How much Sam Jackson will make will test on whether or not he'll take it. Besides, 9 films is job security, but it will identify him as Nick Fury more than it would as Mace Windu or anything.

One of the fun things about being a Marvel reader was the way Nick seemed to have a finger in every pie and could pop up in virtually any hero's title. With this deal, Marvel's films could well be able to duplicate the same effect.

It shows Marvel is commited, at least this far, tot eh quality of their work. And if we throw them under the bus no matter what the do guess who gets thrown under the bus at the end of the day? Us, when we have to suffer through awful comic book films. THis year we got Iron Man, Dark Knight, Incredible Hulk (STILL waiting for the directors cut of that) and the FUCKING WATCHMEN comes out in a week. Let's applaud this incredible forward trajectory. Oh and remember to skip WOlverine, seriously, avoid it like the plague for what they've done to the character and the X-Men world. It's...about...sending...a messaaage.
BTW: Rourke Playing Himself Would Make A Good Riddler...
by Media Messiah
Feb 25th, 2009
05:47:40 PM
...or even Penguin. You saw Rourke at the Oscars or in his interview with Barbara Walters post Oscars? That is how a Batman villain should be played...just straight and real...no over the top drama or silliness. Mickey Rourke is a Batman villain come to life by just being himself. I'm glad that Marvel took a pass on him by trying to stiff Rourke with a low ball paycheck of 750,000...because that leaves him open to better offers, in better movies. Hopefully Chris Nolan will cast him in the next Batman film...and finally make a good or great Batman movie.

I would simply tell Rourke to play himself, not a cartoonish villain...just show-up on the set and be Mickey Rourke...don't act...and that will be a great performance in itself.

A cynical fad to make character edgy at that. Hopefully Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar and their horrid influence on mainstream comics will soon go the way of the dinosaur before they can't a chance to rob every last ounce of dignity the genre has. But even besides the Ultimate Nick Fury, Jackson as an actor has plenty of gravitas and edge to make him right for the role. Would I rather have Kurt Russell, yes absolutely, but the ideal doesn't work out all the time and I think Jackson is certainly up there with actors I wouldn't mind seeing instead.

I think they would leave him out of thor and possibly cap. Since both of those are suppose to be period peices. I'd much rather he stay out of hulk too. He'll be in Ironman and Avengers for sure. I'd rather he not be the Nick Fury of the comics. He could quickly become a cheap ass plot point for most of these films just as in the comics.

That's crazy but in reality how many of that 9 will be nothing more than extended cameos like in Iron Man? I actually think it would be better if he only appeared like that until a supporting role in Avengers the staring in a S.H.E.I.L.D. movie, keep Nick Fury behind the scenes and in the shadows until then.

Since there was nothing in Nick Fury's background that mandates his ethnicity, I'm fine with Sam. We know who Fury is, but the average filmgoer doesn't. You need someone to convey the essence of Fury - a bad ass mother fucker, and in that, Sam works perfectly (Russell would have been good too, about a decade ago). For those criticizing the Ultimate U as trying to be edgy, that was just the Ultimates. Ult Spidey, Ult XMen, etc were no more "edgy" than usual (unless they changed dramatically after I stopped reading them).
So Marvel are just REALLY tough negotiators...

I have GOT to GIT me wunna DEES! So anyhoo, with Marvel's good-to-shitty movie ratio being what it is, I can only see Sam Jackson's continued participation as helping. Those shitty Fantastic Four movies have already so badly shredded what little connective tissue there was between Marvel's movies and its comics continuity that I am not going to weep over a non-caucasian Nick Fury. Jackson is often the best thing about any number of bad movies he's been in, and I have to think a cameo from him in, say, crap like Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Hulk, X3, and either Punisher, would have made those flicks ever so slightly more watchable. The Fantastic Four movies are lost causes though. Complete garbage. Where is President Obama's trillion dollar Fantastic Four movie bail out?

by YackBacker
Feb 25th, 2009
06:42:42 PM
If all the propaganda I've been reading here at AICN is to be trusted, then those penny-pinchers at MARVEL would never spend money on talent, let alone commit to a 9-pic option for one actor, unless they are receiving some economic benefit. This deal doesn't make sense on its surface, given past behavior as well as rudimentary economics (why would any studio sign any actor to a 9-pic deal?). The terms of this option contract must favor the studio somehow.

I think several things when I see your handle and even a few are kind. Yet one thing about you that I think I know very well is that you know film very well.

I'm intrigued that you wait in anticipation for the director's cut of Incredible Hulk. Not the "unedited" or some other modifier, but "Director's Cut." You are known to choose your words. Any particular reason for that? I ask not only because I'm a comic geek and the green guy is my favorite, but because Norton must have sniffed something in the material and it just 'felt' like there was much more bubbling beneath the theatrically released surface. There should've been way more with Leonard. The deleted scenes on the current DVD release suggest this, but I know there must be way more material lying around.

