look a lot less busy and messy than the ones from the first movie. Still not as good as if they would just go with the original freaking designs, but at least it's improving. I'd like to think they are taking fans' complaints into consideration here, and that maybe Bay will also actually film the action in a way where I can understand what's going on.

Which is good. To be honest I'm nearly 30 years old, I bought the G1 toys and saw the original Transformers movie on the big screen and I still fucking loved Bay's Transformers. The design were just a little bit too busy and the action at times was hard to follow, that being said, I'm sure that Bay has looked at what the fans want and is going to meet us halfway. 2009 is gonna be a great year at the movies folks.

Remember those shitty, cut-rate knock-offs that barely "transformed" from something that sorta looked like a robot to something that sorta looked like a vehicle?

The kicker was, the shitty local station where I lived never showed TRANSFORMERS, just GOBOTS, because they thought kids were too stupid to notice the difference in quality...and they were. Sadly, that screwed all us slackers, to say nothing of the stoners.

The eighties pretty much sucked...don't let anyone tell you any different.

Dr. Chin & GreenStlye...
by DeeJay
Jan 12th, 2009
12:13:52 AM
Dr. Chin... they say this relationship started with "Pearl Harbor," and has persisted since. Despite the artistic freedoms presented by the industry, Hollywood has a much more developed interaction with the US government than many people tend to assume (just look at how and why Jack Valenti went from the White House to the MPAA). GreenStyle... you're right, and not only was it easier to follow on a television screen, but the story and characters were easier to follow than the first cartoon movie. Don't get me wrong; I liked both. The reality, however, is that Bay's product had much better organization than the freshman cartoon effort. Additionally, the larger themes of having the freedom to live and having guardian angels to protect man had far greater reasonance than the idea of the "touch" and (sometimes) fighting for the mere sake of fighting.
Now let's get Sunstreaker and Prowl in this movie bitches!

... this highlights the tragedy of bad design and poorly-chosen collaborations. The Go-Bots cartoon could've hidden the deficiencies in the toys (the smaller size, the lead villains "detachable" wheel, etc.) by giving them a crisper look, better-developed characters, and better-choosing their partners. Instead, they used a set of designs and a backstory that confirmed the notion of their characters being second-rate as compared to Transformers. Heck, "Mighty Orbots" actually had far better animation than either "Go-Bots" or "Transformers," but they didn't develop very good product-based partnerships (or character designs), either.

If they don't, I can just see audience members shouting "no-no-no" along with LeBouf (or bursting into laughter every time he says it). Come to think of it, maybe Bay is going to "wink" at the audience by having one of the characters point this out to S. Witwicky...

by cloudrider`

if you think otherwise, it's because it's typical for americans to think they live in center of the universe. first of all, its real name is MR(machine robo), and both the original toys and animation is way better than transformers's. i know, cause i owned quite a bunch of the toys growing up here in asia. they're much better designed and made of diecast for the most part. it's only when hasbro took over from bandai, and started producing them for the US market, then the toys got real shitty. then that king of shitty animation called hanna barbera made a cartoon out of it, further tainting the license.

we here in asia got so much cooler toys growing up you just would not believe. while you were playing with your plastic GI joe and plastic transformers, diecast robots were all the rave here.

....I always remembered liking the Go-Bots' toy designs better. Mainly 'cause they seemed to try to make a wider variety of vehicles into robots. Picture a couple of stoned toy designers truckin' around the city, picking random vehicles, and picturing how they'd turn into robots. Hell, I think I've done that myself. Scooters, submarines, Emergency Personnel Vehicles, helicopters, motorcycles.... all done before, and/or more realistic-looking, than Transformers in toy form. Where Transformers took the prize was in the mythos itself, and the characters on whom it rested. Go-Bots never had the character strength of Transformers. Scooter was a pussy. Leader-1 wasn't really that good of a leader. Cy-Kill was simply an asshole. Optimus Prime was the epitome of leadership. Bumblebee had more heart than most Humans...without having a heart! Starscream, sure a bit of a bitch, but GODDAMN if that guy just never gave up. And Megatron. Best-Villian-Ever!!! Always seemed to me to be in it more for the game than the gain. That said....I'm of the seemingly select few, die-hard, long time fans, who can honestly sit on all the proverbial fences and say that I both loved, but had a lot of problems with, the first film. I wanted the G1 story, but have never had more than a passing problem with a vast re-working of the main story arc....they're all part of the same mythos. I laughed a lot during the first flick, and thought The Beef's comic timing was great, but really didn't like the bumbling, slapstick, low-brow comedy. I loved the robot designs, but hated the 2-hour GM commercial. I can't see shit, or understand anything that's happening during most robot on robot action, but don't care!!! I just stare at a different portion of the screen each time I watch it! I had been waiting to see a live-action TF movie since I was six, and I thank Mikey Bay for finally giving it to me, and not disappointing me more than entertaing the crap outta me....but DAMN YOU MICHAEL BAY!!! DAMN YOUSE ALL TA HELL!!! ...and the sequel is STILL gonna pay for Bay's Phillippino coke habits outta OUR pockets. Deal with it.

