it's not "cancelled", they're just postponing season 3 for another 10 years. with different actors.

Kings is cool, and it seemed to be a packaged deal for the ~13 episodes or whatever.. I hope it stays on tho.

They must survive. Make the right choices, or a Doll, the devil and Skynet will come for you.

Ungh. I had forgotten about the primetime Leno mess. It's kind of messed up, but I really hope he fails. It's not just about him, it's about drama and content for grown-ups in the 10pm hour.

So when these networks measure up who they think are watching these shows it just doesn't include those who download or watch online for their own convenience. Every year these networks cancel shows that have a huge following and then wonder why the uproar if the viewing figures are so low? Well the figures aren't low, the viewing is simply not being measured correctly and themore they cancell shows without giving them a chance to wrap up their storylines properly, the less likely people will be to get attached to future new shows with any real commitment. That's the catch 22! Advice to any new showrunners: Make all your first seasons a one story deal just in case the very likelyhood that it gets cancelled. At least then you can have something on the shelf worth watching or buying on Home video.

But I'm really pulling for it to get a second season.

It'd be really too bad if Reaper doesn't make it. Especially considering that Syfy (ugh.) seems to just keep greenlighting a ton of other crap instead of picking up a good series that gets cancelled ala Firefly, Journeyman, and possibly Reaper.

I would have thought that since almost everything on NBC sucks, Chuck would have had good ratings.

That's one of the most constantly entertaining shows on TV. It got a bit repetitive early this season, but since the Orion arc came in it's been great. Out of all the episodes so far there has only been a couple of duff ones.

by Amy Chasing
Apr 20th, 2009

Or knows anyone who watches any of those shows?

Where are their ratings coming from? Is it because people download the other shows (an indication that they're not only good but popular too) while if there's nothing else on TV you just let Law & Order play?

And it is to discuss its 50/50 status. Amazing. The one show on TV that actually mixes tons of geek references, with comedy, spy coolness, and hot chicks, gets NO PLAY on this site. I've enjoyed Chuck from the start, but moving from the mission-of-the-week to the Orion arc has upped the game.

is because the main character is a geek working at an electronics store, there are hot chicks who for some reason actually like the nerd, and it has adam baldwin from firefly..

But the writing and production are awful, its the same thing every week... . I can understand why alot of you don't want it to be cancelled but quality TV it isn't. The show about a half step above knight-rider, same style, better characters.... and y'know, not a giant ad campaign for ford.

THE UNIT unlikely? Goddammit!
by TheSeeker7
Apr 20th, 2009
05:40:45 AM
That really pisses me off. THE UNIT is *infinitely* better than 24. I like to joke to people (though in my head I'm not really joking) is that THE UNIT is like 24 but for smart people. C'mon, 24 always relies on soap opera-ish, WAY convoluted plot twists, while The Unit exists in MUCH more of a real world. Hell it's based on a book by an actual former black ops soldier, for godssake. And critics can't continue to blame it on the wives' stories always been flat out boring. For one, they're not, but even still, the action and story of the team more than makes up for the women.

The Unit bites it while the likes of The Ghost Whisperer continues on. You've seriously gotta be fucking kidding me.

If I could save any show on the bubble right now, Dollhouse would be it.

Much further down the list, I'd probably save Chuck too but I'd much prefer to save T:SCC, Reaper and Kings, all of which seem to be as good as gone.

Also Medium? I'm suprised to see this on the bubble. Most of the shows I like tend to have a fairly narrow demographic but Medium is one of the few that I'd think would appeal to lots of folk. It beats me why a show as well written as Medium is struggling when they're renewing Ghost Wisperer for frak's sake.

as much as i love the show, 8 seasons is long enough. plus based on what i read ABC picked it up to give them a proper final season so i was already prepared for this to be the end. but pulling a ER thing by changing casts is stupid, you dont completely change a cast after 8years and expect it to be good. it had a good run and while i seem to be a minority, i've liked the whole series so just make this the end and have an actual proper finale.

Stupid Network Execs
by Admiral Q
Apr 20th, 2009
07:11:00 AM
I don't know how they can even fairly register the ratings for The Unit this season. 90% of the time it got the whole CBS Sunday night schedule got pushed back by at least a half hour (usually more than that) by football or basketball. I had my DVR set to record it every week but unless I was watching (which meant I usually had to watch the last half of Cold Case) I wouldn't get to see it. I didn't even get to see The Unit last week because I was out of town and when I got back all that was on my DVR was (guess what) Cold Case. Big surprise that The Sarah Conner Chronicles had lower ratings, especially after they take it off for a month or more and then bring it back in the Friday night time slot of death without any real promotion of the fact. I'll be ticked of TSCC gets cancelled and they keep Dollhouse (I'm sorry but I stopped watching Dollhouse several weeks before the finale - sorry Joss). And just for the record - Chuck is awesome. a real gem of a show. If you can't see it then I feel real pity for you.

theres a severe gap between good tv and bad tv now... its at the point that ratings don't even matter its really obvious what's shit and what isn't. i can't understand how there are three different law and order shows, and three different versions of CSI on TV at the same time, it's beyond retarded... (what, one show with people solving crimes forensically wasn't enough? you need it set in different american cities so you "Identify" with it!?!?? DURRRR OKAY!).

Such an awesomely good show, very unique, not perfect, but worth checking out, and NBC, immortal fuckups that they are, ruined everything having to do with the show from marketing, to premiere date, to scheduled time. This show could have been really popular if they had given it Southlands slot. But nooo, gotta have a new COP SHOW. Christ. NBC is so retarded, they waste an incredible amount of money, and they didnt even give it more than 5 episodes to find an audience. Fucking bullshit. I really like Kings.

but I'm hardly an informed critic on that count so don't mind me. Personally I would have thought the cast of Dexter to be the most talented on TV. Or even Californication or Psych. But it's a tough call.

However let me set the record straight for those shows I do know about:

Chuck - I feel they know exactly what they're making with this show. They don't try and be something they're not, and what they do they do well. You could say House does the same thing every week. Or Burn Notice. Or Hustle. They are all still highly entertaining and worth your time if you like that sort of thing.

