Who had the idea that they should cast Supes & Bats middle aged for JLA to avoid casting problems with the Nolan & Singer franchises. I think that would work and pacify fans. But we all know that WB would never do that... Movie execs seem to like their leads to be as young as possible - hence the casting choices for Wonder Woman et al... "Wonder Girl" is more like it. Idiots.

And Watchmen is their next superhero film which deals with an ensemble team so if anything Justice League (if it ever flippin' happens) will probably be tonally closer to the nolanverse just because studio executives are pinheads who go with what worked for them before. Of course they'll try to get Bale to be Batman. Justice League is also their only hope to save the Superman franchise. A revamp or redo sequel to Returns will have the same effect that Incredible Hulk had where moviegoers will stay out of the theater because of they were burned by the shitty predecessor. They should do Justice League first with Routh or whoever the hell they want to recast and then relaunch Superman from there.

Besides, Snookeroo is right; despite Superman Returns making money and pulling in mixed but positive reviews and TDK being a 3rd deck grand slam home run, The bothers Warner otherwise have no idea what do do with their DC properties.

You guys are wrong re: Miller's JLA
by half vader

The JLA babies was ALL WB, not Miller's idea. So no, it was completely WB's idea to cast so young. BTW You've got your wires crossed on Wonder Woman, Codymr. She was the only one actually in her thirties in that ensemble.

As for the Bond analogy, that's silly. You don't even HAVE to go that far - comic book fans are used to these SAME characters looking cmopletely different (and the writers even changing their personalities) on a MONTHLY basis when the artists and creative teams change. It's never been a real problem there, and that's been going on for more decades than Bond.

You are right, Megan Gale is my age right down to the month... I thought I read that she was younger... My bad.

Still, the cast is otherwise in their mid to late 20s... in my opinion, I'd like to see these heroes portrayed as a little older and wiser. Artist Alex Ross always gives his interpretation of the DC heroes an interesting look... that is what I'd like to see. Hell, I'd go for a film version of Kingdom Come - that would be a great JLA movie.

Sure, TDK was awesome to the extreme, but can you honestly picture that kind of Batman in a JLA movie? Then you have Superman - a character impossible to sympathise with, Wonder Woman is just shit, Flash & GL would be pushed to the back & Martian Manhunter would get shafted as always.

I think WB are going to worry about this later. They've got other problems with their DC universe to worry about. All they're going to do is maybe have a character pop up here and there in each other's solo films first, and it's not like those are even set yet. I mean, WB is probably more worried about stuff like, will Nolan return, what do we do with Superman, should we cast Zac Efron in a wig and dress as Wonder Woman etc. etc. It's a big responsibility and they should do it right. Because of the characters involved they will have to do justice (sorry) to each character and it has to be epic in scope.

But they need Bale and Routh. Just minimize their screentime and push the other characters to the foreground.

The problem is that Nolans Batman and even Singers Supes (to a lesser extent) have been grounded in a somewhat plausible reality, so for all of a sudden have other, more "comic book" type characters in that world would be hard to mesh.

Anyway, I've always thought Fincher would make a bad-ass superhero flick. Although I'd prefer he do The Avengers.

He has a hot-as-hell woman lined up as Wonder Woman. Check out Megan Gales photos online as her dressed up as Betty Page (with black wig) and you can easily see her as Wonder Woman. JLA was a huge movie to take on. Better to take on one character first and prove yourself to the world that you can handle superhero pictures on a large scale. He really should direct Wonder Woman. If anyone can do that fil justice, it should be him.

You would have thought WB would be all over this and hell even though Superman Returns was judged as disappointing it still made $400 million so having Bale and Routh would give this a step up, however perhaps Nolan and co have a say on Batman and perhaps WB want to focus on Batman sequels and that series in general. Also I cannot see Bale's Batman in a JLA movie at the mo, his character is in such a dark, dark place (no pun intended) and he needs lots of stuff to resolve in the next film for his character to come back as a fully fledged superhero for Justice League.

Thank fuck Mr Miller has jumped off that crappy JLA movie... the vibe around it smelt very baaaaad! I'd be up for Mel Gibson back in Mad Max 4... Look at Harrison Ford in the new Indy... And he's older than Mel Gibson! As I recall, Mel Gibson made two heartfelt TV apologies for his drunken racist comments on "the Jews", so can he be forgiven? He got crucified (!!!) over The Passion by Hollywood - it claimed he stereotyped the Jews - but every other racial group is stereotyped in Hollywood films... and while we're at it, readers: Tom Cruise was NOT "The Last Samurai". The titled referred to the troop of samurai he hooked up with. Yes, "samurai" is the plural form as well.

Why was the project abandoned?

I think George Miller would have done a great job. Yet this film never felt right to me. Coming in the middle of the Batman run. Also it felt rushed to me. This project never got it's momentum back after the writer's strike. I liked the casting of Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman. Everyone else wasn't that inspiring. Marvel are doing it right for The Avengers. Another case of the Superman curse.

