I was hoping you'd say sommin' about what Anna Popplewell's spectacular lips look like in Blu-Ray. It's all right, she's nearly 20. No guilt to be found there. Did you know 1 in ever 5 homes in the UK has at least one copy of The Shawshank Redemption. How fookin' smart is that.

Got to agree on Step Brothers. Went in to it expecting the usual Ferrell thing , humorous but not great but I found myself laughing a lot more then I expected . There was a genius moment in it where the two guys had just made bunk beds in their room , freeing up a bit of space. The acknowledge their new found play area John C Reilly does this little ballet leg sweep . its so subtle and you probably would not even notice it but it had me in tears laughing . Maybe its just me .

That movie was insanely funny. I do think there were a couple missteps. Like them both happening to sleepwalk and then sleepwalking around with no point other than to "accidentally" cause trouble. That was just too contrived for me. But who cares? The good stuff is awesome. The end, with the brothers and the kids... for that to be, like, the "uplifting" final moment? Awesome.

The protagonist was a self-absorbed little jerk, and the movie gave us no real reason to root for him, let alone respect him. I'll give the movie this: the effects were amazing. And Angelina Jolie looked frackin' great. But I could not get emotionally invested in this film.

Sorry Harry, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one! You see back in '93 I went to a Crash Test Dummies concert at an outdoor venue here in South Florida. Milla was the opening act and as it often does during our summer nights, we had a thunderstorm. Milla's band kept playing and she finished her set. CTD came out, played two songs and left the stage because of the rain. Everyone there was quite impressed with Milla's performance (not to mention that she looked great wet). I even got her cd, The Divine Comedy. I wonder if I'm the only one on the entire planet to do so.

Gangs of New York might be the biggest mess (video wise) on all of Blu-Ray. Unbreakable looks very below par. And the Color version of The Mist looks hideous. So all films on Blu-Ray don't look great. However, films like 21, Kill Bill and Casino Royale look God Amazing. And even older films like Bladerunner, Dirty Harry and Close Encounters of Third Kind look probably better than when they were originally in the theaters. But that's not the case every time.

Search your feelings, nerdling, you know it to be true. The reason for the long overdue backlash against this trifle of a film is because of the endless parade of dunderheads online who can't help rhapsodizing about how they've seen it 14,000 times and each time it just makes their "widdle" heart burst just a tiny bit more with "wuv." Every single fucking time the word "Shawshank" is typed onto the internet, you get a minimum of 10 follow-up posts that are the equivalent of some backward-hat wearing, four inches of Calvin-Klein boxer-brief showing "homeboy" grabbing their junk and going "Word!!" It's a reaction to the Pavlovian - some might say scarily pathological - need of certain netizens to constantly proclaim to everyone in the fucking universe just how FRICKIN' AWESOME this Tim Robbins prison flick is . . . dude. I swear, whisper the word "Shawshank" randomly in the dark to a cornfed frat boy, and if the inebriants have been freely flowing, you will instantly get some sloppy over-the-belt action, whether that whisperer be equipped with female or male genitalia. It's cinematic catnip for celler-dwellers. It's "Titanic" for boys, with a feel-good Morgan Freeman voiceover and stripey prison jammies. It's a whole weepy Lifetime/Hallmark network compressed into a convenient 2-hour video time capsule that one can easily digest, without too much thought, between Sports Centers. The backlash has been a long, long time coming, but was never unexpected since, online, the movie positively defines the term "over-hyped."

It may be no more than a feature-length episode, but it was such an improvement after the disappointment of the first film. It was just great to see Mulder and Scully again (and in a different light). I like that the film focuses on them and their relationship more than the "mystery" of the case itself, because let's face it, we've seen it all before (and at least it wasn't aliens again). Personally, I won't mind seeing a new X-files movie every five years or so, and you don't need a budget larger than the $30 million this one cost to make these films. Good story, great characters. I look forward to the next one.

Fox had nothing to do with the poor quality of the movie. In fact, their mistake was giving Carter and Spotnitz control to do whatever they wanted with the movie. Those two were always the weak link of the show. It was the work of better staff writers like Morgan & Wong that made The X-Files cool and after their departure, the show spiraled out of control into the mess it is now.

They ended the thing, once and for all, the best way they thought they could. It's a let down, but I am glad they finally put the bullet in the alien mythology. By the end of the series, that had all been made so convoluted and preposterous that there really is no way to resolve it.

There will be no more movies, the only reason they all agreed to do it was to end the series. It's over.

