this could be good. I really, really wanted to like Hancock, but it just couldn't seem to find solid ground. It wanted to be crude, but not too crude. It wanted to be friendly, but not too friendly. Dramatic, but not too actiony. It was too much of a hodge podge. Now that this is all established, a straightforward story could work well.

I could watch something historical, it could turn out to be significantly different from the first movie in style and tone, though they'd have to avoid any kind of Lestat-esque angst-ridden wankery, or at the very least, pick a tone and stick with it for the whole movie. I enjoyed Hancock, though - a second movie doesn't sound like a bad idea.

The whole movie ahould have just been about an asshole hero; he could've saved the day or whatever without becoming a superman-like Boy scout...when he became heroic towards the end, the movie became "meh". I don't want to see another superhero movie or an exploration of the characters. I want to see Hancock spiking SUV's and terrifying Michael Meyers again.

Smith Should'nt Have F-ed With Ngo's AWESOME Script
by cowboyone
Dec 5th, 2008
09:15:35 AM
Mann and Berg have to cop to some of the responsibility here too. The first act of Hancock is inspired. The second and third acts are fucking ludicrously bad. Those three guys should be embarrassed. After so many years of "Big Willie" box office glad-handling, Smith is falling into the God trap of thinking he's "more" than a movie-star. You don't rewrite Richard fucking Matheson. You just shut the fuck up and film it as it is on the page. Why does he rewrite EVERYTHING he's in? Answer A. Because he can. Hancock could have been BRILLIANT if he had filmed Ngo's original BLACK LISTED script.

The first half was pretty good, up until the "revelation" that you see coming from the opening credits.

From that point on it was an absolute mess.

Indecipherable exposition shouted over meaningless noise and fury. And the exposition I could understand didn't make any sense. Why do they lose their powers if they are near each other? How near? Because they've been in the same city for a long time. And if they are gods apart, but mortal together, why the fuck are they "built" in pairs? And how did they survive for thousands of years if they were always together and therefore mortal?

I watched the extended cut on dvd, which I thought might clarify things a little. But it only extends the first half which was fine anyway.

Another question i would like answered...

How the fuck did Hancock get that heart symbol on the fucking moon. That not only infuriated me, but it made me dislike the film when i might have given it a very minor pass, due to the solid first half.

like most other people, I enjoyed the hell out of the first half of it, but when his origin was revealed, I thought the movie lost its allure. They should've kept his background a secret. However, it would be cool to see him fight a super powered "other" and to destroy the shit out of L.A. because this felt like the first story that approached the damage done in the wake of a "superhero act." Every time a pick up a Spider-Man comic I'm reminded of how much damage he causes to buildings. It's interesting to see realistic take on the super hero genre.

Great premise and good first half hour, but completely falls apart with the Charlize Theron-'Power Girl' reveal. It just did not work. It would have been better as a straight ahead redemption story with just Will Smith and Jason Bateman. Bateman's scenes are the only thing that make HANCOCK bearable; this kills me because I think Peter Berg is a damn good director. I just think he misfired with this flick. THE KINGDOM was great though.

I thought that Hancock was an entertaining superhero film, but felt that the script either needed more work or maybe had been a little overworked. The acting and cast were good, and the effects were great. I enjoyed it more than any of the X-Men or Spider-man films. Those films pissed off my inner comic book geek with their non-adherence to established origins and continuity, whereas there was nothing established for Hancock to screw up. I'm all for a sequel (or even a prequel) to Hancock.

...although i would've been pissed if i had spent money on it. Look, i have no problem with people liking the IDEA of an original superhero creation put on the big screen with that concept. The execution of that idea was crap though. I liken it to a child reading the cliff-notes version of a book and then asked to verbally describe what he just read. There seemed to be scenes missing. Y'know, the scenes that add character and emotional resonance. Batemen just seemed to accept the reveal a little too easily. I know the prison scenes was supposed to develop hancocks change of character, but it seemed too trite. Theron? The immortal with all of her memories? Did she seem at all long lived or emotionally guarded or distant because of her long life? A lot of real opportunities missed there. Now for what really annoys me. The moment theron say's, "we were created in pairs", my first question would have been, "WHO CREATED US?". Maybe if the writers had answered that question for themselves, there could have been a real antagonist for the picture. As it stands, we get some guys with guns who, given the power level of Hancock, should have had absolutely no dreams of getting back at him. That was an incredible leap of logic and it asks too much of my suspension of disbelief to think the one handed bandit would think he'd have a icebergs chance in hell to go up against Hancock. What a coincidence it turned out that hancock was losing his powers when they attacked...lucky that. The movie was a cool concept without a script. Oh, and the flying scenes sucked monkey balls. Why can't anybody beat the flying scenes from a 30 year old movie is beyond me.

