Has there ever been a career that went so far based on the notoriety from a single shot in a trailer? I remember when this site had some balls and didn't just act as an advertisment for major studio tripe. Can you explain why you give bandwidth to exposing your readers to, as you admit, shitty movies? I am on to you Harry. Thanks for helping to pilot the wave of horror remakes as well, by getting behind the origional, (as so to seem 'hardcore' and old school), when all you are doing is promoting the remake by default. One thing everyone should remember..most of the horrors being re-imaged were shit to begin with...and remember one other thing, one of the 1st of the new wave, remade horrors was Harry's baby - Texas Chainsaw - he was even in it remember? How much do the studios pay you Harry. I'm outta here - I get my movie news from chud and msn earlier than here anyway.

That's the best way to describe it. Viggo is complete badasssssss! His charectar and performance trump everything in the movie. Ed did a good job with the overall movie but the movie switches gears a lot I mean in one scene every other shot switched from hard edged drama to "the office"-like awkward comedy and mugging. The decent amount of action is well done and studded with cahrecter momements but the movie tries all kinds of tricks to impress you and some of them just really put you off some how. Still a reccomended viewing though.

Yeah, visually the movie is flat-out amazing. However, the story is so bogged down in metaphysical nonsense that it makes AKIRA look academic. And it's a shame that the main character of the franchise (The Major) doesn't even "appear" in the movie until the final act. Very odd way to handle a sequel after so many years.

That being said, I've found the SAC series to be well written and rather enjoyable despite the fact that, in general, I don't really care for anime.

why in the hell would I want "Swing Vote" or "My Best Friend's Girl" in blu-ray? I mean, not saying I liked those movies, but do I need clarity on Dane Cook's face? Especially with their higher cost. I will only buy big action movies, or great looking epics on blu-ray. I will never buy movies like "Pineapple Express" on blu-ray. I don't need to see Seth Rogan's taint in high def. This is the reason I think DVD will never go away and blu-ray will always be the secondary market. It will be successful, but not as much as DVD.

First off Zellweger looked gad-awful. Maybe that's what passed for attractive in those days and after you've been on the trail for a month, but she looked ROUGH. And this is from someone who thought she looked cute as could be in Jerry Maguire. Beyond that the movie just didn't know where it wanted to go. I think it could have used one more script rewrite to really make it click.

You must not watch HD at home on a proper system. Blu-ray and HD-DVD's alone aren't anything special, they're just compact discs like any other except they hold a shitload more data than regular DVD's. Which, as one example, means those multi-set dvd's can now be on a single blu-ray/HD-dvd.

What you're really saying is HD isn't going to be that in demand and, to wit, I think you are 100% incorrect.

When you've seen true HD video and heard fully lossless 5.1 audio on good speakers, you will change your tune immediately. Not about not wanting to see Dane Cook's face in hi-def, I agree 100% there, but to see the beauty of Blade Runner or the lunacy of the Joker or the majesty of Middle Earth when it comes out (ok, New Zealand but still) in all it's 1080p beauty is simply a sight to behold. You can still play regular DVD's so you don't have to buy the hi-def version. Not all dvd's will make it to the new format for any number of reasons (rights, demand, etc) so those will still be viable. I still occasionally buy regular dvd's and so do most bluray/HD-dvd owners I would think. It's just that I get my favorite movies in the best possible format for the greatest possible viewing experience.

Rag the prices if you want as it is still a bit expensive, etc, but the format will absolutely take over SD and larger capacity portable media is the 'defacto' future. Even after high-bandwidth downloads becomes the norm we will still be using these multi-layered discs to store transportable data. Either static memory chips or discs of some sort but until we figure out how to use crystal lattice structures to store data (not that far away actually) or some other more efficient and portable 'large data capacity' storage medium, this is will be the norm for the foreseeable future for portable media, I think.

