I just watched this after renting it from blockbuster (I'm not paying 20 bucks for something I'm going to have to buy again anyway)and its pretty strong. It's pretty focused on Caprica (obviously)and doesn't answer the questions mentioned above but it has a good story and some really strong acting. My only complaint is that the ending is pretty non-climactic but it does give an idea of where things will be going in the series. Definitely worth watching, especially for BSG fans!

"If tomorrow we all had to flee Earth and set up shop on 12 other Earthlike worlds a galaxy away, how likely is it that none of us would remember to write down somewhere where Earth is," The series never said the colonies knew where the Cylons were going. You're making an assumption. "or that the lost 13th colony was comprised entirely of damn dirty robots?" Who says they were robots? They may have been skinjobs who only created Robots when they landed on Cylon-Earth. Again, you're making an assumption. "Maybe Jane Espenson and her 'Caprica' writing staff will come up with a cool story about some archaeologist who discovers there were Cylons on Scorpeon or Libron 2,000 years ago? But they’re not there in Bill Adama’s era due to their inability to reproduce?" There were NEVER any Cylons on the 12 Colonies until Daniel Graystone made them. There were Cylons on KOBOL, but they were expelled and wound up on Earth.

I loved it. It could actually stand on it's own as a tragedy type thing. Possibly better that the Galactica pilot (miniseries). There were scenes in the script that were not in the final cut, but in the end it made more sense without them.

Uh, no, Herc. That would not only not be cool, it would also be stupid. By definition, there weren't any humanoid Cylons anywhere near the 12 colonies until the Final Five showed up.

And as for the whole "forgetting" issue... we, as Earthlings, don't know shit about what happened 2000 years ago in most of the world; a lot of what modern history books tell us is based on conjecture that relies on actually very little solid evidence. In the case of ancient Europe, most of it relies on written texts that we don't have the originals of and were probably biased as hell anyway.
The Colonials have similar records of their past, like the Prophecies (or whatever they're called) of Pythia. Sure, it's a religious text, but if the Colonials lost everything else over time, it may be all they have. Much of what informs our view of the early ancient Hebrews comes from the Old Testament. That's not to say there aren't any other sources of information, including archaeology and some other written texts, for the Colonials, especially considering they were at least a little more technologically advanced than we are at the moment, but it's not at all unlikely that one or several highly symbolic religious texts supplanted sources that were closer to the truth. The CAPRICA pilot supports this, in that it shows a society that, while relatively tolerant, still shows signs of religious dominance over some aspects of everyday life; really more like 19th century Europe than 21st century Europe/U.S.

I didn't look forward to it, but was pleasantly surprised. In fact, I would say it's more consistently strong that the BSG mini-series (which, for me, anyway, didn't start to emotionally pull me in until halfway through). It has mostly strong acting (not sure about Zoe, and very not sure about the suicide-bomber, but the adult actors were great and Lacy was very good). Some of the special effects, especially establishing shots, were pretty bad, but others were superb (the computer-paper for instance). The characters are either complex or at least show promise, and the same can be said of the plot. The story's relation to real-world problems is more akin to the whole New Caprica/Iraq thing than anything else in BSG, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing; it depends on how heavy-handed it will eventually become.

I wasn't bothered by the technology level in CAPRICA at all. The reason we never see a house-keeping robot on any of the spaceships in BSG is obvious (no time for any refugees to take one with them, and if any were in the fleet, they would have immediately been stripped for parts), and the same applies to the holobands. The lack of computer-paper is more difficult to explain away, though; maybe they need a lot of power?

The Paley Festival is turning into a popularity sell-out. Jesus. I thought these panels were reserved for critically acclaimed shows, shows that had HUGE cult followings, and such. Now there's a panel for a show that ran its pilot straight to DVD instead of airing it on the network the show is going to be on? Personally, "Caprica" was okay enough, but it didn't blow my mind, except for a few shots of the skele-Cylon.

The reason we don't see holobands, computer paper and butler droids is in Battlestar is because all that stuff was done away with after the Cylon uprising. Cylons could hack it.

It's reasonable that the fancier technology wasn't used during the first Cylon war, but as RipperGiles notes, years of peace let the Colonials grow complacent. I'm sure warships were the absolute last thing to get an easily-hackable upgrade, and entertainment devices presumably the first.
That said, even if the technology existed, there is no reason we would absolutely *have* to have seen it on BSG; most of the action took place on a military ship with a) military personnel and b) really poor refugees. It's conceivable a few high-tech devices were in use somewhere in the fleet, and we just didn't witness it. And seeing as towards the end, even toothpaste became rare...

As for the 300MB thing, yeah, that struck me as weird, too. I believe RDM has admitted to poor research in this regard and that it will be fixed in the television version. Which makes me hope that the CAPRICA season 1 sets will contain it (and not just the repackaged unrated pilot), because I'm an insane completist.

How the hell did they recreate her without scanning her first? Even if, as Zoe suggested, they applied all the known info about her from medical-reports/dna/shopping lists/etc, without actually scanning her brain, there should not be enough info to reconstruct her personality and everything like that. Also can someone clarify the ending for me a bit? If Zoe is still completley in-tact inside that prototype-cylon, then why would she perform perfectly at that weapons demonstration? She's not a marksman, so she shouldn't have the knowledge to use firearms like that, and more importantly, I don't get why she'd play along with her fathers project if she's so anti-violence and everything. And if she did get partially deleted and the cyclon was following its normal programming, then how did she call her friend up at the end? Or were they 2 different models? Hopefully someone can clear this up.