Yes, Peter Berg is a fine director, yes, there are good scenes and ideas in the film, yes, it could have been great. But it WASN'T. It is a ridiculous mishmash of tonal shifts, subplots, and ideas that did not get settled in pre or post-production and it shows in the final, incredibly disjointed film which barely explains a thing nor gives you many reasons to care. I like ambitious failures, which is what interests me about "Hancock." But unlike other such failures, it doesn't fully succeed on any level the public ignored. It's just a mess. Please admit it, lest I be faced with another multi-year "it's not so bad, really, you guys" AICN rehabilitation campaign the likes of which we got for the TCM remake and fucking "Hatchet."
A Sequel Could Be Great
by DeeJay
Dec 5th, 2008
11:42:16 AM
Granted, like so many other projects, it would depend on the script. However, consider the foundation that's been put before us. the "I-Heart" campaign's international impact could be explored, as well as the universe of the "gods" which Hancock had been part of. What about their former pets (some of which could be monsters)? What about having some vindictive "god" who planted a seed for mankind to suffer some time after his/her untimely passing... and could this be part of some memories that Hancock is slowly recovering? What happens in the lives of the people Hancock saved? There are a ton of ways to explore the core characters and to expand on what's already been established... they simply need a good script and some more compelling visuals next go-around.

Seriously, three bozos he tossed in the joint go after him. Now, Hancock in invincible. They know this. There is no indication that he's weakening. So all three of them go after him and just happen to catch him while he's weak? Gimme a break. On top of that, they really didn't do nearly as much as they could've with that movie. It fell flat where it could have soared. Sure, there were some good bits, but overall, it was a very lackluster movie.

As another non-Hancock viewer I noticed that too. I didn't (don't) particularly care about this movie (my reaction to the trailer was a good, solid "meh!") and I somehow doubt that this "twist" would have had me rocking back and forth in my chair going "no fucking way! what a twist! wow, I never saw that coming!", but it's still annoying if I do ever watch it.

Even worse that this article spells it out too!

Obviously every film with a twist eventually has to leave the "spoiler moratorium" (the chick in The Crying Game is a guy, guys!), but considering this film is only just coming out on DVD - for many the first chance they will get to watch it - surely that period should last for at least a few more weeks? Come on AICN! Try not to spoil it for us next time...

As for potential sequels, I think I'm about one film away from never caring what Will Smith does again. I had such high hopes when he made Ali. I thought "ok, it's a tailor-made part for him, but this might be the point where he turns into an actual actor", but no! All it proved was that Michael Mann is so good he can get a performance out of ANYBODY! Since then we've had I, Robot (Asimov spinning in his grave), I Am Legend (Matheson making a mental note to spin in his grave once he dies) and the nepotistic cheese-fest that was Pursuit of Oscar... sorry, HappYness. Now he's making a sequel to a film I couldn't care less about! If it's in need of a title, I suggest one of these:

I, Hancock

Happy Hancock

Wild Wild Hancock

Men In Hancock (erm...)

The Fresh Prince of Hancock

I think 90% of us agree that it was an interesting premise, a pretty good setup, but ultimately a long, confusing train wreck. It was like they had no idea what to do with their concept so they just defaulted to turning it into Highlander 2. Which, it turns out, was an awful decision.

I don't think this is a love/hate movie
by Vern
Dec 5th, 2008
12:18:25 PM
I know one guy who likes it alot, but he's a weirdo. It's a hard movie to be passionate about either way because it's so halfway there. Some good ideas, some good scenes, not really any great ideas or great scenes. Not too much to hate it for, not too much to love it for. The use of that Ludacris song pretty much sums it up: they want to show Hancock's "Move, Bitch, Git Out the Way" attitude but they feel they have to censor the word "bitch." (Even in the unrated cut, I heard.) The whole movie pussyfoots around like that. It wants to reinvent the super hero movie, but it still wants to give him a costume and turn him into a super hero. It wants to throw you into a world that already exists instead of giving you an origin story, it still wants to give you an origin story at the end.