Castle & Better Off Ted - We hardly knew ya and hope we get to know ya more. Fillion is great to watch in Castle, and the whole cast of Better Off Ted are helping me forget the cancellation of another show with a similar vibe to it: Pushing Daisies.

Reaper - Soc(k) rocks! He, like Marmaduke from Carpoolers, could have a show all of his own. But I'd still like to find out if Sam ever gets out of his contract with the Devil. Please give us that much.

Which brings me to Terminator. The show is cool. That last episode was very cool. A third season could have the potential to be extremely cool and wonderful cross-promotion opportunities with the movie. Other shows have been in far worse situations so it begs the question: why stop now?

Chuck is fun. Remember fun?

But also good point on the 3 L&O's and 3 CSI's. Gimme a fucking break. Hell did anyone catch that awesome fucking joke a couple weeks ago on "House" poking fun at David Caruso? Somebody is really thinking of canceling a show run by David Mamet and Shawn Ryan? Who gets a free pass if not those guys?

That show beats the hell out of most of its TV peers. I thought the women's stories were kind of weak for half of the first season but ever since then they meshed well and it doesn't suck the air out of the room whenever they cut back to suburbia.

If THE UNIT packs it in without a compelling conclusion, I will be saddened. I like that show, and Ryan knows how to wrap things up well. Give the guy AT LEAST another season to close this out with a bang.

I am convinced the boneheads at networks flip a freaking coin to decide which shows to keep and which to end. Most of my favorite shows are in the 50/50 slot and unlikely to return. I wonder about the guy that called Southland awful though, I couldn't disagree more. It grabbed me totally on the pilot which is super rare. I loved it at the end of the first episode. But it's not, so I don't. Plus it's inherently difficult to like any of the characters. Everyone who works for the Dollhouse and has a personality is complicit in horrific memory erasures (especially the ones that go up to "The Attic") and repeated whoring out of brainwashed people. All the dolls have zero personalities, and even the one personality we know anything about from before they were dolls - Echo/Caroline - was a complete assclown. Even Agent Ballard is sexually obsessed with one of the sex-slaves being held by the Dollhouse, and let's not even get started on Adelle, who literally forces people to sign their lives away by locking them in a room without letting them leave. Fuck all these shitheads, and fuck Joss Whedon too. He's better off writing comic books.

11th Hour: I liked it but can see why it couldn't find an audience Chuck: Really?? Chuck is a great show. Consistently likable and the girl who plays Sarah is fucking smoking hot. If you don't like Zachary Levi jusr watch with the sound down. She's beautiful. TSCC: Got way better towards the end of the season. Better than anything I've seen on a Friday in a long time. What is gonna do better on Fox on a Friday night? C'mon, renew it already. You can't do better Fox and you know it! Life: Quirky and awesome. Damien Lewis MADE this show great, for anyone who actually tuned in. If it's cancelled I hope he does something else genre related. How about a REAL Asimov Robots novel with Lewis as Elijah Bailey? The Unit: Consistently well acted. Jonas was bad ass. Got a little out there when the whole families went undercover but it was still a fun show that wasnt afraid to kill people, including major characters Well that's my two cents. Chuck and Life will be sorely missed

Thats were all the ratings information originates from. While I'm not a top level executive, I do have a pretty high position that gives me access to those in charge and I get to sit in quite a few meetings. Trust me when I tell you Nielsen succeeds IN SPITE of ITSELF. To say the equipment and information gathering methods are outdated is an understatement. Add that to the fact that some of the new regime are vindictive and morally bankrupt and what you get are numbers that don't reflect the general viewing public. I'll give you an example. There's a very senior level individual named Mitchell Habib @ the company who isn't well though of amongst the employees. Not too long ago Lou Dobbs ran a segment that was critical of Nielsen for off-shoring tech jobs. In a closed door meeting, Mr. Habib layed out a plan to pull and not renew Nielsen set-top boxes from Dobb's viewers to effectively cost him roughly 6 million dollars in advertising. I don't know about you, but that sounds like number manipulation to me. DOn't even get me started on the DAILY fixes we have to do because the programs that calculate the numbers either crashes or pulls in information in correctly...but until another company steps-up, that's what the networks are going to rely on.

This season? Not so much. I finding myself caring less and less if all the main characters can maintain relationships and more and more frusturated that the basic storyline of "Sam and the deal with the devil" has been spinning its wheels this entire season. Yeah, yeah,we get it. Sam's really not the son of the devil, and when Sam's dad reveals this, he'll break his deal with the devil and finally die. They made that clear with a throwaway line a few episodes ago. And so until that happens (at the season finale), we have to deal with Andi not trusting Sam (again), Morgan the douchebag, and Sock and Ben's romantic trials and tribulations. Plus, it isn't as funny as it used to be. This season is lacking some serious forward momentum and although I want it to get better, I know that few shows can pull a Lost season 3 turnaround, so I'm not really all that upset if it gets cancelled.

Chuck is my 2nd favorite show (behind Lost.) These are the only shows I look forward to on a weekly basis. Yes, Chuck most of the time has the "spy mission of the week" format, but they also maintain great continuity with smaller arcs dealing with the spy stuff, the Buy More, and Chuck's family.

The last few episodes dealing with Orion and now Chuck and Sarah on the run, has shown that the show has upped its game without compromising the comedy aspect.

How can you not love a show that has a tech dude, playing Missle Command to the tune of "Tom Sawyer", get the abort codes to stop a satellite from launching missiles.

First, HIMYM is better than 50/50. The numbers are solid and they do better in the key demos (18-34) than Big Bang Theory which has already gotten a multiyear renewal.

Also Chuck is great. It can be formulaic at times, but formulaic doesn't always mean that it is bad. Overall the writing, acting, and action are solid. Their numbers aren't much worse than Heroes which has all but been renewed and it costs less.

