No mention of scientology. I don't think you can talk about this movie without mentioning Tom's beliefs and how the Germans were hesitant to let the movie be filmed in Berlin because tom is a Scientologist. Why didn't Quint ask Brian how they were eventually able to get the Germans to allow filming? What concessions did they make? Why did the krauts change their minds? Inquiring minds want to know.

Superman Returns

He got quite a bit right in that film. Luthor was great. Routh really captured all the iconic poses and just nailed the look. The first half moves at a decent pace and the shuttle/plane sequence is great. But it falls apart towards the end. It drags and the fact that Superman was nearly killed by being near the Kryptonite, and then moments later he is lifting a KRYPTONITE CONTINENT just don't make any sense. Please, please, please have a five year old review your plot for gaping holes like that. That being said, I think Singer is a great director. Returns was his worst film, and I still largely enjoyed that. I'm curious to see if he has grown and learned more about action sequences. They aren't his strong suit. And about Tom Cruise, EVERYONE who has met him says the exact same thing. Heck, Kevin Smith, who gossips and throws people under the bus constantly said Cruise was the nicest, most sincere, down-to-earth guy you'll ever meet. Maybe is very sincere, and at the same time, believes in an insanely stupid religion.

Bryan Singer is vastly overrated, usual suspects is a good flick, but the x films were mediocre and superman was just lame. I am really going to enjoy watching two overrated hacks (cruise and singer) get what they have coming when this thing bombs.

by ufoclub1977
Dec 11th, 2008

"Valkyrie" was odd in that all the "Germans" had English accents except for Stauffenberg who had an American accent... but it was pretty good, tense, and kept you engaged for the duration... much better than his superhero ventures (in my opinion)... back to form like "Apt Pupil".

It's pretty mediocre, unfortunately. What can you say about a film that has the right ingredients, but just doesn't work? I thought it was basically a misfire, an average film, rather than a great one. Pretty much the same feeling I had with The Last Samurai, I think.

BECAUSE YOUR FUCKIN' FIRED!! Singer deserves credit for "The Usual Suspects" and ushering in the modern era of super-hero films with his great "X-Men" films. But he screwed up big time in "Superman Returns" and the franchise cannot risk another kick at the can by him. Otherwise the franchise will be dead for several years. Sorry Mr. Singer but you screwed up. It's time for a new start with a new cast, vision and writer with love for the source material. In other words, another Christopher Nolan type.

I love SUPERMAN RETURNS for what it is (the long lost SUPERMAN III that Donner never made), but obviously it's embarrassing to Singer because he tried hard with RETURNS but it didn't really become a blockbuster. The studio respects him enough not to completely rule him out in their press talk concerning the next flick. But he will not be back.

So I have been thinking a lot about that movie since it came out and I figured the whole thing out, mostly becaue I'm a genius. Nolan says that he won't make another Batman film until he finds a good story. Right? How about he makes a Batman movie? Not Batman Begins or the Dark Knight but just Batman. Not everything was tied up at the end of the last movie. The peolpe of Gotham hate him now and they need him back to set things straight. We need hin back. I need him. Maybe they could call it The Dawn Of Batman. Hells yes son!! Sorry. I love that movie. All geeks need to Call to arms and demand it.

08:28:38 PM
That's the ONLY thing I don't want lost in a reboot. Otherwise, they need to lose Alex Lane. And Kate Bosworth. And seriously consider John Hamm for Superman. Also great as Spacey is, Terry O'Quinn for Lex Luthor and as a rich evil business man rather than an amusingly scheming crook. I was okay with the rest of the movie...but make James Marsden's character be Hal Jordan instead and spin it off to Green Lantern. Also feature Brainiac and Metallo and villains who can give us a superfight but not just be Superman 2 again (though Terrance Stamp back as Zod would still be kind of fun). Oh yeah, and pace it better. And include more of the characters from Superman's world of Metropolis--look how good it was including so many of Batman's supporting cast. By the way, that was a puny as shit blurb on Superman, not worth mentioning at all in the headline.

Tom Cruise will be playing General Zod in the next Superman, in the first part of the movie dealing with Krypton's past & it's dealings with Brainiac. Leading to whatever it was that caused Gen. Zod to go renegade & maybe conspire with Brainaic to capture a city & shrink it for whatever purpose Brainaic had in mind...perhaps manipulating Gen. Zod that he was trying to help preserve a piece of Krypton......

