Whats about the Story...What about the script?

I had no doubt it would be fast paced, action packed and beautiful...but not ONE reviewer has mentioned the script. Not one hyperbolic, Red Bull fueled, freshly Star Fucked reporter has said a word as to whether those nitwits stuck in fart, piss, and masturbation jokes. Nobody has said squat about how these characters interact with their world, other than they are reverential while feeling "fresh".

PLEASE tell me that Hack ORCI pulled a rabbit out of his base pandering ass and wrote with some heart and respect...tell me he has risen above everything he has shat on us before...tell me this is a GOOD script and not another Orci/Kurtzman punch job.

The story and the script are fine. The dialogue captures the best of the Star Trek banter and precious few missteps. Its the best and most polished feeling of anything these writers have been involved in. It definitely comes across that they love and respect not only the Star Trek universe, but the original characters especially.

The Twitter-retards who want to say, "The Trek fans shouldn't complain" or "Trek fans don't need to worry," oughta stop sucking their mother's hairy balls for a few seconds and realise nobody gives a shit what they think! Tell us about the movie, and spare us your contempt for people who followed Trek for all these years. If we wanted the opinion of braindead inbred neth-heads who don't have the sense God gave a retarded goat we would have asked Michael Bay to give us his two cents. You shitstains hating on Trek fans should ask yourselves, would there even be this "awesome" movie were it not for the Trek fans you hate so much? I know asking you Twitter-turds to think before you speak is kinda like asking a drug addict to quit crack Cold Turkey but for the sake of sanity on the "internets" you now have to shut the fuck up! Then PLEASE drop dead. But not before you smother your parents for the crime of having brought your retarded asses into this world. Nobody asked your opinion of Trek fans. In fact nobody asked your opinion of the movie, except Paramount. Save your bitching and moaning for them. Capice fucktards?

I'm actually kind of disappointed - what I understand is that this is an alternate time line that springs out of things getting all f'ed up - which means the original time line is just fine, simply unfolding in a different direction. That sort of feels ball-less to me; don't get me wrong - I'm a fan, but I thought it would take some massive cojones to say, "Fuck it...let's destroy the timeline and rework it...everything you knew is GONE." I wouldn't have minded that in the slightest. Still, all of these reviews sound heartening - and with nothing else worth a shit coming out this year, this is now my only looked-forward-to release of the year.

I get the sense from the reviews that the majority of geek reviewers were so bowled over by the opportunity to see this with the filmmakers in attendance that no one gave a shit about the story. They were wowed by the effects and action and were just generally swept up in it all.

While it's cool to see Nimoy as Spock again, if they just ignored the original version and went their own way, I think they would have benefited from the complete break.

While they get a "fresh timeline" with this movie, it feels secondary or supplemental to the original series. But we're fanboys, the only people in the world that could care about this thing. TREK is gonna be a hit regardless of our nuanced griping.

Seems Platinum Dunes Is Now Finalizing Its New Freddy Krueger!! Merrick here... THIS ARTICLE over at Bloody Disgusting expands upon/solidifies early indications posted by Latino Review in February; Bloody Disgusting says Jackie Earle Haley is now in final talks to play Freddy Krueger in Platinum Dunes' NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake. BD says an official announcement may come as early as next week. Haley, of course, recently played Walter Kovacs/Rorschach in WATCHMEN. Growing up, he was always my favorite character in Peter Yates' BREAKING AWAY. For a remake/reinvention that really doesn't need to happen, and once one looks beyond that "Freddy isn't Robert Englund!" prejudice...this isn't altogether unreasonable casting at all. A friend recently loaned me THIS collection of the original films. Now I'm trying to figure out if I wanna sit down and watch 'em all again...or keep my head clear for whatever Platinum Dunes is gonna bring us.

That Aussies are kinda bummed that their premiere has been hijacked by Yanks.

That fat jokes against Harry are futile and too easy.

That Gene Roddenberry probably IS spinning in his interstellar grave.