Chuck is much better this year, Reaper is slightly weaker
by newc0253
Apr 20th, 2009
11:20:12 AM
but, to be honest, the show started out pretty weak and, even at its best (c.f. the last several episodes) has never really been as good as it ought to be.

when i first heard the concept and heard Josh Schwartz was involved, i thought: Seth Cohen from meets Alias, should be a sure-fire hit. but in its first season, the show was disappointingly broad, lazy and deeply repetitive. And for a show that has as many clever references as it did, it sure did next to nothing with them.

Reaper, by contrast, started out in its first season with the same basic concept as Chuck but Reaper was the more inventive show, more willing to take risks and extend its ideas. I never understood all the folk falling all over themselves to praise season 1 Chuck when Reaper was that much funnier.

Season 2 Chuck has been much stronger, a lot better written and with greater forward momentum. But it's still never quite the show it could be. Season 2 Reaper, on the other hand, has kind of plateaued: still funny, but weaker on the overall story.

I enjoy both shows: it's a shame that Reaper may be going out on a low and Chuck on a high, but an even bigger shame that both are going at all. But i guess that, even if both are cancelled, we can look forward to next seasons' iteration of Guy Who Works In A Giant Retail Outlet Has Special Powers And Leads Secret Double Life.

"Who watches that shit?" Apparently not you as the rest of your comment illustrates: "It's the same damn show every week. Chuck screws up. Some fights. Some jokes. That's it." A. Chuck rarely screws up these days and actually usually saves everyone's asses. B. "Some fights. Some jokes. That's it." could describe almost any show on TV. That's a pretty lazy description of a show. Why not just say some comedy, some drama, some action. That's it so that you can have officially described every show on TV.

That show has many faults, but one thing it's not lacking for is balls. The Office does cringe-humor insanely well, but I don't think they have done something anywhere close to as outrageous as having a water fountain labeled "For Blacks." I heard last week's episode was a winner, too. I'll be watching that one back-to-back with this week's. I will give a show four episodes to pull me in. Better Off Ted paid off big time with the 4th episode. I hope they hit a stride and stick with it, because I do enjoy it.

Concerning The Unusuals, Cupid, and Scrubs...
by Freakemovie
Apr 20th, 2009
11:56:42 AM
The Unusuals -- as a big Lost fan, it's the only post-Lost show I've ever bothered watching. And it's pretty good! Feels much more alive than all the rigidly formula-ized CSI clones. I enjoyed the second episode even more than the first. Wish the ratings were better.

Cupid -- this show already failed once. Fairly recently. Who had the bright idea that 10+ million viewers would turn in THIS time?

Scrubs -- Fan of the show, not such a fan of Bill Lawrence's constant bitching about how NBC was mean to it and didn't let it succeed. So even though I like it, it's strangely satisfying that the ratings on ABC -- who according to Lawrence advertised it a lot better than NBC -- are even lower than they were on NBC.

Life is by far the best show on TV. The Unit was awesome too... though they've been making it worse and worse this year, I guess in order to get ratings, which is unfortunate. Terminator went from "whatever" last year to a most excellent show this year. It'll suck if they do not resolve things just as they got interesting..... Cupid turned out to be better than expected. The new leads have no chemistry and the lost, sheepish, and invariably wrong Cannavale's Trevor Pierce, who is clearly a mental patient, has much less appeal than the forceful and "always right, even when completely wrong" Piven's Trevor Hale, who just might actually be Cupid after all... But once you let go of the original (which was excellent), this is not a bad show. Chuck and Reaper are ok, but I can't say I care enough to be upset they are gone... I think we got everything we were going to get out of those two, everything else is just more of same... I hope "Ted" gets picked up - its a well done show, and Dollhouse... well, I have mixed feeling about this show. In the end it suffers from same problem "Studio 60" suffered - its trying to take seriously something that just does not warrant it. For gods sake, its a high tech escort service. I know it will probably grow into a decent show, but it can go only so far, and I'd rather see Joss do something a bit more interesting.

DVR Numbers
by killertv
Apr 20th, 2009
12:28:57 PM
People, wishing DVR/streaming numbers to be equal to television viewing numbers doesn't make it true. The number of people who watch television on TV (millions) is a lot more than those who watch television on the internet (thousands). Believe me, if the networks thought they could make money from a failing show, they would. Unfortunately, they can't. At least not yet. Honestly, though, Nielsen should figure out a more accurate way to measure viewers. Every cable box in the country could be equipped to report what channel is being watched when, which would be a huge increase of data. But I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. Kind of like the profitability of poorly performing shows on the net. @Gruntybear - Scrubs has been on Wednesdays @ 8pm for a few weeks now... but it's on ABC, not NBC.

I record this and watch it on Tuesday afternoon after getting in from work. It's a preposterous concept, but thoroughly enjoyable and fun to watch. TTSCC HAS to come back. It's one fo the best shows on. Hell, I watch Dollhouse because of the lead-in - although to be fair, Dollhouse is starting to find it's footing as we get deeper into it, so I would watch it anyway. Finally, Reaper... t's like all of the above shows (maybe a bit of exception with Dollhouse): it has chemistry amongst it's cast members that allow you to buy into the premise of the show easier.

As a female, I happen to totally love Chuck! The geekiness, the humor, the love story - I absolutely LOVE the show! I'd be so upset if they canceled it! But the show that I would be MOST angry about if they cancel is The Sarah Connor Chronicles. We bought Season 1 DVD set this weekend and watched the entire thing, then went and started over on Season 2 on the DVR. This show rocks! And should NOT be canceled! And if Fox (POS network!) cancels it than I won't go back to them (it's the only show I watch on their network) and I'll pray that someone else takes it and I'll be a lifelong member of their network. This show has excellent story lines, writing, and acting!! PLEASE DON'T CANCEL THESE SHOWS!!!

UNLIKELY TO RETURN

------------------

- Cupid: Not surprised. Won't be missed. No Piven. Nor Marshall. No dice. The new cupid looks like an unlikeable goon. Wasn't a fan of his "acting" on Will & Grace. Not a fan here.

- Kath & Kim: Deserves to die. Selma Blair may be a piece of hot beanpole ass, but no ass is worth sitting through that shit.