"Brandon Routh is the Superman for this generation. He gave a graceful, soulful performance in 'Superman Returns.' We should respect that." Fuck you. I don't have to "respect that" -- Routh was mediocre in the one chance he had at great stardom. He'll be toiling in $5mil indie movies for the rest of his career. I could write a book about all the problems of Superdud Returns -- and that's just the finished product. The way the production handled itself was beyond "egotastic." Whatever -- the movie blew, it didn't create a franchise (don't you think Warners would be well into production by now if they planned on continuing this at all?) and it seriously damaged any goodwill that Singer had in this industry, and Valkyrie has probably destroyed the rest. Respect of an audience's intelligence and ability to accept new interpretations is all I care about -- and this "movie" shit on it by force-feeding us a 20 year-old mythology with hackneyed characters and a bitchy, awful Lois Lane. Respect Routh? I'd respect him more if he refused that script.

The only thing lamer than Bryan Singer's movies is Bryan Singer talking about movies. I think I lost consciousness just after he compared himself to Kubrick. Fortunately, I had already skipped ahead to read his embarrassingly convoluted non-answer to the only question I cared about. He should probably prepare a more polished statement since he will probably be asked some form of that question for the next however many years it takes to get Superman back on the big screen. (At least a decade, I predict.)

Dec 11th, 2008
10:53:32 PM
Not only did Singer choose Superman over the X-Men franchise he built, his version of Superman betrayed core conceits of the character. On a conceptual level, the movie was wrong. Superman would never, NEVER leave Earth. In doing so, his upbringing by the Kents was nullified. Meaningless. Abandon the woman he loves? Sounds like Superman to me. It's funny: 'Returns' portrayed him as so alienated, when in the comics, Superman's most important power is his empathy and his connection to humanity, which Singer stripped him of. Keanu emoted more as Neo in the Matrix films, no offense to Routh. Singer changed so much of Superman's visual iconography, the strange 3-D 'S', the 'S'-less cape, the 'S'-belt. It felt like an impostor overcompensating with his appearance while disregarding its template at the same time. To this day, my favorite part of the movie is the first five minutes. Because after that John Williams score, it wasn't Superman any more. It was Keyser Soze vs. Bizarro (weird Soap-Opera-Boy Bizzaro). I hope VALKYRIE kicks my ass unrelentingly, because after the letdown of "Returns" (and as far as battling Nazis go, Indy IV), I could use some dead Nazis.

That too, but the filming location Bendlerblock is an important memorial place and some politicans just tried to protect it from being overrun by hollywoods careless mob. check wikipedia.org/wiki/Bendlerbloc k The Ministry tends to restrict access to the Bendlerblock due to its historical significance and lingering sensitivities about Germany's role in World War II. Filming permission was granted to a movie studio in 2003, but the Ministry of Defence was displeased with the result. The Ministry hesitated to grant permission for scenes of the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie, about the July 20 Plot, to be filmed there. However, the permission was eventually granted, and filming for the movie (entirely photographed in and around Berlin) was allowed. Cruise led the film crew in a minute of silence before filming began in honour of those who were executed on the site in 1944."

The great thing about that film is the way all the story threads climax together when they are all running around at the end. That film doesn't even have much action in it. So maybe him not doing another superman film is a good thing? It could go either way. On the other hand I really don't want another Superman origin story.

Routh was great. But look...Superman should know by now Luthor is going to have some kryptonite somewhere...so put a couple of cops with GUNS on your back when you go to confront him. Problem solved. The movie was directed beautifully...but ummmm the fact that Superman had a kid was perhaps THE MOST RETARDED THING EVER. Not only that...but the fact that he was so damn emo. I get what they tried to do...but who wants to see Superman like that? It's really NOT THAT HARD to make a Superman movie with heart. Just put the humans around him in peril do up some amazing effects (besides Superman lifting shit..we get it...he can lift stuff) and go and do the damn thing will you?

He was a male model doing a charmless Chris Reeve impersonation - nothing more. He was a blank, a great big zero. The only part of his performance that I semi-believed was when he was crying while getting his ass handed to him by Kevin Spacey and Kumar - and that was just wish fulfillment on my part. Singer has no idea what he's doing with Superman. They need to shit-can that guy and let somebody who's read a Superman comic at least once take a crack at it.

Even if you loved the movie, you have to agree with the following mistakes. The writers/director really dropped the ball when:

They cast Kate Bosworth as Lois. In the script, Lois has been a reporter for at least 6 years, not a freshman-year college student.

...Superman grabs the wing of a spinning airliner to prevent it from spinning. That was dumb. Why would he do that? Was he trying to rip the wing off? Supes should be smarter.

