Too bad he can't make decent movies. Still, when promotional campaigns are incomparably better than the films they sell (see "Cloverfield"), it's interesting, too.

Because we got Nimoy on stage and got to see Abram's ST early. How could I say anything negative about the movie? After all. One hand washes the other. Yes, Quint is actually promoting the movie, to change the naysayer's minds. Once it comes out and all the promoting is done. Will get the real reviews. Yeah that's right. I smell a plant!

The kids in the class HATED the Next Generation. They treated them like wannabes...like new Ghostbusters or something.

I remember the class used to draw "wars" on the chalkboard...one side the high and mighty original Trek squad, and on the other side the pussy-ass tiny Next Generation drawn about half the size with their little weak phasers. And the originals would be drawn obliterating the Next Generation. Memories...

You're wrong about this one. That might have been the hope of the studio in arranging this screening, but I am telling you my honest thoughts. You're exaggerating my review to make it out like I'm giving it a pass, but I'm not. There are troubles, I highlight them, but none of them derailed my enjoyment of the movie... not because the studio asked me to or demanded it. I had no idea I was seeing this tonight. These are my thoughts and I stand by them.

We've seen the villain stuff done pretty much to death. I hope you can somehow get the crew into a plot that forces them to solve a problem with ingenuity and teamwork that doesn't involve some badass villain. Think of something mixing the grandeur of STAR TREK: TMP and the humanity and humor of STAR TREK IV. If you can pull that off, you will have a truly groundbreaking and true-to-TREK show on your hands.

The directing sucks, the actors suck, Chris Pine and Sylar are so yesterday. I could have done the special effects so much better. It would be a lot less work if you would just take my word for it, because all this complaining is a full time job.
The score
by Kraken
Apr 7th, 2009
02:53:24 AM
I have to say it was one of the things that disappointed me. I really loved the movie... but the "in story" score felt, adequate. The problem is, I've always felt the score was in essence the Enterprise's voice. Sadly this score never gives Enterprise her moment to shine like the previous films do. Oh, she has her moments... but nothing truly iconic. One of the very few flaws in an overall fantastic movie.

Apr 7th, 2009
02:57:44 AM
There is no comparison for me. I think Horner's score for Wrath Of Kahn is one of the best movie scores laid down. That said, Giacchino is a very strong composer and did a fine job scoring the movie... but none of it is iconic. Just solid. The end credits are a tribute to the original themes though. I wish they'd used more of the original notes in some of the main score for the film. But I don't think it hurts the movie, the score is still a "good" movie score. The only times it feels pff is during the hero shots of the Enterprise. They feel a little flat because of the new score.

re: look of Enterprise
by Kraken
Apr 7th, 2009
03:01:21 AM
Enterprise was great looking. This comes from someone that has a NCC 1701-A model I painted when I was 14 sitting on my desk. The only issue I have is when you see it in space for the first time... they just kind of cut to it. No slow loving reveal... just, oh, look at that, there it is. The cut they choose to use in the first reveal suffers from a lack of scale and awe, just bam, full side view. But the movie makes up for that later when the Enterprise gets to kick ass and really shine. So fear not, she looks right, and she's still the best ship in the fleet.

If it makes you feel any better, a music composer friend of mine who was at the screening tonight was gushing about Giacchino's score (then again, he's not a big fan of Horner in general). I respect his opinion quite a bit, so maybe everyone else will love it. I might be too biased because I love the old notes so much.

It's a tiny bit contrived, as is everyone's placement in their "parts". But not super ridiculous at all. When he joins Star Fleet, 3 years pass before he's on the Enterprise (and he's considered a great student). So he's not some stow away that accidentally takes over the Enterprise. It all makes sense in the course of the story.

