The twist in Pontypool

Taken from Wikipedia (and yes, it sounds awful) : "Conversationalists" At Rue Morgue's 2008 Festival of Fear expo, director Bruce McDonald stressed the victims of the virus detailed in the film were not zombies, calling them "Conversationalists". He described the stages of the disease: There are three stages to this virus. The first stage is you might begin to repeat a word. Something gets stuck. And usually it's words that are terms of endearment like sweetheart or honey. The second stage is your language becomes scrambled and you can't express yourself properly. The third stage you become so distraught at your condition that the only way out situation you feel, as an infected person, is to try and chew your way through the mouth of another person.[2]

my friends and I freaked out because we couldn't remember what we had just seen. We were trying to make fun of it afterward, but were not able to, as we had all collectively suppressed the film. To this day, None of us remember a single thing from that film except for the fact that we know we watched it in its entirety (and were, regrettably, stone sober).

That film is so bad, it's bad.

Troll 2, on the other hand, is worthy of anybody's DVD collection.

Pontypool is a bad choice as a midnight movie
by Garbageman33
Mar 13th, 2009
09:21:31 AM
I saw it in Toronto and really liked it. But I don't think it plays very well as a midnight movie. It's more cerebral. As for Quint's criticism that the twist is ridiculous, of course it is. It's a fucking zombie movie! Rage infected monkeys are perfectly logical? Besides, I admire that they tried to do something different with the genre.
It's not a twist, by the way
by Garbageman33

They never claim one thing and then it turns out to be something else. It's simply a plot point. Bruce Willis being dead, that's a fucking twist. A virus being passed through linguistics is not a twist.
The name comes from...
by Kabukiman
Mar 13th, 2009
09:26:06 AM
...an Ontario town named, no doubt, after the town in Wales. Why can't you take a movie seriously because it's named after a small town? ANYWAY, this review kills me, because the "twist" is so much more unbelieveable than dead people rising from the grave? I would probably agree with Garbageman, because it's not really suited for a midnight show because it's more than just a horror flick. It's more than just a zombie flick. It's a small, quiet movie with brains and ideas and it begs more of the audience than just bloodlust. It's a terribly fucking cool movie and I recommend it to anyone with an open mind. I will agree that Dr Exposition is a problem.
Pontypool Rocked - Quint Missed the Mark
by screenergal
Mar 13th, 2009
09:34:08 AM
Pontypool is a clever film with a more cerebral mood - Hitchcock with humor over classic horror schlock. And McHattie is phenomenal. Okay, so it's playing at midnight, but so what? If you go in knowing that it's a great flick with brains (good comment Kabukiman) then you'll see that Quint missed the mark completely (with the exception of Dr. Exposition who, I agree, is a bit cheesy). It is, as said above, a terribly fucking cool movie. Check out more reviews here: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ m/pontypool/?critic=creamcrop, and http://www.richardcrouse.ca/23 22/16669.html

What a God damned waste. I saw it for free and wanted my time refunded. I wanted to get paid for wasting my time watching that piece of shit.

Quint nailed it. Except he said the setup was great. By comparison to the rest...ya. But was it in any was something new? Nope. The whole movie is a waste of fucking time.

But, but, that review makes me WANT to see the movie!

Because now I'm REALLY curious what the bullshit, rediculous threat is! Genetically-altered sheep? Vorpal Bunnies? Ents run amok? A variant of the rage virus that only targets bloggers? Marionettes that have broken free of their masters' strings? Little people actors who are still mad they didn't get roles in Lord of the Rings? If you tell us, we promise we won't go see the movie!

I read that the director was trying to make an anti-vegetarian statement by having goblins turn people into plants and eat them. I could go for a nice veal cutlet right about now.

PS_ the woman who did the wardrobe for this movie was a former soft core porn star who did a couple of EMANUELLE films. I googled her and she was definitely fucking hot.

not at a film festival, it'll be playing a local theatre here in Halifax for a week starting on the 20th. They've got McHattie lined up for a Q&A on opening night, so I figure if I ever bother with it that's the night.

PONTYPOOL is incredible - perhaps not the best choice as a midnight movie, but it's a movie that actually asks you to use your brain. It's also funny and creepy and has an AMAZING performance by Stephen McHattie. Don't let Quint's review steer you away SXSW-goers - open your minds and judge for yourselves...you won't be sorry!

Saw Pontypool at TIFF this year and nearly everyone I met who saw it loved it. Though as a previous poster noted, it is not a midnight movie. There isn't that much gore and it is a little cerebral. The "twist" is just a new take on how zombies become zombies. Is it far fetched? Yes. What is interesting in the War of the Worlds Radio broadcast feel that the director tries to replicate.

The original film " Troll " is fricken brilliant. I highly recommend it , if only for a scantily clad Julie Louise Dreyfuss or the excellent song that all the creatures sing.

I first saw Highway 61 one some cheap-ass, UHF station in Detroit that was running it as their Sunday afternoon movie. I was immediately hooked on his stuff. Kinda interesting that he finally made a flick that ISN'T a road movie!

I never once in my review said there was a twist in Pontypool. It's not that it's a twist, but how they execute their plot point. Since it's been brought up here, yes... these people are word zombies, where words... in the English language only it seems... transmit the insanity. Look, that's not all that far off from THE SIGNAL, a movie I loved, where something being broadcast confuses you. But they try to make these things a threat like a traditional zombie and then not want you to call them zombies.

The handling of the material is what I didn't like. They could have done a lot of interesting things with it, but as it stands we just have a handful of people discussing the English language for the last 40 minutes of the movie, which was neither interesting nor well executed.

If you disagree with me that's fine. That the beauty of movies as an artform. I've done my part. I highlighted a movie I thought was a waste of a time slot during an incredibly busy film festival.

the costumes are so much worse than in Troll 1. I love that the family eat that green shit even though it looks like Play-doh. I love that Dead grandpa is basically completely fucking useless. Great film.
