It's not essential to watch the first episode, but it's not essential to watch Baccano itself either. The first episode is an entertaining 25 minutes that is not invalided by the rest of the series. It's fascinating if confusing, and viewed in retrospect, you'll note that it does something interesting things. Plus, you can watch it for free online. (via the link in the header)

There were still some random scenes here and there though that I did not get involving some groups of characters whom you never see except for one frame... Maybe there's gonna be another season???
