I'm hoping that the theatrical will be great. I mean, it runs at 163 minutes, so it might not feel like alot of things have been left out. BUT this is the cut that I have been wanting to see, since it could really capture the greatness of the GN. And the reason that this got greenlite, is because the film is already sold out with it's IMAX screenings. :)

If you miss seeing this in IMAX, even though it costs $3-5 more than a normal movie, you are cheating yourself my friend. I have a state-of-the-art home theater as well, and cannot wait for the 205 minute version, but I'll be damned if its the same as seeing it in IMAX. And if it has any scenes that were shot using actual IMAX camera (dark knight had like 20minutes of scense shot like that), then you are REALLY missing out. of course, if you don't have an IMAX near you, disregard me entirely lol.

Comic book movies should never run two and a half hours ... much less three hours and 10 minutes! Prediction: BIG opening weekend, 50-60 percent plunge on the second weekend, final box office take under $100 million. This is the "Hellboy" of superhero flicks. Geeshed on by the geeks, met with sighs by the rest of humanity.

"The Dark Knight" was 155 minutes long, and it became the second highest grossing film of all time. The only thing that "Watchmen" has going against it, is that it's rated R, and it might be a bit too weird and unconventional for a mainstream audience. I mean my god, this film has a big blue penis, one of the heroes is a murderer and a rapist, and the other superhero kills millions of innocent people, to save the world. So it will have a HUGE weekend, but I don't know if it's going to have a great run.
So The Black Freighter is only 15 minutes long?

THERE IS NO SQUID. Get over it. Look, I love the Squid, but what's the big deal with having it in the film. What works better in one medium, won't really work in another. The Squid works in the GN, because of the emotional impact that came afterwords. When in reality, Veidt's explanation didn't make any sense at all. Only made comic-book sense, and that's why it worked so perfectly well. Alan Moore was making commentary on comic-books, and idiotic plans by super villains. But Alan Moore added alot more to it, by showing the results of Veidt's plan. It was horrifying, tragic, and devastating to look at. But if it was shown on screen, it might too jarring for people, and the explanation still wouldn't make any sense. So they changed it, and attempted to make it seem a bit more logical for people who have never read the GN. And let's face it, the squid would just look like another great special effect, in a film that is full of great special effects. :)
Still would've rather seen this as a mini-series...

If you think that you might not be able to sit through a 2 and a half hour comic book movie, just stay home, turn on MTV and pop some ritalin in. I can understand the squid confusing the 'average common thicko redneck'. As far as the flying ship shaped like an owl and the big blue man with the penis, people will accept that. But the robots changing into cars and trucks, punching each other in their robot faces, that's not good content for a blockbuster in my humble opinion. Don't even get me started about Batman. I agree, but I don't think "Watchmen" will have a great run at the box office. It will have a big weekend, and it might make a HUGE profit. But I don't think it's going to become the highest grossing R-rated film ever. It might be just end up on the top three highest grossing R rated films, but that's about it. And I can sit through a 4 hour version of this film, if I had the chance. It just looks beautiful. :)

I love the sarcasm. But it's not the Squid that will fuck with people, it's the explanation. And let's face it, it might feel like it came straight out of left field, and the explanation simply doesn't make sense. But it works within the comic-book, because Alan Moore is making commentary on comic-books. He shows how ridiculous Veidt's plan is, but makes it truly effective, by showing the impact of Veidt's plan. On the big screen, it might not come across so well. So it was changed, in order to make alot more sense. And the Squid is not in any of the script drafts, and there have been ALOT more changes to "Watchmen" in the past. Just be grateful that Snyder was willing to faitfully adapt the look of the GN, instead of putting the story and characters in the 21st century.

It's called making money. And WB was afraid that people wouldn't be able to sit through a 3+ hour film, that is a hard R-rated film. Forget the fact that many people still don't know who the superheroes are. The 3 hour cut is for the fans, for the people who might love the theatrical cut, and to make alot more money. Plain and simple.

