at the top, maybe a completely different species. That took me out.

What a focus-group-written, non-canonical piece of monkey turd. Casting was about the only decent part of this waste of brain cells. The only reason Fox keeps squirtin' out X-Men, Fantastic Four (Oh yeah--they're rebooting this too), and Spider Man every few years, is because if they don't the IP rights revert back to Marvel. WHO WOULD PROMPTLY DISAVOW ANY PRIOR MOVIES AND PROPERLY REBOOT THE FRANCHISE. Iron Man style. "Good", I mean.

BUT, I can not blame you. Not one bit. Because I fucking hate a lot of the Harry Potter films (especially the last one) for the disrespect they show to the source material (when I *know* they could make it work and 1. be a better film and 2. be a better adaptation at the same time).

Sabretooth should be an insane killer, and I agree that you did not get that to the degree he should have been, but turning him into the comic version would have been a mistake as well because while that works in the forum of comics, movies have to appeal to a broader audience that wants a more 'realistic' been. Yes ironic when considering it is a comic book adaptation, but still.

Now all that being said, the scripting and plotting were awful. I thought Jackman and Shreiber did a good job with what they were given, but they had little to work with.
