How did he possibly ever recover from that in any way? I mean, he obviously never completely did, as hes still mildly obscure, but hes in movies and stuff. I mean, that was one of the crazier things I've ever seen a person do. I guess it being 1987 helps, no youtube etc. That shit would never go away

No doubt. But think he has always been pretty out there. It's probably just getting more public. Maybe he just doesn't care what any one thinks, or maybe he isn't sober. I think it's fairly obvious Crispin Glover is on some sort of substance in that video. I mean, I'm not judging, I like drugs plenty and support people's right to get fucked up, I'm just saying, that guy was fucked up. If he wasn't on something, then he would be in a mental institution. Sober people who aren't genuinely insane don't talk like that.

But I read once that Crispin was supposedly trying out a new character in that Letterman interview. Never seen it confirmed, and Glover denies the Letterman incident ever happening when asked about it in interviews. Interesting that in the Letterman debacle when Glover is reading from the gossip articles the phrase "acid frenzy" is edited out; as in "Crispin Glover was in an acid frenzy." Anyway, here's the movie that Glover was supposedly testing the character for: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm41 6747 4944/tt0102817

Crispin Glover was trying to be a performance artist

07:32:41 PM
Guys, just in case you missed it: Crispin Glover was trying to be a performance artist, kind of like Andy Kaufman, only he wasn't very good at it, but this IS a performance NOT an interview. And I think he's recovered pretty well - he's by far the best thing in Zemeckis' Beowulf, and he's got a plum role in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland coming up.

That second segment was brutal. It got very antagonistic in the middle. Joaquin was never abrasive or disruptive, he was just quiet and really, just being honest. Not feeling like he has to entertain these people like a monkey. Why does every question have to come with an amusing anecdote? The maniacal laughter from Paul was a little much. No one will see it or spin it this way tomorrow, but that just wasn't fair. I'm surprised he didn't get more angry than he did when they were making fun of him so much, I certainly would have. I think he handled it fairly well for how he chose to play it.

"Aw, poor Joaquin got made fun of. Letterman is so mean!" Nobody forced him to be on the show and entertain people like a monkey. He got into showbiz, signed the contracts, received millions to do movies AND make public appearances to support the films. That's the fucking Hollywood game, if you don't like it, don't play it. Don't take the money. Go work a real job like most everybody else. Hell, pay me millions, I'll appear on Dave's show nude and give Paul a hummer during the commercial break. If he goes on Letterman he's there to talk about himself, the movie he's promoting, whatever. I know Dave's audience is full of rube tourists who clap like seals when they get fish thrown to them. I personally think Dave is in on the whole thing to a certain extent. He knows the basic idea that apparently Phoenix is staging this fake career meltdown and Affleck is filming it all. Dave gets to play along and throw out some classic ad-libs. I'm watching it right now and as much as I think Phoenix is a great actor I'm not buying his committment to an actual meltdown.

Granted he certainly is better than Leno who wouldn't have done anything to draw attention to Phoenix's bizarre beard and demeanor, but if Joachim had gone on the Howard Stern show they wouldn't have talked about anything BUT his new look and whacked out behavior. Meaning I could call out what I was seeing as fake. He's acting weird and/or high. The thing is people who act that way try to pass for normal when they no someone is watching. Not even trying here.

Glover > Phoenix

The Glover bit was cringe worthy and one of the great Letterman bits EVER. And while im on it, for a skinny geeky guy, the guy is toned and ripped. His arm was HUGE! and that leg kick was perfectly timed. Not the sign of a druggie or junkie. Makes me wonder IF Glover might be the greatest performance artist since Kaufman? Phoenix, on the other hand, a dick. The wrong brother died, cant stand the guy. This was a horrible bit that was SO obviously staged and I think Dave was in on it. Notice how he takes his shades off as they are cutting to break, as if hes saying to Dave, "thanks for playing along" oh, and that Moses/Morrison in Paris look, he should keep. It worked for Chris Robinson who was able to bang a prime Kate Hudson on a nightly basis! boo-yaa!

How is me being annoyed artistic? Andy Kaufman was one of the few who got it right if you aske me, only it took years for the joke to be funny. I doubt this will be the case with Phoenix.

to do Kaufmanesque performance art on a talk show. He does in fact, take himself extremely seriously and does not enjoy being made light of. I remember when Jon Stewart hosted the Oscars he made a little joke in his monologue about Walk the Line being "Ray" with white people. A that moment they cut to Joaquin Phoenix who looked like he was considering running up onto the stage and stabbing Jon Stewart in the kidney. What you saw on Letterman wasn't performance art, it was a douchebag at the height of self indulgence.
Oh, face it: they were both STONED

Cripes, I've been hearing that "Crispin Glover was pulling a Kaufman...wasn't it clever?" crap for twenty years now...he was fucked up on LSD, likely as not.