I'm an old school Trek fan. I was cynical when I saw the trailers for this remix, but this movie really won me over tonight. The pros : The new cast, story, visuals (very "used world" and practical look), and no cop outs. Cons: A few "fan dialog" moments that feel a little forced and awkward (very few though and forgivable) The engine room of the Enterprise looks like a glue factory from 1982 while the rest of the ship looks very sleek (yes, I realize it's an engine room and should look rough, but it felt like it wasn't even on board the Enterprise when we see it), the characters kept "lucking" into their old positions on the Enterprise over and over. But the majority of the film really works perfectly. So much fun for Trek fans and non Trek fans alike. My wife started crying when Nimoy came out as a surprise to intro the film. She didn't grow up a film geek like me, but she did grow up loving the Trek movies and Nimoy as Spock was, as always, note perfect. It was a great night. Thank you to Paramount, Harry and the Alamo for an amazing screening. This one will go down in the geek history books. The writers mentioned they were working on the script for Star Trek 2 right now... let's hope one of the crew members of the Enterprise doesn't briefly toy with the idea of growing a goatee. :)

by Kraken
Apr 7th, 2009

Feels very much like ToS Kirk. They paint him as a genius, but one that leaps before he looks. Pine pulls it off, very likable as Kirk. There are even a few "Shatner" moments that he does that are VERY subtle but really work and made the fan in me smile. His work with Urban (Bones) is going to make all the fans smile. They have the Kirk/McCoy chemistry right off the bat, fantastic. I think the second film will bring new Spock into that fold. I think the highest compliment I can pay to this film is, I want to see part 2 right f'ing now.

Honestly, if Shatner had shown up somehow I would have been pissed. It made perfect sense that Spock Prime was there... but in this story, there would have been no reason for old Kirk to show up. He died in Generations (yes, I know he comes back in the books, but that doesn't count in movie world) ... Kirk would have been dead in Prime Spock's future time, this is post Nemesis... Kirk would have been long dead from old age anyway. Maybe Shatner will show up in Star Trek 2, but I think having him in this one would have been too much. Honestly, what I would love for them to do is a TV- Next Gen reunion movie... search for Kirk? I'd rather not see Shatner show up in these new movies at all because that would mean more time travel. I think it worked in this movie as a setup for a new Universe, but I wouldn't want to keep seeing it used as a device in the sequels. Otherwise it would turn into Enterprise.

totally change the entire aesthetic of the Star Trek universe, canon and history, which I am interested in but not completely sold on, but figuring out a way to get Shatner, the man who is responsible for making Trek what it is, in this film some-how, some-way. I just don't buy it. It seems to be a big dumb Star Trek movie, and I'm not sure I'm into that.

I think there should be a 48-hour wait period between the screening and writing the review. This sounds like it was blast because it was such a great switchup - go see Khan and get surprised with the entire new Trek movie. I'm sure this was done with a sense of fun but it also probably really jazzed the reviewers so much that they would be more forgiving of a less-than-stellar film. I haven't seen the new Trek so I can't say for sure, but I remember how I walked out of Phantom Menace thinking it was a whole lot better than it was, and that was because I saw it in a packed theater full of SW geeks on opening day. About 12 hours later the crushing realization that the movie really sucked set in. I'd like to hear a review from someone who let the film settle in their minds a bit after the euphoria of the surprise showing wore off.

Unlike FatShat owning the role of Kirk, which he doesn't, you can't bring Khan back. Montalban owned that role. It would be like putting George Bush on Mount Rushmore. NO KHAN in the next movie. That would be lazy writing and an insult to a deceased character actor whose body of work was great.

You want villains for this next film in the Abram's Trek? They have a rogues gallery that would rival Batman. I'd like to see big screen interpretations of Charlie X, Mudd, Kirk from the Mirror Mirror universe (Shatner anyone?), General Trelane, Nomad, Gary Seven ... there's a huge list to draw upon ... and then there is Khan. Personally, I'd love to see Shatner as Kirk from the Mirror, Mirror universe go up against Pine's Kirk.

It's not rehashing ... it's saying that there are great villains in the Trek world that can be rebooted in new and great ways. There is a huge amount of characters. Was it rehashing to bring Khan back for Wrath of Khan? No. It made for a great movie because he was a great villain. I'd rather see movie with Batman fighting the Joker than Batman fighting some made up villain.

