I usually despise remakes, however loving the original Hellraiser and seeing what horrible straight-to-dvd depths it has sunk to, I would love to see some 'new blood' injected. I'm glad Pascal referenced the 'Hellbound Heart'. Pinhead was never a leader in the original book, hell was reduced to simple mat paintings and the 'Engineer' was never fully realized. I would love to see the 'Hell' dimension (or whatever it is) expanded more along the visual lines of Wayne Barlow's Inferno, H.R.Giger or Beksinski's visual worlds.

I liked the interview - he's got some interesting ideas. I'll have to check out Martyrs. Sadly his Hellraiser remake is going to end up in Weinstein Hell, all cut up (no doubt ripped apart with hooks/chains), and then dumped in about 20 theaters for a week two years after it's completed. Not sure why a Hellraiser remake is needed. It's a thing of its time. The special effects are cool in a low budget, inventive sort of way. I kind of like the squishy, gross, practical effects. In any event, some of it could definitely stand some updating - the blue animated magic lightning stuff, the insect guy could be pruned or changed. The thing that makes Hellraiser really cool though is the tight story - a kind of twisted greek tragedy. The story is pretty much perfect as it is and I'm doubtful that adding his own "unexpected, and surprising things," could really add much (it would likely detract). But what the hell, I like unexpected surprising things. Let's see it.

I think he's dead on about the whole postmodern "we're too cynical" movement in horror movies (and life in general). And it sucks, in effect, because he's right that it takes something almost childlike to fall into a great story. If I had any guesses, I'd say horror just needs to fuck with people more than ever (psychologically) and short out their "smart chip" so an audience can crap their pants and love horror as horror again.

Might want to not reveal too much for a flick that's been getting positive, but mysterious word-of-mouth hmm I liked alot of points both these guys made about horror movies. they complain about their countries being boring and ossified-what about the American Movie Industry? what was the last horror movie made by an American director that even deserves the name "horror"? Fincher's Seven? Coen's No Country? As to having no subcultures-jeez look at America some time-it's really homogeneous-Sitting in A Bed Bath and Beyond inspires feelings of horror-just for the wrong reasons. Wait-no Darabont's the Mist- maybe Cloverfireld, but yeah this corporate production system... Huh...

Widely available to buy in the UK. In fact, if I recall correctly, it was never actually banned, but the bbfc said if they resubmitted it, they would in fact ban it, which ammounts to much the same thing I suppose.

Ooohhhh-this is juicy, actually! Seeing as how these guys might actually read this talkback... Pinhead's gotta go-preferably ripped apart by another more heinuous cenobite overolrd who makes him look like a little B! :-) Point being that he'll have to make an appearance, but after first maybe second, he became like an iconic joke/supervillian thing. Mythos of Barker has to me always been muddled, at best, but he hit on something with the Cenobite Thing. Poster above has the idea-oh yeah if you gotta do CGI-show a big ole Hell as imaging by that pissed off ex-George lucas Skywalker Ranch guy that worked on say star wars Episode one, but got fired for not towing the line. If not directly to head to Jackson's studio and make some actual friggin' Hell model sets WETA or whatever it's called. if you cast a bunch of Dawson's Creek jerkoff castawy American kid actors to go for that precious 18-25 demographic-do not pass go. AVPR I'm talking about you! Ok-but the weinstein's are going to have to insist on some sort of representative from that demnographic if only for name value/recognition, so you might want to start aggresively pursue researching that stuff. Gahh-scriptwise-it's tough bacause you do want to reboot to make something where the torurees are somehow sympathetic. Such that you would identify with their plight, and this one's going to be a doozy for an American audience when looking at it from a producer's standpoint. I.e.-here's a stupid one:-Make a CSI crime team that has to clean up the mess after a cube torture demon incursion, but then the brilliant team leader Grissom has to get all forensically obsessed with solving the secret of this odd piece of evidence. Ohhh that's bloody awful, and i detest C.S.I.-but suddenly i realize I'm only half kidding. The demons-hmmm this is where you have a ton of leeway/creativity. Really-pinhead was the original torture porn figurehead, maybe only pre-dated by freddy Krueger. Why is the pain the demons inflict merely visceral flesh-ripping kind of Pain. Surely that's what low level hack demons employ, like Pin-head employ, but the higherups in Hell's higher ups employ things like emotional, sexual,ummumm umm financial-ahh ok myabe not finacial-ooohh no wait spiritual, religous pain-oohhh me likies maybe. Locations, in America? Candyman beat Lousiana to death, the South in general. not to mention swank's the whatever biblical thingie and oh yeah that Twilight thing, the anne rice thing, gahh. detroit iowa, uhh California-no everybody thinks anything bad that happens there is funny-uhhh Vancouver would be cheaper, but X-files... Adrian Barbeau-totally super Hot-But still a MILF! Tom Whatshisface-a credible law enforcement officer-who when he sees crazy shit going down-is actually going to start firing his weapon. And a kid actor who gets killed, And an actual kindly old Grandmother not acting - who gets utterly hacked up by boat hooks. I mean-who wants to see that?!? It's actually Horrifying!!! :-) Ok-so a foreign director's biggest challenge headed into any kind of American production is seriously going to be casting. Casting in America right now in America is trainwreck wrapped inside an enigma inside of a CF- Not only for the director but for the producers as well- Hmm I guess I just could have said that in the first place-LOL Final point, 90 percent of The Dark knight's success wasn't Nolan's script and seeming ease with big budget CGI production- It was going to the mat with casting. Why does the series need to be rebooted? I can understand the impulse to distance from the Pinhead laden DTV stuff and the cleanest way around that is to reboot, but that didn't impair Hulk / Incredible Hulk. Looking forward to a diverse menagerie of Cenobites. Hopefully none take center stage as Pinhead did. Even though I was always partial to Chatterbox.

I can't speak for the UK, but in Sweden we didn't get any TCM movie at all until 1990, and when we finally did it was part III and nine minutes had been cut from the American R-rated version (or 12 from the unrated, whichever you prefer). It would take another four years for the original to be released (50 seconds shorter than the director intended). The point is still that a lot of European countries had an incredibly low tolerance for horror up into the 90's and that was a huge problem for film fans and it was a freedom problem as well, you know? brodiebruce_405: If what you say is true then the UK probably did have a similar situation to Sweden. I mean... christ. Having to wait until the late 90's to see a movie from 1974? A movie that's a big genre classic? That's insane!

Second, it's funny that the interviewer brings that up, since his last batch of questions show that HE himself (or she herself...) doesn't understand the movie. The interview was good for a laugh.

It's not like he said "I think it's still banned", he said "it's still banned in England" and that's just not true. I hope this guy's movies get banned just so I don't have to come across them in the store or on the TV. Remaking Hellraiser is a bad idea. Also, Hellraiser 4 was not direct to video (it was bad, but I imagine it'll still be better than his remake). I wholly expect his remake of Hellraiser to feature the Cenobites as mindless boogeymen and not the borderline menacing referrees of Hell that the original portrayed. This guy is clearly an idiot and it's going to suck.