In addition to director's commentary, there will be the option to listen to Alan Moore and Harland Ellison discuss how terrible every single scene is. During the end credits, they wander off to such topics as Dianetics, Zippy the Clown, and who between the two if them is actually the MOST misunderstood. It culminates with the two of them beating one another to death with severed arms after Moore calls Ellison as Sci-Fi writer, and Ellison calls Moore a glorified Coney Island tattoo artist.

I thought it was pretty straightforward. Dr. Manhattan allows research into inter-dimensional travel. Aliens detect the research. Alien uses our technology to breach space-time and invade earth. But it didn't go as planned, so alien splatters. Must prepare for future attacks. What doesn't make sense there? What REALLY doesn't make sense is the world uniting with the USA to fight Dr. Manhattan after Dr. Manhattan decides to nuke everyone.

Jon/Doc Manhattan is THE American in many ways--a symbol of American superiority and its greatest weapon. And if an American weapon malfunctions and kills shitloads of people worldwide, whose fault is it? Who will the world blame?

Doc Manhattan Bombs = FAIL.

I think replacing the squid with something of equal potency in its proxy is fine--a legitimate choice. But the logic behind this change just doesn't hold water. Hopefully this film adaptation will prove me wrong.

Maybe it's cos I have been reading everyone creaming about it on here for a year or so, so I decided to read it and it didn't live up to what you poeple built it up to be. Maybe at 30 I am too old for comics. Maybe it's out-dated. Maybe the charactors are stupid and the story is not as complex as people made it out to be. I watched the trailers before I read the comic and thought it looked really good. Just wasn't as good as I expected. The black freigther parts especially boring.

The people that make the noise about the squid being cut are overstating the importance of the squid. If the squid was in the movie, they would pick out some other deviance from source to complain about. They WANTED to hate this movie, and have retroactively chosen the lack of squid for the reason.

It's compounded by the fact that Snyder has made an adaption that is far, far, closer to the book than ANYBODY would have aniticipated. The squid is really all the haters have to cling to, and so they are desperately, loudly, clinging.

IMAX film is a large-format cannister film camera. It uses a regular film stock that is much greater in size than normal film. It is Higher than High-Def, as it is the highest resolution analog film out there. For instance, if you have a blu-ray, you have The Dark Knight blu ray. That blu-ray has 6 scense shot in IMAX, where it is not really widescreen and the image is much 'larger' than it normally appears (the opening of the dark knight was shot in IMAX). Anyway, this also means much larger screens. The IMAX near me has a 72 foot high screen. MUUCH larger than a normal movie screen. and the science center in Pittsburgh has an OmniMAX screen, which is a 120foot domed IMAX screen. Anyway, its the only way to see movies these days. Especially with the resurgence of 3D (clear glasses instead of red and blue lenses), seeing things on an IMAX screen is worth making the trip instead of staying home and watching things on blu ray.

that and 3D lol. If you have a 120hz home theater display, you can make most current generation video-games into true 3D (google: nvidia glasses), the new crop of 3D movies blows my blu ray home theater away. WHAT THE FUCK IS SO HARD FOR YOU PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE NEW DOC-ENDING1?!?! He WAS an american weapon, but if he nukes AMERICA (which he will) ALONG with other cities in other countries, the WORLD WILL UNITE TO FIGHT HIM... he becomes a COMMON threat. Also, it is actually quite a smart ending, when you think about the fact that America created the Atomic bomb, and it could be that same technology that could destroy our country. Like in iron man--he feels guilty when he realizes his weapons are being used by terrorists. Its a very appropriate ending given the state the world is in, and the constant threat that weapons we have created could be turned on us. But some of you are FUCKING IDIOTS because you can't realize that if AMERICA GETS BOMBED, AMERICA IS ALSO A VICTIM... JUST AS MUCH OF A VICTIM AS ANYONE ELSE WHO GETS NUKED... jesus, and these are the same people who are so analytical about the comic book and read into the subtext so much... if you guys can do THAT, why can't you understand a very simple concept that is the new alternate ending???

