DO NOT CALL THIS TOTAL RECALL
by Mullah Omar
Feb 26th, 2009
01:32:22 AM
If they are going for a faithful adaptation and not a remake of TOTAL RECALL, just use the original title. There is NO reason to remake TOTAL RECALL. There is a compelling case to be made for adapting WE CAN REMEMBER IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE in a way that is much different than the Arnie film. If they make this movie, the filmmakers and actors should never mention the Arnie film, ever.

an arnie film, my vote is for "The Running Man". The book makes the movie completely useless. But I'd like to see a Total Recall remake, the original can still stand on its own.

Note To Producers: The New Total Recall
by Media Messiah
Feb 26th, 2009
01:38:27 AM
Total Recall should have been a trilogy...that said, I would suggest that any new Total Recall film should be shot with a more real world stylistic speculate science feel, ala the New Galactica...meets Jason Bourne and the new film Taken. The problem with the original Total Recall movie is that it got more than a little weird and disturbing with the make-up effects and unlikable, often grotesque, characters.

Making another movie based on a story doesn't mean you're remaking the first movie. The film versions of Moby Dick aren't based on the other film versions; they're adaptions of a book. Or, if you want to get technical, they're ALL remakes, including the first film.

...Verhoeven make some more kick-ass movies (Black Book was awesome, for starters) than have people remake his few classics. I just watched Robocop the other day and was reminded how fucking in love with that movie I am. I just love it to goddamn death. And I'm fascinated by the remake/sequel/whatever because (a) I love Robocop and (b) genius Darren Aronofsky is attached to direct. But the thing is, watching Robocop, I was reminded of how awesome Verhoeven can be when he brings his A-game. Sure, he makes crap like Hollow Man, but he also can make Robocop and Total Recall and Starship Troopers and Black Book. I'm far more interested in seeing what Verhoeven does next than what someone can do with a Total Recall remake.

And the thing is, there are tons of Dick stories that have never been adapted for the screen. Why not go with something slightly, somewhat new?
I'm not really against remakes in general..

And you have never bothered, just thinking that the original story is better than the movie.

Well guess what? No it isn't. The original story is daft. It's a short story (you can find it in several collected works) and it has a point to make about memory, which is explored much better in his other works.

We'll remember it for you wholesale, is a bit shit actually.

I remember like it was yesterday TR coming out in the summer of 90 ...along with Die Hard 2 and Robocop 2 (hey that’s why Verhovan didn’t do R2..I just realised LOL) plus keeping upto date on the Trek VI news - was it gonna be a prequel with young Kirk and Spock or another film with TOS cast… Oh man…this is the first remake of a film where I feel ‘what? They just made that a couple years ago?!’…all the rest have been remakes of films at least from the early 80s time is moving too fast..its not fair. "Time is The Fire in which we burn" (funnily enough as i get older im appriciating Generations more...i get the themes and ideas and melancoly feel of aging etc more now and the idea of the nexus appeals to me more)

03:49:14 AM
yeah - i forgot to mention i remember Riker hot off First Contact was attached to direct the sequel with Arnold (this was before Riker fucked himself in dah ass with Insurrection and Thunderbirds)....that might have been cool - big Riker bossing Arnold about..maybe hed have even roped in Patrick Stewart as a villian...who knows maybe Frakes would have made a sci fi classic and be a big A list director now like Cameron (im betting if it had happened and been a hit Arnold would of had him direct T3 instead of lille man Mostow with his "Sgt Candy" scene PAHAHAHAHA)

Please, erase this news from my memory.

Total Recall was one of the last big SF movies done with mostly only practical effects (some CGI for the X-ray scene, okay) and it still is better than most of the hyped films these days. The movie still works today, no need for remake. Next...

Come the fuck on, people, they can't be serious, can they? This doesn't make any sense, especially with such a teenage mainstream producer like Neil H. Moritz (Stealth, Fast and Furious and xXx just to name a few).

This will have less violence (cause there's no fucking way that there's more violence), a dumbed down plot, young, mediocre actors and crappy CGI effects.

This film is great in so many ways ... effects, action, story (OK, it's not like the original Dick story), performances, music. BTW, another scene which can't be in a major Hollywood blockbuster today: when Arnie is being chased on the escalators by Richter and he uses some poor bastard as a human shield. How many bullets does that guy take? 20? 30? Also, from the life imitating art department: the scene where Arnie runs through the full-length x-ray at the spaceport... isn't there now a full-length x-ray being tested at airports now?

get made when De Laurentiis pulled the plug back in 1984 (probably after getting burned by Lynch's Dune). I think Richard Dreyfuss (!!!) was going to be Quaid, but I guess that makes sense because Cronenberg wanted an every day guy thrown into an extraodinary position. BTW, Total Recall is Arnold's best film. He actually tried to act, and the film was kind of a joke, but that mix of camp and seriousness makes it the classic that it is today. And it's got to be one of the most quatable films of all time, next to Predator of course.

