Why would they use a tired sci-fi plot devise to try not to screw with the original. I don't know if anyone who would be upset with doing a remake, reimagination, sequel, or prequels will be happy that the fimmakers are going to what looks to be silly lengths to not screw with the original. Especially since if this prequel is a huge hit, they are going to remake the original anyway as a sequel to this movie.
Why make it retro?

Seriously...perhaps it is to be a prequel....then again...perhaps it's a "prequel" in that if it's not successful they just leave it alone, but if it is successful than can then remake the original as a sequel...I smell new franchise concept here.

I don't know, I've thought for a long time that a prequel using the same production design as the original would be great. And have a meaningful story to tell (the vanguard of humanities hopes and dreams colliding with our basest instincts). Anyway, I once asked Leslie Nielsen how many scripts for FP remakes he'd seen and he said, "around 4,000".
Okay, that's not as bad as it could've been !

There are some films that should never be remade, ever. This is one of them. But if we're talking prequel here - then my recurring nightmare isn't AS bad, and it could well end up being an almost "Aliens"-esque seige movie. I can live with that, because I don't have to live with notions of a re-imagined cruiser C57D or Robby.

Make a movie built around a similar theme as the backstory of Forbidden Planet--THAT I could get. But I thought the backstory was there to enhance the atmosphere and suspense of the original movie--not to enable a franchise. And I'm not convinced it lends itself over to that without be so reworked that it might as well be billed as something NEW. At what point will they get hungry for new properties in Hollywood? Did imagination skip a generation of writers, or did vision skip a generation of producers?

Lets expand it even further. Have a film that is just the journey of the second ship before it reaches Altair 4. What a waste of time. The first film has mystery letting your imagination fill in the gaps. Now we have to have all our gaps and holes filled by these Hollywood porn directors who do not have enough imagination to write a new story or their own. A waste of money. I am sure the mysterious Krell will be making a nice big CGI appearance.

with the Macho/testerone blockbuster movies when arnie and sly and bruce were king. That was when regan was in the oval office. Mctiernan was the second best action director working in Hollywood in the 1990s. Talkbakers hate the director whos name ryhmes with Pay. I hope for camerons sake that Avatar rips apart the box office and is a mega ton smash. I am not sure as I havent seen any footage yet. Cameron should leave the forbidden planet alone. Here is an idea. I think Cameron should set up a new studio. His goal should be to make it a home for original filmmakers. He should first of all set up some sort bursary prize for short story writers. then commission new filmmakers to make these stories and so on. He should get all the best people in the industry to teach these film students things like editing, sound, producion and design. But he should showed them old ways of doing things like his mentors Roger Corman and the late great Stan Winston. First of all though. I think somebody somewhere should honour the memory of Forrest J ackerman. and Oliver Postgate.

The original big budget sci-fi movie of all time -Forbidden Planet-Was based on "The Tempest", and that was the theme. Robby was the sprite, the Doctor was the Prospero. http://absoluteshakespeare.com /guides/tempest/characters/cha racters.htm The Tempest Characters Study Guides Hamlet Julius Caesar King Henry IV King Lear Macbeth Merchant of Venice Othello Romeo and Juliet The Tempest Twelfth Night Trivia Authorship Bard Facts Bibliography Biography FAQ Films Globe Theatre Pictures Quiz Timeline Visitor Survey Click here! The Tempest Characters guide studies each character's role and motivation in this play. Prospero: The main character of this play, Prospero used to be the legitimate Duke of Milan. Unfortunately his treacherous brother Antonio stole his title and banished Prospero to a Mediterranean island with his daughter Miranda. A great lover of the arts and in particular books, Prospero has harnessed the powers of magic whilst in exile. Miranda: Prospero's daughter. Attractive and young at the tender age of fifteen years, Miranda has lived with her father in exile for twelve years. Aside from her father, she has seen few men in her life, and quickly enchants the shipwrecked Ferdinand. Ariel: An airy spirit, Ariel serves his master Prospero well in his many tasks of magic on Prospero's island. Once enslaved by a witch, Ariel wants his freedom now from Prospero. At the conclusion of this play Ariel is made free. While I have great respect for both Straczynski, and Cameron, this idea or concept is just fucking stupid.

The original Star Trek was about 80% FP rip-off, right down to the sound effects, uniforms and set design. This is an opportunity to re-boot into a 'Star Trek' like Universe that is familiar, but really a blank slate. The spin-offs and sequel and book and comic book and model and action-figure potential here is endless.

It sounds like it could be a good idea if done right. I like the prequel idea, especially if they can be truly imaginative when it comes to the Krell. The original, excellently made "Forbidden Planet" was a fairly accurate and quite brilliant in many ways, adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". that he obviously hates the way the net is used by hollywood to ruin how movies or sold to the public. Studios will put half the film into trailers. they will create websites and Put up BTS bits do superbowl ads, net ads. Cameron doesnt play that game. He makes movies his way. He will take all the time in the world to push things. However, Australia looks like being one of the biggest fox bombs of the year. Critics are saying its a snoresfest. So privately, even though he bagged fox 11 oscars. There must be some concerns about Avatar. It is being released in 2009. so why hasnt the campaign started already. where are the posters and the trailers and so forth.

