Bates did a fantastic job on this one. My favs are the silk spectre/mom theme and the comedians theme as well. Also the music that plays during the "thermodynamic miracle" scene always moves me. Reliving that part of the film is always great.

And that "2 steps from hell" musician, it was promptly deleted. Why? Because he was saying he wished paramount had picked him to write the score? Because his music rocks and gianachhciio whatthevwer the fuck his name is writes generic action music. yea delete that story...LOL

Merrick's being a dick and doesn't want to admit he made a mistake, I guess. So he deletes an entire story to cover up.

Better than if they had just redone the song Dylans way. The point of a cover is to see an old classic in a different light. I think MCR's cover of desolation row succeeded in that way.

yea I know, I didn't see anything 'wrong' in it, its true people have overwhelmingly responded to the music they used in the trailers Im sure its all legit, but the guy who wrote that music seems to get it, and I cant imagine the new Trek score matching that epic feel, I hope Im wrong. But what happened to the story it wasn't that controversial?!?! Lets be adults here..

We're waiting to receive an e-mail response important to the TREK trailer music story. You'll understand why this is significant when you read the reposted article. It'll be a pretty thorough article touching on a few more details about the matter.
Bishop, the problem was Merrick was incorrect
by D.Vader
Mar 24th, 2009

In his reporting. The problem is not that he wanted Tyler to do the music for the film, not Giacchino, bc his Trek Trailer music was so good.

The problem was, Merrick reported incorrect information, and therefore his conclusion was based on faulty intelligence. The "awesome" music he attributed to Tyler was NOT his music at all. Tyler did the music for Trailer 2. Someone else did the music for Trailer 3 (and it was a riff on the Batman Begins theme).

People pointed out he was wrong in the Talkbacks. Their posts were deleted (along with their entire post history on this site), and then the story was deleted as well. Merrick covering his tracks perhaps?

Thank you for the response! If you follow any other TBs, you'll see Ive been a bit agitated to learn my (along with other talkbackers) entire post history was deleted (I don't understand why). If there's more to this story (involving composers and copyright and whatnot), I understand. Thanks for at least reaching out with a small explanation. I look forward to the new story

MUCH better tone, which is far more likely to engage my communication, by the way :-) After it was pointed out that I'd specified the incorrect trailer for Tyler's music - I learned that, in many places on the Net - the Tyler cue used in the ***2nd*** trailer is attributed to Two Steps from Hell. In fact, I received e-mails yelling at me...saying that no Tyler music was used in any TREK trailer & the music from trailers 2 & 3 was exclusively Two Steps from Hell. So, I had top ask, "Whjat the hell?" I checked the two steps website. The ownership statements on the Two Steps site essentially encompass *all* music on their site - Tyler/CoD is not mentioned *anywhere* in regards to TREK. It may be completely by accident/unintentional/miscomm unication on the part of Two Steps, but they're essentially implying they owned/composed music that was Tyler's. We have a statement from Brian Tyler waiting to be published, and we're waiting to hear back from Two Steps now. Hopefully, all will end nicely for everyone. So...as you can see...the issue became MUCH bigger than me simply admitting I was wrong. As soon as we hear from Two Steps, or if we DON'T hear back from Two Steps, we'll repost the article...as promised. The article being put into suspension has NOTHING to do with coverups, or dickishness.
And by "repost"...

Yeaaaaaaah, sorry 'bout that. I was upset. I've had previous experience with another editor and being banned completely from the site for an unknown reason (I certainly wasn't insulting anyone or cursing). I think it was an accident, but when I emailed the guy, he was an ass, which made me think it was intentional.

So anyway, when I saw all my posts (and others) had been deleted, I was upset and couldn't figure out why. Most logical conclusion? Merrick is a dick!

As for the story, I'd think the deal is this: Producers (as usual) ask someone else to re-orchestrate a copyrighted theme. Like the Two Towers trailer used Clint Mansell's music from "Requiem For a Dream", but re-orchestrated by Corner Stone Cues.

Two Steps was hired to re-orchestrate Tyler's music for Trailer 2. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it was changed enough to be "different" (like their reworking of the Batman Begins theme for Trailer 3), and therefore I dunno if it can actually be copyrighted. I remember the trailer for "Nightmare Before Christmas" has John Williams' magical flying theme from "Hook" reworked so they didn't have to pay for the rights (I imagine).

So at the end of the day- here's my guess: Tyler's music was re-orchestrated, but not seriously changed, for Trailer 2 (like in the Two Towers). Zimmer and Howard's music for Batman Begins was re-orchestrated (and changed enough) for Trailer 3 (like the "Nightmare" example).

At least he responded, which is more than I can say about other editors on this site when they end up failing miserably. And the response makes sense: the story was yanked because they can't get their story straight, rather than it was pulled to cover up a mistake.

I'm still waiting on an explanation as to why people had their histories deleted (because that's still pretty fucked up), but since he's (at least) responded to one mystery, I'm willing to tone down the attitude

WATCHMEN's music and other farces
by Hooded Justice

Finally got around to seeing WATCHMEN.

Fascinatingly bad. I'm afraid I left two-thirds of the way through, but up to that point, I was mesmerised by how a story could work so brilliantly in one medium - and utterly fail to translate into another.

I think that WATCHMEN might have succeeded as a movie - but it needed a very different director. Snyder failed to establish the characters and the setting; and he made a complete mess of the shifts between time periods. And worst of all, he failed to elicit any kind of plot from the material. The comic was gripping; the movie was like watching paint dry.

Funnily enough, I didn't get annoyed by Snyder's utter cluelessness as to how to make this franchise work. But I DID get annoyed by the soundtrack, which is by far the worst I've ever heard in a movie. It was amateurishness on a scale you don't usually get outside youtube. Can't believe they released the movie in that shape.

Has a movie failed so completely to live up to expectations. Although I don't completely hate the film as most do, it is almost incomprehensible that a movie that had this much excitement and interest failed on almost every level. The high point for me was when the script writer showed up to beg people to see it while comparing Watchmen to Blade Runner, wow. The story of the Watchmen film reminds me a great deal of the undefeated New England Patriots who did everything right except when it mattered most. Now all that's left to debate is where Watchmen's place is in movie history, and if it's surpassed Showgirls and Gigli as one of the worst films ever.

I'vd been playing the lottery for 10 years and nothing. Lost this contest, every contest, really. Yes, I am truely a sad individual. Oh, on top of that, the President of the U.S. is only 20 years older than me. I wonder where I'll be in 20 years. Not in the White House, that's for sure. Anyway, congrats to the winner. At least a fellow Californian won.
