GET OFF SPEED RACER'S NUTS

This was totally not the worst movie of 2008. Almost everything on that list puts the suck of Speed Racer to shame. The Love Guru or Meet The Spartans, anyone? Credit where credit's due; it's a live action cartoon. It never tried to be anything else. And the racing and effects are some of the most gorgeous around. Maybe the backgrounds suck, but don't tell me those cars don't feel completely real. I never once doubted they were in those cars. And yes, Capone. I've watched it over and over and over again.

It's groundbreaking in the world it creates and the feel it provides. The performances are obviously done with love for the material and it offers a visual spectacular that is not without a real heart and genuine emotion. This is how classic anime becomes "live-action anime," and grows up to appeal to all audiences in the process. Sadly, it seems it's a love-it or hate-it movie, and there is no in-between.
Katrina + Ben Button pisses off New Orleans. And Forrest Gump.
by esbern
Dec 30th, 2008
11:06:02 AM
I've lived here my entire life (33 years)and know this city better than anybody on this site. The Katrina subplot was pointless, and pissed everybody in my theatre off. Additionally, how could nnobody realize the fact thatthe movie was a complete ripoff of Forrest Gump. Go read the original short and you can spot what was tacked onto the movie (hint: everything). I mean, handicapped kid goes through his life stories while holding love for a girl that saw through his problems at a young age. Oh, and then there is same time period, happens in the south, falls head over heals into money, grows up in a house full of a bunch of goofy characters (Elvis>Lightning Bolt Face), both see war, both lose the love of their life, raised primarily by a mother figure, etc. etc. Complete shitfest of a movie.

I believe you're right. Speed Racer is a movie that you can't simply kinda like, or kinda not like. I admired it for the world it created, but you could say that for all the Star Wars prequels also. That didn't make them better movies.
BEN BUTTON + KATRINA
by kgerm
Dec 30th, 2008
11:14:01 AM
It's that whole "You never know what's coming for you." I never understood why it had to be set in Katrina until I formed my own opinion of it's ending -- when Daisy gets hit by the car it goes through this long protracted sequence of how if you'd done one thing differently everything would be different. I think Daisy was keeping her daughter there to read that book so that she could die in the flood with her, because whenever Caroline strayed she would bring her right back to it.

Spoiler Alert please??? Not everyone has seen the film yet! I personally think that Speed Racer was the most fun I've had in a theatre all year. Now, that's not saying it was the best film I saw, but it was a blast. I was able to accept it as a live-action cartoon, and the dialogue and backgrounds and everything else that people like to bitch about were what made the movie so special and different. I guess it's true that you either love it or hate it, but there's no way in hell it was worse than Meet The Spartans! Come on!
The Fall is overrated; Speed Racer is the worst
by jimmy_009
Dec 30th, 2008
11:22:00 AM
I still can't figure out why The Fall is on some people's Top Ten list. I turned it off about 3/4 of the way through. When I've invested that much time into a movie and still don't care to see it through, it's bad. It's lots of shiny images posing as an emotional story. The director should stick to music videos and commercials. As for Speed Racer, it's complete eye rot garbage, like paying to watch someone play F-Zero. SR and The Fall were the two movies I didn't finish this year, but SR got pulled before the halfway point.
BENJAMIN BUTTON is FORREST GUMP redux
by YackBacker
Dec 30th, 2008
11:22:50 AM
Sorry, Capone, but I cannot praise a film that is a souped-up version of a previous movie (written by the same guy!). Let's get to the evidence: 1) Both Button and Gump are born with some handicap. 2) Both protagonists have wise old mommas that say shit like "You never know what you're gonna get" or "You never know what's comin'". 3) Both guys have lifelong crushes on girls they met when they were young (and handicapped). 4) Both girls (Daisy & Jenny) go off and slut of up for a few years. 5) The hummingbird v. the floating feather. 6) Adventures at sea- both guys run off to the ocean, and befriend salty sea capn's. 7) Both guys become rich by accident/consequence. 8) Both are worried that their offspring are going to be handicapped like they are. 9) Both have brushes with history. 10) Both protagonists are Southern.

I'm sure there are other similarities I didn't mention. Eric Roth self-plagiarized his GUMP script for BUTTON. It's a fucking joke. I reject this movie on this basis alone.

Talking...
by TheWacoKid
Dec 30th, 2008

I ALWAYS say something when someone is talking and/or texting. I have never had someone come back at me. They have always stopped talking or put away their phone. If it is a crowded theatre, you might actually get applause for saying something. This is what happened during Superman Returns when a girl picked up her phone and talked LOUDLY. I agree with Capone, if you need to text or answer a phone during the 2 hours of the movie, DON'T GO TO THE MOVIE. We need to start doing something, because the theatre employees just don't care.

all very annoying. HOWEVER, NOTHING is more annoying than the guy who makes an issue of it, loudly, interrupting more than just a few seconds of the film... instead being a loud, arrogant, annoying 15 to 20 minute distraction from the film because he can't shut the fuck up and suck it up. Instead, he spends his time (after the people have shut up, usually) lobbing popcorn at them, over your head, leaving everyone within 10 rows on guard, expecting a fistfight any minute. THAT guy needs to go the fuck away. And excuse me, I may be taking this a bit to seriously (yeah, me.. the guy criticizing the guy who brought a HANDGUN TO THE CINEMA.. yeah.. I'm taking it too seriously)... but who ruined the movie on Xmas night? The guy chatting it up with his kid, or the guy who FIRED LEAD!!?? Ok, I'm done with this. Yes, people who talk in theatres are annoying. I stopped seeing films in 2 theatres in Ontario, CA because of exactly that. Audiences full of people who just could not shut the hell up, stop taking calls or stop texting their friends.
( IM @ BTMN! JKR IS SCRY AS FCK! 4RLS!! 2 BAD HE DIDE! :( lol YsoSRS?? lol)
But nothing is anywhere near as annoying as a fat inbred fuck who can't control himself. And what kind of coward shoots a man in front of his kid? They used to string guys up for that.

Listen I hate talkers in movie theaters too. I've even gone to certain movies alone to avoid any sort of distractions that may come from the people I usually go with. But WTF Capone, putting "victim" in quotes. Granted this guy is a douche but he is a victim, please do not justify a crackpot (first of all bringing a fucking gun into a theater) and then shooting a man in front of his son. I don't care how annoying he was being, a fucking 10 dollar movie, no matter how great, does not absolutely equal a man's life. And don't kid yourself that it was harmless. He could have. Do not put victim in quotations. It doesn't make you sound enlightened, its just an insult to yourself.

and so do every one of my friends I've shown it to. It's just a light-hearted, old-fashioned good time at the movies. Cartoon made flesh (and cool digital backgrounds). The only thing that seperates Speed Racer from just about EVERY Pixar film is that they had REAL people populating the digital world instead of 1s and 0s. The message of family and self-worth is just as subtle in Speed Racer as it is in the almost universally-loved The Incredibles (which I too love). I understand taste is subjective, but I just feel bad for those who can't find the fun with the Racer family. Oh yeah, and Christina Ricci is soooo super-adorably sexy in that movie too.

im going to see Button in a little while but i also was born and raised in NOLA and the idea of it doesnt piss me off slightly. If it pisses you off get used to it because im sure there will be deluge of films coming that have something to do with katrina. The one that pisses me off is the little kid who spent his teenage life being a thug and ripping people in new orleans off from robbing them and terrorizing them, well he stole a bus and evacuated the people in his projects. So a movie is being written to make him out to be a hero. One act of good does not repent a lifetime of nastiness on his part and now he will just be a rich, ignorant thug from new orleans, yay for him right? that pisses me off more than Roth using Katrina as his framing device for a film.

With all due respect, I gotta say you're fucking insane for that opinion.

Benjamin Button is one of those films that in a few years people are going say to themselves "what was all the fuss about?"

Just as they did with Forrest Gump.

Fincher must have been so pissed Zodiac was ignored by the Academy that he said to himself "You know what? the next one I do is gonna be a big fat piece of Oscar bait!"

And before any of you say "You idiot, Fincher was working on Button long before Zodiac got dissed at the Oscars!", I'm just kidding.

Sounds like THE solution. No handguns required. I mean, don't they already have stalkers with nightvision sneaking peeks at... I mean watching for video cameras already? Why not hire some bruisers and start booting people who take phone calls, text and talk loudly? But what do you do when there are around 20 percent of the audience doing it on a friday night in Southern California? Chances are, some of those wannabe upper-class suburban gangsters are as armed as our little inbred chubster was when he "defended" us all and became AICN hero of the moment. And probably with a better class of firearm. For the most part, I just stick to arthouse cinemas (dwindling) and daytime showings these days. Sad.

Well, I guess I was wrong. I did have something else to say. Does anyone know if he asked the guy who was talking too much during the movie to squeal like a pig after he shot him? Or is that just a "family thing"?

I only ever saw Forest Gump the one time and watching Benjamin Button I felt I was having deja vu all over again, but yeah, that's pretty damning. It's funny how they never explain in Benjamin Button why he is such an innocent simpleton with folksy charm who isn't dissuaded by any of the turmoil of history at the time. I think in years to come I'm going to think about Button: holy fuck that's some amazing cinematography tacked onto a godawful script.

I kind of feel the same way about "Valkyrie" and "The X-Files", movies that critics began to have a little too much fun shitting on. Its gotten to be a fad with some movies.

