Fisher King is a masterpiece. Holy Grail is now a classic. Time Bandits was clever and fun. Twelve Monkeys was compelling but compromised by both Brad Pitts and Bruce Willis' very limited acting skills. But the sums of Brazil and Munchausen were a pale shadow of each of their respective parts; While Fear & Loathing and Brothers Grimm were both wretched messes. Do you see a pattern here? I can only hope that Imaginarium will be worth the trouble. BTW - WAKE UP and quit worshipping mediocrity!

I know what you mean. I was on a film for a first-time director and having just watched it myself made some sort of exclamation when I saw it on his desk. Shooting started on Monday and he was feeling the stress. When he asked me if it was good, I said yes. When he asked me if he should watch it before starting the movie, I said under no circumstances, absolutely not.

Finally a Gilliam film that seems like a fully satisfying cinematic experience. Apparently Kermode was told by Gilliam himself that he is very happy with the film, someone who is known to be quite self-critical. Judging by the Cannes line up and considering Avatar and Shutter Island are also coming out, 2009 could well turn out to be a great year in cinema. 2008 was very poor

Also, let me scream/beg Johnny Depp to please play the Riddler in the next Batman movie. If his agent called WB to talk about it, then it would be a done deal. They would fucking write the script especially for Depp. They would film scenes around his schedule. Whatever he wanted. The Riddler and Catwoman, and I hope Brett Ratner directs it.

See?

It doesn't decribe Terry Gilliam in the slightest.

Whether you get his films or not, I'm sure that if you knew what that word meant, and have watched TG's films, I'm sure that you'd agree that 'mediocre' is not a fitting descriptor.

by AsimovLives
May 1st, 2009

That movie is not for sissies. It's a though movie. And all those people who think themselves oh so moral or very sensitives, they better not watch it or they will bleed from their asses and vomit their eyeballs through their nostrils. It's a though movie to watch, the thoughest movie Gilliam ever made. It's harsh, it's unforgiven, and it's a big fuck you to anybody who doesn't get it and can't stant it. It's one of those movies that doesn't give a fuck what the audiecne might think of it, and doesn't give a shit about pools and target audiences and all that crap that been causing the progressive dumbification of modern american cinema. And for all that, Tideland is great. Truly a movie with balls, and big ones, balls of brass. My admiration for the movie and for Gilliam to have made it knowns no end. The man still has it, and has it good. Gilliam is a true filmmaker, and like very few are.
