Since the economy is tanking, it's just cheaper and reliable to remake stuff that will sell instead of taking a 40 million dollar chance. Even remaking crappy obscure movies is a gamble to these executives. I can't wait until they remake Star Wars Episode 2 and 3. I thought Phantom Menace was pretty good, so there.

Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. You can't recast an iconic character like that and it still be good.

With Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, it's easier to have different actors play them, because they're masked.

F13 vs Nightmare
by enderandrew
Dec 12th, 2008
09:26:10 AM
F13 was pretty crappy from the get go and only got worse. Halloween was good and the franchise went to shit. New Nightmare wasn't bad, and the series wasn't all that bad. The only problem is that the audience saw Freddy as the protagonist as opposed to a scary figure. I think a sequel could have worked here. I'm curious how they make Freddy "scary" again.

Adrien Brody for Freddy. Of course, this movie is totally going to go the route of "JUMP SCARE, JUMP SCARE, GORE GORE GORE, JUMP SCARE WITH GORE, BE AFRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAID!!! BOOGEDY-BOOGEDY!!!" Which blows chunks. They have never really explored Freddy's child-molesting background other than to say "Hey, he diddled kids, the parents killed him, now he's living in your dreams and killing teens." My dream version of this story is to see them actually show Freddy ALIVE, post-molestation charges and getting away with it. Then his death at the hands of the angry mob. Then take it into the present.

I've got even more ideas on how this could work well, but whatever. Bottom line is that I think Brody could bring a real element of horror to the character. Does he really need to be a wise-cracking ghoul? Can't he just be a ghoul? Oh well, I guess exploring the inner-workings of a demonic child-rapist/killer would be a little too heavy for this. Fuckers.

They work well together, but Burton is not a crutch that Depp must have. Yes, Depp has moved light years beyond, but that's the point. It's because of that he would make a great Krueger. Plus, from a marketing standpoint it's about the only way you'll get fans of the original to watch this. That, and a cameo by Robert Englund.

Does the Research Back This?
by DeeJay
Dec 12th, 2008
12:06:39 PM
This sequel's overwhelming response in the genre community looks bad, to say the least. In fact, it looks unusually negative. I have to wonder if the involved studios have done the requisite research here. First, I've got the impression that almost ever horror fan between 15 and 24 years of age has already seen a number of these movies... so I'm not sure how large of a potential audience they may be dealing with. In fact, "Freddy vs. Jason" may have shown that forwarding the mythology allows a project to tap into multiple audiences... but what do I know? If they're going with a new killer, I just think it would be better to take a character(s) from one of the prior movies and make him/her the new killer, with Englund's Freddy making a cameo here and there. Whatever the case, I think there's been enough post-1987 research on dreams--- in Psychology, Neuroscience, etc.--- to allow the producers to build off of what they already have in place... and create a downright interesting piece of art.

D. Vader... you've got a point. If Freddy doesn't crack jokes, how could he *really* be Freddy? That's like an ultra-stoic Spiderman, a Wolverine who faints at the sight of blood, or a Dr. Doom who doesn't like to read. Sick Fixx... while I don't entirely agree with your premise, I think "when this film is released" might be the point in time that certain studio execs may realize that, sometimes "the past is fine just the way it happened."

it cant hold a candle to the terrible-ness of Freddy's Dead. the series has never had awesome acting or anything but its always been acceptable, but Freddy's Dead is just terrible in every way possible. even Freddy himself is bad, terrible makeup, ugly glove and i dont know what happened to the sound guy or whatever but his voice sounded so bad. i know its often fluctuated through the series but Parts 4 and 5 had finally found a perfect sound. The fact that New Nightmare and FVJ sounded good too just shows it was due to half-assed work. until Freddy's Dead, Part 2 was the worst but least i can still sit through it, i cant say the same for Freddy's Dead....and my pointless rant is done.

i'm pretty sure Platnum Dunes are hoping this is a hit and becomes a new series, so in that way of thinking, recasting makes perfect sense. despite the stories/rumors of older actors i'm 99% sure whoever fills the boots will be mid 30s tops, if even that old...that way he can keep making more. Englund isnt too old as FVJ showed but he obviously has no say and has pointed out recently that he feels he's getting too old with regards to the makeup process and all. Although it would have been so cool to have an actor not only play in a remake of his own movie, but play the same role. oh well..c'est la vie.

I normally don't care that Hollywood remakes a movie, but I think this is going to far. Not only are they remaking the (arguably) schlocky Horror movies, but also the undoubtedly artistic and classic ones as well. Remakes of the Scanners, Birds and Rosemary's Baby are in the works so what is next? Alien, Exorcist, Jaws, a non-shot-by-shot remake of Psycho by Rob Zombie?

It was misreported that BBT had been cast. Apparently Robert Englund said he'd love to see BBT cast as Freddy, and people instead read it as "BBT has been cast as Freddy." Killer idea, though. Johnny Depp would be good too, and quite appropriate.

Who plays Nancy? Do you go with an unknown or a fairly-well known. Not that it would surprise anyone since it's a remake, but I'd love to see them go with the Hitchcock approach and have a well-known as Tina and an unknown as Nancy.

To answer your question; because, now, such a movie *can* be different. The character of Dracula, et al. didn't have DVDs of his original installment/ cable broadcasts/ actors appearing at annual fan conventions at the time the character was recast. Granted, I'm with you in the sense that New Line execs can do whatever they choose. That's their perogative. I just don't see why they'd turn their proverbial backs on an opportunity to give some of today's writers a little more to play with while simultaneously giving a boost to the sale (and potential re-release) of their existing "Nightmare" DVDs. The execs may have already crunched the numbers and seen where the concerns of so many fans are moot, of course... so I suppose we'll need to wait and see.

This is posted on YouTube... it looks really cool. The guy who plays Freddy in this does a great job. It says he has an agent getting him an audition. Check it out. There may be hope for a remake if it looks and feels like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =jxPmOP1_HIY