HOWEVER, we don't know if DOC makes the decision to go nuke-happy on everyone's asses, (come to think about that, i could see that as a its always sunny in philadelphia title: the gang goes nuke happy on everyone's asses) but i digress, we don't KNOW that doc decides to do this himself... I understand no squid, but i find it hard to believe that Veidt will have no hand in the destruction at the end... i mean, i can actually understand people who are obsessed with the squid, i really can, but i will NEVER be able to understand, and would be furious, if the main bad-guy isn't behind the destruction at the end... that would be a HUGE dealbreaker in my book, and would make even less sense for the average viewer than the squid, and that's saying ALOT...

Hence making THE WHOLE GLOBE DWELLING POPULATION (Including the Irish)hold hands together in unison and peace! It's the only way it can confirm him as a bad / good guy, his character would be worthless otherwise. WORTHLESS I TELLS THEE!!!

420 Boylston St, people may be counting their chickens before they come home to roost in regards to this movie, HOWEVER, i hope you're in all the AVATAR threads saying the same damn thing, because we know how incredible the source material is for watchmen, we've seen the trailers which make it look like a visually stunning movie (and yes, slow mo is perfect for a COMIC BOOK movie, because it gives you a little longer look at some of the best framed shots like a comic does) and its rated R. That's enough for me to get excited and get my hopes up. Avatar praise is insane considering how little of it we've seen (and that's an understatement)

The average age of people who buy and read comic books is 27. I'll ask you this--assuming you've read the GN, and for the sake of argument, lets say you have kids. If you think comics are for younger people, how old would your kids have to be for you to let them read watchmen? I know it won't change your opinion of the book and the medium, but Watchmen changed the entire industry of comic books (and also dark knight returns, although i don't feel it holds up, and i also feel that is sucks, even though people praise it) it made comics for an older crowd. The fact of the matter is, today, comics are for sophmore highschool to mid-twenties people and then the loyalists who continue to read comics as they get older. Its true, though, Watchmen should really be read twice, and is better the second time around... but actually, in your defense, Watchmen isn't for everybody, but it is PERFECT for alot of people, and because it honestly is perfect for so many people, they have a hard time believing other people don't see what they see. I think its almost perfect (nothing achieves true perfection) but I do believe you if you felt it was boring... but there's a good chance you will really like the movie. I love watchmen as much as the next guy, all you huge fans, and without watchmen i would not be the huge comics fan I am today, but you do need to realize that Watchmen, AND comics in general, do just not work with some people... you can't accuse people who weren't that into it of not reading it... although it is fair to ask for specific reasons why they hated it--if they can't answer that question, then ignore them, because then the person is clearly a troll.

One of the possible problems with Snyders climax is that Big Blue Explosions might not cut it as suitably shocking, horrific or strange.

However.. IF you add to this the Intrinsic Field subtractor as a secondary desctructive "fallout" of the "Bombs", that exterminates any lifeform within it's "ground zero" with a similar horrific effect to that which tore Osterman to pieces, on a grand scale, then that might just push it into the realm of shock and horror needed.

We'll need to wait and see of course.

The only part of what I've seen SO FAR that has excited me (after all that's what promotional material is supposed to do) is the last trailer. Someone mentioned that the clips look like there from a sitcom and I agree. That kind of visual composition works in the comic as Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore were trying to create a 'what would superheroes look like in the real world' but now we have a cinema audience whose just watched (in comic adaptations alone) Hulk, Iron Man, Dark Knight, Hellboy 2, The Spirit and Wanted and despite varying quality are all visually stimulating. The way Watchmen is shot would indeed suit a TV series better. As for the Jon Vs. Squid ending regardless of how Jon is set up to be would a godlike being use nukes? We see he deconstruct tanks and build glass castles and so on, without really thinking about it. Blowing stuff up seems a little strange for his M.O. As for the Squid looking silly... No. I point you to how awesome the plant god looked in Hellboy 2. Give it similar lighting, show it in segments, a mangled eye here a beak there don't tell me that this http://scienceblogs.com/zooil logix/squid%20Promachoteuthis% 20sulcus.jpg or this http://photography.nationalgeo graphic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Sh ared/StaticFiles/Photography/I mages/Content/giant-squid-clos e-up-760231-lw.jpg couldn't be made to be significantly nastier looking. The ending feels like Snyder read the comic then about half way through guessed the ending, got it wrong then thought his version worked better.

