3-D is to 2010s what CGI was to 1990s
by Mr Gorilla

Remember the first 10 years after Jurassic Park? Suddenly everything was CGI. Bad CGI. John Carpenter made a sequel 'Escape From' movie- with bad CGI. Jan de Bont decided to remake 'The Haunting' - with bad CGI. You started to feel that scriptwriters were being made to write stuff that incorporated CGI - even if it had no relevance to the story. Going to the movies started being like eating too much candy. Too much bad CGI was making films synthetic and sickly. Finally, with movies like Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight, there's a swing back. The important thing being that what matters is the script, the story, the characters, the action, the drama. I'm not opposed to Hollywood embracing developments. I think that James Cameron used good CGI, and will probably use good 3-D. Ditto Robert Zemeckis. But please let's not all jump on this bandwagon. Tr2n being in 3-D is actually the LEAST exciting thing I've read about it.

...is amazing. Is it "Tratoon" or "Trtoon"? Or maybe "Tree Toon"? "T. R. Toon"? But if so, then why not "T. R. 2 O. O. N.", as it should be pronounced if it's an acronym?

Really, the twat's insistence on still using it must be due to stubborness at this point. "I don't care that 2 looks more like R and nothing like O! I'm using TR2N! TR2N is my idea, mine, mine, mine! It's great! Go out of my sandbox, waaah!"

Tron is a good vehicle for 3D. The film will likely end up being largely synthesized, anyway. While I agree the use of 3D is mostly cynical and marketing-driven on the part of the studios, a few filmmakers are experimenting with 3D as a new narrative technique. I'm very keen to see Coraline and Avatar as examples of the potential of the technique.

I think it was in the initial press stuff. Anyway, Chud mentioned it in early October . . . http://tinyurl.com/64hwr9 Slashfilm had it about the same time. Do a search on The Google for TR2N 3D and you can see that it's been out there for a while. I'm sure there will be a 2D release as well. Just as there has been with Bolt, and will be with UP. 3D Only Releases are generally reserved for retrofitted 3D products, like Nightmare Before Christmas, and the release of Toy Story and Toy Story II in 3D will also probably be 3D Exclusive releases. But I expect Toy Story 3 will play in 2 and 3-d, like Bolt, and like Meet the Robinsons, and Chicken Little, and probably TR2N.

When other filmmakers are calling Avatar "the game-changer" it's clear something cool is on the cards. I'm just expecting a well made sci-fi adventure movie, something I haven't seen in years. Cameron knows how to shoot action and the prospect of seeing him deliver a new sci-fi film is pretty exciting to be honest. I was a big Cameron fan from Terminator through True Lies and can't wait to see if he's still got it. Everyone else can look forward to McG's Terminator all they want, i'm sticking with Iron Jim.

It's just a stupid gimmick that physically hurts the viewer.

I don't know of a single movie that was improved by 3D, and when you look at 3D movies in 2D they just look goofy as shit. Beowulf is a good example of this, some shots are purely designed for 3D, but in 2D they just look awkward and make no sense.

The story idea I've heard for this sounds boring tho. I really liked the idea of Flynn turning into a badguy but if this is all hipped up like "Hackers" it's gonna suck. TRON should be more epic and less flashy (altho Jolie boob shots are always welcome).

TRON 2.0 game
by cyberskunk
Dec 17th, 2008
12:49:35 PM
I played the TRON 2.0 game. I got it at the recommendation of someone who liked the visuals so much. I guess I'd say... I liked the visuals; they were fun. I did not so much like parts of the first person shooter experience due in part to the jumping involved. You can go online and compete against people in 3rd person perspective, but I didn't do that much. Also, I used cheats a lot in the FPS game. I remember some powerful opponents might insult the player, and I destroyed it in mid-insult: "I've met compound interest programs that could fight better than -- YARRGH!" or some such.

My favorite game for disc combat alone is still the Intellivision game of TRON : Deadly Discs. I think that's what it was called. I thought it was the best representation of disc combat. You could send discs out after characters and recall them again with another button press. You could use your disc as a shield, which made it possible to break opponent discs. I don't recall the circumstances that worked in.

laserpants and the rest of the unfaithfuls.. if you're not excited(salivating at the mouth kind of excited) at the prospect of big jim returning to big budget sci-fi, implementing all the best tech modern cinema can offer, then you have no business calling yourself a movie buff. and i really have to wonder why you even bother hanging out at a movie site.

listen, i have watched some of the best movies the world could offer - movies by kurosawa, fellini, truffaut, hitchcock, spielberg, so movies is in my blood. and there's no other movie i'm more excited to see now than cameron's avatar. no need to see the poster/trailer, dont even what to find out more about it. those things more often distract than help. i rather go in clueless and let all images be revealed to me on the big screen for the first time, and in context. if you could have faith in one filmmaker, have faith in jim.