The main issue is HD doesn't get much more hi-def than what it currently is now. Unless we march into the 70mm film range (which has higher resolution than HD currently) then there's no where else to go in terms of image quality; most films are not filmed with that high resolution to begin with. Blu-rays/HD-dvds have the multilayering optics to be able to store tons of data in a quickly retrievable format (this will improve via player advancement, not media development per se) so the real issue is image quality. Not the media in which it is stored.

All that said: not everything is in HD, or 1080p or even 5.1 audio so it's still new and not blanketing the market yet. But to act as if HD is not going to catch on smacks of luddite-ism and that is something that has no place in the Geekverse.

And Chuck Norris is truly nothing when you compare him to The Jesus or The Walken. most of your arguments are about George bush specifically. He is not popular even among republicans these days. believe it or not, he is not all that conservative. the centerpiece of his 2000 was the lefty "No Child Left Behind" gobbledygoo, as a for instance.

As for invading the 'wrong' country, I have no clue what you mean or how that is relevant. No only has Iraq been an enemy of the United States since 1991, the war was supported by numerous prominent Democrats.

Reneck2, the proper term is "Polyphemus.' It is a literary reference to the cyclops in Homer's The Odyssey. judging by your grammar and various ignorant assertions, I would assume you've never read it or anything else that did not require crayons to be fully enjoyed.

I absolutely agree in wanting to see The Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings, and other great movies in hi def. However, I don't need good sound or a hi def picture for movies like Pineapple Express, and I never will. Especially if I'm looking at the DVD rack and I have to pay $29.99 or more. The Dark Knight, I'll pay that extra, but many movies I won't. Other friends and family are doing the same thing. However, I will say, if the cost does come down to earth in the same range as DVD's then perhaps blu-ray has a chance. In the end, as long as I can buy 3 for $10 DVDs, blu-ray does not have a chance of overtaking it.

Just wanted to let you know that NCLB is a total conservative item, in no way a lefty tactic. It mandates tons and tons of testing, and requires proficiency of 100% of students. In the next few years, pretty much every school in the USA will be "failing." This is a mandate for any school that receives federal funds, which is all the minority schools. This is a total right wing thing, all of us on the left HATE it!

The schools that are forced to take in every lame joker with no interest in getting an education are the ones that suffer under NCLB. We in the public schools take quite a beating, but what other group is forced to take every single person who walks through the door and deal with them, no matter what actions they do/don't take?

And now, back to my previously scheduled interest in DVDs this month. Bought three from this forum this month.

I can appreciate liberals do not like NCLB, but i cannot understand why other than it usurped a liberal ideal. NCLB was nothing but Bush pandering to soccer moms who believe every child is above average. NCLB essentially asserts children are lumps of clay who can be molded into near perfection if they are given the proper government instruction. could their possibly be a more liberal philosophy than that?

We went to war on an intelligence failure, but it has been the official stance of the US since a congressional resolution 1998 to push for regime change in Iraq. I do not believe one can reasonably examine the relations between Iraq and the rest of the world since 1991 and not figure another conflict with Saddam Hussein was inevitable. At least it came on our terms.

no idiot I was saying if bush is never charged with war crimes we'll never have any credibility at all in the world and we'll officially be unable to police our own government(and really I bet most people already believe are government is above accountability by now which is a sad fuck state of affairs) that's what I meant by our country being fucking doomed. And teh war charges are simple no talking point can nullify the following. The bush admin. went to war on false prentenses. They authorized waterboardng which is an accepted form of torture in 99% of countries including our own(BTW it didn't even get decent intel teh first guy we tortured was a housesitter for a safehouse). Those two are real charges under any war crime tribunal. Bush and cheney need to go to jail.

Harry, you really thought Zelweger was adorable in that thing?
by Vern
Jan 13th, 2009
02:20:32 AM
I guess I don't get the Zelweger appeal, she bugs the shit out of me. But in this particular movie they partially get away with it because her character is supposed to be a despicable ho. When it's a real problem is like in LEATHERHEADS where she's supposed to be hot-headed but charming, or most of her movies where she has to do an accent, or that upcoming one where she's supposed to be a horrible classist bitch but in a lovable sort of way.

