mother hell. it wasn't enough to have to read about what is undoubtably a heart breaking film, but then to end the review telling us all you are going to leave AICN? that's just too much. at least I know where to find your reviews. but i won't be seeing this movie. i can tell that it ends in sadness. too much sadness in the world for me right now. maybe someday.

Mori,

That's too long a review for any movie! I read the whole thing, but appreciate brevity when it comes to critiques...which you sometimes offer. I'm sure others will disagree, but shorter (and more concise) is almost always better, and something I miss about the printed word, opposed to the boundless space offered online.

Shorter, next time! Please!

did you REALLY read the whole thing? because not only is it a long and complex film that touched the reviewer deeply and would therefore warrant a longer review, on top of that Mori announces at the end that he'll be leaving AICN, and your response is to condescendingly critique his reviewing style?

Moriarty, thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been reading AICN since i was 17 years old, which is to say closing in on a decade. My first real memory of reading your work was hunched over my parents computer reading your initial script review for The Fountain in a state of utter shock and awe. To me you have been the voice of reason on AICN in many ways. Some one who, even when i disagree with your take on a movie, I can totally understand your point and where you are coming from, luckily those moments have seemed to be few and far between. THANK YOU once again, i will be sure to follow you to your new home and read your ramblings while lurking in silence for another decade or so.

for leaving to "HitFix" and it better not be money. You would leave a site run by people who live and breath movies like Harry for what, I assume, is a pop-culture blog for idiots. First of all: good review, thank you. Secondly: It's quite shocking and sad to see you go, Mori. But as a great German author once put it: "for each beginning bears a special magic" (jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne). I wish you that special magic over at hitflix. I suppose most of the people in this TB have already signed up over there for their constant Mori-fix. I wonder what aicn will be like without Moriarty and what Drew McWeeney will be like on hitflix...or what the fuck hitflix is anyway. I guess it's time for a book containing Mori's best work on aicn...plus the talkbacks of course.

And you're spot on Mori. After awhile you forget about the wonderous effects at work to tell this great story. There was a Q&A after the film I saw. Frank Marshall said he's been involved with the film in one way or another for 18 years. And Fincher said it was really only in the last 7 that they thought FX were to a place where it would serve the story and not distract. A funny aside, the costume designer was asked about the red dress that Cate wears in one of the key scenes. She said she had to fight for red because Fincher doesn't like to shoot the color. Fincher replied "Unless it's splattered on a wall..."

...thats one less reason to come to AICN. Moriarty was easily the best writer and reviewer on the site. Without Mor and Quint there'd be no reason to visit.

The site has become so closely tied with directors and studios that its started pandering. Either AICN, at the behest of the suits, takes down leaked news OR the news is so old that even the studios don't care.

Even Harry's reviews, you don't see a love of film there anymore. It's become pure hyperbole without an ounce of clever whatsoever. And when he's not spouting shit like 'chocolate covered pussy juice' he's just jerking off his new movie making buddies. His reviews provide no insight and have actually become embarassing to read.

I'd leave outright too but I appreciate the movie-a-day bits so much. I guess one reason to visit is better then none.

I have to admit, though, I'm wondering if I saw the same film as everybody else. I didn't really find the film terribly interesting or engaging except as a technical exercise, and I wondered what the point of the whole thing was, other than to give the Academy some warm-fuzzies and slam-dunk nods (Pitt and Blanchett both take the nod, Blanchett wins it). I found it flabby, to be honest, and I STILL wish Fincher would have his toys taken away or express anything resembling an OPINION.