F-U for trying to paint Americans with such a broad brush sayiing that we think we are "the center of the Universe" Fact of the matter is your people want our American money and therefore Bandai made a cut rate deal with an American Company like Hasbro and apparently completely sold out some of the Concepts for Robo machines/ Go-Bots. you guys up there didn't listen the first time around, did you? I'm not defending Bay, God knows. but he did explain why the first time and it's the one thing he's sorta got a point on (making everything silver or black is another debate). But seeing it has to do with how things photograph and not a toy you guys wouldn't care anyway. Hell, most of you think that stupid Sandy Collora costume is how Batman should look... at least you'll love the Watchmen flashbacks! ;) I was going to go on, but I'm probably already going to be set upon by spluttering nerds or just ignored.

Having said all that, Benders it IS pretty devastating when some kid breaks your toy. where the fate of the planet/universe was at stake, yet those zany transformers we're hiding in shia's backyard, so his parents wouldn't get 'mad' at him... that was SO WACKY and FUN!

sometime big budget producers dont understand the difference between a serious movie with some humor sprinkled in, and just being ridiculous. then when the fans get pissed they figure 'oh, well the dark knight was big, so that means people only like 'Dark' movies... which leads to stupid thinking like "lets make the next superman movie 'dark.'"

sorry im going off on tangent. and the first transformer movie was really bad.

(another aside.. the scene on air force one, when frenzy snuck on, and he was about to be discovered, but he transformed into a stereo. one of the top officers looked down and figured.. "oh it just a random stereo left in the middle of air force one... no concern, ill just ignore it." ridiculous.)

After reading posts on a few talkbacks related to this movie it seems like about 3% of the AICN populace liked the first one. Why exactly are you wasting your time looking at info and pictures of the sequel to a movie you disdain so much? I like this site but if I see a headline w/the the words Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Sequel I will be scrolling on by. I have better things to do w/my life than trying to convince a fan of Movie X that they are stupid for liking Movie X. I would think that after this movie comes out I won’t be seeing any posts about it from those that hated the first one. Unless they are just seeing it for research so they can continue to insult those that actually plunked down a few bucks to see a robot movie with there kids.

By using a unique concept car whose design is approximated at over $500,000? Talk about a disguise. I would never pay any attention to a car like that gold camaro concept car driving down the road. Nope. Just like I never notice Bently's or Fararri's or Delorean's or Lamberghinni's or any of those super-expensive sports cars. Nobody does! Those $200,000 plus sports cars are simply perfect if you don't want to attract any attention.

If you're going to rob a bank and you want to hide your identity behind a mask, you should create a Mission Impossible style mask of George Bush or maybe Brad Pitt. Maybe Bin Laden? You know, somebody famous, that way NO ONE will notice you walking around. Or recognize that you're in disguise because, you never know, George Bush or those guys might actually rob a bank one day!

Seriously, Bay needs to stop using these movies so he can drive/keep/whatever these concept cars or whatever the hell is happening. It makes zero fucking sense to use unique concept cars or 1 of 10 in the world concept cars not in standard production for these alien robots to transform into. I mean shit...these guys should be transforming into a fucking Nissan Maxima..Toyota Camry's, etc. Not a car valued at almost a million dollars or a car that isn't produced both of which would draw MUCH undesired attention. Isn't Bay kind of shooting himself in the foot with the dumbass gun here?

