"Gake no ue no Ponyo draws from his relationship with his son, Goro to tell the tale of a five year old boy's friendship with a gold fish who wants to become a human." Honestly, that doesn't sound "magical," that just sounds retarded.

By "most anime", what do you mean? Have you seen Miyazaki's other movies? You might not think that a movie about a pig flying an airplane in Italy would be good, but Porco Rosso was fantastic. Every Miyazaki movie I've seen has been great. Anime isn't really a genre, it's a medium, or a "supergenre".

this cast seems a little star-studded for a movie about a ****ing goldfish princess. Would it be so much to ask for a cast of regular voice actors, with a famous name or two thrown in when needed? Despite this, I will see this film in theaters. It's Miyazaki. I'm psyched to no end.

You wouldn't expect a movie about two little girls who move to the country and interact with a trio of trolls to be a good movie, but's it's a masterpiece. I've learned to trust in Miyazaki no matter how strange the concept. He ALWAYS delivers.

Imported a Japanese copy of this; she's trying to build a complete library of everything Miyazaki's ever done. It's ok, but not great. Kind of like Pixar's "Finding Nemo"... not a bad film by any consideration, just not as great as you hope it to be considering the creator's track record.

And Christian Bale's Howl voice in Howl's Moving Castle is a better Batman voice than the corroded, Clint Eastwood-gargling-with-battery -acid one he came up with for the actual Batman movies. Don't most anime movies just animate the mouths first, and then the voice actors do the performance? Whenever I watch a subtitled anime, the mouth movements don't seem to match the Japanese voices, so dubbing I have no problem with.

I didn' think much of "Princess Mononoke," frankly, I thought it was waaaay too long. Same with "Howl's Moving Castle," which I like much less. I'm not saying there's nothing there, I'm just saying that I don't see what the big deal is. Having said that, "Gake no ue no Ponyo" sounds like shit.

So it's not yet another tale of a girl that has no parents that has to work for a living? GOOD. I was getting mighty tired of that same, worn-out old formula. I thought HOWL was an incoherent mess.
Frankly, Miyazaki himself is starting to grate on me lately. There was an interview recently where he said that all manga and anime besides his suck.
I always thought fellow Ghibli director Takahata was the more talented one.

Don't let the tame plot description fool you - Ponyo boasts some of Miyazaki's most psychedelic moments yet - even before the opening credits. Its definitely not as dark as most of his later films, but no less eye-popping.

Yeah, now I feel a little bad for defending him somewhat on that TB. I perceived him as being bullied, and I hate bullies. But I guess some people earn it....
I remember in High School how everyone in PE class made fun of this fat freshman kid named Donny. So I told them to leave Donny alone. I later found out that it wasn't Donny's weight that was getting him mocked, it was the fact that Donny was a total jerk.
Did they say "Shut the fuck up, Donny!"

I enjoyed both the dubbed and subtitled versions of all Miyazaki works - especially Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I tried watching the remastered Dragon Ball Z episodes, but the Japanese voices were really annoying. In that rare instance, the English version is more preferable.

I know somebody made a fanmade porno of one of Miyazaki movies. Kiki's Delivery Service, I think.
And yes Thrillho77, lots of people told him "Shut the fuck up Donny." They also stole his Gameboy and vandalized his Air Jordans.
They test screened this in Pasadena earlier this week.

Disney has good dubs
by Johnno
Nov 28th, 2008
09:39:40 AM
John Lasseter will make certain. As for Howl's, it wasn't originally being done by Miyazaki, I haerd the original director jumped ship very late in the project and Hayao had to step in and finish it, so it's no wonder it's less than optimal. But everything else is fucking awesome! Nothing can touch Princess Mononoke! Ghibli should make a Shadow of the Colossus movie!
Why not hire professional voice actors?

They cost less to bring on board and give better performances. No matter what Disney will give this movie very little fanfare, so why not focus on quality.

The best Miyazaki dub to come out of this Disney thing was probably Nausicaa, even if some of the lines came out sounding precisely like they did in the old "warriors of the wind" butchered version. What is with the Disney strategy of using famous name voice actors to sell these things? Does anybody really give a shit if Billy Crystal did the voice of a lump of coal in Howl's moving castle? Isn't Robin Williams a huge fan of anime? Why hasn't he been involved in one of these dubs yet?