But to clarify, I am NOT attacking people who are angry the squid isn't in, I thought i made that clear, but maybe i didn't. I'm pissed off at the people who seem to think that because DOC is connected to the ultimate destruction, the world will see it as america's fault, and then attack america. That arugment makes NO SENSE because America will be attacked. As i said: its like another country saying "oh, a nuke blew off in new york city... they invented the nuke, serves them right... now because they invented the nuke we must attack them" it makes NO SENSE. I am not in love with the new ending, nor am i in love with the squid, I can see both sides argument, but i cannot for the life of me understand why people will blame america if america itself is attacked... if many cities are attacked, either directly or indirectly from DOC, then the issue the world faces is how do they stop the destruction from continuing. That's just logic.

I like the sound a longer version of the movie with actual movie footage, hence the 190 minute cut. But I dunno about that 205 minute cut with black freighter spliced in. interesting concept I know, but will it have little Bernie reading the comic, zoom in over his shoulder and suddenly it's an animated movie? shouldn't it be more like those motion comic dealies? or will little Bernie be watching it on a small TV at Big Bernie's newstand? does that make sense? or will the splices be shown with no context, referring to neither bernie big or little?

The more I think about it, the more I think I'll take the black freighter on the side. unless of course the director's cut is put on the the Blu Ray with the option of either of the long cuts, that'll be cool.

So what do you think? Theatrical cut DVD for August, Director's cut super gift set edition this November or December I suppose?

Rorshach's Journal...inside is evidence that Veidt was behind the attack on New York but it doesn't mention the nature of it because Rorshach didn't know at the time of writing.

So we get to Antarctica and Veidt's all "we need a common threat blah blah blah" and we learn that he was working on creating an alien to attack New York to unite the world and then Dan is all "We'll stop you" and Veidt is like "you don't have to because in the end I realised that the whole Squid idea was pretty lame"

And Rorschach is all "didn't go through with it. Saw sense."

And Veidt is like "no I just had Jon here nuke the place...20 minutes ago...even though he was on Mars"

And Jon is like "technically I was on Mars, here and New York at the same time"

And Dan is like "Dude that's some twilight zone shit right there."

And Rorshack is all "Those missing people. The lab here. Killed for nothing. No squid. Entire journal useless."

And so the final scene is Rorschach sneaking into to the newspaper office to make some quick changes to the journal

"Must change. Otherwise plot incoherent."

He looks over to see a fat guy eating a donut, dripping down onto his smiley face t-shirt.

"Could try New York Times instead."

Rorschach leaves with the journal.

As I was writing the above post, something occured to me. Doesn't Jon say that he is leaving Earth behind?

So if he is responsible and then he leaves...what's the world united against? Yes, with the Squid there is no actual threat beyond the initial attack since the Squid was man made, but in the minds of world leaders it could be a vanguard for an all out invasion.

I suppose it could be a case of the world uniting to prepare in case Jon ever comes back but it seems hollow.

It wasn't meant to be serious. I know the change is to make the world think Jon was responsible even though he wasn't.

The problem though is that a change like that has repercussions for the entire story. Everything from the Comedians death to Rorschach's journal is affected by that change. Plus, does Manhattan care enough to help Ozy create the new generator? I mean he fucks off to Mars pretty quickly and before that he is just going through the motions with no real connection to humanity anymore.

Frankly I'm not a massive fan of Watchmen, I actually think the novel is good but overrated and for the movie I'm looking to be entertaineed even if it's not completely faithful. But I can understand why so many people are pissed.

I don't think that there is any shortage of bad parents that will ignore the "R" Rateing.

There used to be a real cool haunted house that was run in my city for charity every Holloween. It was great, scary as hell.

I saw a mother, granted she was in her late teens or early twenties take a child that could not have been more than two years old into that thing.