I don't want to have to wait until midnight May 8--the 7th is my birthday and I told my husband he's taking me to the midnight showing. As for Khan...Khan is Montalban. Nobody else could ever play that part again, the role is so associated with him, just like it'd be impossible to have a Joker who wasn't Heath Ledger. My question, because this is my only worry about Abrams having directed it, is that they don't turn Uhura into some action chick, do they? JJ has a habit of making a lot of his female leads the same, but that's so not Uhura, so does he do her justice?
one word: KLINGONS
by Dr_PepperSpray
Apr 9th, 2009

*They need an iconic villain.* Stop trying to stuff everything into your post Khan expectations. What made Star Trek 6 so great was that it brought a new kind of enemy, prejudice, rather then some rogue character set on a course for revenge. Kirk figuratively, and literally, fought himself in VI..it caused him and everyone around him to grow up a bit.. Sure there was Chang, but he was just one of several gate keepers. Don't get me wrong, I love Wrath of Khan, but not every story HAS to be Star Trek 2.

Now I haven't seen the new movie and originally didn't want to, but yes! The buzz has taken me over. Fine, it's Utlimate: Star Trek. I can live with that; but if Batman begins was followed by the Joker, then I'd say Startrek 11 *where are we at now?* should be about Klingons, and you know I'm right. If I had to give some advice blindly, I'd love to see more exploration then simple TNG space patrolling, as well as an injection of Hornblower. I'd love to see a green Kirk forced to go against a well-trained Klingon bird of prey. I'd also love to see Aliens that aren't simply humans with ridgey foreheads. Klingons should be ALIENS, not cuddly like TNG, as foreign to us as insects, and think and fight outside human expectations - real masters of space combat. If they want a historical template though maybe they could be LIKE Nazi Marauders and Kirk could go against their Klingon equivalent of Rommel - really cut his teeth and show us why Kirk is so revered throughout the galaxy while showing us why Klingons are so feared.

Just a thought.

Your Batman Begins-TDK is a great analogy IMHO. If Batman Begins was followed by the Joker in TDK, it would be fitting to follow up this "Kirk Begins" Star Trek with an arch villian comparable to the Joker like Khan, only reboot Khan too.

With an imaginative story, it is possible to have exploration AND a rebooted/re-imagined Khan at the same time.

My suggestion is to re-imagine Khan by giving him and his superhumans the great empire he dreamed of. This way you can include Klingons and other alien types, as well as unexplored, unchartered territory claimed by Khan and under his dominion.

With imagination, Khan's empire or realm wouldn't be a rehash of the Star Wars-type galactic empire. Nonetheless, the same thing could probably be done minus Khan with the Klingon Empire.

it's actually coming out may 9th. i'm a normal human. i have to work the next day so midnight is out. Anyone have any idea what day of the week this is? don't have a calender next to me here at the libary. i'm thinking friday. so maybe i'll call out sick. oops! so much for the "normal" human comment. i agree with an earlier poster, that the next movie should be a "sense of wonder" type movie, not a stock villian screaming "fire everything!" These days though movies are too expensive to produce and the objective is to get the asses in the seats which is why you're always going to get the transformers type of movies, and not the 2001 type. TV may be the last hope as far as that goes, although there too you have the "ratings" conundrum. I would say that the Galactica reboot was the exception, taking a show that was nothing but action and artifice, and bringing alot of cerebral "what constitutes being human and/or being alien" and it suceeded under Ron Moore. Hopefully Caprica will be more of the same. (otherwise i'll just have to keep watching the old Outer Limits series over and over!) That said, i'll still watch the first movie. I consider myself more of a movie fan and science fiction fan first before being a Trek fan so i don't give a rat's ass that other actors are playing Kirk, Spock, etc. I still think it would be cool for Ellison to do a really sense of wonder Trek screenplay that isn't interfeared with at all (but it'll never happen as Trek is poison to Ellison and with good reason.) sidenote: i'm so picking up the Ellison documentary from Amazon in May. (it's frakken awesome!)
