Its possible -- Stan Winston/Practical Magic VS. 3D Weta Gimmick. Hhhhhmmmmmm....

The fans of Cameron being rather excitable about him finally making a new Movie is in evidence cetainly, but it doesn't totally explain all the Hype.

My caution would be that if some people were shown a Demo of the 3D Tech were they REALLY excited about the material or just blown away by the cool new 3D Tech ?

Not that I'm going to dismiss this out of hand yet as there is real promise particularly IF the C.G. is also a Quantum Leap and shows a highly detailed Alien World in amazing detail and fidelity. Likewise IF the Aliens are pretty awesome and a good deal more than glowing humanoid Abyss type Aliens then it's well on it's way to being a Landmark Movie.

The plot COULD also be very good IF it's a bit more complex than an unsubtle "man fucks up planet, nice man leads Alien revolution against bad men."

It's going to be a loooooooong wait till Christmas if the Hype stays this relentless with little to back it up though. I look forward to something, ANYTHING from the actual Movie to guage just how much the Movie or the Tech is pushing expectations.

As for Cameron. I understand your Lucas comparison, but IMO Cameron is a much more talented director than Lucas. But in one year we can discuss this again, when we've seen it and its the new Phantom Menace or it's the new Aliens.

There are just too many imponderables in Avatar for me to jump aboard the eyeball fucking Hype bandwagon yet. But I certainly welcome a new leap into 3D IF it's as effetive and free from previous attempts problems as we are led to believe. (if the 3D just gives people a sore head, eyestrain and little better than the red and blue glasses Cameron is going to look a complete chump.) So I think he's probably tested it to death by now and it must work pretty amazingly.

I wonder if there are any plans afoot for some kind of Home iteration of the Tech ? Cameron could not merely start a huge new Cinematic market and indudtry but a New (and possibly hugely profitable) Home market for the 3D. And that would spell Big Bucks!

It's an entirely new tool to wield and even regardless of Avatar seeing what certain Directors could come up with when let loose in 3 Dimensions is a genuinely exciting prospect.

Course there WILL be some utter shit made along the way but it will be utter shit in amazing 3D!

Watchmen does look mildly entertaining but anything he has previously done is pure butthole.

That Cameron hasn't been sitting at home counting his Titanic loot, or churning out blasphemous retreads of past hits (ie. Lucas), but working on the technology side of the industry is a good thing.

Hopefully he can back it up with a good film. And then Battle Angel.

Hey man I hope you and yours have a good Chritmas.

This won't be like anything we've seen before. If all JC was going to do was film live action with his Pace 3D cameras, then other movies would be comparable that use the Pace cameras.

But JC is using WETA. They did LOTR and Kong. This movie is going to use technology not done before. Just the photo realistic performance capture will be something worth checking out. On top of that is the world that this takes place in. An alien world with some super cool shit. Floating islands, some crazy species that roam the planet. Expect a flight on a creature probably in the same fashion as in the end of the Abyss when Bud hitches a ride. How cool that would of been in 3D.

The Earth scenes and the set up of the story will no doubt be awesome and foreplay to what's to come. Once the space traveling starts and the arrival to the alien planet is where the eyeball fucking will begin.

You'll have an optical hard-on so bad you'll be begging the movie to jerk off your irises so you can shoot jizz out of your pupils.

cameron knows his story structure, he's extremely precised in designing his action set pieces, always strive to achieve something never before seen in films. and moreover, his standard for coolness is second to none.

what makes cameron cool is that he KNOWS what is cool. one bullet shattering t-1000 into million pieces, those same pieces coming back together, arnold standing still from night to day, arnold trying to get his horse off of the top of a highrise hotel and onto a pool way down below, the much imitated bridge versus harrier jets, alien queen versus ripley in loader, t-1000 versus t-800. i can go on.

Terminator is great. T2 is almost great. Abyss is almost great. I'll give him credit there, but I have no faith in Avatar being an amazing movie. It might be amazing from a technological / novelty POV, but Cameron is mainly a kick-ass big-bang action director. And this doesn't sound like much of an action movie.

Yes he comes up with some of the coolest shit. But we know that. You are stating the obvious. We've seen what he can do with a 2D camera and some live props and F/X mixed in. Aliens is a fantastic film that holds up and then some today 23 years later.

What I'm saying is take all that cool shit and NOW add a way of presenting it we haven't seen yet. JC isn't gonna let his story suffer just because of some techy stuff he's using.

I don't need to see anything to know if it's gonna be any good or not. It'll be a awesome cinematic experience. Probably the best ever. But there's no way of knowing how well the story is until you watch all 2 1/2 hours of it. His biggest challenge is that the story holds its own against the dazzling display. He won't even know until the final cut.

Like DannyGloverDB said above about Cameron being a popcorn director, I sort of agree, but he is one of, if not THE best popcorn directors then.

And it just so happens that Sci-Fi action might be some peoples favorite genre of movie, if they like to admit it or not, I love my highbrow foreign movies to but sometimes you can't beat some, Aliens, Terminators, Predators and Robocops action.