And most importantly that Tanya Roberts tits in BEASTMASTER are well worth a wank.

I think we're all a little wiser for having read this talkback.

My thoughts from the Sydney screening
by Riley Martin
Apr 7th, 2009
02:35:55 PM
Screened in digital. The guy who mixed the film sound set up the sound system in the Opera House. Aussie president of Paramount spoke first, then JJ, then introduced Pine, Urban, Cho, Quinto and Bana, who began to sing. Digital picture so sharp & clear. Beastie Boys 'Sabotage' during young Kirk car chase....weird. This is way different than a 'Star Trek' film. Lots more action :D Kirk and a green alien chick...yay! And she's Uhura's room mate, lol. Uhura is hot for Spock! Bana is a good villain. He he, red shirt dies during Space jump. That bizarre little alien with Scotty...wha? And the slapsticky beaming into the water pipes....totally unnecessary, thinking....does *every* scene have to be a dilemma? Oh, Spock just happens to be on that snow planet, huh? Nimoy seems so out of place in this movie but I can't figure out why I think that. Barrels on to a satisfying ending. But does that mean Vulcan is no more in this version of Star Trek?

We had a digital screening which was set up and supervised by JJ and the sound guy themselves, a red carpet event attended by the director and 5 actors from the movie, and well covered by the media as the world premiere. by Leafar the Lost
Apr 7th, 2009
05:32:19 PM
I QUOTE: Fox News columnist Roger Friedman is out after posting a review of a leaked full-length work print of " X-Men Origins: Wolverine ." Fox News said Monday that the company's representatives and Friedman "mutually agreed to part ways immediately." Friedman had been an entertainment writer who has contributed to FoxNews.com for 10 years. He wrote in his Fox 411 column Thursday that downloading the 20th Century Fox superhero prequel was "so much easier than going out in the rain" and that the movie "exceeds expectations at every turn." The early review of the film, which 20th Century Fox described as a "stolen, incomplete and early version," was later removed from the Web site Friday. Fox News and 20th Century Fox are both units of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. The movie, which focuses on the beginnings of Hugh Jackman 's clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine, is not scheduled for release until May 1, but the leaked version began appearing online last week. 20th Century Fox promised that the source of the film would be prosecuted and said the FBI and Motion Picture Association of America are investigating the leak.

This is what I've come away with over last night. Even with a room full of Wrath of Khan freaks, who didn't even get to see their beloved movie, saying they enjoyed this movie more than any Trek film since TWOK, there is still a small group skipping over all the praise, just looking to find flaws. And you're going to find flaws. Life=flaws. film is just another human way of getting perfection as close as possible.

We all make our own judgments in the end. It's not like you're doing a public service, it's just how human beings experience anything.

Let the nit-pickers pick those nits. All is does is ruin their own visceral experience because they're watching a big screen film through a Microscope.

by malificus

First of all, he's dead, so there. Second of all, since the original series every aspect of what has made Trek enduringly great has been from folks like DC Fontana who worked on and developed the fucking show beyond the stiff-assed core concepts that Roddenberry started with. Thirdly, the Great Sponge of the Galaxy would be gleefully happy with anything that garnered him attention and made him a buck, his two most overriding motivations. I'm an original series fanatic but the constant Roddenberry cannonisation sickens me when so many other people are far more responsible for what makes Trek great. Good to see so much positive comment on the new take though, I look forward to it, fuck the haters.

"For anyone who has endured the longueurs of both the Star Wars prequels and Matrix sequels, the distinct lack of politicking and speechifying will doubtless come as a blessed relief, but in a time when the United States is engaged in two wars, the failure to even acknowledge the issues arising from space imperialism and the Prime Directive is to flinch from battle. Harsher critics may even deem it a dereliction of duty."

The reviewer is an ass.

and I don't really understand it. You're talking about science fiction movies - when I was a kid, adults called them kid's movies. I love the ardor, but what is with all of the vulgarity and name calling; really sad and lame - especially where Harry (and script girl are concerned). Just lay off the personal crap and stay on topic - it strengthens your position.

