Why is this article in the teevee section? Is the new 20,000 made for television? I'm curious to see how McG's Terminator turns out, so I'll wait before making any blanket statement on the quality of this project. (And by "curious", I mean, I am curious about what other people will say, because I'm not seeing his Terminator. I saw 1 and 2; that was enough.)

Mc G and directing
by welsh_bullfrog_goon

10:45:46 PM
As a director i think MC G is well out of his depth with the terminator franchise only a director such as David Fincher has the experience of creating a dark forboding sci fi thriller which continues from the previous cameron films, so captain nemo may very well match his creative depth. Don't get me wrong salvation looks great, i just think the script will suffer and we know with the ambiguity surrounding the rating it will probably be pg13/12a (12a uk rating) that could affect it too , i think T4 has trouble tarnished all over it's name, i just hope i'm proven as i love the cameron films

all the quasi-intentional homo-erotic subtext of the original novel, (what with 3 grown men continually stripping and unstripping and grappling and such) makes it into the movie, so that modern audiences can either champion it or villify it or laugh at it while misunderstanding how gay sex worked in the old days. (in the old days, Having sex with either your best guy friend or a nubile young male cabin boy was something you did either before you got married to your wife or while on a suitably long sea voyage. You just weren't supposed to talk about it-either to champion it or condemn it. Don't Ask, Don't tell, and all that.)

The McG love comes from renewed hope in the man after the new Terminator trailer, which doesn't look as sucky as anticipated. Here's the thing about that: That will be like a midling effort. McG seems to kind of get terminator: how it's supposed to look, how the Future war works, the easy and obvious stuff so the movie can look right. But he don't get the deeper themes so it will probably still be a big mess.

I used to watch the original multiple times a day, so much so that my mother grew to hate it, as I didn't know how to operate the VCR, and demanded she put it on incessantly. James Mason, Kirk Douglas, and the incomparable Peter Lorre are outstanding, and the giant squid sequence was a groundbreaking effect at the time it was released.

Goddamit, McG has no vision, no substance, nothing special other than the ability to deliver decent tv pilots and sail the waters of the entertainment industry. He is not a geek - he's a former soul patch wearing jock rock douche who wants in on all the geek money that's out there. His Terminator 4 trailer should've easily induced chills, when all it has induced is "looks workmanlike and blah". For the sake of fuck studio heads keep him away from all this treasure.

It's based on the book. Verne wrote a sequel to it, by the way: "Mysterious Island".

I don't think McG deserve the hate you guys are dishing out, except for his name. Focus your ire on that. As far as movies go, so far, it seems like he's made each movie exactly the way they should be made. Nothing he's done so far proves that he _can_ or _can't_ make a decent serious action flick. He won't measure up to Cameron, obviously, but who does?

and the title is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" No, yes, I know, they'll probably end up dropping the "Captain Nemo" part and just turn it into a remake or remimagining, BUT, imagine if this project was indeed an origin story...and one connected to the first film. That would be badass. Captain Nemo has always had an interesting background, and that alone could make a good film. Plus, we could see the Nautilus modal again! It is being produced by the TR2N people, so you never know. Perhaps it is connected to the older film. If it's a remake...then fuck it.

by I Dunno
Jan 7th, 2009

I could never understand why they closed that ride but after thinking about it, I remembered that the seats were really small and the submarine itself was very cramped. I think people got too fat to fit in the thing. There was probably an incident that involved the jaws of life so they just said Fuck It.

I liked Charlie's Angels too. Could have used a little girl on girl action. Interesting trivia about that film, the circular house that overlooks the Hills in LA that belonged to Sam Rockwell's character was also Tim Allen's house in Galaxy Quest, also starring Rockwell. Okay, maybe not that interesting.

by Frank Black
Jan 7th, 2009
08:30:21 AM
Hard! Seriously, Disney needs to stop ruining the classic rides by replacing them with half-assed modern updates. The original 20,000 Leagues is also just fine thanks. (I hate to sound a million years old but as a Disney Park pass holder, nothing drives me crazier than seeing the classic stuff converted to modern bastardized versions. No more remakes, and get off my lawn.)

by Chishu_Ryu

Frank Black
by Chishu_Ryu
Jan 7th, 2009
08:47:51 AM
Agreed. Disney parks has committed some atrocities to their classic rides. As much as I remember digging the 20,000 leagues ride, though, I also think back that its ideas were antiquated in this scientifically modern time, such as the giant killer squid attacking the sub, the dragon, and the mermaids, all which might leave a bad impression on young minds. Maybe with the new movie, they'll convert that huge lagoon back to a more scientifically accurate or maybe more fantastic sub voyage. I think the biggest atrocity the park has committed was replacing the singing Tiki birds and flowers show with a rapping Iago parrot. Although, granted, kids with ADD probably couldn't sit through the old show without screaming for Dumbo....
