and overlooked actors, and it sounds like a lovely film. But a hitman with a conscience? Couldn't he have any other profession..any?
Gentleman Was Awful

I saw Merry Gentleman at Sundance last year. Its a boring, preening piece of crap that had the majority of the audience squirming in their seats. Sure, it's a character study -- but who cares about these worthless characters?

i gather you're no fan of hal hartley, then, or at least his early work. but _judy berlin_, with such marvelous performances by edie falco and madeline kahn (her last)? _love and death on long island_? not exactly coming-of-age stories, i guess, but plenty of growing up done out there in suffolk county. unless it's nassau. county.

more art film reviews, every week? why, yes, please -- it's like you read my mind...

Frankly, I didn't like Sita. That is, for the first 25 minutes I loved. Then I realized that every single scene is the same. The tedium starts to build and the use of Hanshaw's fantastic music just becomes boring (which is perhaps the biggest crime of the film). Maybe if it had focused more on the actual story or employed a little variety in the song scenes it would have been a good film. I watched this as part of the Critics' Jury on Natfilm 2008 in Copenhagen. We almost uniformly hated this film. We ended up giving the award to Let the Right One In.
Sita Sings The Blues is THE SHIT!!!!

Found clips of it online and fell in love immediately. Wonderful concept, wonderfully executed. Funny and poignant and with fantastic music. It breaks my heart to hear that the masters of her recordings have been destroyed. How crappy is that. I hope Sita wins an Oscar, it richly deserves to.