I want the remake, if for no other reason than because the before Verhoeven, Cronenberg was attached to direct and he dd not have Swarzenegger in the lead. He had cast Richard Dreyfus. wrap your head around that. Total recall, directed by Cronenberg, starring Richard Dreyfuss. In a related tidbit, they interviewed Cronenberg after he watched Total Recall and asked him what he thought of Verhoeven's take on the material. He said he found it disturbingly violent. The interviewer responded, "come on. You invented exploding heads for crying out loud." He then said something that has stuck with me as a screen writer ever since. he said, "One murder, that has impact. Fifty murders? It's like rain. Why bother?"

You may cry…there will be no shame….I just never though theyd start remaking 90s films it just kinda crept up…then again should be be that surprised? After all what else is TDK than a Batman 89 remake and that was only the year b4 Total Recall (Ledger was fucking TEN YEARS OLD back then!! Imagine what a mind fuck that will have been for him when he was cast in TDK after seeing Nicolson as the big J only a few years b4)…I guess it wont be too long until an ABYSS remake or even a MATRIX remake. (Matrix is TEN YEARS OLD!! 10 FUCKING YEARS ALREADY!!)

Fuck you father time….your killing us all one day at a time…what is time anyway? I mean why dosnt everything stay as it is? Why is there time? There must be a way to stop it…I mean why does no one else seem to be worried? Time is gonna KILL YOU!! Don't you feel time gaining on you? ….It's like a predator; it's stalking you. Oh,you can try and outrun it with doctors, medicines, new technologies but in the end, time is going to hunt you down... and make the kill.

You know it never ceases to amaze me when someone dies and you hear about it from a friend or even a famous person dies and you hear on the news and everyone just goes..’oh well..it was his time’ well FUCK THAT!…ARE THEY FUCKING CRAZY?! The person is DEAD!! He/she aint coming back EVER!!…I mean EVER!! Even in a million years…and people just accept it like its normal!!! Jesus christ almighty DYING ISNT NORMAL!! And you know what the scary thing is? Theres probably no afterlife..no nice orderly heaven and hell, 70 virgins whatever…cos if you don’t remember anything before you were born then theres a good chance it’ll be the same after…fuck me the enormity of it all hits me harder every fucking day…I mean what the fuck are we gonna do?!

by CherryValance

09:12:39 AM
Seriously. Back in the day people used to do the same play over and over and over again because there were no recording devices. So you couldn't just watch Hamlet when you felt like it. But it's been 30 years now since normal people have had devices in their homes with which they could playback movies. So why do we need to remake anything when we can rent or buy the original? Hmm? It's like no one in Hollywood has one of these fantastical inventions. If they did, they would clearly see the waste of time, energy, and money that remakes are.

What else....Elvis has been dead 32 years now!!! Holy shit…plus he first burst on the scene 55 years ago now!! Yes you read that right FIFTY FUCKING FIVE YEARS AGO!!…not twenty five FIFTY FIVE!! ...to the best of my recollection, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale is a very short short story. In terms of concept - which is pretty much all there is to the story - Total Recall is a spot on adaptation. And it has Dick's absurd sense of humour dead-on as well. I'm sure that's the problem with it for anyone aged about 15 (the mental age of studio executives) - it must be gritty, realistic and humourless otherwise it's outdated and ready for a remake. Going semi-off topic, there's no need for this news to make you feel old. The fact that they are already remaking 90's movies just goes to show how ludicrous and cratively barren Hollywood has become.

by ABking

09:28:26 AM
TOTAL RECALL is such a well made Schwarzenegger/Verhoeven action film that I would HATE it if Arnie and Paul wanted to make a sequel today. This film needs NO sequel and it's better if they remake it than do a sequel. Don't get me wrong, it's way too early to make a sequel to this film (it came out in 1990, HELLO Moritz!) but if they have to remake/reboot/rethink this sci-fi masterpiece, this is one Arnie sequel I DON'T WANT! I bet some of you just shit your pants with that statement:) I would much rather Arnie and Verhoeven make the long delayed CRUSADE as one of Arnie's comebacks (along with THE EXPENDABLES of course). Arnie has better sequels to make like KING CONAN, PREDATOR 3 , TERMINATOR 5 and TRUE LIES 2. By the way, check out Clint from MOVIEHOLE's thoughts on remaking Total Recall here http://www.moviehole.net/20091 7940-total-remake-of-total-rec all