I'm being very serious. You leaving makes me think of my own journey since this site began and just how important aint it cool has been to me. I started coming to this site over a decade ago when I was just a kid. Back then I was incredibly introverted and had absolutely no idea what the hell I wanted to do with my life, but I knew one thing, I loved movies. The internet at the time was brand new for me and since I was always the last kid in my incredibly small New England town to have the new technological whatever of the day I would come here only during study halls in school and whenever possible at a friends house. It was absolutely incredible to me that I could have access not only to this kind of unadulterated movie news (the term spoiler was brand new) but that I could have access to fellow fans as well. This really awoke something in me and took a passion that I had always had and made it into something more, something serious and tangible. Over the years as I matured so did my tastes and it became apparent that I was going to have to put my convictions into action and that action was going to have to be working in film. Through all that, and Im not exagerrating here, your voice stood out critically above all the others. It's gonna sound really cheesy, but I just thought you were pretty fucking awesome as I was growing up. It felt like one of the fans, someone like me, had gotten a voice and was really using it for the power of the good of film. And that really goes for all the editors on this site, but to me you stood out the most.

I remember back a bit after episode 2 when Episode 3 rumors were running about and a piece of concept art supposedly of Vader right after he was burned and turned into something "more machine than man" was hitting the web. You ran a story about it but had decided not to show it. I was incensed, and I railed LOUDLY int he talkbacks about what a sell out you were and how this is the death of what aint it cool news stands for. its hilarious now, your explaination that you were gonna sit on it to allow better info int eh future to come out rather than put Lucasfilm on lockdown for a tiny shred of info was more than reasonable, but this was like 5 years ago and believe it or not I was even more fiery than I am now. but, lo and behold, and hour later the picture showed up in my e-mail, my punk rock ethos had struck a nerve (no matter how unreasonable) OR, and more likely, you just wanted to shut me up. Either way you could have knocked me over with a feather. At the time this seemed like really important info and Star Wars back then meant EVERYTHING to me so to have something that not many others were seeing was like heaven. It really truly meant the world to me, and it pretty much got me on your side forever.

Cut to present day, I live in LA now following my dream, which seems about a bazillion miles from where I was when I discovered this site. We've corresponded informally over the years since and it was a real treat meeting you at the Trick or Treat Screening a month back. I had sort of figured, given your advanced stage of family and career, that your days here may have been numbered but I didnt really want to think about it so when I read the end of this review it pretty much made me go numb I was so shocked. As I read those sentences I knew what you were getting at and thinking "Say it aint so!" the whole time. But, as you said, nothing lasts, and I suppose its a natural progression. But I will say, you're still my favorite film critic, period, and whatever you get payed here it probably isnt what you deserve in an age when Ben Lyons can talk completely out of his ass in front of a camera and disgustingly get a lot more. I've already signed up at hitfix and Ill be checking out what you got there. But I just want to say, thank you. Your work, when I agree with it and when I don't, has meant something to me and has made a mark on my own personally journey, and hopefully that wont change with the scenery. Here's to putting our futures behind us.

I still think Mori deserves major, major props

Although I'm disappointed that you don't like Forrest Gump. I can understand Big Fish as that movie divided people. But Forrest Gump?? Actually everyone here but harry has good taste. But if one had to put balance into a group like AICN, it had to be Mori. He always put reviews into a deeper side of cinema, explaining its powerful messages while giving an honest approach within each viewing. Kinda like vern, but less funnier and a bit more emotional while throwing more references to his son than they are to california in red hot songs. But it was a welcome change, and hes the testament to that of what happens when us fans will eventually become IF EVER we do have families of our own. A PARENT. I could only imagine how it might change me as a fan and my perspective on film, keeping that same geek soul but with a step deeper into adulthood. And yet i can somehow relate that to Mori, whos been through that growth and maturity as a fan while still trying to find that same answer between movies and life. So thank you Mori for being the geek inside us all, while still opening our eyes just a little bit more from places we have yet to see. You said "nothing lasts", but being who you are it seems after all these years even with its quality beginning to diminish you still never lost your faith in film. And thats something we can always look forward to. With this day marked, this place should just now be called "Aint what it used to be" Good luck and godspeed.

You've been my favorite reviewer on this site for the better part of a decade, and I'm sad to see you leave. Best of luck in the future! Unfortunately, this site stopped being about good movie reviews quite a long time ago. Of course I don't know a thing from the outside looking in, but it seems a lot of deals with the devil were made as far as what you all would/would not write about in exchange for early access? I'm sure the politics of these things is difficult. Your work has been the best on the site by far, though, and you will be missed!