Nice going, Aces, openly revealing the end of the third movie and thus spoiling what the whole trilogy would be building up to. And I don't mean that Morbius sacrifices himself and dies and destroys the planet and all the Krell technology (Walter Pigeon does that in the original), but that the "new" and "improved" story hook/plot twist this time around by JMS will be that Altera (played by Anne Francis in the original) will gain sentient powers from being born on the planet and go power crazy (which frankly sounds like a shitty idea), so that she'll die now too. As you spoiled and said, Morbius will sacrafice her too to stop her from being unleashed on the galaxy.

Well, if that's the idea they're going for and IF the whole point of this trilogy is to go from the events of the original expedition and by the third movie THEN become an a remake (or a reimagining) of FORBIDDEN PLANET as we know it... and since Altera is going to go all alien and evil and power crazy and ultimately die (and thus we don't get the happy ending of FORBIDDEN PLANET where Captain Adams (Leslie Neilsen) and Altera end up together) -- I mean, since this trilogy will apparently have dark endings all around, why not have some sort of framing sequence where Captain Adams, years later, is finally revealing the story of what happened at which point you could have old Leslie Neilsen laying and dying in bed or something? And we get to see HIM being the one telling us what happened?

But frankly, the whole "Alera" goes Dark Phoenix and bad story angle sounds like utter SHIT. Someone above said it best. STAR TREK did this story in "Where no man has gone before" and managed to cover it in freakin' 45 minutes and didn't need 3 fucking movies to do it.

Much "what is this earth love" type shenanigans going on. (Kirk had to deal with this every other planet)

Though she did lose some of it with her lust for Nielson (who then had to hilariously Zapp her Tiger) and that fed into the Altaira cannot stay theme too.

You have to wonder exactly how much of the originals Krell mythos would be kept anyway as they were rather wide and oddly shaped creatures who we know were a super advanced society that goes bugshit with their Id's killing everybody in a night. (an off switch would have been handy at that point)

I suspect there is some OTHER science fiction Movie idea at play here (maybe even two) that the Producers or writers have folded into the Forbidden Planet mythology perhaps. Otherwise it does all seem rather pointless and stretched very thin over three Movies.

RETIREE DIES AFTER RETIREMENT PARTY HIJINKS
by BringingSexyBack
Dec 21st, 2008
05:11:23 PM
TOKYO (Reuters) – A 60-year-old man who was thrown into the air in celebration at his retirement party died after his colleagues failed to catch him and he fell to the floor, a Japanese newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The case came to light after the man's wife filed a police complaint against colleagues who threw the man up into the air, accusing them of gross negligence, the Mainichi paper reported on its website.

The man died in September, 10 months after the party attended by around 40 people at an unnamed transport company at an inn in Ritto, near the ancient capital of Kyoto in central Japan.

The fall damaged his neck and backbone, leaving him paralyzed, and he eventually died of blood poisoning, the paper said.

"He worked until the retirement age. We had been looking forward to going to various places as a couple and were excited that we would be able to spend a relaxing time together," the paper quoted the man's wife as saying.

"No matter what I say he won't come back, but I want to find out why this happened."

I was hoping for a remake updating the effects and look, but keeping the actual story. But, if anyone can pull this off, it's Cameron. He IS the guy that made me like a chick flick after all. The premise sounds interesting enough. Not sure if it'll hold as a trilogy though. And whatever they do, I doubt they'll capture the feel that the original gives when watching it. Definitely one of the classics.

A Theremin is a musical instrument.
by emeraldboy
Dec 22nd, 2008

Which is played without physical contact. it was created in 1919 in Russia by Lev Sergeivich Termen (known in the West as Léon Theremin). The theremin is unique among musical instruments in that it is played without physical contact. The musician (occasionally referred to as a thereminist) stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennas. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). Most frequently, the right hand controls the pitch and the left controls the volume, although some performers reverse this arrangement. Some low cost theremins use a conventional, knob operated volume control and have only the pitch antenna.

Funny thing; I remember Harlan Ellison once mentioning Forbidden Planet in a talk he was giving about writing, and one of the things he mentioned was "Who were the Krell? What did they look like?" While I believe the idea of a prequel is good, I hope they don't re-write the Krell to be a diabolical race who created their "Machine" to conquer the universe; the best thing about the original was that all the horror was unintended (it was a just a device of convenience that accidentally unleashed the "Monsters of the Id"). Also, hurry up! I too want to see Leslie Neilson have some role in the remake (preferrably ad Dr. Morbius [which would be his first serious role again in years ^_^]), but how old is he and how is his health?

Albeit, it came out in the early sixties, but...Diana was Morbius's wife, and a linguist. By his own admission she was the brighter and more noble of the two. It was she who deciphered the Krell script; Morbius is a plodder, not a natural genius. Even the movie makes that clear. Diana was the first to take the brain boost, and I believe she was pregnant at the time. Altaira is 19 when the United Planets forces land. So conceivably, the Krell treatment can alter one at the cellular level. Even with today's neuroscience, the same problem would occur: God-like power to a creature with an 'ape's brain' is a sure disaster. I like that idea that Morbius' wife bites the Krell apple first, and then he is lumbering on behind her. It makes his protectiveness, and his powerlessness over Altaira more likely.