I have given up on Hollywood ever trying to make something original. Everything is based off something or has been done before, again with the remakes. I guess in this era of fiscal crisis, the risk factor is so great that original ideas are worthless, even though I hear it in the studios all the time, we want an original idea, but make it look like this. We are in a circle jerk of the non creative thought. What are we going to leave to the next generation? Another Total recall in ten more years? Another this another version of that? Hollywood pretends its doing art, well nobody repaints the mona lisa again and again, and calls it Mona Lisa 2. How about rewriting Moby Dick? The industry is called an industry for a reason, they might as well be making shoes, or jackets every year. Until the mad people take charge of the studios it will all be the same old thing again and again..a waste of an art form. excuse the rant, to much coffee this morning. Best to all.

One of the great things about Total Recall was it was an independent film with bankable hollywood star. Also great minds collaborated with Carolco because they were the it studio and did things their way for a short time of course. I don't think it will be any good if doesn't have the edge it requires.

One of my fav movies from my teen years. I agree w/ Mullah Omar...use the books title, do NOT use or mention Total Recall. Adapt the book, have no similarities w/ the Arnold movie and I MIGHT be ok w/ this. It'll probably still be nowhere as good as the original. Not even close. No chance.

Short story vs movie
by #1 Zero
Feb 26th, 2009
11:19:09 AM
The short story is very different from the shwarz movie. It's more of a mindbender when the end is a new beginning and so on. More like a twilight zone episode than anything else. Also I thought the production company Halcyion which is doing and owns the rights to the Terminator franchise also owned all of Philip K Dick's work, so I don't know where this "Original Films" came in. But something for someone to research somewhere I guess.

by slone13
Feb 26th, 2009

It's going to be an adaption of Dick's "I Can Remember It For You Wholesale". Huge difference.

It's like how The Last Man on Earth and Omega Man are both adaptions of "I am Legend".

Most people have never read "I Can Remember It For You Wholesale", much less even heard of it. So it's easier to say it's a Total Recall remake.

01:21:27 PM
The 'tragedy' is that this 'new generation' you speak of has NOTHING new unto itself and it's pathetic. It's pretty specious to pretend that only remakes of remakes can keep creatives employed. If the industry keeps stripmining itself it will will spiral inward on itself. People that care about the industry should be concerned with that. One movie isn't a big deal but this is just another one in a long chain that doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon.

When I was reading it, I had to keep checking the cover... 'No, it's not a kids' version'... Read some more. Check *underneath* the dust jacket; nope. Definitely the official novelisation. It reads like a fucking child wrote it. I was so utterly alarmed by the standard of the book, that I went down to the local charity shop and picked up another Piers Anthony book - don't ask me what it's called - and it was also fucking dire. You can say all you want about Lucas being a shitty hack who can't write... at all, but at least he had the grace to get Alan Dean Foster to do the novels. Fuck Piers Anthony.
The original is not suitable as a film
by harmil
Feb 26th, 2009
01:28:23 PM
The original doesn't work as a film. You would have to re-design the story around a screenplay, not just adapt it. That's what the first movie did. I could see a very different treatment of the story as a film, but it wouldn't be any more faithful to the original. Essentially, the first movie started with the idea that the short story would introduce the film, and it went from there. You can go an awful lot of directions from that starting point.
Just rewatched the original for fun...

Enough already. TOTAL RECALL is notable only for a pre-fame Sharon Stone role as Ahnold's backstabbing wife and really bad animatronics when Arnie and his love interest are about to die at the end when they're exposed on the surface of Mars.

Other than that, it's a mediocre Swarzenegger action flick unworthy of more than a second viewing, and completely undeserving of being remade.

if they remake they need to do a different take on it - maybe adapt the 'Wholesale' novel - like they were gonna do b4 it became an Arnold action movie..... DO NOT do a falt out reamke of arnies Total Recall and cast some doofus like Shia and make it PG13 (they will though..you just know it)

I wonder how that could have slipped Paul back in the day and if they are planning to fix it some day.

Feb 26th, 2009
07:40:55 PM

The hero gets beaten to a pulp and kicked in the nuts repeatedly. He nearly gets shot to death several times and has to use a body as a bullet shield at one point. He meets a beautiful woman whom he can't remember. He gets propositioned by a three-breasted hooker and mind-read by a mooncalf. He has to tear a bug out of his head. And to top it all off, he can't even be sure if everything he's experiencing is real or not.

Now if that's boring, then what the hell is your idea of exciting? Dropping a safe on his head?