They already killed Superman -- where were you in 1992? In fact, Tim "I'm Helena's bitch" Burton nearly adapted that story for a WB production in the late 1990s. I wonder if it would have been worse than Singer's movie. That should be a rhetorical question, but it's not. Well, that's ok, because Singer's movie might have effectively "killed" Superman on its own, for a long while... What do you want DC to do -- "shoot" Superman like they did Cap? A fat lot of good "Death" does to stop a comic book character -- see you in 2010 for Captain America on the big screen. Superman is wildly interesting in so many ways; other people have explained it all much better than I. He just needs the right STORY. Why is it so hard to modernize this character? Well, *someone's* doing it -- on television -- despite it receiving just as much split-vote attention as the recent "movie", the show -whether you love it or hate it- has lasted 8 years(!) on a mediocre network, sells millions in DVDs worldwide, and has an international fanbase that rivals and exceeds many current "troubled" shows such as Heroes. Seems to me like a perfect synergistic franchise material, but what do I know? I think that ship passed a while ago... They need a clean start, no Donner, no CW-influenced style, no glasses-wearing when you're still a teenager in Smallville, no Williams, and most of all, no NOSTALGIA, and no ICE CRYSTALS. START OVER, as you should have done in 2004.

But I liked Superman Returns in SPITE of its flaws (which I fully acknowledge, and most of which have been brought up here). Hey, we disagree. Sue me. But I think the "wrath of khan" approach is heartening if you look at SR as TREK I--boring, slow and stilted despite its virtues--and then Khan comes along and knocks it out of the park. I have enough faith in Singer, and--sorry again!--one of the things I LIKED about SR is that it existed within the Donner mythology. Because Donners film(s), whatever its/their flaws, got FAR more right than wrong, and I just can't see anyone improving on it. Sorry, Smallville fans. (Great on TV but it just wouldn't work for me as a movie, anymore than Lois & Clark would...) But...we'll see. The fact that Singer can even give THIS kind of a response when we'd all been led to believe he was off the project and WB was going for a total reboot gives me hope that he'll get another chance. I believe in you, Bryan! (And Brandon!)

Are "white bread" characters to those who don't really follow the characters and/or are hack writers. Angst ridden anti heroes like Wolverine are easy to write. It takes skill to write for a character who on the surface, is a clean cut squeky clean type of persona. You have to dig deep to find the complexities. And they do have complexities, the lot of them. On another note, if anyone believes Steve Rogers was killed with no plans of him ever returning, i have a bridge to sale them.

Or I'll put my god damn foot up his ass!! But he might want that to happen?! But seriously fuck this guy and that peice of shit he made. I got banned from talkback for speaking my mind about the abomination that was SR. That was the absolute height of arogance as a film maker to basically ignore the source material (i.e. the comics) and make up his own horrendous story line, with supes "son". Just a horrific polt black hole. I think a total reboot is necessary. Not a Dark Supes (i suspect Singer if given that mandate by WB would do emo gay supes) but a Superman set in the real world where the villians are formidable and intelligent. The tone of the movie will be different to Bats simply through the persona of Supes and the persona of Metropolis as a city. It is crucial they play it straight. Jon Favreau did a good job with Iron Man and Louis Letterier was not terrible with Hulk. They got the tone right and were talented enough to pull it off. the pallet of the movie should be different from bats, brighter with metropolic being a city of light as opposed to the the dark of Gotham. I actually liked Routh and thought he was the only bit of inspired casting and maybe spacey woulda been good if Luthor was a serious character. But routh needs to hit the goddamn gym ala Bale in Batman and BUlk way up. But otherwise a reboot. NO SINGER!!!! YOU GOT THAT!!!!!!! DONT DO IT!!!!!!!! Use the old Max Fliesher cartoons as your template. Lazer guns. Giant robots. Mafia goons. Dont even bother with the origins crap. Get a man-a square chin, broad shouldered, old hollywood style dude to play the part-not a GQ young 20 something. Get a guy in his 30's or early 40's. And BTW: Singers Supes was the ONLY supes that depicted the powers of Supes in a believable way, i.e. the flying, the bullet in the eye. I love the old Superman II but by and large Donners superman movie was Boooorrrriiiing. And lame. Supes is not a goody two shoes. He's an old soul thats an battle axe.

I agree with Melvin_Pelvis that you need to set a limit on what he can/cannot do. If I recall, he can LEAP a building-not fly over one. If he is basically indestructable save for kryptonite, then whats the point? He should always be the 'Man of Steel', but not able to do anything. He has superpowers, but he's not God.
