If you say so...

Personally, I thought it was one of the strongest films of the year along with The Dark Knight and Wall-E, and was more deserving of a Best Picture win than the ultra-hyped Slumdog Millionaire.

But what can you expect from the Academy? They gave their most prestigious award to such "masterpieces" as Titanic, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago, Million Dollar Baby and the ridiculously shitty Crash.

At this point, the Razzies have more integrity than the fucking Oscars...

I mean, when you like something you tell people and if they like it they in turn tell more people. It just snowballs. So I never really can blame a film on "hype". It's either good or not.

Personally any of those films could have won and I would have still been happy. They were all good, but I never saw The Reader so I can't comment on that one.

I can't ignore people attacking Zodiac. That film is fucking astounding. Every meticulous detail of it adds to this great bigger picture. There is no doubt in mind that this film will be seen as a classic, decades from now. Hell, it ALREADY looks like it was made in the 70s and is thirty years old. There is so much good stuff in the movie besides the greatness of Hurdy Gurdy Man, and the opening.

Ugh, that scene in the basement with Gylenhall and Fleisher is all about anticipation and getting nervous over NOTHING. The film is long, sure, but it needs to be to illustrate how complicated of a mess the case became and to parallel the inefficiency of the police system at the time. Ienjoyed Benjamin Button, but it could have been shorter. Also, Panic Room is a movie with a bad script that is made pretty enjoyable when you see the stuff Fincher does with the camera. It may come off as flashy, but he's saying a considerable amount about the condition of people being tracked and stagnant in the decreasingly safe domestic space, while only the camera is free to roam wherever and dictate the action. If another director did it, it would have just been a bad script made into a bad movie.

Just because you didn't understand the movie doesn't mean the script is bad. And I like it how you think that it was the script and not Fincher's direction that was the bottleneck for htis movie.

Further CLARIFICATION on the status of this project
by rsanta74
Mar 15th, 2009
02:20:14 PM
This is from CG Talk, a prominent international community for CG professionals. I came across it while checking my PMs there.

AND I QUOTE....

"Tim Miller here (creative director at blur) chiming in as requested. The film is in early development- it has NOT been set up at a studio and isn't in production. Eric Powell is working on the script and we're doing visual development. It was our choice to get the film planned out before we try and get a studio involved. "Early Development" means concept art, some CG animation tests and the script. And Fincher is a producer--as is blur and Darkhorse-- not directing.

To set the record straight for Capt Cook--Blur has never said ANYWHERE or at ANYTIME that we are "making a movie" We avoid hype and ALWAYS speak the truth. There's a HUGE difference between an announcement that a film is being developed and the film ACTUALLY BEING MADE. And we are careful about the distinction. And to be extra-clear...we're not even putting out these (or any other) press releases....it's just media reporting. This went up because Eric was having a big 10th aniversary party and Darkhorse thought it'd be nice to give fans of the comic some eyecandy. I will say though that development is coming along GREAT and I think the Goon will make an awesome film should we be lucky enough to get a chance to make it."

So... There you go. Officially, there is NO movie being made. What you're seeing here is concept work and nothing more. For now, it would seem that this is no different than any of the Buffy Animated concept pieces or the mini-pilot. Nothing is set in stone and no studio is attached. Having a producer and a team to do the pre-vis is a start, but there's not guarantee that this will cross the finish line.

I think that we should also note that Blur has previously announced several other big screen CG projects that have been sitting in limbo for years.

So, while Fichner is attached, don't get too excited either way yet. This may not even make the it out at all.

I think it's a bit anti-productive of him... to essentially tell people not to get excited for this movie because it's not sure to happen... I think the purpose of the release was to gain some excitement, show the fans what they're working on. I never said it was anything more than "in-development" and commentators on that board are making it sound like I tried to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Facts are they're working on it, the pics above are what they've come up with, how the film will look. They're locking in everything at the moment, but hopefully we'll hear more on where exactly the project is from Eric Powell in the next few days.
RE: Aint-productivity
by rsanta74
Mar 15th, 2009
03:49:12 PM
I can certainly understand your view, Quint. I genuinely don't think that it is his intention to be a Debbie Downer. I think that he's trying to put out some fires while simultaneously being a bit realistic.

Anybody in the industry who even knows Blur knows that they have a somewhat interesting past when it comes to feature length films. In the past, there was some serious talk about translating their (then) amazing short films such as "Rock Fish" or "Gopher Broke" to the big screen. Much ado, at appears, for nothing. Lots of talk and not much else. Then, there was talk about their involvement in a new "Heavy Metal" flick. Again, talk and not much else. So, when we see these pics over at CG Talk, we can't help but be very, VERY skeptical. As fans of their work, we've been burnt in the past.

No doubt, Blur has been burnt too, which would explain Tim's somewhat jaded viewpoint.

At the same time, he's saying, "Look. There's no press release. There's no announcement. There's no deal. There's just this concept stuff. If it turns into a film, great. If not, we'll live."

You know how Hollywood is. You constantly hear about these "in development" projects that linger in limbo for years. Projects jump from director to director and producer to producer. Some make it out of decades of development hell. Some don't. For every "Spider-Man" you've got a "Shazam!", "Spy Hunter", or "Black Panther."

It's not unreasonable for Tim to be wary given the nature of what "in-development" really means. It's also not unreasonable for him to attach such a disclaimer.