And any notion of a remake is ridiculous. Whoever greenlit this piece of shit idea should be dumped out the nearest airlock.

I LOVE Total Recall...it is along with Predator...are epitome of late 80s early 90's sci-fi tinged action adventure movies. Huge budgets (for the time), Top Notch effects (for the time...and look at all those practicals!), a decent story and mega star driven. THIS IS POPCORN CINEMA at its finest. From what I remember MIB2 ripped it off for Tommy Lees storyline, something like, he goes to Rekall and they find a memory of him being visited by aliens and he'e a saviour for the human race or something?

Anyway Totall Recall is Total Awesome they should just change the name if they want to use the original story, also Verhovan says on the TR commentry Minority Report was going to be a sequal with them mutants who told Arnies fortune being the Pre-cogs, and Arnie clearing his name, now that would have been good.

Why? The first one didn't have fart jokes?

I don't understand why they would remake such an iconic film.

Of course it was all a dream/memory implant. It's not just the "blue skies on mars" comment, they even showed his Martian girlfriend up on the monitor in the Recall center. He's permanently stuck in his schizoid embolism event at the end.
This is a bad idea

I'm convinced I just posted this headline on the Richard Pryor biopic thread aswell! This is a seriously bad idea, for the same reason that a Robocop remake is a bad idea - ie: they don't need it!! This was Verhoeven at his prime in Hollywood, and I do not think that the chase for the easy dollar (which this current spate of remakes most assuredly represent) is any reason to tarnish such classics. What the future might hold makes me tremble - a remake of Blade Runner? Jaws? Dr. No? Citizen Kane? Leave it be guys, and finance some original films instead, eh?

The mind-fuck scene with the "doctor" trying to convince Quaid he's stuck in a dream. And a simple bead of sweat seals his doom. It plays out just long enough to make you think the "doctor" may be real.

And yea, the landscape is obviously modelwork, but nowadays we can marvel that people actually assembled it in bits and pieces, instead of bits and bytes.

Where the f-ck did you get that line from? It isn't part of the story, you're mixing things up. And skimn, the doctor IS real (a real doctor in his head trying to help him); the sweat was part of the memory implant but Quaid mistakenly thought it proved he was in the real world.

You've got it all backwards, man. It IS a dream. It's all right there in that scene and I've got the direct quotation to prove it!

"In your mind I'll be dead, and with no one to guide you out, you'll be stuck in permanent psychosis. The walls of reality will come crashing down. One minute, you're the savior of the Rebel cause, next thing you know you'll be Cohaagen's bosom buddy. You'll even have fantasies about alien civilizations as you requested, but in the end, back on Earth you'll be lobotomized!"

And what happens after Quaid blows Edgemar away? The walls literally explode. Later it is revealed that he and Cohaagen ARE friends and the alien shit shows up for the big climax. Then there's those last lines where he and Melina discuss the possibility that it was all a dream.

You're right, though. He offers no proof that he is an accredited doctor. We are never shown a license or degree. I'll give you that.

It Could be a dream or it could be real

..which is what Verhovan was aiming for,

personally I think its real as he's says in the commentry thats why they picked Arnie for the role instead of Richard Dreyfuss and Bridges, because fans would be more inclined to believe in Arnie.

And don't forget they had a planned sequal which was going to be Minority Report so how could Quaid be back if he was lobotamized?

I think Verhoeven leaves it open to interpretation

I know the head of Recall sets it up in the beginning of the movie selling the Ego Trip, "You kill the bad guys, save the planet and get the girl", and in the end even Quaid questions if it's all a dream. The beauty is that Verhoeven leaves it open for us to decide. And both sides of the question are concievably correct. Thats what makes it unique for your standard sci-fi actioner. And...a remake could never touch the original, and anyone who says it's boring or dated is a moron.

it wouldnt suprise that they are going to relaunch a lot film franchises. We all know its true. Freddie is getting rebooted and so is jason. Aronofski is doing Robocop. Big budget Remakes for all 1980s movies are on the cards. Except Legend, Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. If you think I am kidding. There is accorrding to er steve Guttenberg, a new police academy film in the works and he is in it. God help us all. I hope its just a threat. Police academy 9. no thanks.
Hmmm maybe..

PKD wrote cerebral, challenging sci-fi. If this is an adaptation and development of his original ideas it might just work. If it is a remake of the Governator's work we're screwed. Total Recall is a classic of its time, fondly remembered perhaps by sci-fi buffs who saw it at the time on the silver. Total Recall '10 will be a disaster. "We remember it..." as a new film could be pulled off.
Wasn't this a TV series too for Showtime?