And: I saw Benjamin Button yesterday, and its a good, solid film, but not even in my top 10. Brad Pitt does some unquestionably interesting work in it though.

Semi Pro AND Step Bros., two Ferrell flicks in the same year that I turned off after an hour without a genuine laugh. I got more laughs out of Meet the Spartans and I couldn't finish that pile of shrek shit either. And if you put Mummy 3 in the worst pile, why not Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Suck? That movie licked the Mummy 3's Yeti balls! As for the best, you put the Snoozefest the Fall in your top 10 and omitted Gran Torino completely? Button Is Also VERY Different Than Gump
by SamuelLappDance
Dec 30th, 2008
12:10:54 PM
"Benjamin Button" is indeed the best film of the year. And there are many differences between it and "Forrest Gump." Off the top of my head: Button is not an idiot. He doesn't come close to any major historical event or figure (even his WWII battle is just a skirmish, at best). He doesn't pine for the same woman all his life, but instead shags many over the decades. He eventually comes to have a relationship with his father. The world is never made aware of his presence (by contrast, Gump is plastered all over newspapers and magazines). And from a purely thematic standpoint, "Gump" is framed and plotted to make you think and feel for the characters. "Button" is framed and plotted to make you and feel for yourself. His affliction is used as a mirror to explore the things we as a humanity have to deal over the course of a life ... aging, dying, surviving, dealing. I liked "Forrest Gump." I LOVED "Benjamin Button."

You have to remember, outside of anime fanboys, SR had to have a low audience recognition factor going in. Outside of opening weekend, word of mouth had to carry it, of which it did not have enough.

And I think Capone may be rating it "worst" because of expectation. Going in we knew Disaster Movie, Meet The Spartans, et all were garbage. But Speed Racer had the promise to be something great. I take it Capone felt it fell well below that standard.

You ignore the fact that Eric Roth LIFTED gimmicks from GUMP and used them directly in BUTTON. Sure, he spruced them up to look different, but the you can peel back a thin layer (Button is reverse-aging, Gump is an idiot, BOTH are handicapped youths) and see that Roth wrote the same movie all over again. It's lazy filmmaking. That's what bothers me the most- that people are hailing this "Oscar-bait" as something great. It's anything but great.

You condone shooting a man in front of his little boy, because they were talking? It certainly sounds like you do, by your words. I don't like disturbances during a movie, either, but this pulling a gun on a man is over the top, and so is your apparent approval of such an action. And who knows what the man and his son were talking about? I can imagine that a film like BENJAMIN BUTTON would be a bit puzzling to a little boy. Maybe the father was simply trying to explain to him why Brad Pitt's character was born with an old man's body. And maybe he was trying to do it quietly. You really feel for the guy who shot him? What kind of man are you?

I really do love the movie and think Capone is way off on this one. I've seen the movie three times (once in theaters, twice on DVD) and I've found something new to love each time. It's a great flick that will be recognized more as time goes on, unlike Button and Indy 4.

I saw Benjamin Button the other day, and I enjoyed it a great deal for most of its run time, but near the end it cheated. They completely glossed over the last 13-15 years of Button's life, and the dimentia thing was a complete cop-out. One other thing - he was a baby twice. He started off as a old baby, grew so that he had a kid brain in an old man body and ended up with a baby brain in a baby body. He should have ended up with an old man brain in a child's body and eventually winded down into a baby. This is the only thing the F. Scott Fitzgerald story did right, otherwise the source material is a total piece of crap. I read the story after seeing the movie, and it is completely different - the only thing the same is that a guy named Benjamin Button has this affliction, and his birth father owns a button factory. The movie is very good, except that one important detail, and the short story sucks mondo monkey balls.

Bad sound stages. Shaif "lets make this kid a Star" LeBeouf or whatever. Bad CGI. No sense of wonder or amazement. The graveyard 'gouls' or whatever that looked like cast members from some bad Broadway version of 'CATS' or something. Just a bad movie that failed on every level to capture the sense of awe and wonder of the first three films. There was one scene that showed what the movie COULD have been: The chase through the ant colony.

Speed Racer was so stupid it was relentlessly entertaining. I even loved how they incorporated the hokey "Oah" sound that Speed made in the original cartoon. My one caveat is when the kid and monkey interrupt an otherwise touching moment at the end. No, if you loved the hell out the cartoon series as a kid I don't see how you can't love this movie. They're both retarded as hell and equally as fun.

The dialog in the cartoon version of Speed Racer is cookie-cutter and complete drivel, yet it's acceptable. If you ask me, the movie just followed in the cartoon's idiosyncracies. However the same claim about the dialog can't be said for The Happening. Capone, I understand that Speed Racer is a complete love or hate movie. But worst of the year? Especially with films like The Happening out there. I'd say you're a little off.

That was the best movie I saw this year. I liked The Dark Knight a lot, but I can't get LTROI out of my head. It's so calm but menacing. It's pleasingly subtle, it has one of the best endings ever, when Eli is on screen you feel so nervously curious, and just the right amount of gore. It only had one flaw in my opinion, relating to Eli, but I later read that it was more in the book. It was just sort of out of place to me. Anyways, no one cares, but I'm bored at work.

Speed Racer is far from the worst film of the year and actually it's one of the most revolutionary films in terms of sheer technological advancement since, well since The Matrix. The CG used int eh racing sequences and the camera work around a lot of the stunts was breathtaking. The acting is wooden and the lines borderline silly but that's only because that was exactly the feel of the it's trying to emulate. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit for what it was. Not best of the year good but certainly not the worst...

It's annoying when someone texts or talks during a movie. It's evil when someone is murdered, especially over something as relatively trivial as a film. How can you feel so passionately about a movie, something which at best illuminates the beauty of the human condition or at least entertains real people and gives them a release from the world around them, but feel that that the guy in the theater had it coming? I love movies as much as the next guy on here. I also get real real mad when someone disrupts a movie. I can understand yelling at them or causing a scene, but not murder. Let the non-violent resistance go on, but no way should this dude killing someone over a movie be considered positive in any way.

looking at your list of tied for 2nd many of the films need to judged in a different light for example the Mummy 3....it tried to be a "B" movie and in that attempt it succeeds to review it with the idea it was trying to be more than that is unfair to the film- sure it isn't a GREAT movie but it sure as hell is a great "B" movie....as a reviewer you should be looking at the film as a whole to see IF the project delivers what it was trying to NOT what you wanted it to be...

Hey Chris Carter - no matter what people think and say, the backbone of the show (and the characters) was always the alien conspiracy. The notion that you would bank on a stand-alone-type film as the way to bring the franchise back after a decade long hiatus is lunacy. What an embarrassment.

Because it did a lot to rectify the numerous problems I had with the stupid series finale. However, I do admit that the "X-File" was kind of low-key for a major movie. We had bigger stakes and more action damn near every week on that show. This movie was more about Mulder, Scully, their relationship and where they were at in their lives than it was about the actual X-File. Now, I liked that, myself. But the average person probably wouldn't. It's too slow and quiet and thoughtful a film for the average movie viewer, the casual series fan, and especially the summertime moviegoer. Hardcores only.

You have to give it up to John Goodman, Matthew Fox and Roger Allam for their respective roles as Pops, Racer X, and sleazeball Arnold Royalton. I mean honestly, I suppose I should list most of the cast. I thought they were dynamite in what they were trying to achieve, mostly with the 3 I mentioned.

Royalton was so goddamn sleazy and ruthless, I'd put him behind Heath Ledger's Joker as far as best villains of this year go. When he tears into Speed after he refuses Royalton's offer? Magic.

Alot of films I missed. Some (the Mummy3, Journey to the center of the earth, max payne, the Spirit) I skipped based on the strength of their commercials which showed just enough shit to convince me that they were to be very, very bad. Others I planned on seeing but skipped due to the reactions of my fellow talk-backers (the Happening anyone? X-Files?) Some SOUNDED cool but something told me to stay away (88 minutes, Righteous Kill). Some I avoided due to the horribleness of the previous entry (Transporter 3). Some movies sounded as exciting as watching paint dry (W. Frost-Nixon)So here is one talk-backers 2 cents on what was truly bad this year, keeping in mind that the #1 turd was DOOMSDAY. Doomsday. 10,000 BC. Diary of the Dead. Paranoid Park (Good Lord I cannot even remember what the hell it was about. Oh, thats right. It wasn't about anything.)Son of Rambow (In concept, should have been great. In reality, it was grade C-). Thats it!

Capone, you have your head up your ass. Gayer than a 3 dollar bill. How you could lump a masterpiece like FC in your worst list is unforgivable. Vince Vaughn's portrayal of Brad is absolutely spot-on the best portrayal of the suffering-boyfriend-amidst-pot ential-in-laws-at-Christmastim e that I have ever seen. It totally raised the bar on Christmas comedies and gave us all something we'd never seen but only dreamed of until now. From now on, no one can play Brad except Vaughn. NO ONE. From the daring opening sequence with the daylight shopping spree, I was on the edge of my seat. The fight scenes between Vaughn and Favreau were epic, and I thought Reese Witherspoon is much better than Katie What's Her Name. THIS is the way Christmas comedies SHOULD be done from now on. And I think it was Harry who said it's the best sci-fi in years; I could not agree more. There's real magic in that movie. The kind that shapes and changes a person. Not too many films can do that these days.

Really. Actually, it fell apart when the fembot Eve reciprocates Wall-E's amorous emotions. Where did that come from?

Basically, Wall_E felt to me like a lame take on Star Wars, if R2D2 saved the universe instead of Luke.