- Reaper: I actually WOULD miss this show. The supporting cast has been so great this season. Sock & his step sister. Ben & his demon lover. Morgan. Funny stuff.

- Terminator: I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, this is currently the best sci-fi action show that network TV has seen in years. On the other hand, the S2 ending acted nicely enough as a series ender. Just like the S2 finale to Dark Angel some years back. Not meant to be a series ender, but works well as one anyway. Its something I think I can live with, even if I'd miss the Glau. The show had a strong run.

FIFTY/FIFTY

-----------

- Better Off Ted: Best new comedy in years. Unfortunately quirky doesn't play well with studio execs, especially ones from conservative networks like ABC.

- Castle: Fillion is kinda a jinx. Isn't he? I mean, just about every show he's on gets canceled or is on its way out. Drive. Buffy. Firefly. Two Guys, a Girl & a Pizza Place. His name might as well be Johnny AIDS where viewers are concerned.

- Chuck: An... interesting... show, but I could never get into it. I never found the cast or stories engaging enough to watch for more than one or two odd episodes.

- Dollhouse: THIS is 50/50?!?! I like the show. Don't get me wrong. However, its as slow as molasses and the ratings are actually WORSE than TSCC. If Terminator gets canceled then this show's only chance is if FOX tosses Whedon a pity season to make up for Firefly.

- Medium: This season one of the best so far. Not as good as the Angelic Huston eps last season, but still enjoyable TV. Unfortunately, as good as the show still is, the story twists and are becoming ever more predictable. If there's a special guest star.... He's the bad guy. If you have half a brain enough to watch the opening dreams then the rest of the episode is easy enough to predict.

- The Unusuals: Ooohh!!! A quicky cop show!!! Wheeeh!!! C'MON. People don't want a quirky copy show. NYPD Blue didn't succeed because of oddball characters. It lasted for so long because of very human, very likable characters and a less idealize, more real world take on the genre. The Unusuals will fall victim to the Cop Rock syndrome. The gag will wear thin quickly and the show will have to rely on... *shock*... quality storytelling. Not gonna happen. Plus, Amber Tamblyn is only believable as the naughty cop in my fantasies.

LIKELY TO RETURN

---------------- - Ghost Whisperer: Another season of the chunky ass, big tits show? Why?

- How I Met Your Mother: I lost interest in this show at the beginning of S2. The show's premise has been one giant tease and no amount of NPH coolness can make me watch it again.

- Law & Order: Mixed feelings on this. Great concept. Interesting stories. Some really awesome eps. Hate the constant cast changes throughout the entire franchise.

- Southland: Not a big fan. Maybe because the promos already had me sick of it before the premiere.

- Ugly Betty: America is actually pretty cute off-screen, but this is such a chick show that I couldn't care less. I'd sooner watch repeats of Smallville's worst eps than some whiny fashionista wannabe.

EVERY show. So many storylines were forcibly cut short. So many shows lost momentum and just never recovered.

I've become so disillusioned with TV. 95% of what's on is total shit. The other 5% is "on the bubble" stuff that will so be canceled and replaced with more mindless reality TV shows and phoned in procedurals.

What pisses me off most is FOX in general. I remember when they first opened shop. The TV shows were edgy & took risks. FOX was the renegade network that represented everything that wasn't the establishment. Now, they've become "the man" and are afraid to roll the dice on shows that no other network would. That's kinda sad. It's like watching a former hippie run for his 3rd term in congress.

With this economy, the only renewed show is the "safe bet" one. Cheap to produce. Junk food to the masses. Mad Libs writing.

Forget about the stupid gimmic of HIMYM. It is by far the least interesting part of the show - and if they got rid of the Bob and the kids, no one would miss them (they are pretty much gone these days) Just treat it as a next generation of "Friends"-like sitcom - a damn funny one at that. It was one of the best sitcoms, until Big Bang beat it up and took its lunch money... (ironic isn't it...)

This season looks to be wrapping up in a fairly sensible manner. I'm happy with JD ending up with Elliot. Cox as chief is long over due. I'm ecstatic that Ted grew a spine, even if he's still a wimp. Janitor's growth has been fun too. Kelso as the Norm Peterson of Sacred Heart has been a hoot.

As much as I like the interns, the familar faces ARE the show. Without them, it wouldn't be Scrubs.

If you like a show, it'll get cancelled. Bottom line.

Dollhouse ain't bad, though, guys. But, just like any other Joss Whedon show, it takes a while to build up. The potential is there, we just need to get through a few things before the zazz hits. Is that any different from Buffy, for example?

And be nice to Castle. I'll be the first to admit that I only started to watch it because of Fillion, and it can be too formulaic, but the crimes are creative and the characters are awesome. If I can't have Pushing Daisies, I'll take Castle, thank you!

I share everyone else's amazement that Ghost Whisperer is still on the air. That is the most God-awful boring crap I have ever seen! Those stupid reality TV ghost shows are more interesting than this drivel. And Reaper might get canned? How!?! That show is gleefully idiotic, in a way that entertains us while keeping the drooling masses happy too (yay Sock!) or so you would think. WTF?

Sarah Connor Chronicles, okay, we all kind of saw that coming, even though the end of this season was phenomenal. I always enjoyed Reaper and Chuck when I got around to watching them. I'm left with Supernatural (hands down the best show on TV- fuck you, haters) and Fringe. Time to make way for more shitty reality shows....*sigh*

@buffywrestling RE: Ratings
by rsanta74
Apr 20th, 2009
01:22:25 PM
AFAIK, on average, I think that TSCC has had about 3.0m-3.6m viewers per ep while Dollhouse has had about 2.9m.

The most recent April 10 eps, actually saw a reversal of that trend. TSCC stayed on point with its predictable 3.65m. Dollhouse saw a surge to 4.13m.

Not the best ratings for either show, but certainly on par with the recently renewed Friday Night Lights and double what shows like Everybody Hates Chris or America's Next Top Model gets.

The real problem is that TSCC is too expensive for network TV. 3.65m would be forgivable if the show were cheaper. Apparently, there are not enough reusable physical & VFX related assets. Plus, the gamble of selling fewer commercials has turned into a gamble that has backfired. I'd gladly watch more commercials if it meant that the show would still be on, but that's just me.