As for Wolverine -- I hear you too well. Only I ran pale after seeing Singer's freshman run. These never were the X-Men and I laugh at anyone's attempts to explain how they were "faithfully" adapted. A too-handsome Ryan Reynolds in a red wife beater is the progeny of Singer's initial vision, as was everything Ratner brought to the table.

A 78 year old Nick Fury???
by Orbots Commander
Feb 25th, 2009
09:43:31 PM
Okay, let's say SLM starts making Nick Fury this year and that from here on makes nothing BUT Nick Fury movies. Now, consider that normal pre-production/production/post for most studio movies is around 2 years. That's 9 movies X 2= 18 years. So if Jackson is 60 now, he could conceivably be playing Nick Fury at 78 by his last contracted film. Crazy. I hope Marvel has a good insurance policy.

since Marvel's producing their own films now. It's to their benefit to market and grow all their properties under a single Marvel Universe and Nick Fury (and I'm sure other elements from the Marvel catalog) will help to create that continuity. Sort of like the Star Wars and Star Trek universes. Branding/marketing, mind share, cross promotion etc all benefit tremendously. You don't just go to see (or buy toys or play games of) "Iron Man" you go to see "A Marvel Film". If they do this right and create high quality work, Marvel might become a juggernaut. Of course, that's a big "if".

Marvel was reminded once again, with this upcoming blockbuster, that making a serious commitment to quality isn't a waste... it's an INVESTMENT that pays off in spades when it comes to making profits. You CAN please both the fanbase AND the general moviegoing public. Just don't treat your properties like a JOKE and people will pay to see films based on comics, whether it's Blade, 300, Watchmen or even THOR (hopefully).

Your insistence on superheroes of color exclusivity smacks of 80's Super Friends stereotype opportunism, 90's Marvel character studies, and 00's DC reimagination.

To you, the only way to make a Lantern movie interesting is to focus on John Stewart. Sure, that's 'one' way. But it's not 'the' way. And there have been plenty of black heroes on film before now.

How may other ethnic identities have enjoyed screentime by comparison? Considering there were two Hulk movies just this decade alone, green people are better represented in superhero films than brown and yellow people.

The above aside, even if you are right about the service "slanting minority" as you mention -- Sam's Nick would've had to enlist WAY many years before now to reach the level he is at, thus falling within an alleged minority statistic according to your estimate.

The 90's are over, bacci40. Race isn't chic anymore. It's incidental now. And I suspect others feel the swame. You may have heard we elected a black president recently.

So, would that mean that Marvel will be shooting for a uniform tone in all of its upcoming movies? Would they throw Fury into a kid-friendly superhero comedy and into a gritty, violent, action-oriented movie?

Nine movies is going to be tough to squeeze Nick Fury into. This is either complete bullshit, or just a way to get fanboys off their back about the revolving door of Iron Man casting. Think about it...what projects have come down the line that Sam Jackson has said "No" to? Casting Jackson is the easy part.

This proves nothing about Marvel's "commitment" to quality francise moviemaking.

why is this so hard to understand?

It's called building a franchise, people. These 9 films are going to be mostly cameos - Capt. America, Thor, Iron Man II that's 3 right there. Throw in another Hulk film, 2 Avengers films (where one assumes he'll have more of a role), that's at least 6, and most within the next few years. It's called an option for a reason. Who knows how many movies there will be. But it shows they're serious about some consistency. And I don't think anyone who draws up a contract gives a shit about 'fanboy reaction'. A contract is a contract. Looks like a committment to me.
the reason why the Ultimate Universe works

Feb 26th, 2009

especially, for film adaptations. It's not because of some of the random changes with characters that don't do much for the storytelling (some work - for example Ultimate Venom is a much cooler story than the meteor rock from space origin in the regular universe, the one that SM3 unfortunately used, while others don't - mostly in Fantastic Four and X-Men, and the ones people have mentioned). But I will put Ultimate Spider-Man up against the regular Spider-Man any day (especially the Brand New one) - it has always been a consistently better title with more 3-dimensional characterizations, etc. But the real reason why the UU is a good model for these movies is how they all fit together. I love that Nick Fury was a central character in Ultimate Spider-Man, and that so much of what happened with the Hulk and Spidey and their villains were part of failed super-soldier programs, that it all connects. And while I admit the regular Nick Fury is a much more badass character, the UU Nick Fury story makes sense in that universe and it's a good one (read Ultimate Origins) so I have absolutely no problem with Sam Jackson and the plan to have a connected Marvel universe in the films. I just hope they can get Norton back in the mix.