I thought the exact same thing when T3 had this "Terminatrix" female terminator who then proceeded to not bother to hide the 'terminator' aspect at all so why even have a girl? Why not discard the flesh covering after time-traveling and just nuke the town? (flesh covered bomb plot hole, etc).

They need to get rid of these "12 year old boy" mentality having screenwriters who can help but write huge amounts of dumbass into their scripts.

And how at least he got the military right in T1. Yeah sure that's fine if Bay was making a movie called "US Army" but he made Transformers and he seriously fucked it up bad. I mean those of you who claim to like it and are not 12 explain yourselves. Is it the fat over the top black guy you like? Or the random Australian hacker who was hot so that was fine, but her character served no real purpose. My problem is the movie is called Transformers yet we focus on a shit head who has girl troubles and half a dozen other human assholes whose character plots go no where. Then half way through we get Transformers and then at the end we get a battle which is shot with extreme quick cuts and shaky cam. It wouldn't have been so bad if the final battle was an all out fight between the Transformers but no Bay couldn't resist putting in the pointless military shit heads. That movie is terrible and if you really do like that movie, holly shit man raise your standards. Because when you watch the scene where the Mountain Dew vending machine transformers and you don't roll yours eyes, you need help.

I "get" your concerns, but you both know that there's a larger issue here (and it transcends Bay). Whenever a film gets such a huge budget, the studio is expecting it to reach a full family audience. For every silly scene in Transformers, there could've been a smarter scene... but that smarter scene would've baffled the average 8-year-old who needs either some robots fightin' or some robots doing some "cool" things to which they can relate. Air Force One protocols are going to fly over their heads, for better or worse. While I agree that the silly scenes detracted from the product, we've got to recognized that--- in lieu of another business model that can pull-off a Transformers live-action film--- this is simply one of the costs of doing business.

... to be fair, do you see a studio giving the greenlight to a 90-120 minute movie that would come at the cost assumed by your criticisms? I'm not saying those weren't valid gripes... but in the grander scheme of getting the movie produced, are they really moot?

... LOL. Agreed on drawing the line. Still... with a larger budget to play with, I suspect that Bay has already avoided some of the "filler" scenes from the first project. Despite those scenes, you have to admit that the movie had some excellent segments complimented by a very strong message related to freedom and the right to exist. Despite some rather bad scenes, arrival to Earth was beautiful, and Cullen provided a powerful monologue when stating that we humans were still a young race, and needed to find our way. It's just too bad that Prime explained Jazz's language by saying he learned it from the world wide web--- and *didn't* reveal that he learned both the insults and profanity from AICN, in particular.

...by ignoring all the shit for the booger-people. It can be tough and there are whole sections of the movie better skipped but much like that notorious edit of "The Phantom Menace" which takes a bloodied cleaver to all the fart and poop jokes and basically anything Jar-Jar and all of the sudden, it's actually a good movie.

Cut out the criminal use of The Jesus, anything with Jon Voight (he was so good in Heat and now he's a jackass in everything), every scene with Anthony Anderson, Decepticon comic antics on AirForce1, the 'get their hands of my bush' line, Autobots being all "hip and trendy" and all of the sudden, it's an infinitely better movie. Bay loves that shit tho so he's one of them and every time I see him pushing further and further outside the realm of reality and into the hyper-reality of the somewhat retarded 12 year old boy who spontaneously starts masturbating if he even sees blond hair, becomes mesmerized by a jet flying overhead...basically, the little glasses wearing ritalin challenged, sexually disturbing, karate psycho from "Smokin' Aces". With a coke habit. And no sense of restraint. And all this shit actually gets in the way of making these movies better than they could be...

in the original cartoon, the Decepticons laughed and giggled when humans fired their tanks and missles at them. That was the appeal. Humans had NO affect on the Decepticons at all. They NEEDED the Autobots. This is actually a very important element in making the transformers a powerful story. Your hero is only as strong as your villain. And if the humans can't touch the decepticons then that makes the Autobots that much more powerful heroes. Unfortunately in Bay's world. SHIA LEBEUFF destroys Megatron. Not Optimus Prime, not Bumblebee....a human boy. Because this movie was never about the Transformers it was about "A Boy And His Car" and this was one of the major problems with the movie.

