Still don't like the look of the ship. Communicator is lame. Can't they make it look less like a Cell Phone and make it more retro. More pictures including an alternate..? Enterprise Toy http://www.wizarduniverse.com/ startrekmovie.html and the Narada.

Might it be so that the equipment can be identified as being from the Enterprise? You know, if the ship or a crewmember go missing? I know in TOS the arrow head was the Enterprise insignia, not the Starfleet one (until later series)

What a novel concept! These things should be made and sold first and foremost to appeal to little kids and their parents' wallets. Glad to see Playmates is scaling back on selling plastic crap to the "collector" (translation: aging geek male) market.

Really, they think kids are going to give a shit about playing with these? Nobody born after 1985 would ever want a transporter room playset. Might as well make it hyper detailed, jack up the price, and sell it to the collectors.

Most military uniforms, gear and vehicles sport the flag of the country or even the branch/division/battalion they belong to. The rest of their equipment often feature the corporate logo of the company that made it. I hate what I've seen of Abrams' Trek so far but this is one complaint I don't understand.

Bullshit. It's bad enough they snubbed a terrific movie for best pic and best director, but they couldn't even give the soundtrack some much deserved lip service? I'm all for "retro" and all, but this doesn't seem to be going for a true retro-future look. The bridge design seems truly dated, bringing in the worst elements of design from the "Hitchhikers Guide" movie. I do like the capsules for the transporter, but I agree with the comments on the communicator. The flip-out pocket communicator was prescient when Star Trek aired in the 60s, but now it seems a huge step backwards. Even the badges on Next Gen are behind our current tech. It seems to me like they're trying to have it both ways: redesign some elements to "update" them, but keep some classic anachronistic designs for the sake of purity. Go one or the other, IMO. Man, I would kill for a steampunk-inspired Star Trek.

You know, yesterday, I almost purchased the new JJ Abrams influenced prequel Star Trek comic book at the local comic shop. I had it in my hands with the rest of my weekly pull when some weird, coke-bottle, greasy haired 40-year old who smelled faintly of stale pop-corn and kerosene, cut in front of me and started in on the owner about his store's lack of Magic the Gathering merchandise and also on why they hasn't gotten in the latest 'Danger Girl' Hero Clix. "I want to fight 'Danger Girl' Hero Clix against my friend's 'B.P.R.D.' Hero Clix!!!" Mike (name changed to hide his identity) the store owner/operator, who is a reformed old-school punk rocker, father of two and all around pretty cool dude, just shot me this miserable look and I laughed out loud about this guy. Then I put the Star Trek comic back down and went on with my patient tolerance of this uber-geek. The point you ask? I am already a geek. But buying a Star Trek comic book would peg-out the geek gage so hard that the glass on the dial would break. If I would have bought that book, I might as well have just given up on pussy for the rest of my life. Just ended it there...that being said...Dude! You are talking about Star Trek Toys. Star Trek. Toys. Who the fuck cares if you think that it is "impossibly nerdy"? You are already there. Just go with it.

God... Playmates sucks... they drop the license for years. Art Asylum grabs up Star Trek and does some pretty good stuff. I agree with the comments about having handheld communicators in the distant future as being outdated considering where we are with current technology. Still, I like the look and feel of the communicators from the old series. The obvious solution would be to combine the communicator and tricorder devices of the old show into one device. It could still be a handheld flip communicator, but it could also have a screen, like an I phone for the work that a tricorder needs to do.

Ingeld, One thing that is ignored when looking at the plausibility of the Communicator being a hand held device, is that the technology as seen is actually a lot further advanced than is at first apparent. The Communicator can basically communicate, with no discernible time lag, with a vessel in orbit, or with personnel on the surface of a given planet, without using satellite dishes, microwave dishes or a massive communications network. This is far more advanced than present-day communications technology.

Maybe because other than Drew working there HitFix.com is a really generic film website; a cut well below Entertainment Weekly. I'll be surprised if it's still around next year. Since Harry started AICN a million film websites have emerged. In fact, you could say this is the site that launched a thousand sites. Like the Ramones were the band that launched a thousand bands. I wish Drew the best, however, and I hope it does well so he can get paid and take care of the family. But it's hard to find his stuff on the site amid the AP standard bullshit.
