The fact that he's involved, which is a surprise actually, adds to my sadness that this film is being 'brought back' yet again. However, of course the world needs to see this: just how 'fucked up' the world is. Because sticking pins in the 'American dream' is exactly what the world needs right now. Good use of time/energy everyone. A round of applause for everyone involved. You're really 'pushing the envelope' with your use of unnatural lit night shots and all. Goth high school kids around the USA have been waiting for such a film to 'relate to' that I just can't believe how 'finger on the pulse' this production is. This type of shit is why I didn't subscribe my life to the Hollywood system in the first place. That coming from someone who actually knows the meaning of the phrase 'Holly wood' in the first place, BTW. I hate everthing about this. My use of profanity is finished.

Maybe it was groundbreaking for its time but it is horribly amateurish with a weird comedy subplot of bumbling Dukes of Hazzard style sheriffs that can't seem to get to the house. Horrible acting, camerawork, and dialogue. One disembowelment scene doesn't make up for this awful movie.

Anyone that has seen the original knows what goes down, but it's nice to see that nothing has changed.

That being said, the original looked like a home movie, it will be nice to see a modern (and hopefully more graphic) take on the story.

the source material for the original, is not really that good (in terms of Bergman films) and the Craven film is not good at all. However, this trailer looks pretty cool. If people are going to remake horror, I like seeing curious failures remade, rather than canon like TCM.

January is when the studio put out shit just like late August early September. Unfortunately for all the press the Platinum Dunes and Japanese remakes get horror has still been cornered into being this shithouse b-genre and it could be so much more. When's the last time we saw an A level American horror film that actually scared people and had real talent behind it. Snyder's Dawn of the Dead? Perhaps. The Devil's Rejects? Nope that was an unnerving rallying cry for Satanism disguised as a big budget snuff film. When was the last time a horror film really effected mainstream audiences and became a cultural staple? Probably not since the 80s. Okay I'll get off my soapbox now.

Why would I see the remake of a film I have already seen when the trailer for the remake summarizes the ENTIRE film in 2 minutes? Whoever cut that trailer should be fired. They showed that Mary lives, the killers getting fucked up, and Krug's head in a microwave. Why would I pay to see this now?

And for the record, I'm not someone who thinks the original is untouchable. It's not. The scenes of brutality and the premise was good. But breaking up the violence with scenes of bumbling cops in a chicken coup truck was stupid.

Not that the original was a great piece of filmmaking, but this looks decent. It looks like it has a pair of balls to some degree, whereas most horror movies these days pull their punches or just go for the cheap shit. Gotta say I like the Hills Have Eyes remake as much as I fucking love the original. That was a pretty brutal movie, and this looks like it could be the same. Only thing though is that the killers don't look tough enough. The gang in the original looked like a bunch of sociopathic nutbags, but these guys just look like actors. Oh well, how much can you expect these days?

For YEARS I've been praying they'd remake this one. The original had so many incredible themes to play on, but Craven just wasn't good enough at the time to make it the right way and it ended up mostly a piece of shit - but an important piece of shit. Then, a couple of years ago, the remake script started floating around...and Christ, it was great. And apparently written by one of the producers' assistants at that. It did EVERYTHING the original didn't do and, at the same time, did everything it did.

And now THIS? Sure, that's a slick-looking trailer, but they couldn't have cast less-menacing actors for the killers if they trotted Grimmace and the Hamburglar out there. I'm sorry - Mary gets SHOT in the water? And she SURVIVES? And what the HELL was with that microwave thing? The entire point of the violence in the original, at least from the angle of the parents, was that there was nothing premeditated - it was just animal and raw.

Fuck me. I'm really disappointed.

Please tell me that you didn't think Last House on the Left was worse than the chechclear video. That was a REAL life for God's sake. If that wasn't the meaning of your post, I apologize. Seeing (and for some reason I give in to curiosity and always watch those videos) real life vids like chechclear and the Ukranian murder videos always have a different feel to me than even the most shocking films. I guess they are the ones that always give me a feel that I just saw something that I can't "unsee".