April 10th saw both TSCC & Dollhouse tie with 3.65m viewers.

Dollhouse actually dropped from 4.13m to 3.65m from March 21 to April 10 while TSCC remained the same @ 3.65m.

I don't understand why The CW is so eager to get rid of "Reaper". Doesn't it regularly get better ratings than their precious "Gossip Girl" & "90210"? It really sucks that "Life" will probably be canceled. It's a terrific show. I don't even know why "Medium" & "Cold Case" are in any danger. They're both solid shows. CC has been on for a while and it seems to get high ratings every Sunday night. For some reason, I'm not surprised that "Dollhouse" has a better chance of renewal than "Terminator", though I really wish it were the other way around. I like "Dollhouse", but "Terminator" is so much better and deserves the renewal. It seems kinda crazy to cancel the show now, with the movie coming out and that fantastic finale. The only saving grace is that "Friday Night Lights" has already been renewed. It seems that TV viewing will be pretty dismal next season.

Someone, somewhere out there has the ability to make a new ratings system. Please start.

The networks want to make money and unless everyone on this board is ready to buy a new car or another really expensive product that will pour money into your show, they wont buy ads. The suits look at numbers, the number are from Nielsen. Overthrow Nielsen.

Why would you overthrow Nielsen? The numbers are right
by chrth
Apr 20th, 2009
03:31:16 PM
Any college level statistics course would teach you that they're something like 95% accurate (and no, your favorite show is not in the 5%). Don't fall into the common fallacy that if X people agree with you that you know of, then 10^X people actually agree with you in the real world.

As for DVRs and Hulu, etc., the execs and advertisers simply don't trust those numbers -- not because they're inaccurate, but because there's a lot lower of a guarantee the commercials are actually being watched. Live viewing will always take precedence, and Nielsen's numbers for live viewing are probably as accurate as you're going to get without Big Brother (the concept, not the tv show)

They should go an hour long with Parks and Rec on another day. I hate how all the drams and stupid CSIs get an hour, lets have some more comedies do that.

than straight ratings. Unit and Without a Trace are doing good ratings slot-wise, they just cost too much to justify their current position on the schedule. They could be saved by jettisoning some core cast, but would the show suffer as a result? It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Nielsen employee again here...you have to understand, it's not the statistical model that's outdated, it's the input that needs to be questioned. Also, their method of data collection still relies on hand written mail in diaries in over 40% of the survey households.

Advertisers run what stays on the air
by TheKitchenNinja
Apr 20th, 2009
06:31:19 PM
Advertisers control what shows stay and go. We can complain all we want about studio execs (and there IS plenty to complain about) and Nielsen's ratings relevancy but the facts are these: Advertisers want eyes for their ads. Unless and until there is a different system that THEY trust to tell them where those eyes are looking (especially in the target demographics the advertisers are aiming for) they will rely on the Nielsen's ratings. Viewers are not the consumer, they are the product the networks are selling. Their consumers (where they get their money) are the advertisers. Nielsen's is having a hard time accounting for DVRs and other viewing methods partially because those methods allow the very thing the advertisers least want: the ability to skip commercials. If we want this changed, as far as network TV, we have to find a way to change how advertisers think - no easy task. But it also means you have to find ways of getting the advertisers what they want: their product promotions to your eyes. If they can't get that, they're not interested paying. The other option is to find a new way to fund programming. There are options out there, but it seems they all turn to advertising in some form or another in the end due to getting more money.

NBC should rethink possibly cancelling CHUCK...
by RyanMurray
Apr 20th, 2009
07:08:49 PM
Seriously. The show has a proven fanbase and has been truly hitting it's stride during this second season (where it could've done such a thing during the 2nd half of Season 1 which the Writers Strike cancelled) because the writers and the actors and everyone on the show is finally letting loose and having fun.

Oh yeah, and it has been GAINING fans as of late. How many other shows on TV have been going up? NBC has a winner on their hands if they find a timeslot where you aren't facing off against fucking 24 and Dancing With the Stars.

The show is nerd fun and action for the guys (and StraHOTski) and it has the romance and Zach Levi for the ladies. I'm honestly baffled as to why AICN doesn't cover CHUCK the way they cover HEROES because each show is practically 100% nerd driven in one facet or the other. The fact that CHUCK invades talkbacks for LOST and HEROES and 24 should speak volumes to Harry and whoever runs this thing. Give Chuck a talkback once, JUST ONCE, and see how many people talk about it.

NBC...at least give the show Season 3. You'll know by halfway if the show is going to succeed any further, and then you can tell the writers to wrap it up. It would be a pity to see all the fun and the recent storylines with Bakula all go to waste.

If you cancel it, at least let some other station pick that show up. GOOOOODD DAMN YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

:)

Is it even Earth? Maybe these aren't necessary to know, but I know a couple of people who stopped watching after the first ep because they didn't understand the reason behind there being a king. But... this series has great promise and there are a lot of questions I have that I hope the show lasts long enough to answer.

Baffled on this one too, can only assume that Herc only covers shows he loves or has a connection with the writer/producer/director etc.

There is obviously some people whose shows will be covered based on past glory, i.e. Whedon.

I have no doubt that if Whedon produced a show that showed a blank white screen for 40 minutes each week, Herc would promote...I mean comment on it.

They both can manage to shoot themselves in the head and foot at the same time. I wonder how long it will be before we end up bailing out the networks with taxpayer money because they are too stupid to produce quality products that people actually want? If they do stumble on a quality product, the execs shitcan it as fast as possible and give themselves a raise. It's interesting how the BBC can produce higher quality shows with a fraction of the budget and, horror of horrors, they actually support quality programs without Neilson Ratings telling them what to think. Maybe BBC execs actually watch televsion.

It appears that Herc doesn't get any advanced screening and as many have commented the TB for Lost is now going up much later than previous seasons.

Do any of you actually know how nielsen gets their numbers? Do you know what percentage of people have the special nielsen box. Do you know how one is selected to be a ratings representative. Do you know the percentage of people who just leave their tv on all the time to one channel. Of course you dont.