Prior to Wall-e falling into complete silliness, the first twenty minutes I give you were at once charming, haunting, beautiful. Then it gets stupid. And I felt sorry for overweight people in the audience.

X-files may have its problems but it definitely doesn't deserve to be in the company of stuff like Dungeon Seige and 10000 BC. Its worlds better than every movie on that list even if you found it boring or the villians seemed a little underdeveloped. Just by virtue of its atmosphere and acting its in a different league than all those others. It might be worth putting on a list of "biggest dissapointments" but not worst films.

The dialogue didn't really offend me... there was some shaky dialogue in the opening... but I thought the Indy/Mutt scene in the bar was cool, and the Marion/Indy stuff was cute. However I saw the Mummy 3 and almost threw up in my own lap. There's a movie I had no expectations for, and it was still awful. The dialogue between Fraser and his son was just headache inducing. Indy 4 did have a few REALLY bad scenes, but those involved CG, not dialogue.

But putting it down as worst of 2008 is just ridiculous and completely over the top. Yes the film had big problems but also had just as many fantastic ideas and technical achievements that, on an objective "this film is better made than that film" it's impossible for it to top anyones "worst of" list. Look at your worst of list and tell me there's nothing you would less like to watch again than SR?

Also a lot of people that criticise it for being "splosion" filled were hte people who shot their load all over Transformers, which was a much worse film and can be accused of all the faults SR is accused of, plus more.

transformers managed to be shittily mediocre and nobody bats an eyelid. SR is both fantastic and ridiculous and angers people.

Simple filmmaking really, but something that's rarely done because of some kind of stupid industry rule that says the film must only be one person's story. In the beginning of the film, we get to see each of the Racer family's internal pov of what's been bothering this family for years, the death of Rex Racer. Each family member, from Pops down to Chim Chim, is given equal screen time. A sort of democractic communistic way of storytelling if you will. Speed himself isn't given real dialogue until about twenty minutes in when he confronts Royalton. This democratic mode of storytelling is used throughout the whole film. The Wachowskis refuse to let Speed's intensity hijack the film, but let Mom Racer's sweetness have its due, the comedy and zaniness of of Spritle and Chim chim, the seriousness of Racer X, etc. And when needed, the family members actually communicate to one another in ensemble scenes(like at breakfast, or when they argue in the hotel room), something that is totally taken for granted in movies these days.

You know what I love about movies, books, TV shows, and other forms of entertainment? If I like something, it doesn't really matter to me if ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ELSE does. I likes what I likes. It's mah taste y'all. I turned Mummy 3 off about 30 minutes into it, 'cause I did not enjoy anything about it. However, if you can find something to like, awesome for you. That's YOUR taste. Some likes apples, some likes oranges. Some likes fruit cocktail. Me, I likes an entertaining story told well. Normally, if I feel that an author/director/etc achieved what they set out to do, I don't think the book/movie/etc is BAD. I may not like it, but it can still be a successful example of the art form. That said, when a writer/director/whatever has a solid history of successful storytelling, there's a level of expectation. Take Indy 4. Not a bad movie really. Some silliness, yes. But stacked up against the other Indy films, and other Spielberg films, it's not the strongest entry. Just because I was disappointed a bit doesn't mean I'm personally affronted because someone else loves it. It's taste y'all. You can't make me like what I don't, and I don't care if you love what I hate. Uwe Boll your man? Good for you. He spits out movies pretty regularly. You love AVP? Cool. This is America. There's something out there for all of us. I wish I could be more like Harry, and love just about ANYTHING.

Seriously, what are the critics smoking? It was a poorly scripted turd populated with characters so bland that you couldn't even work up enough passion to dislike them. The last hour of that movie is like an endurance test. Fuck, C-span has a better dramatic arc than that pretentious, inflated bore of a film. I got no problem with slow movies, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky and Jean-Pierre Melville have made some of the greatest slow movies of all time. But Ben Button was like paying ten bucks to watch a stranger grow old and die... IN REAL TIME. But with all the funny and interesting parts of their life edited out. Folks, you might as well walk out after the tugboat sinks. After that, it's like watching a goddamned Abercrombie and Fitch ad for an hour and forty-five minutes. And don't get me started on that goddamned hummingbird. Button is by far the most painfully insipid, tortuously boring filmgoing experience in recent memory. Not only is TDK better than Button.. THE INCREDIBLE HULK is better than Button. I'd take any half-assed B monster movie nonsense over that dull, self-important drek. Makeup, movie stars, and Fincher do not automatically add up to a good movie, people. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I had fun watching it and it seemed like it must've been really fun to make. I don't think the movie pretends to be anything other than junkfood for the mind and I like it a lot more than something like Transporter or whatever.
I found a video that describes the way this list makes me feel..

Just pack in the teens, who, because of foolish drinking age restrictions (you can decide which arab to shoot on a battlefield, you can choose the president of the USA, but you can't have a beer) have to go and act like douchebags in movie theaters rather than in clubs.

Holy shit, you have no idea what a slog 'Button' is. It's not even comparable to 'Zodiac', a movie that I loved. The only way you could even compare the two is to visualize it this way: Imagine if they gave the virtually nonexistent Dermot Mulroney character in 'Zodiac' a magic-realist backstory set in New Orleans. And then they edited out everything having to do with the murders and investigations. And then they hired a great actress, just to waste her by casting her as the boring love interest. and then they cut out all of Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey, and Jake Gylenhall's scenes. And then they filmed Mulroney taking a shit for three hours. Looking at your watch? Fuck, you'll be looking for a razor to open up your veins before this thing ends. It's. Fucking. Brutal. Oops, and I almost forgot to mention, there are cheesy CGI hummingbirds, too. ABORT! ABORT!

Watched that last night. And I really don't get what the big deal was? Other then the poster boy for a school shooter, there was nothing interesting about the movie. Also the rich girl being the school bully, and the Bi-polar girl being stupid and crazy. The only funny part was when the one popular kid dated the crazy girl to get more screen time. Also could they have found a whiter school? They had to hire professional actors to play the 2 minority roles seen in the movie. How was that movie considered a documentary? Also Man a Wire, don't get the love, WAYYYY too much shit was glossed over. We get it that French guy is into walking on wires.

I thought Bigger, Faster, Stronger was the best doc I've seen in a long time. Also I dug the fact that this guy managed to put it all together. Makes me realize that I could make a movie.

God American Teen was awful. I can't believe how hard everyone feel for it. The teens in Breakfast Club were more identifiable and realistic then that crap.

This country was founded on shooting people. It is unpatriotic to NOT shoot people! Shootings create jobs... police, EMT's, lawyers, coroners... not to mention the freshly shot person's job, which will need to be filled. I know it's trendy to say you value human life and that murder is wrong, but honestly, what the hell else are you supposed to do with such people? Let them live? Fuck that! At least the guy had the forethought to bring a gun, if not, he would have had to beat that talker to death with his bare hands, and how much more of a distraction would that have been to the other theater patrons?

But it was Seven Pounds and I got bored. Please don't kill me. Also, I don't care if you liked Speed Racer or not, as long as you understand that it slavishly emulates its source material. Crappy dialogue and all. But I have a feeling that people think it was trying to be a proper film, which really isn't the case. It's just a live action version of a shitty 60s anime. I think if more people were a) familiar with the source material and b) actually nostalgic about it, they might like it. If nothing else, it's certainly loud and colorful and follows its source material accurately...

Catapults throwing snakes into cars, that INSANELY fucking annoying kid, a monkey throwing it's feces in a bad guy's face...it was like the "beyond the infinite" sequence of 2001 stretched to 2 1/2 mind-numbing hours. Yes I dare say this! Uh, because it's a matter of opinion. Really neither movie was all that great. I was just in the mood for mindless action and Death Race gave it to me. Speed Racer was a lot of dazzling special effects but after seeing the cars drive on the side of the track 10 times I got over it. And Christina Ricci's head is too big for her body! Adam Sandler needs to maybe think about becoming an actual hairdresser 'cause the last flick he was good in was Punch Drunk Love and he was practically playing himself there. Narnia was very coma inducing as well. Harold and Kumar Dos was also a burb of a film. I liked the song from Semi-Pro more than the movie. Love Guru and Drillbit, man those films should be staked and buried like the celluloid vampires the are. So many bad films to watch and so little time.

Actually, no. The Matrix sequels were just THAT disappointing. They were just THAT MUCH of a let down. They just took all the potential of one of the best sci-fi flicks in many years, even with Kewhoanu, took a giant dump on it, and flushed. IMPO, people keep coming back to how bad they are because we, as geeks and a movie going public, were literally offended and insulted.

The one thing I don't understand is why so many people go to the theater, presumably using their hard earned cash, to see movies that they even THINK might be bad. From the first moment I saw a trailer for Speed Racer I had no desire to ever see that film. Didn't go to the theater, haven't seen it since.

Lets put it this way..I returned from Disneyland on monday, I went on the Indiana Jones ride there 5 times in 2 days, I've ridden it literally dozens of times over the years, I know every last inch of that ride. So when I say that, forgetting the actual ride, that even the act of Standing for 45 minutes in the line for the ride, with thousands of sweaty, screaming, pushy tourists, was a better experience than watching Indy IV, well I hope you can understand the level of suck and fail Indy IV is to me.

There was another film released by WB called "Iron Giant" that completely bombed at the theaters. Box office receipts and how many of your friends saw it is no indicator of a film's quality.