The Cylon that fired the shots was not Zoe. (The rotating eye is different amoung other things) It's implied that Daniel copied the processor design into that model. Also, it may be possible that Adama's daughter was scanned for a holoband at one point in the past. (hopefully that will be addressed in the series)

Yeah, but 2,000 years ago we didn't have printing presses and minicams and DVDs and DVRs and disc drives and the L.A. Times and millions of copies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Can we really expect that there will be no record of the great space exodus of 2009 in the year 4009? Isn't there just so much media now that even a nuclear cataclym couldn't effectively obscure modern (or even known ancient) history?

The Romulans knew where they'd come from. But they were super-secret and paranoid about other races. Only after they'd been at war with the Federation for some time, was the revelation made that they were an off-shoot of the Vulcans. This took the humans by surprise, but not the Romulans.

Of course, this all applies to the original unpolluted timeline. God knows what the fuck is going on now.

I always thought it exposed their hidden unenlightened past, so culturally they minimized it, and over the generations it became more of a myth, but it seems Spock knew about it, IIRC, in TOS, and he was arguably detached from the core of Vulcan society.

i think modern media is more likely to be lost than a book honestly. for example- cleaning out the basement i found a half dozen 5 1/4" floppy discs from when i was a child. i wrote short stories on them but try finding a device to read one of those these days. and that was only 20 years ago- in 1000 years what might happen? in addition- herc also needs to stop watching "complicated" shows while high.

I liked most of it. It was much better than I thought it was going to be. A few thoughts:

If TPTB want an audience like LOST rather than HEROES, the teen angst elements should be minimized or drop them entirely.

Morales as Joseph Adama and Stoltz as Greystone were VERY good. Great choices IMHO. Their bonding through loss arc was excellent (the whole arc was drenched with the loss theme which fits the entire CAPRICA story of impending doom). Their backdrop of the crimelords/criminal organization in Adama's orbit and corporate corruption of Greystone's world was spot on IMHO.

The mystery of monotheism is intriguing. The movie left me wanting to know more about the Soldiers of the One who have reappeared after a long absence (similar to Cylons who reemerged after 40 years in BSG).

This is clearly a corrupt world order (you can almost feel the Fall coming) and I can see the Toasters acting as enforcers or at least charged with cleaning things up.

In the commentary the director said there will be some space travel between the colonies. IMO that is a good thing. Although it is billed as a drama, CAPRICA has to remind viewers that they are in the unique world of the 12 colonies.

Polly Walker was outstanding.

Obviously, Siffy will carve all the nudity and lesbian kissing out of the pilot when it finally airs in 2010, so I can't help but think how much better the series would be on HBO instead.

Ah, well...Hopefully they tighten up the pacing a bit as they hack away, because some of those scenes just draaaagged. Oh, and don't you think Greystone's "daughter" seemed oddly okay with her horrific predicament at the end?

Loved BSG and totally get that this was not going to be the same thing. But they should have had realistic dialogue and likable characters. If we're going to be stuck with this group of folks, shouldn't they at least make them interesting? Not to jump back to BSG, but at least we could tell right away who was who and even though they were a bit more melodramatic in the mini series at least they were likable. But then again they had a pretty cohesive and concise story...robots wanted them dead. This story was pretty scattershot. Virtual reality with nakedness and sacrificing (for nothing other than shock value and to draw in Matrix lovers), the Godfather, The Faculty...and oh yeah, the characters are unlikeable. They also spend more time trying to explain the whole VR angle than an entire season of Star Trek did with anything scientific. I get the reason for the VR, but it just seemed gratuitous. On the plus side, they had great cinematography and effects.

The only thing I was not interested in during the pilot was all of the teen angst you mentioned. Everything else was pretty good. I particularly liked the "retro-Gattaca-ish" look of the series.

Some space travel between the colonies will be welcome IMO. But I hope the show runners come up with a good reason as to why Caprica has all that great tech that never shows up or is even mentioned in BSG. I would think it will be made illegal after the 1s Cylon war - but we will have to see how that will be revealed.

I hazard to guess the reason the Colonies have "lost" the location of Earth is that there was some kind of dark age that happened between the exodus from Kobol and the events of BSG. Similar to our history where much of the great works of antiquity were lost when the Great Library of Alexandria was destroyed (http://tinyurl.com/cv4env)... but there are lots of scenarios where a culture can lose the location of a city... or in this case a planet.

Perhaps settling or terraforming the Colonies was very difficult.

Maybe the tribes were all in 1 great "ark ship" that crashlanded in the Colonies and the settlers had to start with nothing.

Perhaps there was a yet unmentioned great war where cities were sacked.

It is possible that the Colonies went through a period of dictatorial rule and for some reason this oppresive government restriced and destoyed references to Earth.

Or perhaps the Colonies had no use for Earth and the Cylons who settled it... with the exception of religious zealots, so the Cylon Earth went from fact... to legend... to myth because it was not needed or thought about.

These are reasons just off the top of my head... but I'm sure the writers of Caprica can do a far better job than I.

Awesome show, great job!

Online clips and first 10 minutes had me worried -- but I like it overall. People who liked the battle scenes and the against-the-clock urgency of BSG will be let down. As for the ongoing debate about how the location of Earth was lost, I agree with most folks here. Replace "spacefaring" with "seafaring" and recall how the locations/languages/cultures of many "advanced" civilizations on Earth have been lost over the last 2000 years.