...how this is bad thing in any way.

If you want your Nick Fury to be white then you have your comic books.

If you want yor Nick Fury to look rather like Samuel L. Jackson then you have what is left of the Ultimate universe after it's been Jeph'd.

If you want some badassmuthafucka to play Nick Fury in a highly stylised version of the character then, of course, look to the movies.

He has charisma and is a NAME and that is the bottom line with most films. He is bankable. By casting Jackson it might mean that lesser known and more suitable actors are given a shot at more dynamic roles. After all, he's not a lead...

Seems like a god thing all round unless your reasons for naysaying Jules is ocularcentric. In which case shame on you.

by Leafar the Lost
Feb 26th, 2009

I am willing to bet that Sam Jackson caved in and took the low offer. Marvel could have cast 10-15 other name worthy black actors to replace Sam as Nick Fury. If you add white actors, it would be closer to 100. Mickey Rourke should do fine as...whatever he is playing in Iron-Man 2, but it is only a matter of time before he self-destructs again. He will probably go on a drug and drinking binge due to the death of Loki, one of his dogs. Those dogs are the only friends he has left.

Sam Jackson as Nick Fury? The most obvious is that he's too old. The character was, if I recall, a grizzled white guy. Now, EVERY comic character from the 60's and early 70's (that I remember) was white, so if your gonna be a purist, they all should be white, else you should be open to the idea of Nick Cage playing, "The Black Panther!". OK, I'm not hung up on that, but if your gonna pick a black guy to play this character, don't pick Jackson or Smith, as they are both so hopelessly typcast at this point. Give some relative unknown a chance at defining this part. Someone who is believable as a hard case, not someone who just shouts out how bad they are.

The Marvel produced films are all in line with the Marvel Ultimates line or are a derivative of it in their origins as seen by the mash original and ultimates Iron man origin. In the Ultimates line Nick is not only black, but Sam Jackson gave Marvel his permission to use HIS likeness for the character. So, in the Ultimates land Sam IS Nick Fury. Now if they had gone with an older white guy I would have loved to have seen Kurt Russell, as a fifty-something Fury, but the character does need to be in his late forties early fifties at least to be a Col. and to have had the experience to be the head of an agency like SHIELD. A thirty something Nick just wouldn't jive.

Dr. Sauch wrote that "Leafar the Lost hates everyone, and thats the gist!" He then wrote the following,"eat a dick. rourke and jackson are awesome." By his statements, I have to conclude that he is so attracted to Mickey Rourke and Sam Jackson that he wants to "eat a dick", which is a slang term for oral sex. Now, to his other point, I do not hate everyone. I love all of my fans, including Dr. Sauch, and I will try to get him an autographed picture. As far as the word "gist" goes, he must be talking about gastrointestinal stromal tumor or GIST, which is a rare tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. I have no idea why he brought that up, but I am assuming that he either has a tumor in his stomach or is afraid of getting getting one.

Take your cues from "Truth:RWB" and cast Will Smith as Isaiah Bradley as the "First Avenger" and _______ _______ as Steve Rogers who picks up the mantle of Cap in a showing of racial solidarity during WWII and during a heightened period of civil unrest in the US.

You get a decent compelling American story, Mr. July 4th to hold down box office sales, and the white bread Captain America that fanboys would be crying about.

According to the book? No. I understand that.

But it's pretty clear that the books are not 100% canon regarding to the film adaptations.

But for storytelling purposes, I would flip the chronology.

Plus it would be a little more in line with the thinking of the day to test the unproven serum on Black soldiers before administering the perfected serum to White soldiers.

Makes for better storytelling, IMO.

but when he's directed with some restraint he's pretty great. Except for Mace Windu. That was just bad writing. And this reeks of the same casting mentality. What makes him a good Nick Fury aside from the fact that he was the basis for UM Fury? Aside from him wanting and asking for the role? That doesn't guarantee a good performance. He had like...two lines in Iron Man? The only thing I'm looking forward to with this casting is his chemistry with RDJ in Iron Man 2. Other than that I fully expect him to sleepwalk in every cameo.

The reason none of these characters were black originally is because there weren't any black heroes in the '60s when the Marvel universe was created. We were lucky to see a black character get any type of recurring role (I'm thinking of Bill Foster before he was Black Goliath). So when you say characters have to stay the same race in the movie as they were in the comic, what you're really saying is that all superheroes have to be white. Please. Our country's grown up a little since the '60s. I think we can handle a black Nick Fury, especially if he's played by someone as cool as Sam Jackson. What is it with racist fanboys? They crawl out of the woodwork for shit like this...