The security guys at the door spent several minutes trying to talk her out of it. She would not listen to them. Personally if I was the security guy I would not have even let her in. About 90 seconds after our group got inside the haunted house the kid starts screaming like it had just been knifed. The poor little thing was terrified. The staff at the haunted house finally got their shit together and escorted her out. But I think that kid is still probably a bit fucked up by that experience to this day.

...why the squid itself is important.

Spoiler. Even now, spoiler.

It's not the squid that's important. It's the massacre. Why it needs to be a got-dang squid is irrelevant. Anything that could destroy the city and have the blame put elsewhere is the point of the sequence. Right now, I simply don't understand why, other than simply having a workman-like attachment to the graphic novel, the squid is the thing that people need. But I'd like to understand.

I'm not understanding in relation to the squid, is in the book writers and artists were "recruited" to create this fantastic creature (one of those writers/artists was involved with the Black Freighter side story). So if they don't have the creature, how are the writers/artists relevant to the story then?

You morons defending this idiot hack director who cuts out the main antagonist in the climax, THE CLIMAX, of the whole story are really a bunch of mindless sheep. How can you say the haters are clinging to it because it is actually unimportant to teh story. Then why would Alan Moore add a giant squid destroying the planet at the end of his masterpiece. THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE YOUR INANE THOUGHTS. Of course it is important which is not to say the film won't be good, but it won't be faithful that is clear and it also won't be supported by its creator Alan Moore. Stupid fucking idiots...

Won't don't you idiots understand about this? How can we make it more clear to you? Enjoy the movie for fucks sake, just know it is not a faithful adaptation. Excluding the squid is not just an affront to the artists, the writers, the comics industry, and the fans. It's more. We're now seeing a faction of "people" who are banding together to support this ... this ... atrocity. They mock the squid supporters. They make claims that the squid has no meaning, that it's unimportant and can be replaced. These people have no shame, no scruples, and most importantly, no morals. They are diseased dogs. They are infidels. This has become more than squid or no squid, this is now a holy war. It is a fatwa. I've had it. I'm not going to stand by any more and listen to these false prophets blaspheme Alan Moore's name, the squid, and everything that I and any decent fan hold sacred. My god...you keep going on and on and on about a small point from a COMIC BOOK that would not work right on the screen in a movie. If they put the squid in the movie a few thousand of you would be all happy while a few million would say that it was a great movie up until that dumb ass ending. You have to make a few changes in an adaption in order to get it to work in another medium.
You don't want to accept that. Fine. Boycott the movie. The studios will run in fear just like they did when you boycotted Spiderman for Organic webshooters, or XMEN for the costume changes, or The Lord of The Rings for cutting out Tom Bombasomethingorother.

...or a formerly trustworthy, decidedly American-bred blue-balled man-god? Which would be a more likely threat shocking enough to get BOTH sides of the arms race to drop everything and work together for a world peace? I vote for alien squid. What? A squid won't translate well on-screen? I disagree, but Ok, fine. They should still have made it an alien threat rather than "blame Dr. Manhattan". Sorry guys, but Jon being the patsy just confuses things. An interesting idea, but it won't work. Veidt's plan hinged on the fact that neither side in the cold war ever considered that there might be a 3rd party who'll kick both their asses. Manhattan doesn't count because, yes, people will never disassociate him from the USA. He won the vietnam war for them. Him blowing up shit in the jungle in the name of USA would still be pretty fresh in people's minds, especially the commies. It would definitely be seen as a secret American plot. But that's just my opinion, and I'm still in my pajamas.

Well the movie "being good or not" is a pretty big question mark at this point... It's not like it's an original story. It's based on something that a lot of people have dearly loved for years and years. Obviously people have a vested interest what changes might be made. The only way you could judge the film objectively as good or bad is if you are completely unfamiliar with the source material. Well hundreds of thousands or geeks out there don't have that luxury. So of course we're gonna bitch if it seems to us that changes to the ending of this film are a bad idea.

11:26:01 AM
Well, it's now blindingly clear from the clips we've seen that Watchmen is a complete disaster and just doesn't work as a movie. The acting's horrible, the staging and direction dull; the pacing is all wrong.

