Make sure to check out http://tinyurl.com/bupfc7 Pluto on the Feb 17th, it's Naoki Urasawa's brilliant adult re-imagining of a classic Astro Boy story. One of the sadder works of sci-fi I've read in a while.

Never saw Astroboy, but I saw Jet Mars...
by Prometeo
Feb 4th, 2009
08:59:22 AM
Jetter Mars was essentially a remake of Tetsuwan Atomu in which Astro and some of the other characters were slightly reworked by Tezuka because he was on a deadline and couldn't re-acquire the Tetsuwan Atomu copyrights in time to produce the color Tetsuwan Atomu series he really wanted to make. Jetter Mars, like Astro Boy, is a powerful robot built in the image of a boy. The two scientists who created him are Dr. Yamanoue (who created Jetter's body) and Dr. Kawashimo (who created his mind). The disagreement between them mirrors the disagreement in Tetsuwan Atomu between Dr. Tenma and Dr. Elefun, respectively. Several episodes were remakes of earlier Tetsuwan Atomu stories. A total of 27 episodes were produced. Jetter Mars is often regarded by Tezuka fans as one of his weakest efforts, though Tezuka was under some financial pressure at the time, and was unable to wait for the copyright dispute to be resolved. Other Tezuka fans defend the series as the best Tezuka was able to do under the circumstances, and that there was really nothing wrong with it that wouldn't have been corrected had it been produced as a Tetsuwan Atomu series.

I watched this cartoon on American TV in the mid 60's and loved it. It fell by the wayside and now I own all of the new stuff on DVD along with all of the originals released on DVD a few years back. I watch them with my son and while he is not nearly as enamored as I was at his age.....I still love it. Count me in when the movie comes out.

Color me a big fan regardless of how the features look. It certainly looks fine to me and is easily recognizable as Astro.

although it gets repetitive with the whole bomb-defusing shit over and over again, and there isn't much of a story. its just a bunch of tense sequences strung together by a thread that are cool to watch. its a good war film cause its not political. it takes no sides. this movie could've starred sly and seagal and just fucking owned. i agree this is more of an action film than an iraq war movie.

...a fusion of Astroboy and Aquaman? He was a human instead of a robot (I think, anyway) and, by chewing "Oxygum", invented by his father, he could breathe underwater. It was syndicated on a local Philadelphia station back in the mid-to-late 1970's, I've never seen it since. Anyone knows, let me know... I don't even remember the title of the damn thing.

We see today's art of movie making as something rather simplistic. That isn't earned, but rather easily attainable. Where 20 or 30 years ago. There were no computers and therefore more of a struggle and ambition to create the wonderful things we saw on the BIG screen.
On the Cynicism point....
by JumpinJehosaphat

I'd go so far as to say we're cynical because we not only know more about how film is made, we now go so far as to expect such knowledge. Not long ago, it was taboo to understand how the magician performed his trick. Now, it's nearly the opposite.

Which is pretty much true for any CGI film, but the 2003 cartoon is a good example what happens when people miss the central point of Astro Boy: a robot with a soul and the personality of a child but which is also a highly equipped killing machine (once again I'll spruik the little-known 1980s cartoon version, the only one done with Tezuka's direct participation ... see it, see it, see it !!!)