I guess my question is, how is she "innocent"? Did you miss the scene where she was splashing around naked in the river with Lance Henriksen? (SPOILER)

NCLB not liberal at all
by Homer Sexual
Jan 13th, 2009
10:06:01 AM
I can see why someone might view it that way, but mandated tests for federal funds to low-socioeconomic schools isn't very liberal in my view.

I will give you that "Some" liberals believe, as you say, that every child is above average. But those must be the limousine liberals. I think most of us believe that every child should be given the opportunity to succeed. I believe, certainly, that every kid should have the same educational opportunities regardless of their background, but it is up to him/her to take advantage of it. I believe the real goal of NCLB is to cut off federal funds (Title 1) to schools in low income areas as we fail to meet the mandates of NCLB. 'Nuff said on this topic.

I had no trouble accepting the Daughter the way she was written because they found an excellent young actress to play the part. If the girl is smart and talented to play the role convincingly then I can believe that there is one out there that smart some how. Dennis Hopper didn't have much to do in the end which is a shame. But the Pro-life commercial, and the illegal alien one for that matter, were hysterical and I was kind of touched by the father/daughter relationship.

Harry's gastric bypass & politics

Since his comparison of John McCain to the bad guy from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington a few weeks back, Harry seems to be inserting his dislike of the right into his weekly DVD column. This week, it was Chuck Norris' support of Huckabee, calling the choice to endorse him piss poor. While some, not all, of the most vocal on the left have an almost religulous view of their political ideology, they're not really adept at following their own code (preaching the dangers of global warming while living 20,000 s f homes and using private jets). Trust me there's plenty of hipocrisy (sp?) on my side. Harry makes no secret about his size, how he got that way, and how it's effecting his health. Mike Huckabee was also obese. While he is currently no Kate Moss, he has lost a lot of weight through exercise and lifestyle change. Being a long time reader of this site, I know Harry has made several attempts to lose weight. Now he has settled for surgery to shed the pounds. So if we were to use this as an example of how political ideology can be associated with THIS real life situation, it seems the liberal response would be to make a few attempts to fix an issue, let it get out of control, and then go for the drastic option; while the conservative approach would be to cut back, make changes, be patient but be persistant. Now I'm the first to say that the conservative approach isn't the best option every time. We, as a nation, and the world, need balance. Since Harry touts himself a cheerleader of the left, I just had to bring up this example to see if he would be able to put down the pom poms for his side long enough to realize that their's might not alway be the best approach. Or at least to hold off on the name calling.
Swing Vote wasn't that bad
by JonQuixote

for an improbable 2 hour metaphor. It seemed pretty meticulously constructed - ideals as characters: the media (the reporter) the conscience (the daughter) the apathetic everyman (the main character), the hollow shills (the candidates), the puppet-masters (the aides), the ideal (the secret service agents). And then they all dance their familiar dance. It was soulless and predictable, but purposeful. And occasionally - when it allowed itself to become really cynical - it managed to squeeze in some genuine funny. It probably would have been better as a balls-out satire, like THANK YOU FOR NOT SMOKING. As a Capra-esque fable...it was alright.

95% of people who buy and watch dvds don't give a shit about picture and sound quality. That's just for nerds. People just want their movies on a cd so it is easy to store. A friend of mine got a blu ray player from her boyfriend for christmas and what does she use it???watching pirate dvds that she gets for feck all euros!!! Blu ray will never replace dvd, it may stand beside it but it won't replace it.

Yes, that 95% figure seems to have been pulled directly from your ass. Published reports state that as of a year ago, one third of Americans have flat screen (HD) TV's, with a little over 80% of all tv's sold in 2008 flat screen. Those tv's can only take advantage of the HD 1080p screen definition off of some satellite services and BluRay discs. Now that players have broken the 200 dollar barrier, expect more people to upgrade their old dvd players to BluRay.

Enjoy your VHS tapes, and don't forget to re-wrap your rabbit ears with foil.