To come up with a clandestine Russian team of doctors retrofitting a gay cancer patient with random female body parts?? Thats the best Carter could come up with? And the relationship between Mulder and Scully, that was LIKE an old married couple in the series, with the teasing and bickering, became, in the movie exactly like an old married couple that just nagged each other. And the story kept them apart in the investigation, with Scully in the hospital and Mulder trudging around with Peet and Xibit. And the boat coda at the end??? WTF

03:10:44 PM
While I agree that Harry saying he prefers The Mist and Green Mile over Shawshank sounds absurd to me given the amount of movies he watches (the amount of movies watched generally = better taste in movies). However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But at the same time, there is a point where opinion becomes fair game for ridicule. Such as people that say The Godfather is overrated, that it insists upon itself. This is very clearly an uneducated opinion that I have heard from people many times over. I think what Harry's comment about Shawshank proves is just because he has the most successful movie news site on the web doesn't mean he knows the difference between a Classic film and a Good film. The same could be said about movie studio heads. Because if they knew what even a good movie was, we as movie viewers wouldn't have to endure 90% of the crap they put out. As another TBer said, just because they put reviews of of Blu-Rays on the site (and Harry goes gaga over every one) doesn't mean it's really any good. This site is Great for news, not so great for reviews for anything (excluding Moriarty, who's the most consistent).

What are you talking about in that "review" or whatever of The Veil? It's on DVD already in various versions and the Something Weird Video version is about as good as it will get. It's also 11 minutes longer than the one shown. Also, IMDB doesn't list an alternate title so why does it say "Tales of the Unexplained featuring Boris Karloff from behind The Veil"? Anyway, no point in ordering something out of stock when there'es plenty of other versions, possibly better, that are available.

Perhaps by the time you trade up your TV, we'll be on to solid state players or holographic versatile disc? Don't blow money on blu-rays if you don't have the screen to take advantage of the res, and don't buy DVDs that aren't bargain priced, or unless you feel it's a title that won't be released again in the future.

I mean seriously, it was a good film, but why is it at the top of the of top 250 list at IMDB. Honestly, is it better than Chinatown? Is it better than Casablanca? WTF?

was a really good film IMO. A bit too long, but those battle scenes were great. That ladder-and-wall action was better than the stuff in "the Two Towers". Besson rocks.

An ex of mine was a big fan of Milla's CD, and played it constantly. I have to admit I liked it very much as well; she sounds kind of Kate Bush-y.

Slooow, boring and so much like Lord of the rings with Susan stepping into Legolas's pointy shoes to fling arrows like an elf and even a bit of Ent help at the end with some river spirit bad guy on horseback bashing too it's shit, shit, shit and makes no sense and i cant believe the book was this shit!? some of it was so shit it was funny like Holy Grail Funny what with the bad guy begging to take five during his sword fight with Prince Willi... sorry Peter and Susan dangling prcariously off the edge of a huge drop only to plop down about a foot onto terre firma it was shit!

then go to her website MillaJ.com, you can download a whole bunch of songs that she recorded over the years. The quality varies since a lot of them are demos, but still great stuff. Hard to top The Divine Comedy, one of my faves of the 90s that I still listen to regularly.

Milla should do a movie where she plays a singer, so we can get that talent on screen. Just make it something original and not some lame biopic of a real musician.

especially because of Beyonce. She's awful. In a Bond movie, she'd have been killed off early on. Too bad that didn't happy in the third Powers flick.

Stay far away from the graphic novel. The writers cleaned up the story for the movie. Now the graphic novel is mean and antisocial no doubt about that.

the film though. They claim up front that this comment about how supervillians are formed. The movie positions Wesley Gibson as a good character because Sloan greed-based Loom-Smithing is worse than Gibson's pure Loom-Faith. The inhumanity comes from the fact that the film doesn't comment on anything (as opposed to the graphic novel).

Although the film does postulate how cool it is to see bullets explode through people's heads -- I'll concede that point.