I had chili for lunch. End of line.

an artist like frank miller try his hand at film, and you guys dont even give him a chance, and just dismiss his film outright based on the dimwitted reviews. cameron is making a movie after 12 years hiatus? yeah, it will suck! tarantino's glorious basterds? fuck the cast! it lacks the star power and charisma of dolph lundgren!

meanwhile thank you for keeping ratner, bay, mcg, and even paul anderson in business. you guys bitch about those hacks all the time and yet you still give them your money, all the time. so... fuck you. yeah. F-U-C-K Y-O-U.

As there seems to be a mini-Avatar discussion in this TR2N/Tron 2/Whatever the fuck it's called TB, thought I'd pitch in with a question:

Has anyone seen the early examples of concept art that I believe were posted on latinoreview.com?

Unfor tunately I don't have a link as I found them late one night, plus there is NO GUARANTEE that they are actually genuine, but if they ARE genuine I feel a little disappointed.

The concept art I saw was for the Naa'vi or whatever they're called. While they had plenty of cool detail and accessories, the creature itself looked VERY human, from the facial features and general body structure right down to a human, five-toed foot. Sure, they had blue skin and were very skinny, but somehow I was expecting something a little more ALIEN, perhaps a touch of feline about it.

Maybe this stuff has already been discredited as fake (if anyone knows please let me know). Even if it is genuine, a pencil sketch is nothing compared to a fully rendered CG creature. Also, nothing can stop me from getting excited about a new James Cameron movie, as he has been gone for FAR too long and it's nice to have him back doing what he does best. However, I can't shake this nagging doubt I have.

Hopefully we don't have to wait TOO long for some actual footage (teaser early 2009 maybe? Possibly even attached to Watchmen?), so here's hoping that eliminates my doubts...

I went to Drudge for some reason justa minute ago and there was a link that said Eddie Murphy set to play Riddler. The link went to the London Sun of all places and also tipped that Shia Lebouf would play Robin and Rachel Weizs was Catwoman. On top of that there is a cliffhanger ending. This is an amazing story for a movie that hasn't even signed on its writer or director yet. Do they have a crystal ball in their office? What do you suppose their sources are? A starbucks cashier who overheard a WB intern who was talking about his fanscript?

Just because someone doesn't think James Cameron's next film will be the second coming hardly disqualifies them from being a film buff. Personally, I'm interested to the project, and tentatively looking forward to it, but I care fairly little for his career, and fail to see how Aliens, Abyss and the Terminator's makes him a sci fi god. Alfonso Cuaron has only directed one science fiction movie, which made far less than any one of Cameron's films, but I'd place it higher on my list of all time greatest science fiction movies than Cameron's entire body of work in the genre.

Avatar fanboys can't jump into every goddamn talkback insisting everyone ignore the subject at hand to focus on a movie they've already projected a masterpiece and not expect the rest of us to become at least a little annoyed at it all.

you can't blame the entire movie geeks community for being excited for a new cameron's film. if our excitement annoys you, then the problem is with you, not us. i'm more annoyed of the people who's already on attack mode of the film, just becuase they think it's 'cool' to be contrary(i'm not talking about you specifically).

and what cuaron's sci-fi? you mean children of men? how is that even a sci-fi? because it takes place in a near future that look exactly like today's world? i love the film, but why compare it to cameron's films? both directors go for different kind of films.

Children of Men

It takes place in a dystopian future and, like all good science fiction, tackles current social problems with metaphors. No hard and fast criteria exists to define science fiction, but the broad consensus since it came out is that Children of Men is a sci fi film.

Some movie geeks don't like Cameron, I'm one of them. It doesn't make me any less of a geek. As a correlating example, I love Quentin Tarantino's movies, and can't wait for Inglorious Bastards. Many geeks on this site hate him, and bombard every talkback relating with snarky negativity. I've learned to live with this, and only really get into it when they use lame criticisms like "he's self-indulgent".

Again, I'm interested in Avatar, I just tire of seeing "fucking your eyeballs" roboposts in every talkback.

distopia sci-fi

children lacks anything remotely futuristic. everything looks 'normal'. i've seen my share of distopia sci-fi, and the (slightly)futuristic element(gadgets/appliances, way of life, etc.) is always there.

but even if you want to categorize it as a sci-fi, cameron is going for a different kind of sci-fi - the big spectacle action oriented kind of sci-fi. so why compare the two? both movies were going for different aesthetic.

i said if you're not excited for big jim's big return, then you are not a movie buff. and it was meant for those nutcases who outright dismiss movie's potential, thinking it will bomb. you know, the always negative, always love to be contrarian bunch. you say you're interested in the movie, so i have no quarel with you. :)

is a brilliant fiction film, but it's not science fiction. A film set in the future does not automatically categorise it as sci-fi.

I am looking forward to Avatar as much as anyone, but Motoko posting the "fucking your eyeballs" comment on every single talkback is very fucking irritating.

That and Innerspace! Tron is finally getting a sequel, so 1 out of 3 ain't bad. Plus Gemlins had a sequel (and a great, if tongue-in-cheek one at that). I still think Last Starfighter could make a series. Alex's little brother, now a teenager, is called up to be the new last starfighter when Alex mysteriously goes missing and the evil Xur has returned to threaten Rylos. Hah, BSG fans don't look so pathetic now, eh? They made a series out of Stargate and that had a lot less potential.
