With the reviews 'The Hurt Locker' has been getting, Kathryn Bigelow won't be touching a shit sequel to a shit film with a ten foot pole.

Me thinks it will be someone a smidge less talented. How about suggesting a director the material deserves?

just kidding, well not about not seeing it or reading the books, but really at this point, Summit could pull a random name out of the hat and if it was close to the book at all, it'd probably continue to do gangbusters. Here's a couple of off the wall suggestions of people who've worked in the genre before, are good solid directors and need a hit bdly

I realize that the success was based on other factors than the director's skill... but I'm surprised that the producers realize that. They seem to make decisions based on superstition as much as anything rational. I would have thought they would push to make the sequel as similar in every respect to the original as they could.

Plus, I found her to be really cool and would love it if genuinely nice people got rewarded in Hollywood for a change.

With the studio hotsy totsy for a sequel, you've been told that not only will you not get a HUGE payrise to direct it, but they are replacing you.

This is despite the fact that "the hardcore fanbase loves or intensely likes" your film. But those same ungrateful fans are hoping you will "not be a part of the second film".

I don't know about you, but I'd probably have feelings ranging somewhere between feeling a little slighted, and Hulking the fuck out.

On the other hand, Bigelow is a fucking GENIUS and she'd give these films the shakeup and subversion they need. Having just seen the hurt locker, she may be one of the finest set piece directors around - pity that its doomed to bomb and the script has such a ridiuclous moment in the third act that nearly implodes the movie. Up till then its a fucking masterpiece.

If summit claims that hardwicke was emotional and erratic, well, fuck... I mean no one ever stopped Don Simpson or Harvey Weiinstein from working on shit.

I have been coming to this site for a HELLUVA long time. and back in the day, people had fun here, and when there was whining it was directed at the studio system, when there was fighting and arguing, it was between each other in the spirit of geekdom. and now, the next generation is here, and all you can do is PISS ON AICN OVER AND OVER!!

and you're complaining that there is no news on the weekend? first off, GO PLAY BASEBALL or something. second, the AICN staff just can't make shit happen. there have been a few posts here though. I enjoyed, in a sad way, reading Peter Jackson's amazing eulogy for Forrest Ackerman, did you read that? Quint is still going strong with his movie a day column, did you read ANY of those?

Herb West, I've been in the AICN talkbacks for literally almost a decade, under the same name. I've posted reviews for the site, and sent them scoops. I defend this site from people tearing it down. I didn't say one single word to you, until you started calling me a cunt for no reason, and even then, I just sort of half-heartedly made fun of you. that is not a troll. are you so new here you don't even know what a troll is? a troll in the talkback is someone who jumps into a talkback and simply spews hate for the topic at hand, without engaging in meaningful discussion. in rare occasions, it's used to describe someone who spews insults without actually addressing anything in particular.

either way, even if I've been insulting, I've done so because I am legitimately angry at this type of misguided, self-entitled "AICN doesn't cater to my every whim" commentary that Damage was spewing earlier. ummm...isn't alot of that to do with the writer(s) and the producers? A scene like you described would be interesting visually, etc, that is where producers, writers, set designers, DPs, come in with the director to shoot something like that. It's very possible that the producers wouldn't want to put up the coin for a scene like that. you're talking even for a scene like that several days of extra filming, lighting a tree, paying a stunt woman for those extra days, caterers for those estra days, your VFX guys to rig the wiring in a tree, the SFX guys in post to correct it, costin gmore moeny and extra days of work, etc

What you're suggesting goes to the auter theory of filmmaking, which I have serious issues with because it doesn't take into effect the role the writers, producers, effects guys, set designers, etc have on the film.

On TWILIGHT, Hardwicke was given limited resources (30 million is that what I read the budget was?), probably given tight reigns by the producers on what she could film and couldn't, she was holding directing an adaption of a book with a crazy fanbase

I have a little sister in this age range, loves Twilight and Harry Potter, she absoutly hates, the 3rd film in the Harry Potter seris because Curon did exactly what you suggested, changed a lot of things in the book while keeping the intergrity of the story. I have friends that love the Narnia stories but didn't like some of the adaptions made in the movie. Same iwth Lord of the Rings, I have a friend that still bitches that tom Bombidial was cut from the Fellowship

And I also agree that Twilight directors are interchangable. That still doesn't mean Hardwicke shouldn't feel slighted IF she's been dumped by Summit for no good reason.

I haven't seen the movie, but I have some friends (one a Twilight [book] fan, the other her husband) who enjoyed the film, she's seen it 2 or 3 times now, he enjoyed the movie much more then the book, but to me the whole thing looks cheap

I didn't hear about behind the scenes problems, but I did hear about similar things withHardwicke's The Navity Story, can't remember where I read about it, but I did, so it doesn't really surprise me. I think she, as a director, has actually decreased in talent since thirteen.