Also, I liked Prince Caspian because I knew less about the book going in. The first one though is telling the classic story, and I think it's no accident that everyone knows it but so many aren't familiar with Prince Caspian. Unfortunately the classic story is a tale of wonder and discovery that only turns into adventure at end. The movie makers were obviously more attracted to the adventure side of things--is it any wonder that they made a better movie from Caspian as it allowed them to focus more on that than on the wonder and magic? I just don't think the wonder of Narnia translated very well to the big screen. We've seen Middle-Earth come to life already, I think for too many, the cinematic Narnia was just an imitation. That said, I kind of hope they'll make the other books. The Magician's Nephew and the Last Battle are well worth being made! I'd go ahead and write in all the kids into as many of the movies as I can, and add a little more uplifting final words for the Susan character too. But that's me.

with a movie worthy story next time. A missing agent would not bring Mulder back. It was like an okay 2 part episode. The only thing that kept my interest at all was the characters. The should have went balls out, Molder in a unabomber type shack somewhere investigating shit on his own and making money by writing about it. I was hoping for a Doggett cameo but at least we got Skinner for a minute. It just seemed like they were doing this because they were bored. And what the hell was with them still calling each other "Mulder" and "Scully"? They were living together for fucks sake!

Oh god is movie sooo fuckin' awesome. But, no, it isn't as good as Shawshank IMO. Not that either film is comparable. Just because they have the same director and are both adapted from Stephen King novels, that doesn't mean you can say Shawshank is a better life affirming prison drama than The Mist is an apocalyptic horror movie.

Come on Harry, give the X-files movie a chance to just be what it is, and I think you'll appreciate it for what it is, rather than dislike it for what it's not. It IS a long episode. It's a good, thoughtful, atmospheric, character-centered episode with some creepy and imaginative stuff going on. I'm sorry its not on a bigger budget or dealing with Aliens or whatever else it isn't doing, but come on. Shawshank Redemption doesn't have aliens either, but we still think it's pretty good.

I don't need my X-files to be big-budget extravaganzas. X-files was a versitile show and to me, this movie nailed the spirit and character that made me love the series. That having been said, there's a lot which X-files is that the movie is not (funny, epic, paranoid, flashy) but you can't expect one movie to be everything. Enjoy it for what it is: a really interesting, focused, and bleak two-parter straight out of season 3 or 4. Why does it have to be anything other than that?

the whole thing was like it was filmed for a laugh during lunchtime (and edited in between other work too.

At least Ferrell and Reilly are fantastic together. I don't think Reilly could be bad if he tried. But the film itself sucked. Apart from the ending. I'll give 'em that. Fucking awesome.

THE MESSENGER is a god awful picture. The movie looked great and all, but all it was was Mila whining, screaming and crying (and not in a good way) for two and a half hours. It was so over-the-top, so over-done, I could barely get through it. And I'm a glutton for punishment. I've seen EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH twice. Watching THE MESSENGER made me question who the hell would follow this whiny bitch more than anything. Joan of Arc had to be stronger willed than that. She was supposed to have inspired entire armies to follow her. Mila's portrayal couldn't get the Beverly Hills girl scout troop to follow her out of a shit sticking contest. I swear, the movies you guys recommend sometime. By far, Luc Besson's worst Hollywood picture. Probably the reason he didn't direct another film for 16 years.

To do this column. I know you're a busy guy, but I also know that this column provides a certain amount of revenue to help keep this great site afloat. And when I see that a week goes by where the BIGGEST home video release of the year (The Dark Knight, of course) could have been clicked on THOUSANDS of times to help boost the site and yet, because of how busy you are, you can't get it done in time, well, that just makes me think that you really, really need to consider hiring someone to take on some of these things that you just simply don't have time to do anymore. Let's face it, you're a busy cat. I get it. And on top of your business dealings you are losing weight at such a quick rate that Yoko has got to be showering you with sexy time as motivation to keep up the good work. So I understand that you don't have the time like you used to. And as you know, it's not just 1 week that passes by. Sometimes it's 2 or even (yikes!) 3 weeks that pass by, which has to be costing the site a significant amount of cash. Granted, the amount is always relative. Is the site kept going solely by the purchases from the DVD Release page purchases? No. But it's gotta help a little. And I'm sure that doing that column is something you have a personal affection for, but there are many of us Lesser Geeks who look to your reviews for guidance as to whether or not a film may interest us enough to purchase. I know it's a lot to consider, but at least think about it. Your humble Lesser Geek, 2dope.

Forgive me for saying so, but it doesn't even make sense to me to put this out on Tuesday. Most people will have found another avenue for purchase by the date of release. If you want to do the site justice by raising money from dvds through Amazon, why not list them the Sunday before. Or better yet, the week before. I will admit that clicking through a few times a day to see if Harry has got it together does bring the site more traffic. If these were class assignments, Harry would be failing. Instead, he's just costing his site revenue.