It's a great mix of charm, action, comedy, romance, nerd and various other genre spoofing, silliness, charm and well... heartwarming charm. Likable characters, predictable but entertaining stories, all-round solid, quality work from the entire cast and crew and no real weaknesses. It's actually a pretty remarkable achievement. It deserves a better night and lineup.

"Guys, Joss Whedon's 'White Screen' is possibly the greatest hour of television ever produced in the history of the medium. In fact, 'White Screen' may well be the greatest piece of fiction in the history of the English language. Joss has completely captured the unique banality of our insipid existence."

I kid. I kid. I love Angel (and Buffy and Firefly), but I definitely feel the pain of those who feel that many damned fine hours of tv are neglected while even Joss Whedon's most malodorous flatulence is endlessly parsed and praised.

The Unusuals is actually good, and fun, a cut above all the other mediocre primetime procedurals. You can't assemble that great cast anywhere else. Castle OTOH is a mediocre procedural, and I think the lady cop may be a robot, but Fillion and the jokes are pretty funny. It's nice fluff.

For me Heroes is the most disappointing show post season 1, in recent years.

A show that seemed to be so fun and entertaining, became such a convuluted mess.

Shows like Supernatural on the other hand have got much better since season 1, found some real direction.

Are there other shows out there where people have been so disappointed in what they have seen after season 1 or alternatively where it has improved ?

... at this point I think its just as well that it get the axe. For 3 seasons it was without a doubt one of televisions best. But this current season, to my mind, not only the network execs but the show's very creators did everything in their power to kill it. If it wasn't the ridiculous Sunday time slot constantly pushed back by football games and pre-empted by whatever lame hallmark movie of the week or awards show, than it was the staggering drop in the quality of the writing. For me the tipping point was the ridiculous cop out non-resolution of the col Ryan/Tiffy affair. A fist fight and everyones pals again, WoW. To me this season has yielded a total of about 4 solid episodes. In its current state there just won't be much to miss.

The those confused by the setting, Kings is a modern day re-telling of the Story of David from the Old Testament. Names and places are taken directly from the Bible. McShane is based on Saul, the kingdom is ancient Israel (Shiloh was the ancient religous capital) etc. Not sure on the map accuracy, or if they bother - I doubt the average American would recognise the political borders of the ancient Middle East. Thought it was pretty obvious from the start though, what with David vs Goliath and the "crown of butterflies" stuff in the first episode.

I swear, if ever there was proof that the Nielsens are totally out of date and out of touch and there desperately needs to be a COMPLETELY REVAMPED system for determining actual viewership, it's the fact that a fun, original and truly great show like Pushing Daisies is gone and we'll now miss out on a total cutie like Kristen Chenoweth, yet America Ferrera's ugly fat ass will be back on TV for yet another year!

You know, if SO many shows are failing and if SO many things are facing the knife, once again I just wish these lame-brained TV execs would use the summer to run UNAIRED PILOTS they're just sitting on...that they actually have ALREADY PAID FOR AND SHOT...to test the waters and to see what people might REALLY get excited over.

Seriously, if you have so many shows shitting up the airwaves, why can't I finally see the unaired Warren Ellis GLOBAL FREQUENCY pilot? For the MILLIONS of dollars that were spent on it, why can't I finally see John Woo's (John Woo!!!) LOST IN SPACE pilot that the WB passed on?

NOTE TO TV EXECS -- get your heads out of your asses and show some of these pilots. Little history lesson for you: CBS was going to bury MAGNUM: PI because they didn't think it was good enough, but then Lucas and Spielberg came knocking to use Tom Selleck for RAIDERS. That is what finally got CBS to say "Gee, maybe they know something that we don't and we should actually air this thing and see how it goes." I'll tell you how it went: the fucking pilot that CBS almost buried resulted in 8 years of primetime success and millions of dollars.

So get your heads out of your asses already. The summer is coming when you'll just give us reruns anyway. So if you're going to bag so much of the dreck you have been showing, use that time to take a few chances!

Seriously.

Think about how many shows are on that are actually cool, well-written and interesting. Now think about how many crappy, bottom-feeding so-called "Reality" television shows are on the air.

Now, think about the ratings--and which shows are in danger of being cancelled.

I basically refuse to watch new TV at this point. What would be the point? It is all cancelled before they finish their stories.

If everyone who made a new show thought that their initial order of episodes was the entire run, told a complete story but kept enough ideas that it could continue (just in case)--then people would want to buy the series on DVD, so they could watch a complete story.

Gossip Girls and 90210 draw a younger and larger female audience. That's the demographic that The CW wants because it's the niche they're cultivating towards advertisers. It doesn't matter that Reaper draws higher ratings, because companies that want to advertise on The CW don't care to sell to that show's audience.

The journals are supposed to get used, but they are factored in after the equation since national overnights are based solely on the Nielsen boxes (as I mentioned earlier, those boxes are in roughly 60% of Nielsen homes). The diaries work like this: those instant numbers we all see...those are form the boxes, the diaries are used to help stations determine profitable time slots for ad revenue...it gives a more complete picture of the demographic, but they really aren't used for ratings info. It'sas archaic as it sounds. We have a room with a bunch of brown legal type boxes filled with those diaries broken down by zip code. When a local station is visiting, some of their staff will go into a designated client room and review the journals. Having sat in those sessions, I cna tell you no one cares about the ratings info, it's solely demo info, who's watching what at what time and how much can they now justify charging for time during a particular program.

I give every comedy a try and I've watched it twice and never laughed. The lead guy looks like a woman in drag, the girl is bland, I'm so sick of Jason Segal (is that his name?) popping up in comedies when he is so unfunny. The only saving grace is Neil Patrick Harris. If he had a spinoff I'd probably watch. CBS comedies are cookie cutter and lack innovation. NBC may be at the bottom, but at least their comedies are fresh.

