Tell No-One as 2008
by elab49
Mar 31st, 2009

was a tad confusing. God the US takes ages to show good films. The rest of the world would have found this a very amusing nomination for this year. So - is that why the appalling omission of I've Loved You So Long? Scott Thomas might finally get her acting nomination some time 2012? Timecrimes is the equivalent of a very good Outer Limits epi or equivalent, that is a bit obvious for the first couple of trips then improves. Very watchable, though. If you want a better time travel one, try Primer.

All the critics were 'now THIS is a thriller'. If it had been filmed in the US it would have been recognised for what it was - a bit weak. I mean, god, the 'ghetto' characters. So lame. So very, very lame.

It's a remarkable, profoundly violently samurai anime concerning the back story behind a duel between a blind swordsman who can barely walk and one armed swordsman. It's a lot more deliberate and concern aesthetics than something like Ninja Scroll. You'll either be fascinated by it, or want to turn it off quickly. There's a trailer at http://tinyurl.com/ckwd5c A piece on Shigurui will be in the anime column that'll be online Friday.

IndyAbbyJones: Harry's "Ghost of Mars" cameo
by The Reluctant Austinite
Mar 31st, 2009
10:47:26 AM
Actually, only Harry's head makes a cameo in the movie; his bloody, severed head on a pole. However, the reason it's so hard to spot is because when the producers saw the head shot in the dailys they deemed it "too recognizable" and thought it detracted attention from the movie. So what's left in the final cut is just the head seen from behind. Look for the long red hair. Moriarity (I think) made a great short film with the prop severed head as a birthday message to Harry at BNAT. Maybe we can get Harry to post that for your viewing pleasure.

On cable, and it plays much better on TV. Yeah, the story is still stupid as hell, and the Western allusions are way too obvious, but the cheap sets and effects don't seem as egregious on the small screen, and Ice Cube and Natasha Henstridge have a better than expected chemistry. It's not a "good" film in any sense, but genre fans will probably see it as a good 90 minute time killer.

Man, I haven't thought about that film in a million years. It sat at the video rental place in one of those huge, old school clamshell boxes. My buddy always wanted to rent it, but we always said no because it looked like it would be bad. Finally, we threw him a bone and we rented it. I don't remember much of the film (which is not a stirring review, I know) but I do seem to recall there was some light S&M involving the dwarf whipping half-naked girls. Really, the best part of that movie was the title.

Unless the movie took huge liberties with the plot and invented entire scenes and characters, I don't see how it could be all that compelling. But I'll be damned, there it is winning the French best pic or whatever and now certain critics over here are drooling over it...I may have to give it a look now.

I haven't read the book, but I've heard that they did make major changes (including the actual "culprit") and that the author of the book actually liked the movie's whodunit better. I thought the movie was fantastic. And there's a great chase sequence in the film that I doubt would have been anything more than a footnote in the book, so I'd say there are some aspects that make the movie worth checking out even if you thought the book wasn't anything special. Guillaume Canet is definitely a filmmaker I'll be looking out for in the future, as this was easily in my top 5 of last year.

It's a clever movie but you gotta take it with a grain of salt. Obviously if a timecrime was really going on then a timecop would've gotten involved. Pretty silly when you stop to think about it.

As for SEVEN POUNDS, I gotta admit, I watched it thinking it sounded hilarious and I was gonna laugh at it but I ended up genuinely liking it. So it may or may not have been the same reaction that Harry had after he almost had a baby and then watched MARLEY AND ME at the Star Trek convention or whatever he was saying in that poem the other day. Sure, it's a preposterous plot but I think it really works as a crazy tragic love story and I respect Will Smith for having the balls to do a movie like that. It takes its sweet, sweet time explaining what the hell is going on and must've been a struggle for, say, HITCH fans. Also the last scene (not the jellyfish) is the weirdest combination of sad, beautiful and disgusting I can think of. That really brings it home.

I would also like to say that I agree that IP MAN is a good one. Great fights and great acting performance by Donnie Yen. Also the guy who played Ricky-O is one of the villains and he's really cool at this age.

Yes, I had heard about the subtitle issue, and I still bought it on DVD. I figured I could just return it (or sell it back) for the version with the original subs, if it ever came out. I gotta say, they're not all bad, but the subtleties of the original subs really helped the movie. Still, I wish a certain Head Geek at the AICN had informed me of the subtitle fuck back when he discussed it on DVD column.

As a funny side note, while I was pondering this sitting on the couch, a trailer for what else but Time Crimes came on, with who else, but Harry's name up on the TV screen. I laughed out loud.

Why the hell didn't Magnet just get a print with the subtitles? Does that really cost more than creating new subs?

It's a kinda good movie that will be forgotten in a couple years. It'll sit nicely next to other forgotten Best Picture winners like Crash, Million Dollar Baby, and Shakespeare in Love.

I still can't believe it won with that silly as fuck Bollywood dance number over the end credits.

Anyone else feel it was a makeup award (in spirit only) for not giving the far more devastating and brutal City of God an Oscar? Because that's what Slumdog felt like, a watered down, conventionally friendly version of City of God.

I Saw GHOST OF MARS On TV. It STUNK UP my living room. No amount of budget or casting changes could save that piece of CRAP movie. And I come from JOHN CARPENTER'S hometown and college (BG Ky and WKU) Go WKU Hilltoppers! They beat Illinois in the NCAA basketball tourney before falling to Gonzaga by 2 points.

1.look at the way the hand holding his head underwater is facing. Makes no sense.....

2. how does a leg fly down through the boy holding him down?..

3. She would have attacked the boy holding him under 1st. She attacks the others 1st. So, the boy holding him under just watches her kill them and waits for her to kill him instead of letting go and running away???

"shows a bit of its cheapness."