Now in comparison, Speed Racer is a much more daring non-conventional film than Iron Giant, and may never reach a mainstream audience. SR also has the negative stigma the Wachowski Bros. brought w/them from the Matrix sequels. Hence, I don't expect Speed to get some kind of resurrection in the now fast moving home video market. But whatever. I know what a great film is, and Speed Racer is a great fucking film. F*** Capone's list. You can't trust anybody from Chicago...

I, like so many other people here, have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark so many times I can recite it word for word and yet I can't find my car keys half the time! What did Indy IV do? It made Temple of Doom look like freakin' Schindler's List! It introduced a dopey son. Hell, fine he has a kid, but Shia, the flavor of the month?! And I would have thought they could've done better with him getting back with Marion, but they managed to blow that too. And the crystal skulls gimmick was hokey even by the fantastic Indy standards. Clearly, they waited too long to make the sequel. Ford did alright, but 10 or 15 years ago it would have been awesome as he would have looked vigorous as opposed to tired. This was the biggest letdown of 2008 by far. This movie was so bad that I had to retire my Raiders of the Lost Ark ringtone because kept associating it with the new movie! To be honest, the ringtone didn't last more than a day as I didn't realize how quickly I'd get sick of hearing that instead of a phone ringing. But I digress, Indy IV sucked and hopefully a reboot will happen rather than another sequel or a, *gulp*, Indy Jr. series of films.

Stallone should be ashamed of himself making this movie and trying to use a real situation as a background for this film. A film that's only character development of it's main character was a flashback to the first film. All I keep hearing from people who loved Rambo was how cool the action was and if anybody doesn't like it how much of a fag they are. Go suck a herpes infected maggot covered rhino cock you wanker. Rambo was indeed violence for violence sake. And what's your point? You do know that the majority of films nominated for Oscars are built solely for the purpose of winning awards, right? So if you can have a film that only exists to take home Oscar gold, then why not a movie that is over-the-top violence just the sake of over-the-top violence?

And the only reason dickheads like you slam the character development is because it has the name "Rambo", and that elitism 101. There was just as much character development in Rambo as there was in The Dark Knight. Hell, more even. At least when Rambo went apeshit, I believed it. I can't say the same for Harvey Dent.

Once again, I can understand people not liking Speed Racer but to say it's worse than a Paris Hilton film? Nah, critic card revoked. The only thing you should be reviewing is shampoo.

Dude, get over it. You're the one who comes out swinging. You said Stallone should be ashamed for making the movie. Dude, that's insulting. He made a darn good action movie. If you don't like it, then say you don't like it. But don't say the writer-director should be ashamed and that the only people who enjoyed the movie are slope-headed neanderthals.

Don't fire a salvo if you aren't prepared for the return fire. This is AICN. Things get harsh.

People tend to think that somehow worst movie up for for debate. Can't we easily see which film was a technical disaster? Worst acting? Worst FX? Worst direction? Worst Music? Worst writing? Speed Racer had none of those things. in fact it tugged at my inner child. 10,000 B.C. made me want to claw my eyes out. You should have your geek license revoked for hating Speed Racer. Critics are dicks. But I expect at LEAST for fellow movie lovers and geeks to love the fuck outta speed racer. But that's my point. If it's magnetic to non-magnetic items, then why stop at gold and gunpowder? Why not show kittens and pools of water circling around the warehouse? Choosing which non-magnetic items are going to be attracted to a magnetic device is writing the rules as you go along, and everyone knows that's a cardinal sin in cinema.

Even an Indiana Jones movie needs some boundaries. If you're just going to make stuff up as you go along, then you might as well go all the way.

I love the staunch speed racer defence. Hilarious

I saw a lot of movies this year. Most were entertaining but had no lasting effect. Harrison Ford driving an open-front truck though the jungle as the branches slap him in the face? Haven't we seen this before? TDK was a spectacle. It wasn't instantly forgettable but not really that memorable either. Movie math: youtube+Godzilla=Cloverfield. I saw it. It was OK. Where are we going for dinner? A movie critic who has to see several movies a day once said the highest compliment he could give a movie is "I would see it again". I'm not a movie critic just a busy guy. What would I see again? Let The Right One In. An 11-year old, completely serious, deadly vampire moves in next door? That's something new. And well done. Can't wait for the DVD. There will be an English-language remake. I will have to see it and afterwards will wish I had Ebola instead.

Capone, I really enjoy your reviews, your interviews and I more or less agree with about every title in your Best and Worst-list, but really, putting "victim" in quotes is just sickening beyond repair. Yeah, I hate people talking during movies as well, but there is no justification - none whatsoever - for SHOOTING somebody in a movie theatre for talking, texting, fucking or whatever he or she may be doing while a movie is playing. Seriously, if Fox only allowed ONE screening of Watchmen EVER and the film would be destroyed after that, and you happened to get tickets to that particular screening and then some douchebag decided to talk through the entire thing, then STILL it wouldn't give you the right to shoot that person.

I'm not defending Speed Racer. How many times haven't I said I can understand people not liking it?

I loathed, on a level I didn't think possible, both Crystal Skull and The Dark Knight. For me, to call them shit is an insult to shit. But deep down I realize I can't let my disappointment with each elevate my opinion of movies that were actually worse.

In the end, as much as I want to call Indy 4 the worst movie of the year, I realize that title has to go to a more worthy candidate like Love Guru or Sex and the City. I enjoyed 30 seconds of Indy, I can't say the same for the other two.

And any movie critic worth a damn would admit there were far worse cinematic abortions this year than Speed Racer.

Surprisingly good performances. The line reading puts confidence in me that we can put actors in front of green screen and get something great out of them. Despite what Lucas spent 6 years destroying. The classic evil corporation versus the little guy is a classic tale and speed gets it right on all levels. The ending gets me every time. Its so good to see Speed win against all odds. "Get that shit off my track" just wins the film for me. The film is fun, it has style, the music is classic, and the direction is inspired. The wachowskis wanted to make a live action anime and got it right where so many have got it wrong.

Ummmm, nooooooooo. Kittens and water are MORE metallic than gunpowder. What is gunpowder? Potassium nitrate. Zero metal. Sulfur. Zero metal. Charcoal. Maybe an atom of two of metal, depending on the carbon it was derived from.

Water and kittens on the other hand, FULL of metals. Iron, calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium, cobalt.

And yes, they DID make the rules as they went along. The skulls attract gunpowder from the other side of the warehouse, but not rifles that are two feet away. So they gave the skull SELECTIVE magnetism. That's making the rules up to suit your needs.

Wooden acting from otherwise dependable cast...If memory serves me correct the deliverance of the lines from the cartoon were just as wooden. Cg overload and complete lack of realism at any level creating a real feeling of cold souledsness? Once again, if memory serves me correctly the cartoon was a complete overload of color and lack of realism. Terrible dialogue...Funny, the cartoon featured that same terrible dialog. What the bashers of Speed Racer are failing to comprehend is the movie was just taking the goofy, quirky, sometimes awful idiosyncrasies from the cartoon. Chances are at around 100% that if you hated the cartoon, you hate the movie. If you can at least watch a few episodes of the cartoon without pulling your hair out, you'll enjoy the movie. Generally the biggest complaint about a film is that it didn't stay true to the source. In the case of Speed, it's getting criticized for staying SO true to the source.

movie of the year. Didn't like it? Fine. But how can you justify it being worse than those you put in the #2 spot? You say "It physically hurts me to watch so many people try so hard to entertain me and come up with something so astonishingly mediocre." Is that worse than a movie like Disaster Movie, where no on tried and they came up with something so predictably terrible?

I disagree with those that believe Disaster Movie gets a pass because no one expected it to be anything other than awful. Any film with a $10 million or more budget is playing in the big leagues and should be held to the same standard as everything else. Disaster movie was the 4th film for those guys and had a budget of $20 million. I would rather see a dozen films like Speed Racert (films that tried and failed) than see one more Disaster Movie type movie (no one tries and no one cares about the quality of the finished product, all they care about it a quick cash-grab).

And another thing: Speed Racer had Richard Roundtree; Disaster Movie had Kim Kardashian. It is not possible that any movie with Shaft is worse than one with that amateur porn pseudo-celebrity.

I'm guessing you did not see The Hottie & The Nottie (few did it seems). When released many critics didn't just hail it as the worst movie of the year but the worst movie of all time. I wonder Capone, if you had seen Paris Hilton's magnus opus, would you still have listed Speed Racer as the worst movie of 2008?

While most films will lose the fans they had over time because in reality they weren't that great(wall-e, the dark knight,), but people are afraid to admit that because of what their peers will think, and most people want to fit in and not rock the boat. But, SPEED RACER was a great film, a film that some people said they didn't like because their friends said it wasn't good, and they don't want to be the oddball saying that they like it. Well, in time SPEED RACER will gather MILLIONS of fans when other films lose theirs. More and more people will come out of the closet "so to speak" involving speed racer.

You saw the trailers, realized it wasn't T2: WE WUB WOO ROBODADDY, and decided to hate it. It would be different if you saw it and hated it, then your opinion would have some validity. As it stands, you just seem silly.

I thought it was fuckin' great, but I can understand why some people hated it. It's loud, fast, colorful, psychedelic and totally insane; a popart explosion of awesome, and therefore perhaps too much for some people (especially senior citizens). Also, its way too long -- shoulda been 90 minutes tops. But other than that, its pretty much a dead-on adaptation of the loopy insanity of the original anime. Probably would've been better if it was done cheaper, more geared to adults, and campier / more 60s retro, but I still think the way it was done was pretty friggin' cool and unlike anything I've ever seen. I wouldn't call it a "great" movie, but I loved it.