Sorry Hasbro but people are a lot more interested in seeing transformers on the big screen than GI Joe. If you would have made sure Bay did a good job with Transformers that might have been different.

However, since Transformers only redeeming factor is the special effects. People will assume GI Joe is going to be the same. Unfortunately, there isn't much interesting about a special effects GI Joe movie.

Your only hope is to stick to the source material, look at the original GI Joe and figure out what made it work. What are the STAPLES of the series. Etc...

My first advice would be to make sure you NEVER see Cobra Commanders face. But i'm certain you have already made a blunder of that. Cobra Commander should be a terrorist who is only seen on ransom videos and in private meetings but should ALWAYS be wearing his helmet, hiding his face. BUT you're going to show him as a child and then as a young adult. Maybe even show what makes him so cranky. Sadly, audiences don't want to see that. I'd hope more screenwriters realize this type of thing but they don't.

You tell me then exactly how many well-made visually stylish car ads have red cars as opposed to silver and black then, eh?! And tell me the film student secret! I'm intrigued! Red cuts down your options in terms of contrast, hue and highlights. On film anyway (actually, in illustration too) - having said that, Wayne's Lambo looked great on film, but that colour looks like arse in real life. And there's never been a white BMW that didn't look like shit. But now we're getting into highlights on contours rather than the high points of a compound curve... Problem is Bay loves to mix up the metallics and blacks so much it becomes, as our friend zyuray said, a pile of shiny scissors.

Who owns this factory? How much does a Transformer cost to buy (or can they be leased)?

Assuming I'm wrong about the factory, does that mean two Transformers (who love each other very much and are married) make a tiny little baby Transformer?

What would dirty, sweaty Transformer sex sound like?

He'd rather be a traffic-accident style filmmaker: throw a bunch of shiny lights and noises up on screen and watch everyone slow down and stare. It's bullshit, and thats why he sucks ass.

I guess the Allspark does the procreating? (TF sex sounds like a REALLY squeaky bed. Or moving big garbage cans around.). And the Tranformers need to hide because then they'll become government experiments? (As we saw.) Yes, there is also the question of why are they stuck in one disguise if they can choose their form on Earth etc. (Why not turn into Alan Alda or a gay stalkerbot or whatever?) I guess these have been asked and answered many times or you're not supposed to think too hard with this.

They're never going to be happy until their beloved gay toys looks like a bunch of stacked up washing machines on the screen. Bay improved on the designs and they bitch about the color??

I am obviously not going to waste my time transcribing the different techniques of putting red into a film. There have been several car commercials featuring Red cars!! One that comes to mind was the series of asd with a bunch of black cars and one red one that was standing out from the crowd (the angle of the ad.) Obviously you are some kind of Bay apologist. If Bay, or a retarded monkey for that matter, cant take a 200 million dollars (or whatever dollar budget) and figure out how to film a red car then what good are ya?! And F-u palpatine! G1 one is the only reason we are here talking about a Transformers movie at all! It sure as hell isnt because of Beast Warz! Of course I guess casting Peter Cullen is more evidence that G1 is completely irrelevant! Ok on my way to therapy now
Yeah, Bay improved the designs...

By making almost every character an unintelligible visual mess. And most of them were the same color and overall shape, making it almost impossible to distinguish one from another unless he's actually addressed by name in conversation. Not that there was much conversation to be had... That would imply character development.

... I'll agree with you regarding the first 2 movies you list(and would only say "yipee!" and "yousah" in regard to the 3rd), but would also contend that they were initially marketed to studios as appealing to a different audience than "Transformers." Bay and Speilberg likely pitched this project with the expectation that kids would come to see it... and their marketing & finance teams subsequently crunched numbers with that in mind. Could "Transformers" have been successful if launched from a different business model? Probably so. But it's pretty obvious that they committed to this model early on, and the financiers would likely not take too kindly to a divergence from that plan. As the second movie may have a different expected/target demographic, this installment may take a slightly different approach to any potential silliness.

the gay G1 fans bitch and moaned,There weren't enough of them to make any difference in the boxoffice. Regular movie goers enjoyed it enough to make a shit load of money. So the rest of us who liked the movie for what it was(big budget, big action popcorn flick)get a sequel. We win! and fuck y'all whiny G1 fags. Oh and most of you went and paid to see it anyway.

