The Egyptian Theatre was having a pre-code WB film festival the last two weekends but I had to miss them because of work and family (the two great plagues). Had to miss a bunch of classic movies unavailable on DVD, but now it seems they will soon be available.

At least "Lost Boys of the Road" will be playing on TMC tomorrow, so I don't have to wait for that one.

What a good idea. I hope that other studios follow suit and offer something similar- I'm sure it will make a lot of people happy, and will be a nice little earner for the studio, who otherwise have a catalogue of movies that are sitting doing nothing. I love the idea of custom DVDs, but as others have said, it'd be a case of what the quality was like, as well as packaging, if there are extras, that sort of thing. I'm sure the list has a bunch of titles on it to interest a lot of film fans. I like the idea of making them available to the people that want them. That makes good business sense. That said, making them available to overseas folks like me would be nice too ;)
Now for the other studios to follow suit.

price isn't bad for what is happening, back end business wise. price is pretty weak compared to retail distribution. an online model i would have thought to be better (and cheaper) due to such little demand there will be for this.

While I must question the quality of these made to order DVDs it still is a viable (and welcome) option to increasing one's knowledge of film and obviously of increasing the size of one's video library.

This is an idea that book publishers should embrace as well, as there are many out of print books that deserve to remain in print.

The whole point of the internet business model / custom / on-demand production, is to make money from what is called the long tail. The statistically significant outlier.

If they artificially limit their distribution to the US, they are chopping off the end of that long tail. They will not make the same kind of money, if at all, by doing this.

Some MBA fuckhead who failed math, needs to take a bullet to the head.

I've been wanting The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (excellent western) and One On One (corny, but fun - and a young Annette O'Toole, mmmm). I also might buy a film from my childhood, Captain Nemo And The Underwater City. Anyone else here remember that one? And on the topic of Kristy McNichol - she is absolutely adorable in Just The Way You Are. No classic by any means but definitely the height of her appeal and talent before she retired a bipolar lesbian. Juuuuust kidding. Little Darlings is the one that needs to be released though and I'm not sure which studio that is, Paramount maybe. The Little Drummer Girl here is not bad but I would kill for Looking For Mr. Goodbar, also with Paramount - how can not be released by now? Anyway, some nice forgotten movies here.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally, Brasky takes me to a vacant lot and says, "Here we are." We sat there for a year and a half, until sure enough, someone constructs a bar around us. Well, the day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Brasky yelled over the roar of the flames, "Always leave things the way you found 'em!!"

On first glance I found "Captain Sinbad" with Guy Williams. While not on the level of Ray Harryhausen and Charles Schneer's Sinbad adventures, I saw this in a theater as a kid, and I enjoy it immensely. Guy Williams was a great swashbuckler. Then I found "El Condor" which will go nicely with my Lee Van Cleef Western collection. "Doc Savage" is the cult gem here, finally in widescreen in its camp glory. Thanks for the news!

I don't see enough people buying into it to turn insane profits... right? Anyway, if by some lark of marketing or cutting the price another $2.50 they somehow get market share with this, I think it could garner a lot more support for restoring and archiving important films at the other studios. I also hope that the writers, directors, actors and crew in these films will get the royalties they're due. (I won't hold my breath.)

Frankly, a custom-made product that sells at a price that most new-release DVDs retail at seems pretty reasonable to me.

It'd definitely be more expensive for them to produce an unknown quantity of different DVDs than one mass-produced batch of one movie. I think it's a good deal, frankly (pending video quality issues).

Oxford Blues
by ReelLifeLA
Mar 24th, 2009
11:03:14 AM
OK, time out here...this is precisely the problem I have with web reporting of almost sort these days...blatant (and avoidable inaccuracy). Oxford Blues is NOT offered by this service from WB..it isn't listed anywhere within their site. Look it up yourself. Yet Harry mentions it rather explicitly right there in his write-up. Which begs the question...for what possible reason would Harry even mention this film if the damn thing isn't even listed or offered by this service? Yeah, I know its possible (granted, only possible) that Harry may have mentioned it for reference purposes (to illustrate a film long held back in the studio's archives from commercial production & release due to uncertain market reception), but this is ridiculously misleading....not that I'm burning to see Oxford Blues, but hey, Harry mentioned it, I'm an guy in the industry, so I looked it up (theatrical, home video rights, etc). It's not even clear that WB WOULD offer this film on DVD, given that both MGM/UA and FOX both had theatrical release rights for the film, and still maintain rights for the films' release. Look, I know its a small thing to pick on this, however, sometimes I really long for the fact-checking and accuracy that (frequently) comes with established journalism. BTW...Palework, I share the same reservations re: archive DRM burns that are potentially not transferrable in the future, and that are priced 3X higher than standard DVDs due to scarcity and custom order.