Oh, and yes, I say "some people hated it" because most people WHO ACTUALLY BOTHERED TO SEE IT (a rather small number since, as the numbers show, almost nobody even bothered to see it when it was in the theaters), liked it a whole helluva lot. Everyone I know who has seen it since on DVD say how much they love it. Hmm... exactly as I knew it would.

It's this generations TRON -- a movie TOO FAR AHEAD of the curve. Expect a reboot in 10, 20 years when its been firmly established as a beloved cult fave.

Also, Motoko, you might want to take the time to actually watch the thing. Then feel free to hate it as much as you need to.

"And yes, they DID make the rules as they went along. The skulls attract gunpowder from the other side of the warehouse, but not rifles that are two feet away. So they gave the skull SELECTIVE magnetism. That's making the rules up to suit your needs."

And let's not forget that a wooden crate was not enough to stop the non-magnetic gunpowder from being attracted from the far side of the warehouse but it WAS enough to stop the metallic lights from being pulled towards the skull. Once it was removed from the wooden crate, however, all the lights were pulled towards it as it was moved. Ridiculous.

I just really don't understand how this movie can even be compared to the previous ones. I've now seen this movie at least 6 times (I know, I'm a sucker for punishment) and it actually gets worse with each viewing rather than better. What originally seemed like missteps now come across as huge blundering pratfalls. The original movies were B-movie setups with A-movie writing, performances and execution. Indy 4 is a C-movie with B-movie writing, performances and execution. Even good actors are reduced to giving bad performances because the script they were given was so horrendous.

And as for people who try to excuse the bad FX because 'they were intending to make a 50's B-movie', I don't buy it ... not for a second. If they were really going for a 50's B-movie than they should have used crappy practical effects rather than obviously bad CG effects that look like little cartoons composited onto the screen. Crappy CG compositing and backgrounds does not give the feeling of a 50's B-movie in the least.

I can't really comment on the cartoon series as I never watched most of the vintage episodes besides I'm more inclined to check out the original Japanese incarnation: Mach Go GO.American's had a habit of butchering japanese cartoons in order to cater to 7 year olds (with the noted exception of Robotech) and I'm sure the original version of Mach/Speed Racer had darker overtones.

if you guys like the movie for what it was "originally" intended to be, then fine.As for me I lost all patience with this as well as most Anime-to-Live action films. After the shitfest that was Casshern and devilman..Never again!!

All things must be taken into consideration. I'm talking budget, the caliber of talent involved, and the previous films. When you factor that in with some of the worst dialogue I've ever heard, shit casting, shit photography, shit music (how do you make an Indiana Jones score sound like ass?!!) and an overall horrid viewing experience-- then yes. This is by far the worst film of the year. Obviously you'd be a fuck idiot to compare Indy IV to Hottie And The Nottie. Hottie was made for the budget for Shia's nose powder, and I'm pretty sure it was never intended to be decent. If the filmmakers themselves really can give a fuck about the finished product, than it shouldn't be judged the same. The Beards set out to make the pivotal Indiana Jones film for "THE FANS." They really thought they were gonna go end up with a classic with this piece of shit.

I'm not going to comment on the motives of Steve and George, but I don't think it's fair to Ford say his motive was greed. He's been saying since the very early 90's that he would play Indy again "in a New York minute" because he enjoyed the character so much. My feeling about Ford in this movie is that he just really wanted a chance to play Indy again and this seemed like it might be the only chance he was gonna get, so he did the best he could with what he was given. If this script came along 8 years ago, I'd bet you he would have said no way and waited for a better one, but after 10 years of script rewrites with none of the scripts being stellar (even Darabont's wasn't great, but George deserves a huge portion of blame for forcing the alien storyline) I think he just gave in and did the only Indy movie it seemed he could. The result was an extremely sub-par Indy movie. As a fan it makes me sick to watch, but I also don't feel I can blame Ford for his choice because I probably would have done the same thing if I were in his position.

From the perspective of budget, years it took to make, the pedigree of the actors, director, producers and film crew, Indy 4 was the worst movie of the year.

It took me a long time to finally admit to myself The Love Guru was a worse movie, but that script wasn't 19 years in the making, Jessica Alba isn't exactly a thespian and who the hell is Marco Schnabel.

The Love Guru had nothing going for it. Indy 4 had the world going for it. It didn't need to be world altering but it wasn't even slightly entertaining. How can something with Ford, Spielberg, Lucas, Williams, Marshall, Kennedy and Kaminski not be entertaining? That's a bigger crime Madoff's ponzi scheme.

The 4th installment, however, seemed to try so hard at conjuring-up the feel of those old school movies that it actually took a few steps backward. While I'm sure there were people who loved the movie--- and I personally liked the fact that Ford got another run, along with Lebouf getting such an opportunity--- folks like me actually watched much of the movie in disbelief. I was really trying to like it up to the point where Ford pulled out that silly-looking crystal skull. At that point, I "got" it, but just didn't like it. Maybe I'll appreciate the film after some time passes, though.

WTF was wrong with T2? Bad acting from the kid maybe but it was still in at least the top 5 action movies of the 1990's. Too bad T3 had to shit all over its conclusion, just as Alien^3 shit all over Aliens. If any Cameron film needed to be shat upon it's Titanic, where Leo turns out to be alive, only to be shot in the face by Billy Zane. But I digress.

But yeah, the GnR song kicked ass.

Uhhh no. T2 is garbage. Its as it was written by an actual machine trying to replicate human emotion. That Father/Son thing....yuck. Even my 13 year old self found it to be corny.

The photography is bland. Everything is blue....oooooooooh, amazing! And the score?! Uhhhhh. Yeah. They kept the same notes. Dropped the cheap synth shit and put in heavy percussion. Genius, absolutely genius!! The effects in The Abyss are better and the morph in Willow still kicks everyone else's ass. So fuck off T2.

I'll CERTAINLY admit that I haven't seen SR yet, and maybe never will. Having said that, I'll still ALSO admit that there was definitely worse movies released in 2008. Thankfully, I didn't see them either. In regards to Indy, I don't think it was one of the worst movies of the year, just one of the biggest disappointments. And there is definitely a HUGE difference there. UNfortunately, I did see The Happening, and that may be one of the worst movies EVER, not just of 08. Rambo, personally, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely a Rambo movie, and some of us really wanted/needed that. T2, I have to agree, TERRIBLE acting from "the kid". At the time, when I was MUCH younger, seeing it in the theater, I thought it was pretty cool. But now his acting just takes me right out of the suspension of disbelief. I just don't dig it anymore. It's got some great parts, but on the whole I don't believe it comes anywhere near the greatness of the first film. And I refuse to watch the third one again. WTH was the point of making that pile? Looking forward to the new one - quite a lot actually.

Interesting take. I wish I hadn't read it before I saw BB. I'm still going to see it, though. Because I love Pitt and Fincher and it looks interesting to me. I don't mind that it may be slow - I dig slow, meditative movies. I also like every actor in the dang thing. So I'm wondering if that's what it comes down to. Maybe I'm going in predisposed to the fact that I'm going to like it. Can't say for sure, but I know I'm going to check it out this weekend.

Look, I resorted to vulgarity because this is AICN. And let's face it, most of us were already on a roll. Capone set the tone for a flame war the instant he shoved his head up his arse and pegged Speed Racer as the year's worst.

But you came out like a mad dog, albeit a literate mature mad dog, when you both insulted Stallone and fans of the movie. If you're going to insinuate that the sole reason I enjoyed the movie was because there was more dismemberment than the Spanish Inquisition and I rubbed raw hamburger over my chest and howled like a coyote whenever a head popped off, then you best be prepared for the thunder.

As violent as Rambo is, it isn't torture porn. It wasn't some hack twisted fuck director having a bunch of innocent teenagers sliced and diced for the audiences sick amusement. It was a bunch of Burmese scumbags (who stood in for just about any group of savages killing innocent people around the globe at any given moment) getting their just desserts. It felt good. It was therapeutic.

Guys like me can either spend hundreds prattling away our worries and fears to some quack, or we can rent Rambo and come out cured of what ails us.

Save for Obama getting elected and Bush preparing to leave office, it was a terrible year. The little guy got screwed over by the big evil empire of greed and corruption. There's no such thing as bad people getting what they deserve in the news. That ain't real life, son. So when a filmmaker can give me 90 minutes of stand up and cheer retribution, I'll take it in all it's organ grinding glory.

I would have rather the villains be completely fictitious actually-- like on a fake island or something. Because to me, understanding the conflict in Burma, I wasn't so pumped up by the end. Cameron had to shoot down and dirty, using everything but the kitchen sink to achieve his goal. It gave it a grit and realism that T2 ("we can fix that in post with more money") didn't have. I just don't think it holds a candle to T1. And for me it's mostly Edward Furlong that caused that problem. Also, in retrospect, while the T1000 was a cool affect, it is kind of weird that Arnie is all of a sudden the good guy, once again facing the unstoppable foe. I would have rather seen somebody else, or something else, sent back from the future to protect JC and still have Arnie be the threat. That's one of the many things that's so frickin' cool about the first one; he's the bad guy!