I forget how it ends exactly but wouldn't a sequel take away the original part of the movie, that he's a washed up homeless alcoholic asshole with super powers? Wasn't he kind of straightened out at the end?

Anyway hopefully when the sequel is coming out they'll put out a special edition of the first one where the cover gives away the twist to the sequel.

Are the reaons Handcock didn't work. The whole movie just didn't work. There was no chemistry between the two, and Smith just can't come off as unlikeable. He did a good job, they should've had it as Smith and Theron were mortal enemy's that would have been a lot more interesting. I agree with Harry, really solid first half and then a WTF second half. I don't know if I would see a sequel, but with the money it made it seems impossible. Though lets go through Will Smiths sequels, Bad Boys 2 and MIB2...... do we really want Hancock 2 now? MIB2 and BB2 were so over the top and so crazy that they just were overly long and boring. Its like well Will Smith sold the first movie???? How are we going to sell the second one? Granted, it does have the 'From Dusk 'til Dawn' element (two different movies joined at the middle), but this is what made it all the more powerful for me. The first half is Will being Will (charisma coming out of his ears) and you're lulled into a flippant, entertaining popcorn movie. Then as the revelations start to hit, the emotional ante grows and catches the viewer off guard. By this stage you're caring about the characters and suddenly, there's a feeling that they could be in danger, making some of the scenes at the end (hospital) all the more powerful. Possibly my fave film of the year, certainly the best surprise. All for a sequel and hoping we learn what's with all the eagle references...

It was very flawed, and pretty boring. There was also just way to much piss in it. Seriously. Piss stained this, cum stained that. Kids pissing on kids. Hancock pissing and pissing. Farting. Shitting. It was actually kind of revolting to read at times. That script is nothing like the movie, and thankfully so.

so I don't get all the hate for that aspect. The problem for me was just that something was just missing, some "it" factor sorta thing--it was ALMOST great. It didn't commit to Hancock as a troubled screw up, and it didn't commit to the backstory aspect either--two sorta half-told stories. A sequel that goes forward with the two characters, and fills in the backstory could actually prop up the weak structure of the first film.

Maybe shoot the next two films back to back. I just saw it last week and I really liked it. I think the cool turn for the sequel would to have Jason Bateman's character turn out to be a villain in the Osmandeous model. Most villains see themselves as heroes and really his character is actually the most enigmatic with his whole spiel of trying to get corporations to give shit away for free. Plus it will free up Smith and Theron to fall in love again. Really I just want to see Charlize Theron in that sexy black outfit doing all her Storm crap again.

Anybody who thinks this movie was good in ANY WAY does not understand film. This was one of the most poorly written scripts I've ever seen. You have a knockout premise - a drunk superhero who doesn't care about saving people - and you turn it into two immortals in love throughout time????? what the fuck??? Inexplicable moments like tornadoes randomly forming during their battle. An ending to a big action move that was - get this - IN A FUCKING HOSPITAL ROOM!!!??? A villian who liked to hold hands in jail and decided to battle Hancock as an afterthought. Fuck this movie. It sucked huge balls.

is to be negative. Negative is what one can expect from a AICN talkback. I watched Hancock for the first time expecting to hate it because of all the reviews. I absolutely loved it! I couldn't stop laughing! A super hero who's a mess! And then when he gets straightened out the story line becomes even more interesting. I thought it was the most original movie of it's kind in a long time. You cared about the characters, loved the FX, and the humour was right on the mark! I really don't know what some people don't like about it. Reading the replys here haven't really enlightened me much let's take a post from just a few above mine : " But the movie sucked so fucking bad I felt compelled to sign in and just tell how I feel how I fucking hated this film. 'Oh, I've been you're wife for the past 3000 years.' 'But now that we're together again, we've both become immortal.' FUck you hancock ". Notice that person didn't really say what it was he/she didn't like about it. It's been that stuff and I get the feeling not really paying attention ( the closeness issue it was pretty clear to me that they had to be really close for it to really take effect so just being in the same city wouldn't be an issue ). I really liked this movie! As for a sequel I'm not really sure they should do that. I'm thinking it's fine as it is and it didn't have any more to say. But who knows it might be entertaining. You never know.