Yes, it's beautifully shot and the make-up is pretty stunning but the characters are paper-thin and the overall story is exceptionally tedious. Without the reverse aging gimmick there is no story of interest here and even with that gimmick, Benjamin Button is so flaccid and lifeless over the course of his life, I'm not sure this twist provided him (or us) with any new insight into the human experience. A shame too, because the film is instantly mesmerizing but then becomes a total train wreck in its neverending second half. A major misfire from an otherwise brilliant director.

This Movie Is Not That Good

At the screening, director David Fincher was asked what he’d like people to take away from this film, to which he replied, "Er, er, er..." I’ll spare you the 7 "er"s that followed, but my viewing of the film confirmed this: Mr. Fincher, a gifted storyteller, has created a film he knows nothing about. The short story is only 7 pages long, and a quick net search will allow you to discover on your own why it's one of Fitzgerald's lesser-known works -- it's not that great. In the story, Benjamin is born with the mind of an old man as well, speaking perfectly and full of attitude. The biggest problem is that living life in reverse is not all that different. There's more "arrogance of youth" in a wise 50 year-old mind in the body of a 25 year-old, and it says something about discrimination that Ben is never treated "appropriately" at any age. But in either direction, we live a bit, then we live really fast, then we lose the ones we love, then we lose ourselves. Changing directions is, then, not nearly as enlightening as the film thinks it is. Worse, Fincher admitted that neither he nor screenwriter Eric Roth even READ the story, choosing instead to be inspired by its mere premise. And in ditching one of the main themes (in the film, Ben is born only physically old - his mind is a child), it is robbed of what little substance it had. The final mistake is a key choice that Ben makes in the final hour of this 3-hour (!) tale, which I won’t spoil. I will say that it is devoid of any logic, compassion, or selflessness, and completely derails the intended sentiment, nullifying the greatest statement the movie had to make. It is tragic, then, that everything else in this film is so darn good. It is beautifully photographed, acted, and written -- there is just nothing behind the curtain. Mr. Roth actually wrote this film before his adaptation of the vastly superior "Forrest Gump." I'll bet the bank that he read that book.

I didn't say I was a "hardcore" Fincher fan. I don't fap to The Game or replace all the V's in my sentences with 7's. Having loved the trailer for Button, I was perfectly down for a more lyrical, sentimental personal odyssey from Fincher. What I got instead was a soulless, tiresome film that oddly seems more interested in Oscars than telling a meaningful story. Again, the craft on display is top-notch. But I think Topaz nailed it above with: "Mr. Fincher, a gifted storyteller, has created a film he knows nothing about." I don't think it's a terrible film by any means. I certainly don't hate it. But wow, is it so not the masterpiece that some are lazily claiming. This film's purpose appears more in line with The Color Purple, itself a film made by a supremely talented director who seemed to think that it was simply time to win an Oscar but didn't really earn it until he laid the groundwork with Empire of the Sun and then finally crossed the finish line with Schindler's List. All my two cents, of course.

That would have been an excellent point for the film to explore. Sadly, it doesn't. ***SPOILER*** Benjamin opts out of being father to his newborn daughter because he will eventually become a child as she's growing up. He wants her to have a normal father, not a playmate. That could have been GREAT idea for character conflict but the film completely chickens out on that front. Plus, because Benjamin abandons his family, he spends much of that mature mind/young body era off-screen or coasting through montages. When we do get to see him as a boy, his mind has aged into that of an old man with dementia, so the film skips over that could-have-been-fascinating concept you bring up.
Thanks for the visual, Danny. I'm not hungry, now.

with the mind of an adult. I even like the notion of Ben becoming an infant, despite it being a bit illogical. But Ben, when he is younger, should be allowed to have a wiser, older man's mind, still sharp, mind you, coupled with an ever younger body. If not, then all we're really watching is a film in which someone is dealing with a cripling disorder in their youth, grows stronger, and then runs away when things get more complicated. Where, exactly, is the message in this?

And the best of luck to you in your new endeavor - I'll bookmark the site now. I will miss your reviews and commentary here, though. It truly is the end of an era for AICN.