I hated it when it came out. I thought betrayed everything awesome about The Terminator (which I LOVED and saw in the theatre several times the summer it came out). The only thing T2 had going for it were the effects, which, for the time, were groundbreaking. Everything else? Medicore to awful at best. I still remember my ex-girlfriend and I seeing it that summer and just tearing it apart laughing our asses off at how bad it was. Its just a bad movie, and I think most of you that cling to it, you probably saw that before you saw the first one, you were probably very young, and it left an indelible impression on you. Understandable. But watch it again, and tell me what you think. Its not a good movie. They're might be some fun set-pieces? But those set-pieces are indistinguishable from any Michael Bay movie. Thats right, T2 committed the original sin:

T2 is the template of the Michael Bay aesthetic.

T2 is so much more than just a bunch of great set pieces. The movie has great pace and flow. The art direction, particularly the robot and cyberdyne stuff, is some of the best ever, in my opinion. The sound design is awesome. "Daddy terminator" extends the idea that John Connor's life is inexorably tied to the future war with the machines. Finally there are a bunch of quiet moments the likes of which you don't get from Cameron wannabes like Michael Bay (who gets too much shit but I am not a Bay defender).

There some films where you either love it or hate with passion. This film definitely sits in that exclusive niche. I loved it and is one of my favourite films of the year. I watched it about 4 times. Kung Fu Panda is my most watched movie so I guess that's my number 1. Dark Knight is in my top 5 along with Cloverfield. And thank god I never had high hopes for Indy 4, unlike most of the rest of the fucking world because I ended up really fucking enjoying it. It was fun. What the fuck was everyone expecting? A radically serious kickass pioneer like Raiders? Get fucking real. This was an Indy film much like the third one and is in my top 10 fun night out at the cinema. Worst fucking movie were The Happening and Day the Earth Stood Still. Actually they are not the worst but given the talent involved they were fucking shameful. Name that film: A white man is born fatherless in the south with birth defects that lead many to think he may never walk nor live a normal life. His saintly mother believes in his potential anyway. At a young age, the man learns to walk and sheds his exoskeleton of locomotive aids. Around this time, he also meets the love of his life, a vivacious girl who grows into a bold woman who parts ways with the man to have her own wild adventures. Meanwhile, the man reaches adulthood, and puts in a wartime stint in the U.S. military. During this stint, the man proves at first an indifferent asset, but during his one firefight, he turns out to be very valuable, saving the day singlehandedly, while also witnessing the death of one of his best friends. The man also spends much time on a small ocean vessel, serving alongside a rowdy, grizzled, hard-drinking man of the sea. This salty sailor serves as one of our man’s two best male friends; the other is a black man who first teaches our man the lessons of friendship before departing forever.

During their brief time together, they conceive a child. The couple part ways, due to the woman’s perceived inability to take care of the man. The entire story dwells repeatedly on the theme of life’s uncertainty and, in contrast, on the notion of fate or coincidence. The film’s symbol for these themes is a small object seen hovering improbably in the air. A narrative frame scene punctuates the story, as does the main character’s drawling voice-over. Using his skills to blow shit up onscreen, Michael Bay takes down the hostage takers and blows shit up for real!!! And in the end, he even manages to kill all the hostages and blow up the entire world. Now that movie, is guaranteed to kick ass..also in IMAX and 3D!!!

I thought 'Speed Racer' looked like a hot mess. But now that I've seen that you wrote in TDK as one of the worst films, and listed BENJAMIN-HOW-DERIVATIVE-AND-TR ITE-AND -FUCKING-BORING-BUTTON as #1, I can't help but deem you the Bizarro movie critic of the year. You're so wrong in every way, that I'm forced to reevaluate my instincts and give Speed Racer a chance. It may be bad, but it can't possibly be as dull and intelligence-insulting as 'Button'. And this is coming from someone who usually loves David Fincher movies.

..In their unwavering praise of 'Benjamin Button'. It would be one thing if the movie was just a rehash of 'Gump'. But it's much, much worse. 'Button' has all the trite sentiment and contrived characters of 'Gump', but without the entertainment value or the exciting set-pieces. It's got all of the lame hollywood cliches minus any of the crowd-pleasing action and romance. It. Fucking. Sucks. AICN, you are now dead to me. Plus, you all jizzed over 'Tropic Thunder'. I just caught it on DVD, and it doesn't live up to the hype. All the actors deliver, but it's pretty clear that Ben Stiller can't direct his way out of a wet paper bag. It wasn't bad, but any movie that includes Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Tom Cruise in a fat suit, and Robert Downey Jr. playing an Australian playing a black dude should be so much more than 'okay'. With that cast and that setup, only a jackass could fail to make it a classic. And yet, it was mostly 'meh'.
Best Film: Slumdog Millionnaire

If this film is beaten by the awful, contrived, bland Benjamin Button, I will scream. Slumdog Millionnaire was 100 times the films BB was. Walking out of a film that good is like a euphoric high. Walking out of BB is like being told you have two weeks to live. Emotional. Yes. But fucking awful. TDK, at this stage, is my second favourite. You don't have to love it, or even like it. But to put it down as one of the worst films this year is just trying to get attention and make a point. It's childish and pretty fucking clueless.

I don't know how but I honestly felt that motherfucker dragged. Maybe it was me. Dev Patel was cute as shit and all, and there was wonderful music, and I love Danny Boyle but I think it is the least of his films that I've seen (I've yet to see MILLIONS or THE BEACH). It's easily his most accessible though, which is probably why it's become so huge. My mother who couldn't possibly stomach any of his other films raced across the street afterwards to buy the SLUMDOG OST. My mother, buying M.I.A.!

What the fucking fuck? I thought Capone was using the word metaphorically. I didnt know this person actually fucking shot someone. Capone, that was way over the fucking line even for this fucking vagabond site. There is no way, someone like that should even get an ounce of merit. Even if you didnt mean it that way (but something about the way you put it makes me think you actually fucking meant it) but even as a joke is fucking senseless and insensitive, and makes you a fucking demented idiot. I expect that kind of comment in a TB but not from one of the host. Remove that fucking statement, man. I am feeling embarrassed to be ever attached to this morally incompetent site. I used to think this really was a cool site. I told my friends about it over a decade ago now, and for a while, they used to all read it, then one by one they ceased reading it, telling me its too nasty, sadistic. I tell them its all part of the fun and its only in the TB, it gets nasty but they tell it aint the TB its fucking Harry & co but I didnt think so though I knew where they were coming from. I am the only one still reading this site amongst my UK movie loving friends and deep down I now think they are right. Somehow, I dont actually enjoy visiting here as much as before yet I still do as some kind of ritual. I like Quints AMAD, and the sometimes cool news but think I may have made my last post now. There are cooler more better controlled sites than this, only I have to watch my fucking language, that all. I just feel dirty and embarrassed to be associated with statements such as Capone's.

The kind of guy who shoots someone for talking in a movie
by Big Jim
Jan 1st, 2009

is the same kind of person who shoots someone that told them to stop talking in a movie. This guy is not some righteous vigilante, looking out for the little guy, no Robin Hood/Dirty Harry hybrid. This is some nut with a gun who, mildly frustrated with someone, shot him. Hell, if it weren't the guy talking in the movie, it would have been the guy who accidently bumped into him at the mall, or the lady who didn't get out of his way fast enough getting off an elevator, or the crying kid sitting across from him on the bus.

Capone, have him at all your screenings and enjoy being the only two in the theatre. You just better hope the movie starts at the exact moment he is ready (no sooner or later), or that his popcorn is fresh enough and his drink isn't warm, or too cold, and you'd better watch your back if you happen to sneeze or breath too loud or don't laugh at the right moment (or worse, you laugh at the wrong moment). Have fun.

I wouldn't put it on my WORST OF list but it was pretty disappointing. Eric Roth didn't "crack" the script...he just stole from his own work on FORREST GUMP. Every time they cut back to the hospital room and Cate Blanchett started talking in her "old lady voice", I giggled uncontrollably. She modulates her voice in an attempt to sound older but it is just ridiculous. And Julia Ormond--film obscurity is calling and wants to know when you'll be back. (Hopefully soon.)

I appreciate your attempt to flame me but you couldn't be more wrong. I wanted an X-FILES movie that didn't tread the same water we've already seen a dozen times. I would have liked the choices Mulder and Scully made at the end of the series and FTF to have held true so that their characters could move forward in the supposed story to come. I would have preferred a movie that didn't involve a side-plot that did absolutely nothing for the film. I would have preferred to have seen a movie that didn't have a main plot handled so poorly that it made some of the later series' episodes look brilliant.

But most importantly, I would have liked to have seen a film that didn't suck. A film that didn't have its main character looking like he was asleep the entire time or the other one looking like she thought she as acting in something else.

If you can point out a genuine moment of tension or drama in that movie, I'll eat my hat. But the fact is, I know you can't. The film doesn't hold a candle to FTF (or any numerous episodes for that matter) and it has nothing to do with FOX or 'splosions.

And I sure would like to know how/why you think FTF is an "insignificant" movie. Especially in the context of the overall franchise (i.e. the alien conspiracy - the backbone of the series). Sheer lunacy.

