Don't really like the art in the comics or mainstream comics in general. I like the Indy stuff in B&W ink that is an artists own style.

There, I've said it. I'm dissing the legend. How dare I. But let's be honest - Moore was a fantastic writer in the 80's and 90's, but lately he's become a grouchy old fucker with a major chip on his shoulder. Surely he should be embracing the interest (and money) that the movie version of 'Watchmen' is generating? Ok, so it's not a panel-by-panel shoot of his magnum opus, but Lord knows, it's fucking light years better than his current drivel.

Has anyone read 'Lost Girls'? Shabby, uninteresting comic-book porn for boring old pseuds who've never read Playboy and think 'Flesh Gordon' was being ironic. Grow up, Alan. Get a fucking haircut and take your head out of your arse.

By the way - nice pics, Dave!

Here is the soundtrack for the movie. The score i did NOT post. For spoiler reasons. But you can find it easy. Am i the only one who is disappointed in this soundtrack? The score is most important but this soundtrack to me is very underwhelming. Does it fit the movie??? Lots of "classics"...... Music From The Motion Picture Watchmen track-listing is as follows: Desolation Row - My Chemical Romance... Unforgettable - Nat King Cole... The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan... The Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel... Me & Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin... I'm Your Boogie Man - KC & The Sunshine Band... You're My Thrill - Billie Holiday... Pruit Igoe & Prophecies - The Philip Glass Ensemble... Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen... All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix... Ride of the Valkyries - Budapest Symphony Orchestra... Pirate Jenny - Nina Simone* *used in the end credits of the "Tales From The Black Freighter" DVD.

I especially love the second, which really combines the (seemingly) disparate styles of Gibbons' and Snyder's. And I'm tickled that John Higgins is doing the coloring again... but in that case, how could he forget that Rorschach wore purple pinstripe pants? Without that little splash of comic-book color, he just looks too... drab and flat.

I've been saying that on the talkbacks for the last couple of years. Mostly just because Herc annoys the crap out of me his ignorant ass only talks about Moore and Ellis when referencing comics. He's still a good writer but his current work pales in comparison to his 80s output. What really bugs me is that Miller gets all the criticism while Moore, who can't seem to create any new characters of his own, doesn't. I'd love to see JM Barrie come back from the dead and bitch about Lost Girls the way Moore bitches about people using his work for film.
And one more thing...

I'm glad to see Gibbons taking such an active role in creating and publicizing the movie. Hopefully people will finally realize that Moore is only PARTIALLY responsible for his greatest works and that they were all true collaborations. Gibbons deserves just as much credit for Watchmen as Moore does but fanboys like to drink the Kool-Aid when it comes to Moore's reputation.

You appear to be confusing artistic integrity with Moore's almost pathological attachment to his own writing, which he will never allow to evolve in any way, shape or form that he himself did not pen at the precise moment he penned it.

Strong principles are all very well, but the true mark of an artist is the ability to continually evolve and adapt; therefore retaining the capability to constantly surprise and enthrall the reader/listener/viewer.

Sorr y if you feel my opinion of Moore's ouvre in the last decade and a half constitutes 'trolling', but this is a forum for debate, is it not? Peace.

How can you explain the significance of the Black Freigher comic and then turn around and say it's non-essential? Not only does it cover those metaphors you explained, but it provides panel-by-panel counterpoints to what's happening in the main action. If you understand and appreciate Watchmen, then you know Black Freighter is essential. I'm glad they're doing it for the dvd.

That more people are turning on this project by the day as evidenced by this talk back. Sad how now people have turned on Moore as a means to justify this movie and the radical departure it has made from the source material. The tragedy of what could have been. After the movie has been released, Snyder will be the new McG, as this movie will be the definition of what not to do with great source material.

Black Freighter is NOT essential...
by badboymason
Jan 25th, 2009
06:55:10 PM
It enhances the story and themes sure, but to say it is ESSENTIAL is by far exaggerating its importance. Its akin to those that think Tom Bombadil was ESSENTIAL to LOTR - if you can excise it and keep the main story and characters intact, it's not essential. The murder of the comedian is essential, John going to Mars is essential, Black Freighter is not. Having said that, I don't think it should have been ditched, but would have liked to have seen it as a movie-within-a movie, much as in the comic it's a comic-within-a-comic. You could have had short glimpses of the story on TVs in the background of scenes etc. to accomplish the same as it did in the comic without devoting lots of screentime to it...

...I don't believe that Moore has lost any talent. People think that, and then he starts creating great work again. He may be in a slight slump now, but all writers go through that. (Well, except for Neil Gaiman, but Gaiman is a writing god. Anyone who can get Harlan Ellison to call him cute has got to be talented.)

My gripe with Moore is the general paranoia that seems to come to the forefront when dealing with Hollywood. Sure, he's been screwed more times that Stephen King when it comes to translating his work, but you make the bastards pay for it through the nose and use the money in a way that strikes back. By now, Moore could have created his own comic book company, hired extremely talented people, and given DC and Marvel a run for their money, both in the comics and on the silver screen.

I used to know this guy who was a voice coach for Hanna-Barbera back in the 60's. Best advice he ever gave me: Screw integrity. Make your name and your money. Integrity will still be there when you're in a position to afford it.

People seem to have a hard time imagining someone NOT wanting to sell out to Hollywood. For so many that's a dream, but Moore just wants to stay in Northampton, work on his art and not have to deal with all the soul-sucking crap that comes along with being a Hollywood money machine.

And more power to him.

So if I understand your argueent, Moore is a dunce because he has stayed away from this abortion of a film and refused to take a tyical Hollywood cash out, ala Gibbons. Instead he is content to produce new material and stay out of the Movie Studio BS everyone here and beyond condemns daily. On top of that, if he was intelligent he would be taking advice from a voice over artist whose greatest claim to fame is that of uttering the words of Droopy or Grape Ape?

The story is the real character of Watchmen. Gibbons art is derivative at best, bits of Bolland, bits of Giordano, but nothing ground breaking. it is Moore's story that is the star.