I had a suspicion Snyder wouldn't be able to handle this but I still gave him the benefit of the doubt that he might pull something out of the bag. Looks like Alan Moore was right after all: it isn't possible to translate the comic into a film - as the comic itself was designed to tell a story in a way a movie can't.

And before you fanboys plunge into mass-depression, suicide pacts etc, remember this: just because the movie's a dud doesn't mean the comic has been 'ruined'. The comic is still there, and is still as good as it's always been.

That is literally impossible to do until you’ve seen a film in its entirety. Are you retarded or is Moore’s cock so far up your fanboy ass that the tip has penetrated your tiny little mind and through some sort of cock-telepathy Moore is now feeding you this nonsense? Seriously, if you want to hate this movie that’s fine but at least have the intelligence to actually see it before deriding it out and for the love of Christ, please don’t use words like pacing and staging in your insipid critiques because you obviously have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.

It's overrated by today's terms, I agree... because we're already used to this concept. When it was written, it was completely new... no one had every treated a superhero in this way before. Superheroes are kind of like an American versions of Greek Gods. Showing them as flawed human beings who didn't have everything figured out and were kind of making it up as they were going along was a pretty new concept, akin to saying that Jesus had offspring (like DaVinci Code did).

Question about the comic
by Shakes
Feb 19th, 2009
02:22:20 PM
Hey, in the midst of all the squid no squid debate, I have a comment/question that I could use some insight on from anyone who cares to respond. One thing that always kind of irked me about the comic was how Dr. Manhattan would hypothetically be unable to stop all of Russia's nukes from hitting the U.S. This just never made sense to me, since the guy is infinitely powerful, able to make multiple copies of himself, etc, etc. It just seems as though logically he'd be able to stop any and all nuclear missiles from Russia. I understand in the case of tachyon interferencce how he could be blindsided, but it just always seemed kind of weak that in his infinite power in matter and energy he wouldn't be able to stop 100% of a Russian launch. Thoughts?

There are just too many warheads involved. He can make multiple copies of himself, but there would be tens of thousands of Soviet missiles carrying independent multi-impact warheads. Even if there are dozens of Manhattans, he has to physically be where he is affecting matter and has to think about it. In some cases he even realizes he cannot affect certain forthcoming events, like the assassination of Kennedy. We see that in the book. So he is *not* all-powerful, though he is at times presented as being such.

The Comedian gets killed for the same reason. Only in the Doc version he'll be a little more resigned to it than trying to come to terms with it.

The bodies issue was actually discussed at length in a WATCHMEN TB months ago. And--yeah--it's one of the reasons why I was underwhelmed by the trailer snippets of video showing the stereotypically nuclear holocaust-blasted NYC landscape that Jon and Laurie teleport into. The original Hayter script (which they seem to be following closely judging from the non-canonical Veidt/Dreiberg scene we've seen) features human victims being utterly disintegrated (like Jon was), making thousands upon thousands of shadow-Hiroshima imprints.

I too want thousands upon thousands of *hideously contorted, bleeding corpses*. Anything else simply sucks--squid or no squid.

Still... we shall see.

Dr. Manhattan's indifference to stopping said missiles or bullets aside, it's insinuated in the book that in the event of an attack he would only be ABLE to stop 60% of the missiles from getting through. (I forget which scene this piece of data is from, maybe the warroom one with Nixon, it's been a few years). This INABILITY to stop all missiles is even mentioned in the clip from the movie released the other day when Ozy says "even Dr. Manhattan can't be everywhere at once." Again, it just seems that the way the character is built up to being immuned from the constrains of time and space, he'd be ABLE to stop as many missiles as either side has.