You felt flamed?! I "flamed" your taste and bland arguments, not you. Now, on to your points. I think I know why the sequel got criticized so much. TIMEWARP might be the answer. Geeks wanted M & S to be back in the FBI, fighting the aliens, being, you know, the heroes. Doesn't seem like a plausible scenario, because of what happened to the characters and the somewhat limited possibilities of action. The second film takes that into account. The characters are given a chance to mull things over, to grapple with their doubts, and to make a conscious choice at the end. It's called character progression, especially in the case of Scully. The regenerated M & S will be able to handle the colonization in the third film, if it happens. The "side" plot is very important. The film is about believing and about the motivations for the choices we think are right. Just like other characters in the story, Scully wants to do the right thing, but at what cost? Acting? You expected Duchovny to be fully energized? ;) Whatever. I'm not his fan, but I have to say he was quite affecting. Anderson wasn't acting in "something else": she played a character who in the course of 6 years progressed quite a bit, but remained the same Scully we've always known - a sceptic with a big heart. Notice that when Scully wants out, it's not because she's a coward, but because she sees a chance of saving the boy from terminal illness, and Mulder from the darker consequences of his obsession. That's the Scully I remember and respect. Tension? Plenty of it, between S & M, and the priest. Not the explosive tension you seem to enjoy in the Hollywood-friendly FTF (yeah, insignificant, full of plotholes, and when you think about the first episode of the 6th series, FTF practically didn't happen ;) - sheer lunacy on the part of CC and co, wouldn't you say?). It was the real tension, stemming from the history those characters shared, and the circumstances which made their choices so difficult. Bon appetit with that hat of yours. ;P

Reason for SPEED RACER's length
by Chishu_Ryu
Jan 1st, 2009

The Wachowskis like doing things in episodes. The Speed Racer film was basically structured around several "episodes", just like the animated series, where a storyline centered on a particular race, like the Casa Christo, would take two episodes to unfold. While there was still a basic throughline for the film's storyline, the film broke away from the basic three act structure, and told the story in episodes. These episodes were all divided by a particular race or parts of a race. So, if you look at the film, not as a typical movie that gets over and one with in hour and half, but is an adventure told over several episodes, just like the Speed racer animated series was, then the the two hours and half length makes sense. Plus, there's just more to love...

...I'm still waiting to eat my hat. :^)

Love this one though: "Tension? Plenty of it, between S & M, and the priest."

Really? You mean the same tension between Mulder and Scully that's been there since the beginning? The tension that's been resolved only to be dug up again for the convenience of a new film like IWTB? How is that tension when we already know what they're going to do and say? We've seen it before and it played like old hat (pun intended!).

As for the pedo-priest, he was an interesting character that went nowhere. His story and abilities were wasted on another plot that was a complete bust in the creep-factor department. And I guess we were just supposed to accept a random and "creepy" plot detail like blood oozing from his eyes, right?

Quote: "Not the explosive tension you seem to enjoy in the Hollywood-friendly FTF"

You need to do a better job of explaining what it is that you seen to think I'm getting out of FTF here. You're painting with a rather broad brush assuming that what I found entertaining has everything to do with 'splosions and/or special effects.

And simply calling FTF "insignificant" doesn't make it so. How you can form that opinion, cite the S6 ep, and yet forget the series' conclusion is rather strange. But it's like I said before, the movie's events center around the story that has been the franchise backbone since its premier. It moved the characters (main and supporting) forward, the alien conspiracy forward, and the relationship of Mulder and Scully forward. And quite frankly, it's a better crafted film - both in story and in directorial execution.

After such a long franchise hiatus, Carter should have known his own creation a little better and trusted his audience a little more. If he was going to make a stand-alone film, he needed to give them something to genuinely care about. In my opinion, there is very little of that in IWTB.

I think the movies we like say as much about us as they do about the films. Movies are a subjective experience so when you critic the film you are revealing a lot about your own worldviews. I like the type people who really enjoyed Speed Racer. I enjoyed the Dark Knight moderately, but I really don't understand what the fuss is all about; the comics had touched on many of the same themes decades ago. Now, the Fall, that was a great film that I haven't heard enough good about. It mesmerizes the viewer from start to finish. Thanks for the list Capone, nice work.

See it not as a cute movie about saving the enviornment, but a scifi film about a dystopian future. One in which humans have become little more than automatons doing what they're told, one where creative free-thinkers are imprisoned and locked up away from society so that they can't disrupt the status quo. One that requires a robot who has broken free of his programming and evolved beyond what was expected of him to teach humanity how to live, how to break free of the opression that has kept them slaves for long. The movie is about revolution, man.

Hey -I liked it too but... you don't watch many movies, do you Capone?

Show me one scene when the cg eyes looked absolutely real. They weren't as zombie-like as Fincher's tests with Orville Redenbacher by any means, but... And Katrina made the movie for you? I wouldn't have pegged you as a jingoistic American who's clueless as to the other disasters happening outside your own country at the same time - where the deaths from flooding and earthquakes dwarfed Orleans. I'm not pissing on N.O. (rather trying to get you to realise not just American deaths are important) but Jesus Christ man, how did placing so much weight on Katrina in a 'timeless' (yes I'm aware of that irony) fable really serve the story? An unnamed storm would've served the metaphor just as well without being so on-the-nose (which I thought was what you admired about the film). If there'd been an actual storm in New Orleans at the time Button was 'born', then that would've been satisfying & appropriate in it's symmetry. And tied in with the Lightning gag. Never pegged you for a breast-beater.

Having said all that...

My opinion of 'Button' is unlikely to change. Except that I may grow to appreciate the unintentional comedy of Cate Blanchett's 'old southern lady' voice. God I love her, but Fincher seems to have directed her into her first bad performance. Now, The Dark Knight certainly has its flaws, but its subtext alone makes it far more interesting than 'Button', which is a generic exercise in oscar-baiting. A brutally dull one, at that. And 'Button' doesn't have a single character that's nearly as compelling as Ledger's Joker. His scenes in the interrogation room and the hospital were worth the price of admission. No offense to the memory of Brandon Lee, but he was no Heath Ledger. And I never liked the Crow. it set itself up as an action movie, with an indestructible hero. How suspenseful is that? And yet, I'd still recommend 'The Crow' over 'Benjamin Button'. Anything's more engaging than three hours of Brad Pitt watching paint dry while everyone goes around narrating in folksy voices about people who seem to live 100 years without developing a single interesting personality trait.

wasn't that great. Mickey Rourke was playing Mickey Rourke, that wasn't a stretch. I did find the day to day interesting on how he tried to look the same, and his work at the deli counter. However, that speech at the end seemed forced and how in the world are people in the strip club NOT excited about Marissa Tomei? She is hot! It seemed unbelievable that people weren't going after her. The movie was interesting, but one of the best of the year? I'm not so sure.

...let me just add that you're pretty much an asshole here, Capone. Someone who gets shot, particularly under these circumstances, is not a "victim." They are a victim, no quotations. On the list of offenses to the rest of mankind, talking during a movie is not in the top 50. You know what is though? Shooting someone! I also find it interesting that you've conveniently ducked your head in the sand since and won't respond to anyone else here who has called you out. Personally, I've got a better solution. I'm not reading one of your articles ever again. I don't care what it's about, if I see your name, I'm not reading it. I hope you do invite that guy to one of your screenings and he shoots you in the arm. Asshole.

...the fucking scumbag that shot the father of three wasn't even the one that said to shut up. He was just quick to get in there and pop some fucking shots off.

What a fucking scumbag. They should cut this fucker's balls off and throw him naked, out of a helicopter over the Iraq desert. Fucking piece of shit.

---------PHILADELPHIA — An Iraq veteran charged in a Christmas night shooting over noisy moviegoers fired in self-defense, his lawyer said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, is charged with firing a shot that broke the arm of Woffard Lomax Jr. inside a movie theater during a screening of the film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

A judge on Wednesday ordered Cialella held for trial on aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and related charges. The judge tossed out an attempted murder charge over a prosecutor's objections.

Lomax, 31, told the judge he was at the movie with his girlfriend and her three teenagers, enjoying the film and laughing, when a man in front of him _ not Cialella _ told him to quiet down.

"We can't laugh?" Lomax recalled asking.

A second man threw popcorn at the family, and a brawl ensued. Lomax said he was fighting with the first man when the second man pulled out a gun and fired, striking him in the left arm.

A defense lawyer argued that Cialella was being choked and punched as he tried to break up the fight and fired in self-defense.

"He's a marksman," lawyer Greg Pagano said. "If he wanted to shoot to kill, he would have."

Cialella spent five months in Iraq with the Army before being honorably discharged in September, Pagano said.

Municipal Court Judge Craig M. Washington lowered Cialella's bond from $350,000 to $50,000, but ordered him to remain under house arrest if he is released. It was not immediately clear Thursday whether he had posted bail.

Lomax did not elaborate on his testimony after the hearing.

Police have said Cialella brought a .38-caliber handgun in his waistband to the South Philadelphia megaplex.

If Solace is the gold plated cunt of action movies, I'd hate to see what class of vagina you've been hanging around. No aspersions toward the missess mind you. Solace had the main villian die offscreen. Let me repeat that. The main villian, the chief baddie, the guy Bond defeated, DIED OFFSCREEN, and was mentioned as an afterthought...

In a Bond flick I thought that was unexcusable.

Just curious. Not to defend anyone shooting anyone, but I'm trying to think of a scene in B.BUTTON where the audience is all laughing. Maybeye they were laughing at the fact that Brad Pitts face is superimposed on an old man? Whatever the case, sounds like there were several patrons at that screening that were pretty fed up at whatever this guy and the teens were doing. Right or Wrong, sounds like someone took the law into his own hands. They were probably frustrated that there was NOTHING they could do about the noise. Nada. Zip. Short of walking out, that is, or moving seats if one is available. Though only one man broke the law (unless you count the brawlers), there may have been mitigating circumstances. The Iraq war vet has probably just about had his fill of Bullshit for a lifetime. Long and short of it, if ya dont carry a firearm into the theater, you wont be able to use one when the next inconsiderate bastard pisses you off.