The vast majority of TV shows I've watched last season and recently are NEW shows. Better of Ted is hillarious, Pushing Daisies got axed, Dirty Sexy MOney got axed (but deserved it after retooling the second season), My Own Worst Enemy - axed, Dollhouse (which I've been a strong supporter and fan) supposedly 50/50 but they won't air the final episode, Chuck has been solid since day 1 and may get axed...I've only seen a couple eps of Castle, but it may also get axed. I've been watching Cupid, and was a HUGE fan of the original, but this new version stinks and feel like after-school-special compared to the original. Meanwhile, I've stopped watching 24, stopped watching heroes, stopped Desperate Housewives long ago, the same with Grey's Anatomy (hated it since it became the Lizzy & George show). Lost is still great, but there is only one more season. I guess there is still House? Might as well cancel all my cable and just get Showtime so I can watch weeds, californication and dexter. At least then I'd only have a TV bill for 3 months out of the year. Networks...get your shit together. If you continue NOT giving new shows a proper chance you will continue losing viewers to the internet. This is just getting fucking sad now. Is there a single NEW show in a couple years that has stuck around? Networks need to pull their heads out of their asses and understand this isn't 5 or 10 years ago. They aren't going to get 20 million viewers for every show. There are way more channels to watch, they are competing against HBO and Showtime and other premium channels, there is DVR and Internet which tons of people use but isn't counted in the ratings. Hell, my parents got DVR long before I did and haven't watched live TV in a long time. They tape everything and watch when they want. I also rarely watch scheduled TV anymore since I got DVR. TV is going to go the way of the music companies if they don't come back to earth and get a little more realistic about their ratings chances as reported by Nielson.

Why did Chuck need to get a condom to fuck Sarah?
by Leafar the Lost

Chuck woke up, there was Sarah right next to him willing to fuck, and the first thing he does is run into the bathroom to get a condom, but his friend had replaced it with a note. What the fuck?! Sarah did not ask him to put on a condom. She knew that Chuck didn't have any diseases, because she was watching him 24 hours a day. Did Chuck really think that Sarah had AIDS or something? She would have stopped him if that were the case, because part of her job was to protect him. The only thing that Chuck had to worry about was getting her pregnant, and that is what the Morning After pill is for you motherfucking idiot!!! The only reason that the condom hunt was put into the script was to make some kind of political statement. Yes, we get it, always use a condom, but Chuck had the chance to fuck a blond goddess. I know its just a TV show, but it still pissed me off. Jesus Christ (Yes?) Yvonne Strahovski is hot! I hope they cancel "Chuck" just because of that scene.

it's one of those things where you need to pay attention and I can't really pay attention to any new shows right now. I was hoping to watch the whole thing on DVD. I didn't know it was doing badly. Whoops. I watched a couple episodes of "Crusoe" looking for Sean Bean. That show was fairly stupid but that lead guy was really hot. It seems like a lot of these shows get everything right except for the actual writing. "Castle" I've been 1/2 watching, guess why, but it's dialogue is trying to be romantic comedy snappy and I don't really understand who the people are that fall for that junk. But then again I don't watch that Housewives crap, so maybe that's who they're going after. Do they count how many people watch these things online or are they still going by Neilsen families?

Some of us simply use a condom routinely, even though we're disease-free and are 99% sure whoever we're with is. And believe it or not, you're better off not popping the morning-after pill every time you have sex.

So, although it wasn't a political statement, it was a clunky plot device (as palooka_boy suggests).

Big Dumb Ape - NBC Tried Running a Pilot That Wasn't Picked Up O
by The Gipper

NBC tried running a pilot that wasn't picked up once during the summer. It was some show called "Seinfeld."

http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0 ,,20202819_20202832_1200145_1, 00.html

Seinfeld PREMIERED May 31, 1990 THE SCOOP Note to current and future network TV execs: Sometimes it pays to bet on an oddball (even if you're not quite willing to premiere it during the regular TV season). Of course, this particular bet took a while to pay off. NBC aired comedian Jerry Seinfeld's sitcom pilot — titled The Seinfeld Chronicles — as a one-time special in the summer of 1989, then gave the series a mere four airings in 1990. That tiny investment of airtime eventually yielded huge ratings dividends. Seinfeld not only went on to become a cornerstone of NBC's must-see Thursday lineup, but it also left a lasting mark on the pop-culture lexicon, introducing the world to such Seinfeld-ian terms as sponge-worthy, puffy shirt, ''serenity now,'' the manssiere, Sack Lunch, and, of course, yadda, yadda, yadda.

...the nets are also out to get the female demographic because that's the politically-correct, trendy thing to do now. I'm sorry, but most women basically have the worst taste imaginable when it comes to drama, art, pop culture, film, music, etc., etc. (I know this sounds misogynistic, wish it wasn't true, but it is) Women are programmed at an early age to go along with the lowest common denominator in order to be "popular". (Can't blame them for going along, either... as a man, I never had to deal with the viciousness of "the mean girls" so I really can't blame them) Bottom line... your girlfriend (and everyone else's) has destroyed TV!

The Amazing Race-huge numbers, horrible concept, poorly shot and edited. 90210-7 people watch this show, which is good for the CW, but not for a real network. Privileged-Started well enough but soon bogged down into the lesson of the week. HIMYM-Never very good, over acted and way too needy. Dancing With The Stars-Horrible and apparently cursed. The Biggest Loser-pure exploitation and not in a good way. Private Practice-Bad high school drama. Too bad it's about 30 somethings in a doctor's office. It might make a decent teen comedy. The Hills-Idiotic Kath and Kim-Great writing but the acting is horrendous. Hell's Kitchen-Who cares? America's Next Top Model-America's Next 15 Minutes of Fame, nothing more American Dad, King of the Hill-when were these ever funny? CSI:Miami-Poorly written and executed. Horrible acting. In The Motherhood-How did this show ever get a green light? Wife Swap-Just stupid. Changed Premise Kings-Should have been about the King of America with another country west of the Mississippi called the Republic of Texas or California. Knight Rider-Single guy linked mentally to the car he developed. Episodes are stand alone. Similar to Viper. Hiding out from those who want to steal his technology. Cupid-More magic My Own Worst Enemy-Speed up!!Tell a story for once. Terminator-Should have left out the teen age angst routine. That episodic arc sealed it's doom.