Hmmm, interesting question. No, I don't think so. ***SPOILERS*** Another weird part of the film is that no one seriously questions Benjamin's condition. It's not quite magic realism because people do acknowledge that he's aging backwards, and they discuss the issues attached to that phenomenon, but no one ever properly sends him to the doctor once it's established that he really is aging backwards. He never becomes the national headline he would in the real world. Only at the end does a doctor chime in on "young" Benjamin's condition. Even Benjamin himself doesn't really seem that bothered by it. He's surrounded by death for nearly the entire film but rarely seems affected by it, even when he loses those closest to him. He also doesn't seem particularly moved by being a father. He just quietly accepts himself as this curiosity and coasts through life to the end. The more interesting parts of his life are glossed over in narrated montages and instead we get stuck with a lot of the in-between logistical filler of his life. One of the rare occasions when his condition becomes a benefit is when he loses his virginity as an old man with the stamina of a teenager. The prostitute he beds can't keep up. An amusing minute buried in a nearly three hour movie. It's almost like Benjamin is Dave Bowman at the end of 2001, merely observing how mysterious forces are manipulating his life, never once fighting for a destiny of his own design. He's merely along for the ride. A very passive character.

I gotta say, the stuff you were saying about a movie affecting you differently depending on what time in your life you are at, and it affecting you so much really applies to Synecdoche, New York. I cried for at least a half an hour after seeing that movie, not because it had sad moments, but just because I felt such a strong impact from watching the movie. Everything you said about this movie and time, I would also apply to Syecdoche, New York. I'm not slighting this film at all for that of course, but I just like that there are two movies that are moving people so strongly.

This was a great review and I am just as excited now as ever. It's gonna be a better Christmas for movies than I thought.

You are a grea sport with all our TB bull shit, a great writer, and it's gonna be lame not having you around as much. Good luck in he future!

When I saw the link for your review, I almost didn't read it because your reviews nearly always have so many spoilers that they ruin a movie for me. But a little voice said to read it anyway, that it wouldn't matter for a movie like this, that plot points wouldn't spoil anything. And I was right. But more importantly, I'm glad I read it so I could find out about your future plans. I feel like this is the ending of an era. I mean, AICN, to me, has always been a family - as dysfunctional as any good family, but as fulfilling as well. And any family that could run the gamut from your considered approach to that of reactionary talkbackers like Danny Glover's Dickblood - well, that's something special. And this site has been more than just a family; it's been an entity in itself. Harry, with his over-the-top grossout sexual metaphors and love for almost any movie, no matter how bad, is the big, loveable heart. Quint is the chutzpah. Massawyrm is the balls. Mr. Beaks is part of the intellect. Capone is one part heart, one part intellect, and one part balls. Yeah, I know, the analogy is wearing pretty thin...and anyway, you get the idea. But you, Mori, you're the soul. Every positive review I read from you, whether I agree or not (and most often, I do) makes me examine a movie that much more closely to see if I might find time in my busy life to see it. Harry has already said that you'll "rue this day," and I couldn't tell if he was genuinely angry or just hurt; but I think most of us will rue this day in one way or another. I'll be sure to go check you out at your new home. And if it's about money, I'll just say that, in your situation, I can understand completely. You've got a family to think of. Just don't forget your other family. Come back for holidays and reunions. Let us know how you're doing. We're all going to miss you here (although I've already got a new bookmark), and I think I speak for most people here when I say it's been one hell of a ride. Goodbye and Godbless.

We all saw the trailer and we all saw the advertisement for a film in which the character has a fresh perspective on life. Now, according to Karl (and admittedly, he could be anybody)it would seem that this film doesnt actually follow through with this. Instead, save for a special effect gimmick, we get a character who is passive, and, it would seem, is ultimately a coward.