Fanboys get their underoos all wet from a concept piece from a project that may never leave the pre-vis phase. It's great to be enthusiastic about these things, so long as we've got our heads screwed on tight.

That they are working on it is a fact that proves that it is "in-development" not that it is being produced. A studio can just as well decide that, given the current climate for CG films and the market previously established by defacto standard Pixar, "The Goon" as a CG flick may not be profitable enough.

A full length CG flick costs on average of $60mil-$100mil to make. Take on promotion and that number climbs significantly.

Unless you outsource your production to some place like India or China where you can produce it for 1/10th the cost, as with Hoodwinked, the risk is quite significant once you leave family friendly Pixar demographic.

A CG Goon movie may end up doing amazing biz on the DVD front, but fail quite miserably at the box office.

This is why "in-development" for a CG flick means nothing. The Pixar formula has royally screwed the CG industry. These movies are so expensive to make that anything that even remotely deviates from talking objects or anthropomorphic animals is almost certainly doomed to fail.

For CG flicks, anything beyond PG-rated might as well be R-rated. Pixar set the pace. Anything darker or more mature than the PG-rated "Incredibles" is pure poison to the box office.

I'm sure that we'd all love to see a R-rated "Goon" or "Walking Dead" CG flick in the theaters. Never gonna happen. PG-13? Maybe. If so, I can guarantee you that it'll flop. Families won't take their 5 year olds to it. Older fans will be alienated by the "Die Hard 4" pussifying of it. Anybody hoping to make money off of it will get screwed.

THAT is the reality of it.

Since my hobbyist days in the late 1980s to my pro days now, I've been doing CG for 20 years. I've been on projects of all types. I've moderated CG forums big and small. When you see a CG project that looks too cool or too good to be true... it usually is.

The best thing you can do right now is be cautiously optimistic with this film. It could well languish long enough to end up being another "Delgo".

Personally, I'd much rather see this bypass the theaters and hit DVD directly as with "Final Fantasy Advent Children". That's the only way fans get the flick they want.

This looks like it could be awesome...

Granted, David Fincher makes the odd good movie: Se7en, Zodiac, Fight Club. It's just he seems to spend most of his time shooting pop videoes. The Game is a one-view-event, Alien3 was awful, so was Panic Room. Also thought Button was a dreary, morbid bore... but it looked pretty. It'll be interesting to see where he goes with his next big choices. Isn't his Heavy Metal also a cartoon? Unless he's hand-drawing every single frame I think he's a lazy sod.

So, what you're telling, now, is the truth. This movie won't happen. These aren't real stills; they're concepts. In other words, this is the version BEFORE the studio gets its hands on it. When the real version comes, the Goon will more resemble Dick Tracy, will be a man wrongly accused and on the run from the law, his friend will resemble a handsome Indiana Jones type, and the monster on the dissecting table will be replaced with Goon (TM) Slime Monster! IT DOESN'T HAVE A BODY OR BLEED SO IT'S OK TO BLOW IT UP IN THE MOVIE! Rated PG. Thanks a lot, guys, but now we can go back to reality.

My comments on CG talk were to clarify things so folks don't think we're full of shit when we eventually say---"WE'RE MAKING A MOVIE!" We won't say that until we know that to be true. We don't want anyone thinking, "Oh look, blur's making a movie....well, we've heard THAT before." We're not jaded or trying to be wet blankets at all; I just think fans should know what's really going on with the project. I don't consider this announcement "hype" either....it's just talking about development. Blur is INCREDIBLY excited about a Goon feature and we're working very hard to make it happen and I BELIEVE it will happen. I think the world is ready for more variety in animated films and I want Blur to be in the forefront of bringing different genre's to the big screen as animated features. (Not that Europe and Asia haven't been doing that for decades... but you know what I mean) As for the other comments about the Goon being watered down--don't expect that to happen. The beauty of having Fincher is involved is that he's all about artistic integrity and protecting the source material. We love the Goon just the way it is and have no intention of soft-pedaling the story or the crazy world Eric's created. And one last thing--those images aren't "concept art" it’s full 3d. Cheers Tim Miller Blur

by white_vader
Mar 18th, 2009
08:20:46 AM
although they might be 3d, they're not neccesarily rigged, you could well have sculpted them for the pose, right? Sure they look like the character design is finished so I bet you went a few rounds in the modelling, but are you saying they're actually ready to lipsync? Animate? Because that would mean it was more than concept art, whether they're modelled & rendered and "full 3d" or not.

Otherwise, it seems to me they ARE concept art, whether you painted them OR modelled and textured. And earlier you said "early development" and "CONCEPT WORK". So, forgive my confusion!

The main reason I think this (aside from it being the common early approach along with turntables and the like, with a bit of animation and maybe some quick mocap coming later) is that the second one is another shot, different lighting, but the same pose. I love what you've done - it looks fantastic, and you've even nailed the signature Fincher palette there, but if we're talking semantics and communicating where things are at, maybe you need to define it a bit more. Speaking of which, if it's for the early pitch/greenlight/financing, WHY would you make finished (which as I said to me means all animation controls) characters at this stage? And in terms of semantics "full 3d in this content means "not 2d painted" as opposed to stereo 3d cg, right?

Dialling the subsurface up to 11/waxy look actually looks great on the big guy btw!

Thanks in anticipation!

The thing is, once pixar crosses it's own line, then CG movies will be free.