I find the knee-jerk "eat it, fanboys" reaction to be disingenuous, in particular because this and CHUD and every other site about this stuff is supported by fanboys. But the point is that the original series (I hate the term "graphic novel") had a definite story arc which ended in the final issue with the fricking squid. If Watchmen is literature, then it should be treated like it. Would Snyder change the ending of Hamlet?
Miracleman

...was an English comic character originally known as Marvelman. In the 50s, the British created a character based on the original Captain Marvel, aka Shazam. (When it was printed in North America, Eclipse comics was forced to change the name to Miracleman). When he was starting out as a comics writer in the UK, Moore took the character and "reimagined" him in a way similar to his reimagining of the Charlton characters for Watchmen. It was pretty twisted and strange, and dealt with some of the same themes as Watchmen (whether superheroes are good for society, etc.) Unfortunately, you will probably never see these unless you get the original comics, because the rights to the character are in a legal purgatory. Hope that clears things up.

but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest this whole squid debate has ran it's course. At the end of the day, for better or worse there's a watchmen screen adapation in existance. That's better than kick in the nuts, right?

I honestly don't know why we seem to butt heads so much, Kurt... it never seems to be personal, it just always seems to happen... i guess we can just agree to disagree, but again, thanks for taking all that time it took you to write that to answer my question. I will look for the torrent tonight.

What's this about a squid? You do realize that for those of us who haven't read the comic, this squid debate sounds immensely silly. It seems they've traded shock value for something a little more... well, human. Honestly, I'm more worried about Zack Snyder's intense propensity for slow-motion, which I fear he mistakes for style.

If you think the Squid is not needed

Then that's alright. It's your opinion. But try to understand the squid is cool for, not only wtf=value, but also it worked as a great homage to old comic monsters like Fin-Fang-Foom and crazy 50's sci-fi comics. If Watchmen the comic is pulling from that source material as a critique and expansion, why can't movie monsters be a part of this movie critique?

Amen, and I would go further. The squid is cool for the reasons you said, but it's also needed because it was IN THE ORIGINAL. I'm not saying that they had to film the comic panel-for-panel, but if they're going to change it they should 1) have good reason for changing it, and not just "mainstream audiences wouldn't get it" and 2) replace it with something equally interesting. Framing Manhattan just seems silly, IMHO.

Yet Another Doc Ending problem
by Big_Daddy_Nero

Ok, (even though I stopped reading this tb about halfway down) I am willing to buy into the new ending. But it still presents a problem: Veidt is the one behind the 'bombs' now, instead of the alien psycho squid. Ok. And we know from the trailers that Veidt MUST have still tried to 'eliminate' Doc because we see the scene where he is a giant and crashing his hand through the fortress roof, being all 'disappointed' in Veidt. So, knowing that, we have to assume that Doc was not a party to the 'bombs', and that Veidt simply developed some method to duplicate his 'energy' or some-such, thus making it LOOK like Doc was behind the attacks. Problem is, Doc could (and would) easily simply appear everywhere in the world and make it clear that he was NOT responsible, and the Veidt was. Remember, one of the primary reasons Doc left in the first place was because of how disillusioned he was over what he perceived to be peoples' opinions of him, fair or not. So, was Veidt simply banking on his tachyon doohickey being truly able to take out DOc, and having no backup plan? Or was he assuming that Doc would (as it first appears in the book) simply recognize the logic and decide not to oppose the plan? Or does Doc simply know that it will all crumble anyway, as he knows that R's journal will be published anyway, thus dooming the world no matter what? (this one I would not buy, as that would mean Doc had no real reason to vaporize R to begin with) Anyway, the logic of making Doc be 'the mutual enemy' instead of an actual alien presumes that Doc would hav nothing to say about it. Again, worrisome, as if the pieces don't add up, as they do in the book, then the whole thing can deflate.

My sentiments exactly.I see no reason why Manhattan wouldn't just crush Veidt and say the equivalent of "f*ck all, y'all." (although if he used those exact words, it would be pretty funny).

I think that part of the point of the campaign to discredit Manhattan would [in the non-squid version] be to insure that Manhattan's denials of involvement would not be believed. "Hey, the guy who gives everyone cancer says he didn't destroy our cities, even though he was really pissed off at about the time the cities blew up." Or possibly Veidt believes that after he drives Manhattan away, he'll never come back. That way there's no "real" Manhattan to show up and issue any denials.