I've been haunting this site over ten years now as well. My most vivid early memory of AICN that got me hooked was Harry's August 29, 1997, "Judgment Day" post that mused over how awful the Skynet apocalypse would be, as it would deprive us of so many great upcoming films. (This piece of course culminated in the greatest shared anticipation of all: Episode I.) Moriarty has been an integral part of this site, and it's very difficult to imagine what this place will be without his writing. I had the privilege of seeing him in person since moving out to LA and catching a couple Q&As he did with filmmakers. It was nice to finally put a face to the name. Anyway, I know this isn't the very end, but since this is where the first announcement resides, I wish Drew godspeed and the best for you, your family, and your future professional endeavors.

Going by some negative comments made about the film by some other US talkbackers who've also seen it, I think this will possibly flop. Paramount and Warner Bros went halves on it to minimise the risk, but still it went way over budget, for what it could've been made for, plus it's also 2 hours and 45 minutes.

I agree, The Game is a very strong film, perhaps Fincher's most underrated. In many ways, I see The Game as being a far more personal film to Fincher than Benjamin Button. Some people might see The Game as a gimmicky film, a cinematic puzzle to be solved once and discarded. Frankly, that's how I feel about Button. It's simply not a life worth retro-living, IMHO.

There will be a Walmart review site one day mark my words! IGN sold out and really they are the kings of video game reviews. Sure not everyone favors them, but they get the most traffic. If there was an IGN like AICN site- This place would be in trouble. Yes IGN does the movie thing, but it doesn't do it exclusively. If that's true, it reveals my problems with him and is typical of Hollywood to the extreme. Fincher is a brilliant technician with no emotional core. And try as his devoted fans contend, there's no "there" there. But really, not bothering to read the Fitzgerald story you're making into a near 200 million dollar film reeks of the worst kind of arrogance. And lack of insight. This film looks like more Fincher technical porn.

When you see the movie, you'll understand. ***SPOILERS*** It's not just certain obvious similarities like his job on a boat working for a crazy, outspoken captain, or him having a baby with his childhood sweetheart, or traveling the globe throughout important moments in world history, or going away on a long spiritual walkabout to figure things out, or that cutting edge visual effects are used to enhance his journey/create the gimmick, etc. It's the overall tone, the music, the narration, the structure ad even little details such as the recurring feather in Gump is matched by the recurring hummingbird in Button.

The similarities are there if you want to see them. If you don't, and have bought into the film hook, line and sinker, you can probably find ways to differentiate. For me? The similarities (especially given that both Gump and Button's scrips were written by the same person) are crystal clear and disappointing.

While Mori had a warning he certainly didn't outright spill what happens in the END, which is what happened here in the TBs WITHOUT warning. And then people thought it was just open slather because the beans had already been spilled. Which is moronic. Maybe that's what Bear is getting at (care to expand Bear?), which would be fair enough. If Mori had spoiled it, fair enough, absolutely, we get what we deserve. But that's not what happened, and there are probably plenty who came into this one because of the leaving thing (which probably should've been a separate post).

And it's also fair enough to say fuck anyone who spoils the ending before the bloody thing has even come out just in general. You're just so cooler-than-thou.

There's a SPOILER tag on this article and absolutely no mention of Moriarty's departure in the headline. Anyone who proceeds beyond a SPOILER tag has been clearly warned and are here at their own risk, having chosen to expose themselves to potentially any and all spoilers regarding this film. So your insulting "cooler-than-thou" comment is not warranted, especially since I made no personal attack against Bear -- who, by the way, made no specific complaint against discussing the film's ending. He wrongly demanded that people stop talking about the film ENTIRELY until December 25. I merely pointed out his (and now your) flawed logic.

You didn't read my post properly. People are coming in here because word is spreading about Mori, even as you say there's no mention in the head. They're coming in to comment on not just BButton but Mori (that much is obvious by the number of Mori-related posts). Yes, my theory that that was what Bear might be talking about, and I even called on him to clarify. I don't see how that's anything like a definitive statement on my part, but whatever. I see your point about the "entirely" thing and just offered up a theory that seemed well, less ludicrous than that. 90% of the point of AICN and the talkbacks is being excited about films and speculating together before their release. Even if you do read spoilers, I think it's fair to say revealing what happens in the END of the movie is on another level of the arsehole meter.