How the hell else could you entertain yourself through that movie's interminable running time, if you couldn't chuckle at the goofy CGI hummingbird, the cliched sassy black supporting characters who are completely stranded by the screenplay, and Cate Blanchett's Foghorn Leghorn imitation? Maybe the other audience members were pissed at the laughing because it had interrupted their naps.

Neither Harry nor Capone seem to see anything wrong with bringing a gun to the movies and shooting someone who annoys you. Everyone knows someone incapable of shutting up for a movie, a play, or whatever. For that matter, everyone knows someone who won't shut up everywhere else, too. Generally, instead of getting shot, such people don't get invited places. It seems if your film quota is high enough on a weekly basis, you earn some sort of moral high-ground from which to say stupid things.

This is the place where people shit-talk and tell others they're going to fuck their eye sockets and worse. I doubt they actually don't "see anything wrong" with it. Having said all that, Danny's posting of that story is awfully fucking different from the one I read...

And Danny, no. It's as delightful (yet even more contrived) than the cg leaf/feather that came more directly before it!

Before the hummingbird appearance I was pleasantly bored and indifferent with the film. I immediately switched to being annoyed by this film was when this little cgi hummingbird appears only a scene or two after one the characters gives a monologue about its significance. We are dealing with a film that is extremely trite and obvious. I still can't believe this is Fincher's film. The man who gave us Zodiac, Seven, and Fight Club. It's as though he has been taking lessons from a director like Chris Columbus or something.

I'm not as well-bred and superior as most the Einstiens on this talkback, so, naturally, I found myself really engaged and transported by this movie. In fact, I will say I found it to be the BEST film I have seen in 2008. Imagine my surprise when, in the middle and at the end of the movie, the threw caution to the wind AND SHOWED A CGI HUMMINGBIRD FOR A COUPLE SECONDS! Damn. Now, I figured it must be CGI cause that damn bird was in a hurricane! And Fincher did not have the resources to train a hummingbird to fly in a hurricane? I suppose now you master thespians are gonna tell me that the hurricane was not real, that Brad Pitt DID NOT AGE BACKWARDS as the movie shows, that the whole thing was MAKE BELIEVE! Thanks for telling me the bird was CGI. I suggest you contact the Acadamy to let them know before this 'horrible' movie wins best picture.

Capone, you were able to sum up EXACTLY why SPEED RACER did not work. There was absolutely NO reason for the story of that film to be so overwrought with melodramatic dialogue and obvious dilemmas milked for as long as possible. That movie should have been twenty-two minutes long, like the TV show. Don't know if it's the worst film of the year, but pretty godawful.

You are precisely right... The only reason I call it the 'CGI hummingbird' is that the bird is as fake and technology-enhanced as the sentiments of the movie. If 'Button' had anything worthwhile to say, it would have done it through the characters, and not that stupid artificial bird. Uberman, if you think that was the best picture of the year, than I feel sorry for you. You obviously haven't seen any decent films in your lifetime. I can't believe I'm hating on a Fincher film-- I haven't seen 'Panic Room', but I've always had respect for the guy's talent, and I thought 'Zodiac' was brilliant, and a savvy corrective to the stupid, exploitative serial-killer films that tried to follow in Se7en's footsteps. But the guy choked big dick on 'Button'. Horrible, derivative, go-nowhere script populated by cardboard characters. A movie that started out mediocre but passably entertaining, and just went downhill from there into cheesy, then excruciatingly dull. I applaud anyone who talked through that piece of shit. Two years from now, no one will remember 'Button'... Except those of use who went in expecting something halfway-watchable and ended up being bored until our eyeballs bled. I'll never anticipate a Fincher movie again. This is the 'Airforce One' of Fincher movies... That is to say-- Harrison Ford still had some respect before he made 'Airforce One'. After that, it all went downhill for him, and now he's a zombie playing second fiddle to Shia LeBeef. Long story short: (dear god, if only the producers of 'Button' had lived by that maxim)-- 'The Curious Case of Benjy Button' SUCKEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

is so overrated, it's decent but tries to hard to change the story into a more serious action drama, while it's villain, the T1000, is about a thousand years more advanced than the arnold version. It's like an F16 compared to a musket. Cameron was only trying to achieve effects with that character but it was too out of place for the story. At least T3 goes back to the B-movie feel of part 1, and the girl robot only has liquid-metal skin, but she's still a robot like arnold underneath. Unfortunately the TV show is following the trend of T2.

Scriptwise, the ways of creating tension need to take into account the history of the characters, what ticks them, etc. It’s the tension that refers to episodes in the characters’ lives that inform all their choices. “Mulder to the rescue, no matter what” will always be partly conditioned by the loss of his sister. Scully will always be a guilt-ridden skeptic, hence it is so hard for her to acknowledge that the vile priest could be a messenger from God, etc. Unless you mean the sexual tension, but even I wouldn’t be so far-fetched as to assume you could use such a stupid, rehashed argument. ;) The blood oozing from his eyes fits the God and faith department perfectly. Would black oil provide more creep-factor, dahling? And how do you mean the priest’s abilities were wasted, when in reality he helped save two people? Which leads us to the penultimate point. Judging by your and other geeks’ comments here and on other boards, it’s only fair to assume you liked the grander scale, f/x, aliens, M & S as Hollywood heroes + the numerous plotholes and a suitable degree of shallowness. I’m sure FTF delivered in all those aspects. Personally, I found FTF obnoxious. There’s no accounting for tastes. And simply calling FTF “significant” doesn’t make it so. ESPECIALLY in the context of the series. I’m sure Carter trusted his audience. Perhaps he trusted it too much. What he got in return for his quiet, meditative, unblockbusterish piece were all those dumb, AICN-friendly “Russian Frankenstein; seriously?” comments. That's what you get for taking risk these days.

I agree that they probably don't think that, which is why I said "it seems" so and then called it a stupid thing to say (instead of dangerous or cold-hearted). I'm sure neither of them would ever bring a gun to the movies and shoot a man accompanying his girlfriend and her three children. But to praise real-life (and not joking) assault with a deadly weapon in a family environment and then mock someone shot for talking during a movie...come on. AICN or not, Talkback or article, that's a stupid thing to do.

'Boring' does not equal 'deep'. If people want to see a really long movie that follows the life of a single person, they should go rent Tarkovsky's 'Andrei Rublev'.

The DARK KNIGHT should be rated higher and THE FALL shouldn't be ranked at all. THE FALL had the potential to be a truly great film, but in the end, it was just stupid. Visually breathtaking, but stupid all the same. The story within the story is what I'm talking about. The story sandwiching the story is another matter. I loved it, even though I had a hard time understanding the lead at times. It's the story within the story that people will want to see this movie for. If folks find this sort of thing passable, I need to dust off my acid trip short stories from the college days. I didn't like THE CELL either, but it was 10 times a better film than this. I think design wise the director is going for some sort of Terry Gilliam vibe. He's no Terry Gilliam. I've never been so bored in watching a film like this. IRON MAN should be rated higher. Also, I thought TROPIC THUNDER was overrated. CABLE GUY in Vietnam is what I like to call it. A Ben Stiller production through and through. If you like MYSTERY MEN you'll like this film. If not, well, you might still like it, but probably not in the best film of the year category as a lot of guys on this site have it. Oh, and THE BANK JOB was highly overrated as well. That said, number 30 on the list, probably isn't a bad place for it. Can't readily off the top of my head think of 30 films better. Oh. And how can you call 21 one of the worst films of the year? The film was not perfect by any stretch, but it was thoroughly entertaining. Better than THE FALL I thought. Spacey was awesome, and you have to love the payoff at the end. Kinda reminded me of 2007's answer to THE BOILER ROOM, another thoroughly entertaining film.

I mean that sincerely. I have a taste for strange movies, and maaaaan was this a strange movie. This movie was bizarre in every way a film can be bizarre. The visuals, the music, the acting, the dialogue, the pacing, the editing. Every element of this film is jarringly weird, and I firmly believe it was intentional. Because the Wachowskis can obviously direct a movie, more importantly they know how to direct a greenscreen movie and coach the performance they want out of the actors, and they were dealing with a proven cast. Visually, it was the most abstract thing I've seen on screen in a long time. And everyone who has ever dabbled in halucinogens immediately recognizes just how accurately parts of this movie capture the sensation of going off an a halucingenic tangent only to be snapped back to reality reflecting 'wow..what....the fuck...was THAT'. The whole film is like one of those dreams you have where you're reluctant to tell anyone about it because you're afraid they'll think there is something deeply wrong with you for having even thought it up.

Most movies are created with the goal of taking you on a narrative journey, providing an experience you can get absorbed in. But some movies are created where the goal is to make you generate the 'experience' by how you react to the film. Todd Solondz films are a great example of this. The entire point of 'Happiness' for example is to make you feel uncomforable and squirm in your seat. And the scenarios it presents are really just there to facilitate that feeling. And when you invite the uninitiated to watch Happiness, you have an evil little grin on the inside because of what you're about to put them through. That's an artistic acheivement, no matter what you personally think of Solondz or his films. I think this film definately falls into this category.