General story leaks are enough to dismiss a project?

Have we not learned anything, that we're now dismissing projects based on nothing more than general story points? You can make any movie sound bad on general story points. Yeah, Miller's JLA was supposedly based partially on two popular JLA story arcs, The OMAC Project and Tower of Babel. And that's a bad thing how? Especially since we don't have a real clue to the specific details of the adaptation. The devil is in the details. Fans overreact and jump to conclusions all the time. And somehow nuance disappears with seemingly no middle ground between Rulez and Sucks. There's a difference between "belief" and "fact" and fans are among the worst at recognizing it.

He just wasn't really interested in doing anything like that or Lethal Weapon anymore. He said those films seem "trite" to him now. That was a few years ago, so maybe he's had a change of heart. As far as JLA goes, the last thing I heard was that this project didn't include Superman or Batman, but was about the other minor characters. I felt that if the threat facing the earth wasn't important enough for Batman and Superman to show up for work, it wasn't much of a threat to begin with. And for the guy who mentioned Mike Grell: You rock! Bring on the GRIMJACK movie! Brign on the JON SABLE: FREELANCE movie!

I'm kinda with Vern (not always though huh, Vern?) on this one. Miller would have rocked it way more that most of you realize. Miller has taken just about every genre of film and excelled at pushing the boundries, all while still keeping a great story. If you watch all of Miller's movies (as completely diverse as they are), you realize that this guy can take anything and turn it into gold. Opportunity missed, I say.

And a big FU goes out to another f'n exec for spoiling it for us. First it was Avi Arad forcing Raimi to use Venom when Raimi swore up and down that he would leave Venom to the next director. FU Mr. Arad. Then it was WB (Not too sure who specifically) telling Miller to go with a younger cast instead of the 30+ crowd Miller was skewing for. I can't blame George for throwing his hands up and admitting defeat (after SO much GM's life was invested in it. Those who say, "He should just walk away" haven't the slightest clue of how films are made. People put their entire life on the line for (in many big-budget films) years at a time even before production. Working 10-16 hour days with 1 day off/week when it starts shooting for around a month, and so much more. It ain't easy making it all look so easy)

One fellow above suggested that Miller take on Green Lantern (my fave). As much as that would rock my world inside out, Greg Berlanti is already well underway (though so was Supes II when old Mr. (mo)Lester took the reigns, so...). Man, how huge would that have been. How about some news, AICN??? Huh?

Whoever asked for a M. Bay-directed JLA, give your head a shake. Do you really want more contmoprary humor than stoyline? If Bay was a producer and perhaps had a director like Soderburgh (sp?) who could handle ensemble casts and have a decent storyline, maybe. Or (if we're just supposin') how about Clint Eastwood directing? Huh? Too much?

Excuse the spelling mistakes above. I get on a tangent and the writing skills go out the window.

I would love to see another Mad Max film, too. I would like to see it be as raw as the first Road Warrior and as advanced (and weird) as Thunderdome (though hopefully better in execution). Max should still be a loner, perhaps a final mission because he's dying or something along those lines to give it some 'heavyosity' (patent pending).

Vern. If you're implying that whiners on the internet have any major control over the Hollywood process, perhaps you should write a book about that. File it under fiction BTW.

And besides, Miller is only part of the problem with the whole concept of a JLA movie. The fans want the heroes in their own stand-alone films first, not some toy-commercial clusterfuck. I honestly hope this project permenantly crashes and burns.

Babe and Happy Feet when they think of George Miller? What?

Happy Feet might not have been the perfect, cuddly, CG-animated-animal movie, but the concepts therein were pretty out-there (ask Wyrm).

And if you didn't 'get' Babe,(yes, I meant cry like a school-girl) then you are a cold-hearted, soul-less SOB who doesn't deserve anything nice, anyways (just make sure that your karma doesn't ruin it for others. Oops, already has (read article header). Joo Hhid-Eots. You know that you're just screwing yourself anyways).

Still waiting for an actual link to GM's article, AICN...

That totally contradictory re-workings of the same characters are now standard in the DC publications and that doesn't seem to have hurt anything even the tiniest little bit? Do you really think it would be that much harder to have contradictory Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Womans floating around in the public mind??? Really??? You think the remake of Batman caused people problems because it didn't reference the Burton versions?

...Miller was the one element of this project that made it seem worthwhile. Now it's still going to be made, with the same sort of jailbait catalog models and VH1 "artists" in cosplay outfits fighting CGI abominations while Fall Out Boy plays in the background, except it'll be Ratner or Norrington acting as a proxy director for the WB suits, instead of George Miller actually trying to turn this into something resembling a JLA movie.

I guess maybe if we bitch and moan loud enough, a Christmas miracle might happen, and zombie Orson Welles will come back to direct this and convince John Williams to score it and Daniel Day Lewis will play every role and it will be rated NC-17 for graphic man-child situations and sheer awesomeness... but, call me a cynic, I don't see that happening.

The cast was terrible.