The parents' arc in the original was the one thing that made it interesting to me. The trailer showed for the most part a focus on the things that would make me want to take this hell ride again and a reduction of what would make me not want to... until it starts to look like more of a torture horror than the original. They got the tone I'd want right, but then they showed way too much, as everyone else has said. Trailer editors... not a lot of good ones out there methinks.

by Omegaman

on DVD. My Bloody Valentine was censored when it was released orginally in the 80s; all the gore and kill scenes were cut out because it came out the same time there was a real serial killer in the news. Now its being rereleased on DVD uncut, uncensored. That would have never happened without the remake. Thats one reason why remakes are a good thing.
stupid - whats the parents motivation?
by thecrimsoncurse
Jan 9th, 2009
10:58:24 AM
if she lives, what are the parents motivation to drug and place a guy headfirst in a microwave?

too elaborate and like someone else said, too premeditated. especially if she survives it all.

also i hate how they "hollywood-ed" up the scene where she is shot. so now she is diving under water as bullets swim past. the original scene where she slowly walks out into the pond utterly defeated was so haunting, why screw it up?

Its a fucking joke how much of the film they revealed in that trailer. I am absolutely amazed at who thought that putting every beat of the story in it was a good idea. and I thought the original was just ok. The original had a look that was as bad as black sweaty pantyhose smell (I guess that made it gritty). The music in the original was also pretty great. If I remember correctly, it was happy hippy music with lyrics about the characters. It was darkly comedic to me. I'll certainly give the remake a shot.

I'm pretty sure it's their daughter's friend that survives in the trailer, which would mean they actually knew more clearly what happened to her and make them even more homicidal. Also, whoever it is, it's not clear that she lives through the experience longer than to get back to them, she seems pretty fucked up, and frankly, I think most parents would still go pretty psycho on someone who raped their daughter and carved words in her abdomen with a knife. Still, the premeditative nature of the killings was also a problem in the first one. I could never accept the biting off the dick scene, it just didn't make sense as something they would consensually plan to do. "Ok, honey, I'm going to set up some proto-Home Alone style traps and got crazy on these guys with a chain saw." "That's great hon, I'm going to lead one of the guys I think raped her outside away from you and put his dick in my mouth... then bite it off." "Good idea honey, you go suck that rapist dick." See what I mean?
Don't blame the trailer editor
by yer mama
Jan 9th, 2009
12:26:51 PM
The executives at the studios and the public are to blame. Testing ruined the mystery of trailers. Telling the whole story tests better than not. Why? Cuz the sheep go to trailer tests aren't smart enough to realize they are seeing an ad. No, they're looking for a story so everything better be crystal clear. Then the even bigger idiots at the studios decide the trailer that tells everything MUST be better cuz it tested better than the one that didn't give away the ending. And since the executives have limited talent at best, they have to go with the "scientific" facts to cover their ass. That said, this trailer is well cut and has good music...which is all done by the editor. So, don't blame him for a trailer that is a cliff notes for the film. Blame yourself.

Good defense of the editor and a fair argument... up to the "Blame yourself" bit. I know it's always fun when having a moment of insightful wisdom to end it with some kind of catching zinger line, some sorta punch, but the fact is that at least in my case I'm not a test screener, and unless they start doing test screenings for horror movies in Virginia, I probably won't ever be anytime soon. I imagine thats ture for a lot of people annoyed by this trailer. So while it's fair to blame the higher levels of the system for the form of the trailer and give credit to the editor for the quality of the delivery (not sure about the music call though, editors do get that call I suppose but if its a track already on the sound track it might have been expected of him/her... like the "Hush" cover for I Know What You Did Last Summer) I think the likely hood that any of us had anything to do with it besides going to films despite their trailers. I know I didn't.

I was using "you" to represent the general public. Anyone on this board actually likes movies and understands the idea of a trailer being an ad. The general public? Not so much. I wish you could sit in one of these test screenings and hear the inanity uttered by some 15 year old wiseass trying to impress his dumb friends. Then try and sit there laughing to yourself as the executive 2 rows over nods his head in agreement with the nitwit.

Whoever thought that would work for this... wrong, wrong wrong. The song's way too silly even to work ironically in this setting. Too well known too, especially since even at the most literal level the song doesnt have anything to do with the plot here. Add to that a version which is sort of soft and flabby but in no way haunting and just... yeeech. Not that this was going to be good anyway, but come on, rookie error.

Went to a 35mm screening of LHOTL in the UK a good few years ago where David Hess was there to talk about the movie afterwards and sign stuff. I kid you not even as an old bloke everyone was quite wary and unnerved by Krug sitting there not 10ft from you - what made it worse that he was being so very nice and entertaining. Very disconcerting. It's a shame but Nuevo Krug hardly looks like he can create such a monster that transcends the boundary of the movie.