If he was putting Dave on, how exactly did killing his career factor in?

Is that considering that Joaquin's brother *DIED OF A DRUG OVERDOSE* during his own celebrity meltdown, it seems highly, highly unlikely that Joaquin would do a mockumentary on that subject. How many people do you know of who had a family member die of AIDS, and then start doing an act making fun of AIDS victims?
Its a total act.

Not that I think Joaquin's clever or even particularly talented, but come on. He may be a pretentious idiot (in fact he seems to be from what I can tell) but theres too much money on the line for him to go on like that in reality and to everyone's surprise. Both he and Dave have agents, handlers, personal assistents, drivers, etc who could easily have averted that had they wanted to. Hence, I propose its gotta be an act. But a surprisingly amusing one.
OK two Points on Kaufman and Glover

FIRST: Great point on Kaufman by Drew. I mean if you think about it the guys ENTIRE life was a bit or part of the act, everything. Even the backstage drama on the set of Taxi. You just never knew if it was real or part of the act. His whole fucking life was one giant piece of performance art. God I wish he really WAS still. His Elvis brings tears to my eyes. Guy played the motherfucking Grand Ole'Opry...On Glover, I dont want to HEAR how his carrer TANKED after the Letterman bit, its horseshit. Its not like the guy was a HUGE star. He had a good role in BTTF, At Close Range and Rivers Edge but he wasnt the lead in ANY of those movies. After the Letterman piece he had meaty roles in the Doors, Twister, Wild At Heart, Larry Flynt, etc. He's NEVER been a leading guy, he cant hold a movie on his own unless its really creepy like Willard. And last I checked, his carrer is fine, hes in a Burton movie.....

As a few on here have mentioned, Crispin Glover was completely in character as Rubin Farr from this weird roadtrip movie he did with Howard Hesseman. It's a riot, if you can find it--never released on DVD. He's dressed just like the character, and behaving like him, too. The movie was so small, though, and released four years after the late show appearance, that audiences (and presumably Dave) never got the "aha" of the joke by realizing Glover was in character.

And they say Phoenix is the self-righteous, indulgent one? Ha. His antics are funny precisely because of this kind of outrage. Not give Letterman (oooooh such a legend) what he wants in an interview and look what happens. Let the man do what he wants, this is America, Letterman isn't royalty, and if someone wants to just say fuck all to their contracts and not care about public perception, that's fine with me, we need people like that once in a while. It's all a mockumentary anyway and I look forward to how it turns out. P.S. I like Letterman, too, but come on, when Phoenix offered the olive branch about wanting to come on to perform, Letterman just brutally crushed him instead of moving into talking about his career change when that is was obviously what meant the most to Phoenix at this time, real or not. It was funny though "We'll keep you in the rolodex"
Could Be Brilliant

Hmm, my two cents on the deal is that Affleck is making a real documentary featuring a fake/real subject. The true subject of the documentary however will be the “cult of celebrity”, the trash tabloid television shows that constantly follow every instance of celebrities taking a shit or buying coffee. Considering the media reaction when Phoenix’s brother died for ratings and the beating Ben Affleck still takes with unhealthy focus on his personal life, both Affleck and Phoenix have axes to grind with the subject in regards to their families. The mock aspect of it may just be mocking the American public who won’t leave these people alone to do their jobs. The time is ripe for such a documentary with the insane amount of “celebrity meltdowns” that have occurred in the last few years and the all time high at which the public has a need to know what type of toilet paper they use and what brand of cigarettes they smoke. Think about it this way, look what happened the day after it was all over every morning news show and talked about all day all around the internet with speculation of him going crazy, being on drugs, etc. This could end up being something very biting and brilliant when all is said and done.
Christian Bale's on set meltdown was just a bit too

that guy is a genius, fooling all of you losers with his Andy Kaufman genius, pretending to have anger management issues. Kudos to him for being so devoted to his craft that he was willing to get that assault charge or whatever on his criminal record, just to keep the rouse up. Comedy genius, that Christian Bale. Having said that, do any of you people attributing the same thing to Joaquin Phoenix (of all people) now realize how fucking retarded your premise is?

Bale's issue was something that should have been kept on set and was only managed to be leaked because of corporate blackmail thought process. As it has been reported the recording was given to the productions insurance company in case Bale walked off the film. Which to me says it was essentially if you try screwing with us we will have them release this and make your life hell in the media. Well being the big money involved in the tabloid industry, some jackoff at the company got hold of it and sold it for a quick buck. Once again bringing us around to the need to know every aspect of a celebrity's life. Have you not known someone who went off on a job at some point? I know i do.