"Tonight He Comes". Despite my rant on this movie, I want to clear something up about the original script, because I read it. The original script is somehow even worse than this piece of garbage. And in that sense, I understand why they felt they needed to change it. In that script, absolutely NOTHING HAPPENED. It was just one big bore-fest. Of course, they went the exact opposite route - and tried to make EVERYTHING happen. And that was a mistake as well. But enough shit about how the original script was great. It was boring.

I was expecting it to be a complete piece of shit after hearing all these short sighted piss ants bitch about it in the talkbacks and actually it turned out to be pretty good. I think the problem people have is the bait and switch plot but the truth is that the whole "alcoholic superhero" bit is just a set up for a much more captivating story. You're SUPPOSED to see the "twist" from a mile away. Really it's Mary who you're supposed to be identifying with for most of the movie. She's easily the most sympathetic character. I think everyone got thrown off because that's not how Sony marketed it. And if you'll notice that's pretty much why they're marketing it completely different for the DVD release with Smith and Theron sharing top billing. At the end of the day bitchy fanboys just hate Will Smith just because and he get's to laugh all the way to the bank. Good for him.

If you like his movies youa re actively contributing to everything that makes modern genre filmmaking shit. How anyone could claim to be passionate about film and still defend this is just completely beyond me. it's so awful and middling and homogenized, and poorly constructed that I would think only the dense or apathetic among us could possibly get excited about it. Moreover teh guy is just not a very good actor. I mean I can see how he's good enough that the American public would like him, he's certainly charismatic, but how film buffs good get behind such a fucking lightweight is preposterous. It's like LOVING Lindsey Lohan as a thespian. Even as a megastar he isn't as good as, say, Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise's worst fluff is about on par with Will Smiths best, at least the last decade or so. And as an actor its not even comparable. Will SMith will never ever turn in performances as good as Cruise was in Magnolia or Born on the Fourth of July, or hell even Vanilla Sky. Mediocre actor, mediocre megastar. You guys will come around eventually though, you always do.

You've got a point and you're bringing up the one substantive criticism I've heard from a lot of people. All the backstory should have been shown in flashbacks. Instead we got a whole lot of "tell" where "show" would have worked a lot better. That's why a they should do a prequel or at the least go the Godfather 2 route with the next film and split their time between the current plot and flashbacks. I just liked the whole backstory and made me want to see more. I think they're hinting that Hancock, Mary and the rest of their brood were probably the Greek/Roman Gods once. That plus the Adventures of a superpowered interacial couple in the early 20th century would be pretty fun too. I mean they basically lynched Hancock because he took a white girl to the movies. Eitherway, say what you want but Hancock was better than many of Marvel & DC abominations we've seen in the past few years(Fantastic Four. Superman Returns).

the typical superhero spin. They actually presented a clever hypothesis to explain the modern myth of the super-powered being as well as Angels, and any other mythical larger than immortal creatures of myth. Too bad many people thought they were paying to see an out and out comedy and couldn't deal with the true nature of the unveiling plot. That's their problem and it doesn't stop this from being a damn fine fantasy film for those of us who truly have an open mind and a love for the imaginative media beyond seeing the same variation on a drunk-joke for 90 minutes. Jackass TV has a lot to answer for! I welcome a second movie with both arms as well as more Bay adaptation of Transformers. (way better than the cheesy, silly cartoon from the 80's)

The thing that I felt was wrong with the movie was that there wasn't a real villain. I mean you had those bank robber guys, but they sucked. He can still be as nice and as charming and well intentioned as he was in the 1st film. That would make him a better villain because again as history has taught us (and Hancock and Mary would know better than anyone with their 4000 years of experience) the worst of the worst always begins with good intentions. I mean he's already got Hancock as his pawn/muscle and Mary as his wife. A villain scenario with him would begin with Hancock and Mary slowly realizing that they're being pawned and Bateman's character being so wrapped up in his mission for the world that he himself doesn't realize he's a villain. There's your "realistic deconstruction" and it's a hell of a lot more captivating than "Asshole Superhero Learns to Care."