Seriously, has Whedon done anything good beyond Firefly? I used to be a HUGE Buffy and Angel fan, but I decided to hit the dvd's again a few months back and I just realized what complete shit most of the episodes are. Terminator has to come back; it's finally hitting its stride and even the iffy eps aren't so bad when you watch them at leisure (i.e., you haven't been waiting all week for them). Besides, Summer Glau is hot! If they put her in tight leather pants every ep, ratings would soar (at least for the geek-boys' obligatory 3 minutes). As long as we get Lost (which we are!), Supernatural, TSCC and 30 Rock, the universe will be fine.
But hey

Two and Half men is coming back, right? OHHH I HOPE SO! That show is so funny. Almost as good as the George Lopez show or According to Jim. Luck for us Mr. King of the Stand Up George Lopez is getting his own late night TALK SHOW! COME ON HOW AWESOME IS THAT! Fucking Beverly Hills Chihuahua with his own late night talk show! Its going to be so good, like Chevy Chase good. Man Chevy needs to be a bad guy on some show, that'd be good.

They always start off good, then about half way through they turn to suck. Last weeks episode was the first time the whole episode was actually pretty good.

It's one of the few show my entire family sits down together to watch. It's funny, well written, quirky characters, funny and unique in a TV show land littered with glum and serious police procedurals. I'd like to see T:SCC and Castle stay too. Oh, and who the hell watches Ghost Whisperer and Numbers? Seriously.

TSCC is great, my favorite network show after Lost. My third favorite is Kings. My former first favorite show was Pushing Daisies. I'm also a big Reaper and Chuck fan. And of course, I don't watch anything on the "Likely to Return" list. So fuck the suits up their stupid fucking asses. And fuck the people in this country for their bad tastes.

Last week's Chuck = Series Finale

Really, they tied up all loose ends and brought closure to the whole Chuck storyline. If they had ended the series with everyone heading off for the wedding rehearsal that would have been the perfect finale.

Besides, next season's show will be unrecognizable if they do renew it for another year. They've ended the story. It would be a different show using the same characters. Nothing is worse than prolonging a show's demise by throwing the original premise out the window and trying to attract viewers with a different direction.

I've been done with network TV since Serenity got fumbled. LOST will be the only show left worth watching, and that's probably only because Abrams has so much Pull.

My wife and I have enjoyed the hell out of Castle since it premiered a month or so ago. It's been ages since anything new came on TV that we actually enjoyed, here's hoping it's renewed.

I can't remember the last show I watched consistently on ABC, CBS, NBC, etc? Probably King of Queens or Raymond. The sitcom is dead, there are too many CSI's, and shows like Chuck are ridiculous. HBO, not as great as it used to be, still has shows like Curb and Entourage that are great. If they took away the basic channels from my TV lineup, I don't think I would miss them.

Geez! Cupid, Sarah Conner, Ted, Chuck, Castle, Dollhouse... Enjoying all of those. Dollhouse was slow to start, but it's gotten very intriguing. Chuck has been a winner from day 1. I didn't expect Sarah Conner to be good, but it has continued to improve, and this season was fantastic! Cupid needs more time to build an audience. Three episodes, and you're talking about cancelling it? ABC is learning from Fox, it would seem. I want Castle to succeed, just because Fillion *really* deserves a primetime spot. So, I'll be sad to see any of these go.

if you've actually been watching chuck, you would know that it has developed a larger mythology and has had an awesome story arc going for a while now. Some great shows start with very episodic/self contained episodes, while slowly building towards a great story arc about 1 1/2 seasons. Look at some of the best shows--supernatural, buffy, angel, (even firefly to a certain extent) smallville (granted, not one of the best shows on tv, but it has followed the same formula) alias, x-files, life, and more. With what chuck has been doing as far as the new story arc has made it one of the shows i really look foward to, instead of just a show i like. Fucking losers are so guick to hate on a show without having any idea whatsoever about what is going on in that show. Its pathetic. Inform yourself before you make judgements and call something crap that nobody should like. What are you people hoping to accomplish??? you think those of us who really like a given show will read your ignorant, lame ass post and suddenly realize the show we are enjoying so much sucks??? seriously, get a life.

I don't watch many shows, but wouldn't you know that the shows I DO watch would be in danger. This SUCKS!!!!! FTR...

Chuck is good escapist entertainment. It never pretends to be anything other than what it is: a funny and sometimes sexy show that never takes itself too seriously. (BTW, nothing but love for Yvonne, but Chuck's sister (Sarah Lancaster) is the hottest!!!)

I would say that LIFE is the best cop show on TV, but I don't watch any other cop shows consistently; none of the other shows have been able to hold my interest for more than a couple of eps. In contrast, LIFE is quirky without trying too hard (e.g. Unusuals), can be procedural without being too... procedural (e.g. Law & Order), and has a nice underlying conspiracy plot without becoming to tired and worn (e.g. many other conspiracy stories).

Medium is a consistently good show that is suffering from the "Heroes curse"; any show that follows Heroes is likely to fail. This is because NBC sticks with Heroes because it captures a key demographic even though it does poorly, overall. There's nothing wrong with this strategy except that any other show that appeals to a different demographic will likely fail. This is what ultimately killed Journeyman. NBC would be better off grouping Journeyman and Medium in to a single block (maybe Sunday) and creating a Heroes spin-off to follow Heroes. It makes sense to double down on the key demographic... but, hey, what do I know...

Better Off Ted is one hell of a funny show that more of you should be watching. If ABC would give this show a chance to find its audience they may actually have a hit on their hands.

If these shows are canceled, I'll likely stop taking a chance on major network shows. I'll just stick to cable: Burn Notice, Leverage, and The Closer.

" They'll likely treat that stuff like spam. Online petitions are worthless. Physical snail mail is always better. Voting with your dollar is the best way to voice your opinions. If the show already has seasons on DVD, buying them en masse will probably show your support for the show than some e-campaign." Okay, so what's a good physical to mail to at FOX then?