Why is Empire's review above so bad? Since the BSG reboot, the bar has been set for meaningful and time-relevant topics being inter-mingled into sci-fi plots. And most have embraced this trend, showing that the public can consume intelligent pulp.

Nero going back in time couldn't screw up the timeline of the Enterprise being built. That is why it was being built in SAN FRANCISCO - Just like it said on the plaque on the wall in the series from the 1960's. The Enterprise from TOS WAS NOT built in space. It was built in San Francisco. San Francisco is on Earth. Really. Get a map. The 49'ers play there ON EARTH. Later versions were built in space as the writers became more educated, but the original Enterprise was built on Earth and no amount of whining "NANANANANANANA!" with hands over your ears will change that. There is a piece of metal that is television history that is far more canon than wishful thinking.

But the "San Francisco Ship Yards" of which you speak is, within TOS timelines, an orbital yard. It is called the San Francisco Ship Yards because...1. It is in geostationary orbit over the SF area; and 2. Starfleet headquarters, and the offices for this shipyard are located in San Francisco.

Parts of this shipyards "dry docks" are seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture...when the newly refurbished Enterprise is launched

And if you STILL don't buy it..i suggest you ask the nerds over at Memory Alpha...those rabid dorks will set you straight...or geek rape you for asking.

Not to be too picky, but it's impossible to have a geostationary orbit above San Francisco. It would have to dip as far below the equator as SF is above the equator.

The Enterprise can't take off from Earth, anyway... so I'm fine with the idea it was built on Earth, freighted up to orbit, with final assembly done in space.

Four lousy stars? That's all you can spare for a movie that made people cry with joy?

They cried with joy, Empire...they did. They sat there, all through the fucking credits, holding it in, then suddenly the lights came up, and it was just too much for the latent cornball asshat...I mean, "kid"...in us all. They broke down in tears, man. Blubbered like a little bitches with a skinned knee.

But in joy. That's beautiful.

Memory Alpha can try and try all they want. It doesn't change the fact that TOS was written by a bunch of Shakespeare fans and created by a writer, not a physicist (much like the folks at memory alpha since they do not understand why geostationary orbit over San Fran doesn't work - they're just trying to sound smarter than they are). When Roddenberry WROTE it in 1964, San Francisco was on Earth. No where in any episode or movie did they say that the original Constitution Class was built in orbit. As far as it goes, they never specifically state that the Enterprise cannot take off from Earth, though it sure doesn't look atmospheric capable I grant. So the folks that want to argue are Ret-conning and then griping when Abrams Ret-cons back to they wayt it originally was.

that a one off buffy movie maybe in the works. tentative story and it is very very very early days. The apparant scenario is that buffy returns to her vampire/monster ass kicking ways as vengeful mom. buffy as a vengfull mom???? we all know that SMG cant act outisde her buffy character. and her post buffy career is in the toilet. A new buffy movie is really the last throw of the dice.

is that they are obama fans and were shocked that the movie was not political in any way. Roddenberry for saw american dominance in outer space. americans were pioneers. the villains were The Russians(klingons)and Romulans(Chineses). remember Star trek was written at a time when america were figthing the communists. The enterprise is very much the model of the UN. it is a ship where all races are included and the prime directive is really UN Charter for human rights. The enterprise is tasked with enforcing that by entirely peaceful means and like the UN the enterprise cannot get envolved in wars of any kind. But of course the romulans dodnt believe in the prime directive and never have. The enterprise like the us army has its guns ready just in case. The prime directive is alway there but the enterpise doesent always abide by it.

don't ya think they could GEO using station keeping given the fact they have Gravity generation capability and limitless fuel/power?

For that matter given that they do have gravity generation..they COULD build them on planet...but not only would that fly in the face of everything created/written/imagined since the series began...but it'd also just be lame as fuck.