Six Degrees was his best and he does elevate material/projects the way a great athlete elevates his/her team.

Concerning his choices, I've heard that the studios have not always gone for projects he has wanted, so the "pigeon hole" dilemma looks to be real. On the other hand, I understand that he passed on THE MATRIX because he read the script but did not get the story or the Neo character (not the same as Paul in Six Degrees or Chris in Pursuit - just making a point).

I guess there is blame on both sides when it comes to choosing projects that match his full talents.

Maybe a better twist would have been Bateman turning out to be his arch-nemesis with the PR secretly intended to place Hancock in harm's way more and Theron learning the truth etc. etc. This film is a perfect example of screenwriting by studio committee, ensuring any shred of decency is dumbed down to one cut about daytime soap. I see your argument and it's well constructed, but...

I don't think there is anything inherently racist about the film itself. It's your interpretation because of the casting. Switch the Smith/Bateman roles and is it still racist? A black man that rehabs a white man by sending him to jail etc. A white man who lusts after a white woman. The interracial couple together while the white man does gods work?

Is I Am Legend racist because it features a black man who wants to cure the wicked ways of the white man, who would rather just eat him?

I just don't think Hancock is intentionally racist. What it is, is a shit film.

The same roles as written could be played by anyone. What you are doing is projecting your views onto this film because the drunk jerk is black, and the white guy is the "nice guy". If the roles were reversed i doubt you'd think twice. You are looking for racism where it's not applicable.

Should i get upset at the demasculating portrayal of the white man? White mans a pussy. White man requires a black man to save him. White man watches on silently as white wife and black man "lust" after each other. White mans emblem is a pussy little heart while black mans emblem is a big manly eagle.

We could deconstruct every aspect of every film to find negative connotations. Or we could simply try to enjoy them as entertainments.

BlackJackBauer just ruined the movie for me. Its hard to believe it was intentionally done that way though. For one reason, Smith is known for taking roles written for white men and inserting himself, but the perpetuation of negative stereotypes (whether coincidence or not) is not a good thing.

How did Smith miss something so obvious? I guess he's so busy pandering to the masses he overlooks the obvious. You'd think the guy who made Ali would have seen this.

Leave the first half intact, right up to his triumphant return and celebration, with a drunk Ray telling Hancock he loved him. Then show establish that Hancock continues to save the day and suddenly people love him. Have him stop someone who just takes to taunting him, telling Hancock that all the love he's been getting is bullshit. That have Hancock mess up (accidentally). I mean he really FUCKS UP. And people turn on him like never before. Plus, he ruins Ray's reputation, and Ray turns on him as well. Hancock completely withdraws from society. Then some bad shit happens and Ray tries to convince Hancock to save the city. But Hancock can still tell Ray hates him, so he refuses. A little later, left to his own thoughts, he finds out that Ray's wife and kid is now in danger from the current threat, and that causes Hancock to rush in. He risks his own life to save Ray's wife and kid, ends up on the edge of death, but stops the threat and saves the city. Ray genuinely forgives him and the city kinda forgives him, but Hancock realizes that he'll never truly be embraced by the city because of what he uses to be, but as long as there are still people who believe in him, it's a worthwhile fight for redemption. Roll credits.

OMG -- just laffed my ass off. Just cause I think I Jesus in a bowel movement, don't make it so. Seriously, BlackJackBaur (cool handle, by the way), I think y'all goin' overboard and reading way too much into something. Reverse the casting between Smith and Bateman and not change a word... what have you got..? The same meaningless garbage as before. Save the racist card for something important, bro. This ain't it.

destroyed by an unintelligable second act. A movie drowned in religious and fictional historical pyscho babble.

Folks believe what they wanna believe. Don't matter if it's religion or UFOs. And that's fine. But do consider, whilst your argument is perhaps worthy of a film school assignment, you come across as sounding more than a little paranoid. We're just gonna have to agree to disagree. My final word on the subject: "HANCOCK" is a piece of shit movie with no agenda. --- JackRabbitSlim, "METEOR MAN" starring Robert Townsend predated "BLADE" by five years or so. Lol.

I watched the unrated cut on Bluray, seemed like a pretty good movie to me. Is it possible the theatrical cut was a studio hack job?