You're kidding, right? Enjoyable for the whole family? Titanic has an extended sequence where Rose is nekkid, then she screws Jack in the car. Dark Knight has violence that is just beyond the typical comic-book movie variety, what with Joker slamming pencils in skulls and sticking his knife in peoples faces and Harvey getting his face singed off.

we're arguing the same point. I just wish big money producers would realize a movie not having forced kiddy scenes in the them. (and dee jay, number 3 was star wars: a new hope, not phantom menance.. no yipees in that one.)_

Yep, "obviously" you're not going to "waste your time" (not holding my breath, Finky)! And read more carefully. I never said there weren't any red car ads for Christ's sake. Obviously you're going to have a harder time of it advertising Ferraris if you don't, for example. Also on the matter of reading more carefully, God knows how you make the incredible guess/leap of me being a Bay apologist (probably the same logic you use to assume I'm American and have seen the red/black car ad). Lord knows I've raved on enough about what an egomaniacal dick he is... and in the same post I even admitted the shiny scissors thing with the black and silver. Try a bit harder, mate.

Not everything's completely black & white y'know. Like it is for all those who can't admit the initial choice of a flatnosed truck was a big compromise in service to both the constraints of 2d animation/long lens/less perspective hand-animation headaches and of cheaper toy costs. The longnose for 3d/cg/film makes a lot of fucking sense and erases the constraints that were there previously. And saying that does NOT mean I don't think he fucked up other things, simpleton. I have a harder time understanding changing say, the new Astro Boy's design when there were no reasons/constraints on what they changed in the first place, for example. But hey, if you like red washing machines despite everything, go for it sunshine. And casting Peter Cullen evidence that G1 is irrelevant? Uh, what? Hope your shrink is worth it...

Oh i get it! Mate! that must mean you are from England or Australia or something. Or maybe you just listen to the ads for Outback Steakhouse alot. Anyway its not a cop out just common sense that are ways to put a red car in a movie!! I mean if you want a technical eplanation look it up yourself! Does throwa curveball at you...yes. Does it mean that it is impossible especially with todays sophisticated Digital camera?...hell no!!! thats my point! And what the helli is this innane point about a flatnose truck being easier for 2D animation? Dont tel that to the MASK animators of the 80s! The comment about the PC casting was for palpatine who was marginalizing the influnce of G1

If I'm not mistaken, American Beauty also had splashes of red in the center of the screen throughout the movie.

Innane?

Well, to start with it's a defining factor in why it/he looks how it/he looks and my initial view about how G1 Prime's "iconic" look was just a practicality thing and a compromise. So hardly inane (and that's how you spell it too). You obviously know nothing about 2d animation, and your general tone is very young! Drink some of your own medicine and go look it up, simpleton! BTW once again for the slow ones, it doesn't mean it's never done, and I would argue that Optimus showed why it's much more dynamic when you DO stick a nose on the damn thing. Having said that, the flatnose makes for good anthropomorphism in his 'chest'. And no, that's not a curve ball from you, it's copout #2.

As far as mate goes, I didn't think you'd get it the first time (considering your initial Americacentric assumption) so I hit you over the head with it. What's even funnier is that you did it again - why would I have seen an outback steakhouse ad if I DON'T live in America? Strike 2, copout 2.

Dingbatty, don't make Killian's mistake. I'm NOT talking red in general. And I'm not talking about emotional/narrative use of colour in film either. I do that all the time. And it goes for costume design too. And "telegraphing" (which Spielberg loves). One other trick is putting a small amount of contrasting colour temperature in the frame so the eyes don't fatigue over time and so the colour doesn't lose it's vibrancy. Having a touch of cool or warm colour in there to balance helps it pop. Things stand out more when they have something to contrast. The other thing American filmmakers tend to forget is that when using colour for an emotional response, the west is different to the east, and the same colours mean different things. Cheers. - Mate.