That's right. The spoiler tag was on the article. I already said that and admitted that if you read it you deserved what you got. Remember? However Mori did NOT spoil the ending and reveal what happens specifically to BB. Right? And neither did you. I was actually talking about fuckholes like Rowdy Roddy Striper. No spoiler warning on HIS post, was there? That cooler-than-thou crack was aimed at fuckwits like him, not you. Why would you take offence?? Can you see how I'm getting at separate things here? Spoiler tag on the article. No spoiler warning on arsehole TB post. With me? It's one thing if people discuss what has been revealed in the article, fair game. This was something else. Then there's the separate thing of me positing a theory about Bear to you because I didn't think it could possibly mean what you thought it did. Cheers.

The Hugh Jackman thing. I must admit, sometimes I miss the forest for the trees even though I post deadpan stuff myself. God knows if there were both an italics option and a (limited window) edit feature (to stop renegging after the fact), there'd be a lot less misunderstanding. The Jackman thing was clever because it threw into relief that people find excuses to hate Kidman just to support that they basically just don't like her in the first place. Yes HJ was every bit as broad and ridiculous - but when EITHER of them had more than a couple of lines and therefore were driving the performance (as opposed to Luhrmann), BOTH of them tried to tone it down.

As for italics and edit function, it just gets more blatant by the day with the way Harry won't even offer an explanation as to why he will update the site but still not something so basic. Makes it a bit of a laughing-stock actually. In over 10 years of coming here I've never seen him defend it. Maybe I missed it...

Which leads me to: Mori, will the new site have these basic mod-cons? If so, count me in.

Katrina
by half vader
Dec 4th, 2008
08:25:03 PM
I've gotta say the Katrina thing rubs me a little the wrong way, even though I can see the metaphor. Around the same time there were other disasters elsewhere on the planet, with hundreds of times the amount dying. But hey, they weren't in America, so y'know, if hundreds of thousands die in a similar disaster in say, India... whatever. That's "over there". No movies about that stuff. I'm NOT saying Katrina wasn't bloody awful and that every life lost wasn't important. I am saying that it smacks of hubris to self-flagellate by inserting it into movies (and whatever that dodgy cop series was called - you can't tell me that wasn't capitalising on people's death and misfortune) when 99% of Americans don't know and don't care that much worse was happening at the same time. Putting them in movies generates a sort of false history where it seems like these things happened and the others didn't if that makes any sense.

I'm saying that those things are awful no matter WHERE they happen, and your average American Joe being completely unaware that the same and worse is happening elsewhere is a bit galling. Then when Joe watches stuff like this it seems to tell him that it happened in (America's) microcosm. I think it's fair to be at odds about that. Especially when such a specific thing is built into - a fable/allegory. It's not like Greengrass' movie, that's another thing entirely. Surely it would work as well for it to just be the metaphorical storm without actually being specific? I don't see why it needs to be in there as it also implies that it's a moment in international history on the same level as say, WW2. I know the "less people died" thing is a slippery argument that probably should be steered clear of, but hopefully people will get what I'm trying to articulate without a kneejerk flamejob coming back at me. Just for your info, I have American family but don't live there at the moment.

And what WAS that cop show called? I think it got cancelled.

Katrina is irrelevant in the film
by Karl Hungus
Dec 5th, 2008
08:47:57 PM
***SPOILERS*** The most annoying thing about the Katrina segments is how the film's momentum keeps getting derailed by having to go back to the present in order to remind us that yes, we're reading a diary and isn't the life of Benjamin Button so charming and whimsical and dramatic and heartfelt and touching and PUUUUKKKKKKEEEEE!!!!! It's also used as sort of a ticking clock/danger element as if Blanchet and Ormond are going to have to evacuate before they finish reading the diary together. (I wish they HAD been evacuated, and the diary lost in the storm.) There's another overused gag in the film about an old codger getting hit by lightning SE7EN...I mean, *seven* times throughout his life. The old B/W handcranked-looking footage of the strikes is amusing the first couple of times. Tedious to see them all.
